Food was okay, went with some friends and they didn't like the food at all. I don't think I will be returning.

I used to live in the East Coast for a little bit over 3 years, across the street was this Puerto Rican restaurant called 'Ramirez'. I loved to go there to get me some authentic PR food. One evening we heard sirenes and the whole neighbourhood was covered in smoke; 'Ramirez' burned down, it was no more. In the East Coast not really a big of a deal, there you have PR food all over the place. After the move to Sunny California, it amazed me that there was no PR food available, the closest was Cuban. With Senor Big Ed I finally I found a spot that has PR food. I wish the portions were bigger, much bigger, cause I was almost putting my utensils in the other peoples plates after my plate was empty and licked clean. We ordered 2 #5's one with tostones and one with maduros, both with the arroz guidado con gandules. Our kids got the #5's from the kidmenu; Chuleta de Puerco a la Partilla con arroz blanco. As appetizers we had the Pastelillos de Carne & de Queso, I used to eat back east the Pastelillos de Carne y Queso a lot, would be good to put on the menu at SBE too. To bad they were out of Yuca al Mojo, maybe next time. Besides Puerto Rican menu they also have a Mexican Menu, "Mira Papi I'll see you next time okay? This is a place I will surely visit again when I am in town. Why can't they just have a PR restaurant in LA, is it to much to ask for in a multicultural city? So if any Boriqua is reading this review, please start a PR restaurant in LA; on Pico Ave. or Downtown, it won't matter I'll be your first costumer. read more

The food was so good it reminded me of being at my grandmothers the best Puerto Rican food .If you want Puerto Rican cuisine the Senior Big Ed's is the place , the service was very good and friendly. The service sucks. I waited around for about 15 minutes and even though there was staff around, no one acknowledged me. I guess business must be great for Senor Big Ed if they can afford to,ignore PAYING customers. I'm sad to say my experience here was not satisfying. The food lacked in flavor, presentation and taste. The black beans were straight out of a can with no Puerto Rican seasoning. As you know the beans are a staple of Puerto Rico. It was offensive to serve beans in that fashion. The Maduros were frozen and the empanadas (beef) did not taste good with no seasoning . Even the waiter stated that people question where the potato and olives were in the empandas. The so called Pernel was nothing but sliced pork loin when I was assured it was a pork shoulder. The mofongo was not even crispy but soggy and mushy with no chicharron. There are a few items that were good...the tostones and....the tostones...well the tostones. The star of the show was our waiter/cashier/busboy/host, he was very kind and patient. And the one doing everything. read more

Friendly service. Puerto Rican food. Plantains. Enough said. I have been here twice and really enjoyed it. The first time I visited, I tried the mofongo and this is definitely an item you need to order, especially if you like beef. I also ordered the yellow plantains and these are simply delicious. On my second visit, I ordered a bean and cheese burrito with green sauce. Simple but very tasty! The waitress also gave us chips and salsa to hold us over until the food came out. Best most authentic Puerto Rican food. My husband's family is from Puerto Rico and this is their place of choice.

I am going to be the most honest, but the food here was not good at all. I've tried puerto rican food in Miami and this food tasted recalentado. The tostones did not have one but of salt. The meet felt old couldn't even have one of what I ordered. For the pastelitos I was expecting some other kind of cheese and cheese was literally shredded cheese tasted more like just a bunch of cheese with just oil fried. Alcapurria, was fried to the max i had one piece did not finish it. Food was not what I was expecting and for the price I would expect better food. I know it depends on who's cooking it and so I understand things like this happened, but I hope they take this into recommendatio because the food is expensive and for the taste it just didn't take like anything . read more

I love trying local favorites and Senor Big Ed was definitely on the list as its right down the street. Its really easy to miss because its on the corner of a street in a small strip mall that has a mattress store next to it. I ended up getting the lunch special big Ed burrito, which was like $7 or $8! It was huge! Like i couldnt finish it in one sitting! So in terms of size its a great value. It was definitely on the saltier side and and to be honest my stomach was not feeling great after I ate it. I could blame bad digestion, but every time i ate it, i felt a little worse....i'm going to hope it wasnt because of the burrito. The next time I went, i tried the pastel de masa and pastel de yuca. They were both very unique as one was more of a plantain wrapped tamale with chicken and the other one was more of a traditional corn tamale with pork. They were both really tasty, but the plantain one was over heated and lot of it was melted. It also tasted a bit sour, which i noticed it had been sitting out so im not sure if it was fresh. Overall ive had 2 average experiences here, but the staff is always very friendly, so i hope this place continues to stay in business! read more

