I love to sample perfumes and this Sephora has one of the largest walls of fragrance with scents that I want to sample. I'll happily spend 15-20 minutes spraying fragrances on those little white paper strips, my wrists, and sniffing away. Then I can't remember which is which and I'll start the process all over again. I'll always walk away with one or two new fragrances. A coworker told me that he could smell my perfume as soon as he walked in the room (that's not a good thing, is it?) but he doesn't know that I had just sprayed some. read more

This was my go to place! Used to shop here all the time. On Saturday I came in to get some hair products and a Dyson tool (they did not have). I looked at some products by the cash register. I was the only person in line. Two cashiers were available. I approached the one nearer to where the line begins. She did not greet me, so naturally I asked if she was able to help me. She just stared back at me without saying anything and started ringing my items. The rest of the check out went exactly the same. It was awkward, silent. I paid and left. There was no thank you, no have a nice day. Just awkward silence. Wow. Yes I left speechless. It is seldom that I post, but this experience was so weird I will not return to this location. I have found that this location is back to my standards with helpfulness and customer service. Sometimes, when I enter/shop, I am greeted right away, sometimes I'm not. I'm not generally a person who needs an excessive amount of attention when I shop, especially since 99% of the time I've shopped on Sephora's website and I'm either purchasing the items directly in store, or I'm looking for a specific color and I'm in-store to select between 2 - 3 matches that looked close online. I've always found that when I needed help finding something specific, I was able to find an associate who was more than willing to assist me. Also, sometimes I should listen to them instead of the online reviews, haha. I needed a new mascara, and got minis in the two different Benefit styles that came with a silicone wand I wanted to try. I sampled each in store (with the regular spoolie) and couldn't decide. While checking out, the salesperson told me to just forget A and go with B (A has an Allure beauty award) because in her opinion, A isn't bad, but it's just 'ok.' I felt a little salty that I was being talked out of spending money, I knew I wanted both! I came home, and was able to compare A and B using their included brushes. She was right, A is eh. B is the Bomb. I could return A, but since it's not bad I'm going to use it for traveling or the gym or something. read more

Kohls SEPHORA GIFT CARD policy warning- I received a Sephora gift card and used it at Kohls on my first visit. I returned the item with receipt. I was told I could NOT get my refund as my original payment (a Sephora gift card). I could only get a Kohls merchandise credit. Sephora (free standing and online) sells the item I now want to purchase. Kohls Sephora does not and I can't purchase the item I had hoped to. The gift cards look identical and thought were interchangeable between kohls Sephora and "Sephora". I am extremely unhappy with this Kohls/Sephora policy, enough to not go back. I have a $75 kohls store credit I likely won't use. However, this is also on me. It states the merch credit on the original receipt, and I didn't read it carefully. So I'm paying it forward with an FYI. I gave a second star because the Sephora employees were professional, helpful and extremely apologetic - apparently there are other negative issues people have been unhappy about. read more

I purchased Alterna smoothing anti frizz dry oil mist online. At most I used 2-3 times however it was a big struggle to get the pump to work. The pump became impossible to spray, so I took back to the store to get a replacement or for someone to fix the defective pump. The manager was focused that it was outside of their return policy and could care less that you are not able to use the product. Therefore, she was not able to take back. I truly cannot handle going to this store with my set list of items and then get hounded 15 times in 10 minutes. As soon as you walk in the door you have to run into every employee in there asking you what you need before you can get to anything. It's an issue every time and I have heard the same from friends and family. If I need help, I promise I will ask. I'm not stealing - watch if you'd like but leave shoppers alone. We are old enough to ask for help. Quit ruining makeup shopping experiences, they don't that at Ulta. The ladies that work here are usually more than helpful. They'll help you try new stuff, and give recommendations. You can even get samples to take home and try before you buy. Depending on the girl - some of them are totally chintzy with the stuff (like it's theirs they have to part with), while others totally fill up the sample box (we LOVE these girls). It's a FABULOUS location - in Deer Park mall. It's a nice bright, large store. They've got the perfume wall that I'm constantly perusing - trying to find my next scent. The store is packed with HIGH QUALITY, famous brands. This is all the stuff you'd find at Macy's makeup counters - but more!! And since these ladies get to work with it all, instead of just one brand - they can honestly tell you what they think is the best! Well first of all, this is my first time going in and this was just a in and out thing but no I walk in there I didn't get greeted.. that was fun and plus while I was walking around no one didn't bother to help me with anything, all they did was talk to each other and don't get me started while I was hearing they would greet other people and help them out and not me. All they did was just look at me and didn't say anything to me, like if I didn't belong there at all. When I walk out all I heard was one person say goodbye. I was at this Sephora location for the first time ever. The girls there are very helpful and attentive but not too pushy which I enjoy. I like taking my time looking at make up and hair stuff! It is a clean store. I noticed some of the employees helping younger girls (maybe middle school aged) teaching them about how to do their make (not doing it too big or over doing it) -it was nice to see. To not hear you have to a full on face everyday at school is something every girl should hear! Pro tip: always ask for samples when checking out and if you aren't sure about certain colors of foundation, bb cream, or other products ask if they can give you a sample as well. I love Sephora. Just made VIB status (which basically means I spend entirely too much there) which is dangerously exciting. So many things. First off, they have everything a girl could want (keeping it clean here): Make up, skin care, nails, fragrance, tools, and who knows what else. There are testers for EVERYTHING! What is not to like about that?!? And even better you can ask to have someone help you out, they will put it on you, match foundation perfectly to your skin, and you will walk out feeling beautiful and spoiled. Everything I've ever wanted has been in stock, everything is perfectly clean and displayed beautifully. Everyone who has ever helped me has been so pleasant and helpful, always guiding in the right direction. You can tell the team is well trained and knows good customer service which I appreciate a lot. And it's not Ulta for these reasons: there is help, you can ask questions, they will take care of you. And the selection of products is decidedly higher end than Ulta as well. Which does come at a price. But if I'm going to spend money I prefer good service and good quality. I do prefer this location rather than the Vernon Hills location (which is closer to me), I find the service is much better. I'll be back! read more

