Joseph was kind but he definitely cut way more hair than he initially promised. I left his salon with a great look and style but that's only because he flat ironed my hair for me. I was given a v shaped shag and so Joseph decided to create more of a rounded u shaped look and suggested I come in every 2 to 3 months but my hair shrunk up considerably and didn't lay right after I wore it curly these past two weeks. His salon is absolutely lovely and I left him 5 stars on Google (initially) but my goal is long hair and my hair is now extremely short and curling but there's no real style to it. I had to fix the front slightly and my hair just sort of hangs there but without a real shape to it. I changed my review to a four star and this isn't the worst cut I've had but it certainly is in need of another major reshaping down the road. I'm going to just leave it be for six months since I am not using chemicals or coloring my hair. I don't feel good about this cut ...it's super short but no real style. The layers just lay haphazard because he took me from real long in the back to shorter but now there's no "style". I have to be honest here and say I will just keep looking for someone else I can trust. I'm leaving the 4 star on Google because I don't like being mean but this hair cut isn't really sexy now that the length is gone. I kind of wish he had just given me a slight trim and kept the shag but no reason for me to cry over spilt milk because it was my choice to get a haircut this summer. read more

This is an excellent salon - with extremely talented stylists. I had stumbled upon this place by chance when my son was all of the sudden in dire need of a cut. His first cut was excellent, and since then he has returned for his second cut and I had decided to try them out as well. Thrilled with my haircut! First, just so everyone knows what's up here - Zelaz Salon is in the same space where VP Salon used to be. Joseph is now the owner and he brings his adorable little French Bulldog, Coco, to work everyday! I've been getting my color and cuts from Raul for years. But yesterday, I went in for a total transformation. I'm very pleased with the cut and color. It's just what I was looking for. My favorite thing about Raul is that he is so willing to listen to your reservations and requirements while at the same time making you feel secure that he will make you look like your best self. In addition to being skilled in the hair department, everyone can take a lesson from Raul and the whole team in customer service. They offer you coffee, cappuccino even, magazines and if that's not enough for your short attention span, there's constant footage of Italian runway shows or Madonna playing on the flat screen. A Lakeview salon gem! I discovered this place about a year ago, and I haven't gone to any other salon. The staff are so welcoming and warming; I often drop by to chat with them on my way home from work. In terms of scheduling, they are very flexible based on your needs. My stylist, Luda, gives fantastic men's haircuts. She is truly a keeper. The pricing is competitive as well. FIVE STARS. I love this place! I randomly walked in last Sunday after having brunch with a friend and Henriet immediately took me. She and another stylist were the only two there. They were very nice, easy to talk to and knowledgeable. Henriet did an amazing job on the cut which is no small thing given the amount of hair I have! She also did it quickly and professionally. I was on a time constraint and she was very cognizant of making sure she didn't cause me to be late. She even curled my hair at the end (no extra charge) and it looked great. I never like my hair curled but am now repeating what she did every day. Highly recommend! Price wasn't bad either as it was $60 for a cut. I've paid closer to $100 multiple times and had a much less personalized experience. I loved that this salon was right on Broadway and had a nice open space but was quiet. So was referred here by a neighbor who has a really cute hair cut. I came in for a trim and refresh on my layers my goal is to continue to grow my hair out. Well when I left it looked fine bc he curled it when I got home and straightened it out the layers were way to short and not blended. I had to buy a 70$ wig bc it was my bday weekend I had people in town and had plans that night. I wasn't able to call until later bc I had a 3 day offsite training the following week so I didn't call until 12/10 called bc they were closed on sun he said come in I'll fix. I called today like the only way to fix it is to make it a bob like a short one he's basically going back and forth with me about my hair! The layers are to short and my ends don't look clean! He goes I don't even wanna touch your hair I'm like I don't want you to either I'd like my money back he said you don't get anything it's been a week and I don't want to ever touch your hair. WOW! This place is the BOMB!!! My 14 year old now has the coolest hair in chi town! He decided he wanted something "different"....Well, he got it! Joseph, the owner, had already given him the most awesome blue hair-and then he added a purple zig zag- i call it PURPLE HAZE...and he LOVES IT! I have been going to VP salon for years. Recently, the owner sold the salon to one of the stylist, and thus Zelaz was born! First, let me just say that the owner Joseph is an amazing person and the rest of his staff are phenomenal. To have an owner who learned the business, works hard, and then opened his own salon shows a great deal of character. It is refreshing to know that hard work does pay off. The salon atmosphere at Zelaz is welcoming. In my experiences just stopping in to say hi, I see that I am not the only one treated like a regular, everyone is! I am pretty sure I've found the guru of hair. I only went in for a bang trim, but I have never been more impressed with a hair stylist's knowledge (and that's saying a lot, considering I have worked at two "upscale" salons in Lincoln Park. The second I walked in, Raul was able to tell that my hair was naturally coarse and curly (it was blown straight that day), and that I had had it bleached 3 years ago (it's now dyed pitch black) just by looking at my hair damage and regrowth patterns. Because he paid such close attention to my hair texture, he was able to completely transform my bangs. Bangs sound simple enough, but because of the way the previous stylist had cut mine, I appeared to have a thinning/bald spot at the crown of my head. I was actually becoming quite concerned about hair loss over it, but Raul assured me it was just an error on the previous stylist's part about where to "separate my hair." He cut them correctly and remedied the problem in under 5 minutes. What a relief! I will definitely be coming back to him for the rest of my cuts and color. It is EXTREMELY important, especially for curly girls, to have someone who knows how to work with your hair type, and he's the first one I've met in the city to do so. read more

They just changed the name here so they don't have many reviews yet but this place is the best! I am a dude and I used to go to all the cheap chain stores for a haircut but after going to Raul once, I won't be going anywhere else. I am just disappointed I didn't start going earlier. Raul takes his time to get a haircut perfect and I seriously leave feeling so much more confident than when I got there. Never knew a haircut could do that.
