I've adored Sephora for years. I do wish they would build a free standing store in place of the one here inside the JC Penney store. It's a very small area and not always a pleasure to walk through the store to get here. I was here last week and the two ladies working here were more than helpful. I found my perfect shade and dabbled with the lipsticks and eyeshadow palette. Free Samples always. It's great to be able to get a sample or 2 or 3 of perfume, foundation, lipsticks and more so you check out the product and only come back to buy want you want. Worst Sephora experience I've had. I shop very frequently at several sephora stores throughout the Scottsdale/Tempe area but I have never experienced such rude, inattentive staff. I had to approach the staff several times to ask questions since they did not approach me once. The store was completely empty and I was the only other shopper there. After walking around for about 5 minutes looking at possibly other foundations I could try instead of my usual I decided to just stick to my usual, but couldn't find my shade in the Makeup Forever HD Foundation. I went up to the two women at the counter and they looked as if they were bothered that I was interrupting their conversation. She told me that they were probably out, and I asked her to please check since I know they sometimes have additional product in their bottom drawers. Only then did she check to make sure. I then decided since they didn't have what I needed in stock, I should try 2 brands that I've heard were pretty good and similar to my usual foundation so the trip wasn't a waste. The two women still behind the counter having their conversation would just look over and continue talking as I was at the make-up station trying out the brands and matching them to my skin on my own. When I finally decided on two similar shades for each brand, I went up and kindly asked for a sample of each. They literally asked if I could go and bring it to them for the samples. Seriously?? Are they that lazy that they can't go assist me? At any other store, the Sephora employee would have gladly went over to help and maybe even given me some sort of advice or opinion. Not to mention, she rudely tells me I am only allowed 3 samples. I've never heard that in my life at a Sephora store. Especially considering it was only 4 total (2 similar shades for each of the 2 brands). Really disappointing, and I hope the Sephora management at this location does something to ensure their employees are able to uphold the standard of excellence that Sephora usually provides. read more

My mother and I have been coming to this location for years. Cynthia was usually who helped us out, but she is no longer at this location. I went in the other day, not having been here in a long time. A wonderful girl (I believe her name was Amy) helped me out and saved me from buying the wrong shade of foundation! I have been to the normal stores of Sephora and the ones inside JCPenny. This one is inside JCPenny. I have experienced this same treatment at every Sephora in JCPenny that I have been to. Upon taking one step into the Sephora area, I am asked if I need any help. I say "No just looking" and I look. About 3 minutes later the same lady asked me if I was doing okay after staring at me for the past 3 mins. I said "I'm fine." I continue to look around and again after about 3 minutes I am asked again after being stared at again. I then say after feeling forced to ask a question, "Well I don't remember what color I am". She says "Oh do you have a beauty insider card?" "Yes" and then she says she is able to check my past purchases. We figure out my color on the computer and then I walk back over to the section. She comes about a minute later and asked me if I found it okay. I say yes. and then she says "Is that going to be all today?" I feel like i was being forced to finish shopping so I said "uhh well I guess so" and go to the register. I left feeling irritated and felt as if the employees were thinking I was going to steal. With their persistent nagging and eyes burning holes in every direction I went, it made for a horrible shopping experience. I am super allergic to many products so I have to check ingredients and take my time looking at things to see if I want to risk spending my money on products that I could possibly be allergic to. Not last Sunday but the one before I went into the Sephora for an herbivore product and walked out with the power couple from Sunday Riley. Eve is the one who helped me & if i could give her 10 stars I would! She was so amazing! I would go back just for her, she was super knowledgeable about the products. Funny how my 8$ makeup remover gave me points but my clarisonic points were completely left out! It's very rare that I walk into a place and feel disregarded because of my looks or the way I am dressed however, this last Sunday in Sephora made it perfectly clear that is why I failed to get help. My husband & I ran out to do an errand and I was in leggings, a sweatshirt, and had no makeup on, which I was perfectly comfortable. I decided to stop into Sephora to get more eyeliner & was completely ignored. There were 4 sales associates working (which I don't know why they need that many associates for a Sephora inside JC Penney but I digress...) who were so busy socializing with one another that they couldn't be bothered. Unless of course someone who was dressed for club and looked like they used every product in the store came in. That happened 3 times... 