I had an appointment with a stylist named Alexis. He bragged about having "25 years of experience,"…read morebut I just don't understand how anyone with that much experience could do such a shockingly sloppy job. His workflow was complete chaos: he constantly fumbled his tools, frantically tore foils right around my face, got dye all over my skin, and nearly poked me in the eye with the end of his brush. When it came to the cut, I specifically showed him that the shortest pieces around my face should be equal to my chin. He asked me if I liked layers, and I said yes, but I had no idea that to him, "layers" meant randomly chopped, disintegrated hair that is so shocking it's hard to believe. I could have easily survived the hair being cut too short if it actually looked like a proper haircut, but what he did was just appalling. He wasn't even willing to show me the back of my head. When I saw that the back was just chopped into a harsh step without any structure or flow, I completely lost it. I refused to let him touch my hair anymore and asked if someone else could step in to fix it as much as possible, knowing it was almost impossible to salvage at that point. Meanwhile, he was the one acting offended and insulted! Another stylist named Louis actually left his own waiting client just to do damage control. The picture I am attaching is after Louis tried his best to make it look less disastrous. Trust me, it was far, far worse than this before he stepped in. I am so thankful to him and I really wish I had booked with him instead. I did receive a full refund for this disaster, but this salon keeps a walking liability on the floor.

Full Disclosure: I got highlights here on Sunday off of http://www.salonapprentice.com/…read more I don't normally write reviews for places that I used weird discounts for, however this place was so amazing. I was here on a Sunday afternoon. Taylor did my highlights. Raymond was also doing hair at the same time. All of the other clients that came in while I was there were regulars. Raymond and Taylor were both so nice to everyone. I saw 3 finished haircuts from Raymond while my highlights were processing. The 3 difference woman all had very different hair, but they all looked amazing when they were done. Taylor did a really good job with my hair. The highlights are just what I was looking for (very natural. My hair actually looks a lot like my sister's hair now!) I know that I got a discounted service here, but I was blown away by how nice the salon is, how great the staff is, and how loyal the customers are. All of those things indicate a outstanding salon to me! Oh, and they offer you a drink when you come in! I love places that do that!

The pros are that he's a very nice guy, the right amount of talkative and personable, and to some degree he seems to know what he's doing. Regulars filtered in and out of the salon during my two hours there; he is clearly beloved by the people who come to him. I don't know what went wrong with my request. I asked for highlights, but I asked for them not too close to my roots so that I could grow them out cleanly -- sort of like a balayage. I didn't exactly want a balayage, but the general idea that the highlights looked natural without being streaks. When I came home and saw my hair under my own lights and mirror, I cried real life tears. It looks terrible. There is a halo around the top 4 inches of my hair where no highlights exist, about 2 inches of highlights in the middle that go from brassy to blondish, and returns to my natural color on the bottom couple inches. $200 later, and all I got out of it were terrible photos to send my mother and a ruined weekend of figuring out how to fix it before my upcoming event this weekend.

That's when I decided to go to a professional to get it fixed. I called SBJ after viewing their website and looking at their great work in their gallery. Jeffrey was very responsive and I ended up having an appointment with him only a few days later. The location is easily accessible by public transit. The salon is very comfortable. There's comfortable furniture, magazines, and you even get complimentary coffee, tea or Miller Lite if you want. The other stylist, Erin was also friendly and welcoming. Jeffrey is an incredibly competent and talented stylist. He will give you what you WANT instead of the easy thing to do. I told him the color I was going for and he accomplished what was needed to be done to get those results. I have never been more happy with a hair color in my life. I never did much with my hair, and after taking a chance on a "high-end" salon across from Maggie Daley park I decided I would never do highlights or anything other than a cut ever again. The lady didn't use toner on my hair, and it was so brassy. I lost all trust in hairdressers, until I met Jeffrey. I shared the story with him and he was just as horrified as I was. I decided to try balayage again with him, and I'm so glad I did! He has mastered it. He stresses the importance of keeping the hair healthy, getting regular trims and using the correct products. He isn't pushy and definitely won't do anything to your hair that he doesn't think needs to be done. When I pressed for curtain bangs, he was very hesitant, and gave me pieces that framed my face instead (we had agreed to try this) and it was exactly what I wanted. He's someone I would book a flight to see if I leave Chicago, or if he does. He's awesome!