My boyfriend and I have mixed feelings about this place. We came here about 4 times already. 1st time wasn't such a great experience customer service wise, 2nd time it was a bit better. My boyfriend is from PR and was starting to like this place but this last time the food didn't taste all that great. A lot of inconsistencies and not sure what is up with the people that work there everytime we try to strike up a friendly conversation they just don't want to engage. I've been coming here for about 5 years and being a Puerto Rican myself this place is legit!!! I love coming here my dad loves coming here. The food here is amazingly delicious. I love the arroz con gandules it has so much flavor and tastes just like how my grandma made it. You have to try the bistec empanezado it is sooo good. I grew up eating Puertorican Cuchifrito and Dominican food in New York. Those restaurants are a dime a dozen all throughout the city. Many of my best friends growing up were Puerto Rican or Dominican and I would always be over their house eating their family's cooking, so I am pretty particular to good Puerto Rican food. For Los Angeles -- this place is the best you will probably find -- but in terms of Puerto Rican food I have had throughout my life this place doesn't quite meet up to the level of really good Puerto Rican food. That being SAID....I would still eat here because it's literally the only option to get close to that style of cooking unless you want to go to a Peruvian, Cuban, or other Latin style restaurant. But if you are really craving Puerto Rican food - I wouldn't say you would be disappointed here, it will still hit the spot for LA standards :) read more

As a puertorican, i say this food is authentic and taste just like the food my grandmother used to make for me. It's a bit pricey but it's a lot of food as well on a plate. I bought the pernil w tostones, pollo fricase with maduros, and the sampler for the hubbys Fathers Day dinner and it was a hit! He's not sure which is his favorite the chicken plate or pernil lol he ate the pernil and our daughter had the chicken. Free soda on check-in: I got the INCA golden kola. The soda was OK, pretty normal tasting, didn't feel any different BUT what bothered me was how FILTY the top was. I had to thoroughly clean off the top bc it was CAKED with dirt. Thank goodness i was basically trained to always do that. (See pictures) We ordered 3 dishes. *Beef stew with Puerto Rican rice and half-and-half plantains *Chicken stew with Puerto Rican rice and half-and-half plantains *Pork mofongo with Puerto Rican rice and half-and-half plantains I liked how they had a side of plantains with the dish. *Half sweet and half fried plantains* Sweet: really yummy, almost dessert-like Fried: no taste, just texture. Puerto Rican rice: fried mixed rice with beans or pea and shredded meat. Kinda of dry, hard to eat with a fork (they don't provide a spoon... why?) All of the meats were pretty tender and had a unique flavor. Definitely cooked for a long time... Overall, it was a OK place. Pretty good PR food! I just recently visited the island and was having some cravings for some authentic Rican flavor. I live in Irvine and it's really hard to find a good spot. This place satisfied my cravings and wasn't too bad of a drive out. The beef pastelitos were fire and so was the arroz con gandules, pork, tostones and Maduros. The female cashier was so friendly and helpful. I grew up in FL and have tons of PR friends who make real PR food, so I KNOW what it's supposed to taste like and this met my expectations. Very reasonably priced and I would say this is the Best PR food in LA/OC I've tried so far! read more

Worst Mexican food ever! Salad was a small amount of lettuce with an eighth of a tomato and terrible ranch dressing. Taquito beef was chewy with lots of gristle and jarred avocado stuff. My wife surprised me with a visit to this amazing hidden gem in Cypress today! Awesome menu, all the traditional Puerto Rican dishes, appetizers and sides you would expect to find at a true, authentic Puerto Rican restaurant. Family owned and everything was absolutely on point and simply put, deliciousness! Service was awesome and even got to meet the great cook, who my server introduced as her mom!
