I had my hand in a cast and couldn't wash my hair. They were very understanding and took great care of me even though I didn't want a cut. Just needed a thorough shampoo and style. My hair is super long and dry, so I only wash it about once a week (or I would look like Hagrid on a bad day) so it worked to get shampoos the entire time my hand was in a cast. read more

Super disappointed in my experience with Mai. She was very nice but she was all over the place with the scissors. She had a client in the chair before me and did not sweep up after him or clean her tools. There was trimmed hair on surfaces. I went in wanting an inch trimmed but she convinced me to do two. She ended up cutting over 4 inches off my hair. I told her I wanted long layers and she was not professionally sectioning off the hair so I'm now afraid to straighten it. Normally I'm a "it's just hair" girl, but I'm getting married in a couple months and now I have to get hair extensions just to get the length back. I don't recommend this salon. read more

Annie was great - she took great care in everything she did, from cutting to washing to final touches - nothing was rushed. It pains me to write this review and it took a while for me to decide to do it. I had been going to Mai for almost 2 years for a cut, color, and highlight. She had been doing a fantastic job and I was very happy, until.......I went in for my touch up and there was another gal in there helping. Mai had this girl foil my hair while she was on the phone outside. The girl admitted she didn't know how to do the foil. Long story short, my hair is a complete disaster. I have been having to wear a hat ever since. Now I have to find someone who can correct the color and from what I gather, it won't be cheap. I'm sorry, Mai, but what happened was unacceptable since I drop $130 in your shop every time I come. I won't be back. Please be mindful of your customers who expect YOU to do their hair, not an inexperienced girl from a barber shop. read more

Mai is the most amazing hair stylist I've ever had. I live in Portland and hold off on getting haircuts until I'm up here visiting just to get a haircut from Mai. She's super friendly, professional, extremely hard working and talented, and gives the BEST head massages...not to mention it's super affordable. I have never been disappointed by a haircut there. I took my 95 year old mother in to Serena's. It's now December, and because of CoVid restrictions at her assisted living, my mother hadn't had a haircut in months. Making the appointment was no problem at all. I'd assumed I'd have to wait at least a week but when I called on a Monday I was scheduled for the same week with several options for day and time. I brought in pictures of what my mother likes her hair to look like, and Mai understood right away. She checked with us both as she cut and styled, and did a beautiful job. The shop is super clean. Although another customer could have been accommodated even with our current restrictions, we were the only customers in at 1:00 on a Thursday. Additionally, Mai wore a mask for the entire time she was working with my mom. I wouldn't hesitate to take her back, and will definitely consider going there myself if my regular stylist ever quits. read more

I've been getting my hair cut at this place for over 10 years and I have always been happy with the result. This shop has always done haircuts and a couple years ago the new owner Mai started also doing women's hair, styling, washing, etc. (they also do children's hair so it's a one stop shop). Not only is Serena a great place to get your hair cut, Mai is a lovely, sincere person. She's one of the hardest working women I've ever met. I had been getting my hair done at Gene Juárez or Habitude for 20 years when my husband found Mai. I was willing to pay more for great services, but grew tired of driving into the city and spending hours at these big salons every four weeks. My husband suggested I go see Mai and she has been a treasure. She does a great job on my husbands hair and trims his beard up so it is always neat and tidy! She does fantastic color for me- i have a lot of gray and she's all over it. Mai is up on all the techniques the big salons use and offers helpful suggestions when I need a change. I have a big job and she is flexible with scheduling, patient when I am rudely running late and welcomes me with a hug when I walk in the door. Ralph and Annie are also a great support to Mai and are always there to lend a hand and a laugh. As for this bizarre statement about worrying about your boyfriend or spouse in there... that sounds like a personal problem and couldn't be further from the truth. It feels a little unbecoming to even respond to it- but I feel so strongly about Mai and her lovely business that we couldn't allow that hurtful and false review to stand un-rebutted. I first visited Mai and her Hair salon about twelve years ago with my then baby in a carrier. She and her staff were so gracious and caring to me and my son. After years of coming only to Mai, we have since moved to Kirkland and of course we still only go to Mai and her team. Ralph is great too! They're amazing and do a great job with my really curly wild Hawaiian Portuguese hair and my families too.
