Even though this place is vegan, the petting zoo had a very nice touch. Also when I walked in there, there was one particular woman, she kept looking at me in a very sexual way, and five minutes or so later, she came up to me and asked,"Hey baby, can I suck your carrot?" SO I assumed that she was vegan but I told her no. This place is very bad, I would never go here, their lemonade is pretty good though. But other things, I had found a testicle in my coffee the first time I went, so that was pretty disappointing. Nice soy latte, yummy baked goods but wow those vegan breakfast tacos tasted like nothing. No spices, no salt, no nothing! And covered in an absolute forest of spinach? Disappointing since I had heard some great things. My boyfriend eats vegan with me all the time and took a bite and agreed "this is why people think vegan food tastes bad, it's like cardboard." Very convenient location, very friendly staff. However, I will not be returning until the coconut rooibos tea comes back to replace that horrid cinnamon rooibos (seriously just smell it and you'll know that stuff is bad and a horrid idea). I am by no means saying not to go here. The sentient bean truly is a great place and has a wonderful ambiance and staff but I can't help but be disappointed that my ritual is no more. Love the earthy raw vibe at Sentient Bean. Feels more deconstructed and authentic than the more hipster pretentious scene at Espresso or Foxy. Great coffee and usually good customer service, that can be a mixed bag but some surly staff is a given @ an indie vegan coffeehouse. read more

I guess it's a nice place, the food and coffee are good but the management is not concerned one iota what your experience might be once you are served.... Once again, it is a pretty good idea, so now let's turn it over to unsupervised teenagers and let them make the decisions on how customers are treated and served. There is, for instance, no concern that a customer at 7:15 a.m. may not want listen to an hour of death metal music at volume as they begin to greet the day. Try Gallery Espresso. Came here a few times during our trip to Savannah. We had hot and iced coffee a few times, but didn't try the espresso or food. The coffee was good, nice seating, good hipster vibe. Got a pretty tasty cookie bar. One day while a bunch of college kids were there working, some of them started freaking out and pointing at something on the floor. It was a pretty big cockroach but a kind soul directed the buggy beast out the front door, and other than the screams of a few, crisis was averted. Nice and quiet with great coffee and food. Right across from Forsyth Park so you can take a nice stroll to get there. Visit here on and off because some experience have been less pleasant than others. Baristas in the past have been unfriendly and pretentious, but this morning's experience was wonderful! The ice coffee is cold-brew (amazing) and the sandwiches are amazing and made fresh at order. The chocolate chip oatmeal cookie is the best I think I've ever had. All under $10 for a solid breakfast on the way to work and lunchtime cookie snack. I'm glad they've changed some employees out for ones with better attitudes and smiles! read more

I recently visited my old college roommate in Savannah who took me to Sentient Bean for breakfast one morning and it was so delicious I insisted we go every morning during my trip. This place is charming, cozy and inviting. I even got to meet the owner who was delightfully friendly! I had the most delicious vegan breakfast burrito which was obviously made with fresh natural ingredients. The egg and cheese on a bagel was also perfectly prepared. You know it's good when you're still thinking about what you ate for breakfast when dinnertime rolls around, which I was, every day. The drip coffee smelled particularly aromatic and the selection of teas was unique which I appreciated. I wish there was a perfect little place like this to sit, relax, enjoy a drink, a delicious food, and just be where I live. Sentient Bean, if you ever want to expand, I'm sure we could find a spot for you in Chicago. read more

Where is that Southern hospitality?? Not here, that's for sure! Came here based on other reviews, and was totally let down. The woman who took our order was so rude, and unfriendly. I asked what kind of quiche they had, she looked so annoyed that I asked, and told me "it's on the board"....Sorry, I could not see it, it was written in really light chalk, and I'm half blind. Strike one. When asked what size coffee, I said "medium", when she handed me the empty cups (it's self serve), I noticed they were rather small, so I asked for a larger cup. She rolled her eyes, as if this were a problem to hand me empty cups. Strike 2! While at the coffee station making our coffee, the half and half carafe was empty. I asked if she could get some more, and again she was annoyed, and made some snarky comment about me putting the empty carafe back on the counter. Strike 3!! It's not like the store was extremely busy, and it wasn't our fault the coffee station wasn't properly stocked. We will be here all week, but we won't return to this place. Big disappoinment, and the coffee wasn't all that great. The quiche was really good, which is why they got 2 stars. read more

I've been frequenting the Bean for about six years now-- I live on Gaston, and it's a necessity stop when shopping at Brighter Day, or crossing the border between the Historic and Victorian districts. The food is usually pretty delicious (in particular, the Hearts of Gold salad is fantastic-- with more artichoke hearts, walnuts and high-quality feta than is be justifiable for a really low price. The dips and bread/biscuits are always excellent, though soups are always tasteless...) But the coffee-- oh, the coffee. I can't get behind it. It uniformly tastes like diner nothingness; the cappuccinos are 80% airy foam. The smoothies are also pretty lackluster-- I mean, there's excellent organic produce next door at Brighter Day, but the Bean's smoothies almost never taste fruity! And are always thin/icey (hint--use xanthan gum! the secret to a thick and awesome smoothie). The peanut butter one is good, though, because it's peanut butter. Lately I find myself going out of my way to the Foxy Loxy, where the coffee and vibe is far superior. read more