3 times other customers walked into this tiny Sephora & were greeted & offered assistance, two of which was while I was standing there trying to get someone's attention. All of these ladies were dressed up with their makeup flawless. I even walked up to the associates at different points and was ignored. Not only did this happen to me, I watched it happen to a middle aged women who clearly needed assistance because she couldn't find what she wanted. I believe she walked out because no one could bother to help her either. Finally I had to interrupt. And when I did receive help, the woman (who continued to call me babe, wtf is that?!) didn't have much desire to assist. I told her what I wanted & she offered me a product that was the exact opposite & said "you can look through those colors" when I told her I wasn't interested she offered a product but then followed up with "but we don't carry that" to which I replied "how about a product you actually carry since I'm here to make a purchase." At last she showed me the Sephora brand eye liner, and made a comment about how low the price was... I'm not entirely sure what she was insinuating but I can extrapolate a few ideas based on how I was treated & her lack of enthusiasm to help me find something. Which by the way, I was originally there to buy Smashbox, not exactly your Wet n Wild priced product. Unfortunately I hadn't realized Sephora was so close to me. I had been going to another shop, (I won't name names) which was HORRIBLE!!! Finally, I visited Spehora and was so happy that I did. They not only had what I wanted, they had more. I'm from KC and frequented the Sephora there. Of course I loved it there too. i had also had points built up that I hadn't realized. When I was checking out today, I was able to get not only my free b'day gift, but was able to redeem points and receive another fantastic gift. The staff was/is amazingly helpful, no pushy sales people, just helpful. The variety of products is not a disappointment, although I wish that this particular Sephora was a larger store. I wish it was on it's own and not inside Penney's. I'm glad I now am able to go to a location that's close to home. I love this place and highly recommend shopping there. read more

I went into Sephora to buy some eyeshadow primer but when I saw Cynthia's eye makeup (which was the very definition of perfection), I was like; "Hold the phones!".... She sat me down and did me up so well that my anti-make-up friend wanted hers done too. I live nowhere near this Sephora location but I will gladly make the trek for the quality of service this location provides. I finally made it to Sephora a month after receiving a gift card for my birthday. It wasn't very busy when I went which was nice. I was immediately greeted by Andrea who helped me find my make/up forever shade, and recommended nars eyeliner & blush (pricey but the product is excellent). I also tried the Anastasia brow pomade which they were out of completely(!) but she took my number to call me when it comes in. Sephora has a pretty open return policy which is nice if the $36 foundation doesn't work out for you. Overall very great experience, but the size is smaller so the selection is limited. I had very good customer service here from Bianca. She was awesome, friendly, helpful, etc. I came in on Valentine's Day looking for some gifts like I'm sure alot of guys were. Lost a but at first with what was what but Bianca was gracious enough to help me get the right gifts. Sephora is my absolute favorite store! Today I went in to get a sample of the new Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation to try out because I have sensitive skin and didn't want to waste purchasing it if it wouldn't work for me. So I ask the lady working if I can have one for the two shades I picked out and literally waited 30 minutes! I had to get in the line and remind her for the fourth time of what I wanted and when I did had major attitude! The worst sephora ever. I see that I'm not alone in receiving horrendous "customer service" from this location. I walked into the Sephora and there was one person working and one customer. The Sephora employee (Amanda, if I remember correctly) did not find it necessary to even acknowledge my existence with a "i'll be right with you" or "just a moment" nope not a word. She completely ignored me while she attended to the other customer and added in a bunch of small talk while I waited. After the customer left she STILL did not say a word to me. I approached her and asked her for some make up suggestions. She mentioned a few lip glosses and then decided that it was important to tell me that I have "blotchy skin" and that it was "discolored" thanks.....and funny enough I've only ever received compliments on my skin. Even though she was rude I asked her for an eye liner suggestion and she proceeded to actually say that she "was the only person working so couldn't show me more" this was after her "helping" me for TWO minutes and after I waited for over TEN. I told her to go ahead and help the other customer. Since it was evident that she for whatever reason, did not want to help me. I grabbed a few items and wanted to pay and gave her my beauty insider information but she "couldn't find" it. I said that was interesting because I have NEVER had that issue before. Then she tried to tell me that my e-mail was imputed wrong. I asked her how I received every single e-mail from sephora then, also every single receipt? She doubled down on her lie of the wrongly entered information (the girl at the chandler store which I went to after this told me that my e-mail had to be right if I got all the other e-mails and had no