We found this one and thought..ooh! this looks good! We get there and were told the wait would be about 35 minutes for 2 people. We waited patiently. Bout an hour later, we were finally called. I'm fine with the wait but the estimation of timing was definitely off. Anyway, we sit down and my guy asks the server: how large are the portions here? She replies with Oh, HUGE. With that in mind, we order food. He orders Huevos rancheros. I look at his plate and go..umm... that's 2 eggs, a handful of beans... on top of what looks to be a small mound of marinara sauce? what? I got chicken and waffles. The waffle was very flaky and crispy.. not like something i've had before. Anyway, we eat and are left less than satisfied. Sequoia Diner has always been one of our go-to spots but today we came in for a casual visit only to be WOW'd by the oxtail and grits special. When I tell you I finished my plate in 6 mins flat, I'm tellin no lies! The meat came off the bone - CLEAN! The flavor was top notch with a little bit of heat. Sooooo good! At prime time there's quite a wait and the parking shituation is very competitive on MacArthur. The coffee? So-so. Are you hungry? The kitchen isn't as speedy as it should be, but "have some more coffee..." Been here a few times and this premium-priced trendy breakfast spot serves up great food but is a bit over-hyped. I'd had this bookmarked for a while, but ventured into the Laurel District in East Oakland for the first time this morning. I was surprised to see that none of my trusted East Bay Yelpers had reviewed this place but was excited to give it a whirl We arrived around 8:30 and found the place mostly full, but were able to grab the last available booth with no wait. It has that diner charm, with a long bar counter and several booths along the wall. This isn't the place to bring a large group, but it is perfectly cozy for 2 or 4. There are several adorable waitresses that were super friendly, greeting you on the way in and out, and keeping the coffee coming. I loved the positive vibe. I like that they keep the menu relatively simple, with several classics, and a few twists. No kids menu here, per se, but my boys were happy with their pastries...a pecan roll and the strawberry cream cheese danish. They stood on their own as a small breakfast, but would be equally nice as a shared starter while you wait on the main event. I was thrilled with the mushroom and spinach scramble which, like their other egg dishes, come with some perfectly cooked and seasoned potatoes, some excellent sourdough toast, and a small rocket salad. Seemingly simple, but it leaves you wondering why you can't do 'em that perfect at home. The Highwire brewed coffee wasn't my favorite, but it did the trick and my cup was never empty or cold. All in all, a real winner that will get added to the Sunday rotation! read more

* One waffle and one biscuit and gravy come out to $24.50 bucks. Waffle isn't like your southern diner. Just one thin and crispy but not filling, and that was 12 bucks with strawberry. I don't recommend it! The Biscuit and Pork gravy weren't to my liking. Water down gravy. I'm used to it being a little thick, and instead of pork sausage, they used pork bits. The biscuit was smothered with the gravy but lacked flavor. The biscuit was not flaky, and the dough wasn't cooked. That was about six bucks. I got my bill for those two items with tax, and also a 20 percent automatic tip, and the price and food quality wasn't a match. The service was fast and great. If you're looking for a better dinner, head to park blvd. There is a restaurant at the corner of Glenn field and park blvd. Exact pricing, but the food portion and quality make it worth it. It's one of the only places in Oakland that have mastered biscuit and Gravy, and the portions are more significant, and the taste is phenomenally yummy!! read more

We waited a looong time after for our two mains which were carefully ordered, mine a la carte, my friend's with toast rather than biscuit. The main orders not only arrived after a long wait but were wrong and mine was cold to the touch. It also took a special flag to a person to get our requested cream for chilling coffee. The orders were corrected in time but at no point were we offered any recompense. The bill includes a mandatory 20% tip. Friends have suggested that we go with them for brunch because of the great review they recently read on Next Door. When we arrived there were many young people standing in front waiting for a table. Yes it was Saturday at 10:00 a.m. so of course it would be busy. We were told that would be 30 to 40 minutes so we decided to wait. We did get our table at exactly 40 minutes and as soon as we sat we were served water and delicious coffee. We ordered our food when we received the coffee and it took exactly 1 hour for it to be brought to the table. Our Brunch took over two and a half hours which I don't find acceptable in any diner. If a restaurant is unable to serve food in a reasonable time they should either decrease the tables or increase the kitchen staff. I decided to order a grilled cheese sandwich and was underwhelmed with the sandwich. The bread was grilled perfectly but the cheeses were lacking in flavor. One of my friends ordered a hash dish with a poached egg on top. The egg was hard in other words it was sort of like hard boiled egg. But he said the hash was delicious. My friend o​rdered an omelette which he said was good. The only ou​tanding food we ate were the scones which were one of the best I've ever eaten. I will personally never go to this restaurant again but if you happen to be there make sure you get the coffee and delicious scone. Oh yah. The wait staff were very friendly. read more