I came here looking for an item went to the shelf and item was displayed but I couldn't find the stock so I decided to ask one of the staff for help and this is how it goes... Lady 1- I said- hello ma'am can you please help me find an item? I see it on display but I don't see the stock on the shelf maybe you can help me, she replies... Oh ok hold on ill take you to this girl here because I'm about to go on break" "I'm thinking wtf" ok. Lady 2- hi there how can I help you ?" I told her the same thing. I had so much fun today! My cousin signed us up for a make up class we learned to do a daytime and nighttime smokey eye. Being a MAC girl i wasnt really excited about going to sephora, but i really did enjoy it. I learned new techniques and tried different products all while hanging out with my cousin. Why not say we are incompetent and cant deliver on time and you wont get your order as you expect it. I love this location! Even though the one inside Woodfield Mall is much closer to me, I'd rather make the trip here and avoid the crowds. I had a very pleasant experience here two weeks ago (not sure why I took so long to write about it). I came in looking for a new "perfect" foundation. I was approached and asked whether I need help almost immediately when I walked in. I appreciated that effort since I definitely needed help. The girl (sadly I don't have her name) applied the foundation that I read reviews about and it turned out to be horrible on my skin so she recommended another one. She found my shade and even gave me a sample to take home and see how I like it. What more can you ask for? I was very happy! Here comes my favorite part .... I asked for her name so she could get commission from my purchase if I do decide to buy the foundation but she said they don't get commission! I'm confused as to how some of these sales/makeup staff are trained. I have had makeovers done by different staff... male and female... and EVERY TIME, they never blend foundation properly. They slap it on and leave brush strokes on the face. They aren't gentle in application... and quite honestly, they don't do a good job. I think it's important to have trained people applying makeup because when applied well, it makes the customer want to buy the product. I have never bought a product that was applied to me in store because it seemed "bad"... then when sampling the product myself, I realized it wasn't the product, it was the way it was poorly applied by the "professionals". I love Sephora, but I'm going to avoid the staff applying anything on me. I've given them multiple "chances" and tried out different artists but unfortunately they're all the same quality of training. The best bet is to ask for a sample and try it out yourself in the comfort of your own home. Or if you have a friend who knows about makeup, take them with you for reassurance. Because they know and care about you and will treat your face like their own. So in conclusion, 5 stars to the actual store and the products they carry, but 1 star to the untrained makeup staff... hence 3 stars for my review. read more

Walked around store until I found a sales person. Asked if they sold a particular brand. Salesperson answered "Oh no, that's sold at drug stores, not here!" Like it was a horrible thing! I replied I never saw it at a drug store. About 1 minute later another sales person found me in the store with her computer to show me that the brand was sold at Target (never thought Target was a drug store) not in a helpful manner, but an "we're right and you are wrong" attitude . Sent my husband to get me Christmas present and they sent him home with nothing telling him the product was discontinued even though it was there the whole time. Need to get your makeup done? Go find Carolyn! I typically hate getting my makeup done. I'm a bare minimum kind of girl and most makeup artists struggle with "natural". Carolyn nailed it. My makeup was flawless. She 100% respected that I'm very loyal to certain products but also made great recommendations for new things to try. She was super friendly and even entertained my boyfriend (who is terrified of Sephora) while she was doing my makeup. Awful. I asked for help with eyeshadow for an important event. I typically just wear a wash over my lid but needed help with crease technique. I didn't need a full face makeover just a little help with eyes. I came right in the am when I knew it wouldn't be busy and I think there was one other customer in the store at the time. The MA was acting put out and just wanted me to buy a brown mini palette...didn't consider my skin tone just talked about hers which is much darker than min. Didn't consider my eye color either. When I asked if she could show me how to apply it and that I'm a VIB so I have a card for a free makeover she first said "you would just do it how you said, make a crease slightly above your crease". It's not that easy, I just wanted her to show me because I was nervous about the event the next day and had no clue what I was doing. It was obvious she just did not want to do my makeup for some reason. When I asked again she said I had to make an apt and that all she could do is one eye. She just seemed so put out. I left, feeling like crap but I have limited time today and now have to drive to another sephora. I spend so much money at Sephora I shouldn't have to beg for help with an eyeshadow look.