previous issues). I told her to just forget the transaction after she continued to talk down to me. I said it was clear she did not want to help me since I waited over 10 minutes and then she couldn't be bothered to help me after that anyway. She said "i'm the only one working" yea clearly! That's why I patiently waited for you to finish yapping with the previous customer. And that sounds like a scheduling issue which should not be taken out on the customer. Furthermore just because you are the only one working doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to help several customers at the same exact time. I used to work retail, it's just not that hard. She said "i'm sorry you FEEL that way", aka the perfect way to invalidate another persons concerns. I'm sorry you feel that way is bs, and is not "i'm sorry". She tried to deny that she provided horrible service and I told her to roll the security tapes. I said it's a store with cameras so roll the tape and let's see how long after I enter the store before you even acknowledge my existence...I'll wait. Not a word. The sales person clearly judged me off of how I look. I'm an attorney, but it doesn't take an attorney to see the holes in her "i'm the only one working" argument. This happened around 6:45pm on Tuesday Sept. 26th. She said that her name was Amanda, if I remember correctly. This is not the first time I've been in this store and been completely ignored. I drove to the sephora in the Chandler mall for actual customer service. Sephora needs to do something about this location. It makes you not want to shop at Sephora and I've been vib rouge as long as it's existed. I have never had a negative experience shopping at this location. Most recently on the tail end of a bad visit at Ulta down the street, I came in to pick up a new pallet and my customer birthday bonus. The lady who greeted me, remembered me from my last visit, asked how I have been doing, and assisted me promptly. She helped me pick the perfect eyeshadow palette, and made me a sample of perfume I am interested in. Truly the level of service I receive there is unmatched but any other store I go to. I had the worst retail experience that I can recall. I was "reprimanded" for walking away from an associate after she told me they didn't have any of the product I was asking about. Her passive aggressive attitude was enough to almost bring me to tears. If I hadn't had a gift card, I wouldn't have purchased the single item I did. I went shopping with my mother at this location & it was beyond terrible I have zero desire to go back. We normally shop at the Scottsdale location, now I remember why. The customer service we awful. By awful I mean nonexistent. She had questions about Kat Von D & other long wear lipsticks. Not only was the store almost completely out of product! No one cared. The employees lack of interest of assisting customers really left a bad taste in my mouth. This was about 2 weeks ago. However, I can't let it go. Word of mouth can be bad for business. I'm not the type of person to post reviews, but this store is so horrendous that I had to share my experience for the sake of others. I bought the "Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask" by First Aid Beauty there. The safety seal was on and everything but when I got home to use it the tube BREAKS and inside is the mask very hard and in pieces. Obviously this item has been on the shelf FOR A VERY LONG TIME. This is nothing against this brand, it has always worked well for me. But this store carries very very old and probably dated face care products. Not only that, but the staff member present was not even closely as nice and professional as the ones in the Chandler Mall that I have always gone to. She raised her eyebrows at me when she saw how many points I have received with my Beauty Insider card and raised her eyebrow again when I didn't want to spend my gift points. She was nice enough but she didn't make me feel welcomed and she made me feel ashamed that I had so many points and spent so much money, in fact. Okay, first of all this was hands down the worst experience of my entire life shopping at a Sephora. And let's establish the fact that I usually spend insane amounts of money constantly at Sephora, I am a highly valued customer and I'm ALWAYS treated as such. Until TODAY I go into this location and was completely discriminated against and I've NEVER been more appalled in my entire life. My friend and I spent our time looking at several things in the store when we were approached at least 7 different times by the same employee asking us if we were "okay" after the third time of telling her no thanks we are FINE we started to come to the conclusion that something wasn't right. But, I kept on shopping. Then when we actually had questions for her she responded with such a NASTY attitude I didn't know how to react. I couldn't figure out why she would be so rude to us. So, As I'm checking out my friend was looking at the last minute Mini items by the check out stand when she's notices the girl I think her name was Judi (the one being a total snob) walking over to a guy in a cardinals jersey and after she spoke to him he remained in the store and looked directly at my friend, so our conclusion was that they were thinking we were shoplifting!!! I have no idea why but a THEIF is the last thing I am, I truly feel like it was because I am black I was automatically targeted. So I mentioned this to them to only receive excuses (after I had just spend over 200 dollars) and they treated us even worse! Speaking with the manger tomorrow!