Long story short, went to Sequoia Diner about a week ago with a friend. We and I waited over an **hour and a half** for our food and ended up leaving without eating at all. They do a vaccine check and folks were wearing masks. The food here is good, the servers are lovely, but I don't think its worth going in until they sort out their kitchen and take-out situation. My friend and I came in, on a weekday and were seated right away, the restaurant wasn't packed when we came in. After about 30 minutes of waiting the server came back and said the kitchen was very busy with orders and take-out orders, we were happy to wait. The people who sat just before us also ask about their food and are given the same answer--that the kitchen is busy with in-house and online/take-out orders. The restaurant wasn't packed, there were empty tables, people were paying and leaving so I don't know how they were inundated with in-house orders, my guess is they were dealing with a lot of online/take-out orders. More time passes, other people who sat before and after us keep asking about their food. At this point at least an hour has passed and the people who sat no more than 10 minutes before us, have been given their food, eaten and are now paying their bill. We've had nothing but water. We ask the server again, she checks in with the kitchen and then comes back to tell us it will be at least another 15 minutes for our food (and that was only if she asked them to rush the order), meaning after waiting for an hour and a half they hadn't even *started* to prepare our food. I've been to Sequoia when they've been absolutely slammed and never waited more than 20 or so minutes for my food. The food here is good, but it was beyond disappointing to take the time and effort to come in, and essentially waste 90 minutes without getting so much as a biscuit. I understand restaurants need to do what they can and don't begrudge them for having to take online/take-out orders. But if you are going to have people in your restaurant it would be nice to actually bring them food, or at least not have people wait hours inside your restaurant for no reason. The only way to get food seems to do an online/take-out order, so I wouldn't plan to dine-in here anytime soon. read more

Decided to have my last breakfast before my move away from the area and realized it's overdue for review. So quaint and charming with the feels of a b&b and delicious food to boot. Those eggs are always cooked perfectly to my liking and they're pasture raised yumminess. Oh and those biscuits....ugh, so damn good. It's a popular spot and gets busy on the weekends without a doubt. My fave time to come is weekdays late morning/early afternoon where they're still a little busy but I get seated quickly. I had breakfast at the Sequoia Diner on Saturday morning at 8:00 am. Sometimes when you arrive at the opening time a restaurant isn't quite ready for business. This is not the case at Sequoia Diner. My sister brought us here and recommended that it really provided a diner feel. From the moment we stepped in, the place was bustling and the waiter who took our name down was very hospitable. There was a bit of a wait, so we got coffee across the street. We noticed when we returned they seated us quickly and they did offer coffee to those guests waiting for a table (always a nice touch!) Our friend was hoping their country breakfast which had biscuits and gravy collard greens and potatoes. You had the the option to add their fried chicken. She was excited to learn that their gravy had meat mixed into it. I had their mushroom, swiss, and spinach scramble and added chorizo which was a great recommendation! It was not too spicy and gave the scramble some flavor. I really enjoyed their hash home style potatoes. It was a mix of full potatoes and hash browns and they were perfectly crispy. My husband had ordered their hot chocolate topped with homemade whip, which is always better than the stuff in the can. I could tell they use quality ingredients. We were a group of four coming for breakfast on a Saturday at 10.30am. It was busy and we put us on the list. We went to a coffee place across the street and waited for about half an hour. We got a booth and everyone was super friendly. Overall the atmosphere is very warm and welcoming, I loved it. We ordered food and we had to wait for a while (if you are in a rush, don't come here). But when the food arrived, I was impressed how fresh and well seasoned everything tasted. The toast was fantastic (it comes with a lot if butter, I ordered it without) and the jam was equally good. Too bad this place is kind of far for me, otherwise I would definitely go back next week. Why not five stars? This is strictly a rating on the service. They don't take call in orders because they only have one register. Here's an idea get a second register. Smh. When I initially called in they told me the online ordering wasn't working. So you have to come into the restaurant to place your to go order. Which would be fine if it were 1985. When you get to the restaurant the ordering was totally unorganized. Was told to try and order online at the restaurant but the online system wasn't working as previously stated but they wanted me to make sure. Told me it was a 30 min wait just to place an order. Not get food but just to place an order. The staff were so busy but they had time to go outside and socialize with their friends. It's basic breakfast. I was a little skeptical at first it was a small menu and the plates seemed simple, but when it got tot the table I immediately understood why. Everything is made in-house and they focus on the quality of the plates. Awesome! Ordered the hash and the country plate. For meat eaters, probably would recommend with the porkchop with it as I heard the couple next to us say how good it was.
