I used to live in the East Coast for a little bit over 3 years, across the street was this Puerto Rican restaurant called 'Ramirez'. I loved to go there to get me some authentic PR food. One evening we heard sirenes and the whole neighbourhood was covered in smoke; 'Ramirez' burned down, it was no more. In the East Coast not really a big of a deal, there you have PR food all over the place. After the move to Sunny California, it amazed me that there was no PR food available, the closest was Cuban. With Senor Big Ed I finally I found a spot that has PR food. I wish the portions were bigger, much bigger, cause I was almost putting my utensils in the other peoples plates after my plate was empty and licked clean. We ordered 2 #5's one with tostones and one with maduros, both with the arroz guidado con gandules. Our kids got the #5's from the kidmenu; Chuleta de Puerco a la Partilla con arroz blanco. As appetizers we had the Pastelillos de Carne & de Queso, I used to eat back east the Pastelillos de Carne y Queso a lot, would be good to put on the menu at SBE too. To bad they were out of Yuca al Mojo, maybe next time. Besides Puerto Rican menu they also have a Mexican Menu, "Mira Papi I'll see you next time okay? This is a place I will surely visit again when I am in town. Why can't they just have a PR restaurant in LA, is it to much to ask for in a multicultural city? So if any Boriqua is reading this review, please start a PR restaurant in LA; on Pico Ave. or Downtown, it won't matter I'll be your first costumer. read more

My boyfriend and I have mixed feelings about this place. We came here about 4 times already. 1st time wasn't such a great experience customer service wise, 2nd time it was a bit better. My boyfriend is from PR and was starting to like this place but this last time the food didn't taste all that great. I've been coming here for about 5 years and being a Puerto Rican myself this place is legit!!! I love coming here my dad loves coming here. The food here is amazingly delicious. I love the arroz con gandules it has so much flavor and tastes just like how my grandma made it. You have to try the bistec empanezado it is sooo good. And do not get me started on the habichuelas you need to try that to. The workers here are so nice and respectful and I have to compliment the cooks to! The first time I visited, I tried the mofongo and this is definitely an item you need to order, especially if you like beef. I also ordered the yellow plantains and these are simply delicious. On my second visit, I ordered a bean and cheese burrito with green sauce. Simple but very tasty! The waitress also gave us chips and salsa to hold us over until the food came out. Worst Mexican food ever! Salad was a small amount of lettuce with an eighth of a tomato and terrible ranch dressing. Taquito beef was chewy with lots of gristle and jarred avocado stuff. I grew up eating Puertorican Cuchifrito and Dominican food in New York. Those restaurants are a dime a dozen all throughout the city. Many of my best friends growing up were Puerto Rican or Dominican and I would always be over their house eating their family's cooking, so I am pretty particular to good Puerto Rican food. For Los Angeles -- this place is the best you will probably find -- but in terms of Puerto Rican food I have had throughout my life this place doesn't quite meet up to the level of really good Puerto Rican food. That being SAID....I would still eat here because it's literally the only option to get close to that style of cooking unless you want to go to a Peruvian, Cuban, or other Latin style restaurant. But if you are really craving Puerto Rican food - I wouldn't say you would be disappointed here, it will still hit the spot for LA standards :) read more

As a puertorican, i say this food is authentic and taste just like the food my grandmother used to make for me. It's a bit pricey but it's a lot of food as well on a plate. The food and the service was great. I went with the breaded steak and it was a a delicious and big portion.

I bought the pernil w tostones, pollo fricase with maduros, and the sampler for the hubbys Fathers Day dinner and it was a hit! He's not sure which is his favorite the chicken plate or pernil lol he ate the pernil and our daughter had the chicken. The portions were great too - he had pernil left over for lunch tomorrow we will definitely be back to try other Puertorican dishes. read more

My wife surprised me with a visit to this amazing hidden gem in Cypress today! Awesome menu, all the traditional Puerto Rican dishes, appetizers and sides you would expect to find at a true, authentic Puerto Rican restaurant. Family owned and everything was absolutely on point and simply put, deliciousness! Service was awesome and even got to meet the great cook, who my server introduced as her mom! No wonder everything was soooooooo good! They also serve Mexican food. So if you're ever in that area, and enjoy authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, head to Senor Ed's in Cypress! Puerto Rican rice: fried mixed rice with beans or pea and shredded meat. Kinda of dry, hard to eat with a fork (they don't provide a spoon... why?) Pretty good PR food! I just recently visited the island and was having some cravings for some authentic Rican flavor. I live in Irvine and it's really hard to find a good spot. This place satisfied my cravings and wasn't too bad of a drive out. The beef pastelitos were fire and so was the arroz con gandules, pork, tostones and Maduros. The female cashier was so friendly and helpful. I grew up in FL and have tons of PR friends who make real PR food, so I KNOW what it's supposed to taste like and this met my expectations. The food was delicious!!! We ate 4 alcapurrias, mofongo filled with chicken, cheese empanadas plate, carne guisada plate and pollo guisado plate. All plates were delicious, served with tostones and rice and beans or arroz con gandules. Also, we ate the bacalaitos. Although we thought they were pricey for the size, the flavor made up for it.
