The original Senor Big Ed was a small stand in Hawaiian Gardens , and my family used to have their food frequently decades ago. I wanted to try this space for the Puerto Rican cuisine mixed with Mexican. Food here still comes from the small kitchen. Friendly service. The yucca tamal had a very distinctive texture and taste, more sweet than I expected. The rice, plantain and beef combo was also good, meat tender and in a savory sauce. Placed a DoorDash order for the carne guisada, chips, and guacamole. The prices are reasonable, and the portions are generous. I wasn't a fan of the guacamole as it was really watered down and it was more of a salsa texture. The carne guisada was ok, the rice and plantains were my favorite poster of the dish. This review is only for the 5 taco lunch special to go. I didn't order anything off the the Puerto Rico menu. Maybe next time. I was going to order the Big Ed burrito , but I was told no cheese. " What ! No cheese ! I was told that their cheese distributor didn't show up. Ugh I would send someone out to get some cheese ! Oh well. The service was friendly. This Puerto Rican spot has my heart. Loving food of my culture is so hard to find in Socal. Walking in feels like you're in Puerto Rico with the vibrant colors and the murals on the walls. Families having a good time at their tables enjoying the music and the food is so much fun. The service was very good. We felt welcomed and the staff were very friendly. This will make anyone's day. With that being said the food here is so good. My husband had the Carne Guisada with arroz con Gandules and Plato's Maduro. The flavor was there plus the meat was so tender it melted on his mouth. I had the Mofongo carne Gusida with Arroz con Gandules and tostones. I have to admit the mixing was so good not hard and crunchy. We both shared the Yuca con mojo and loved it too. Updating my review because it's been ages. We have continued to return to señor big Ed's because their Puerto Rican food is absolutely delicious. The pork jibarito sandwich is my go to. The pork is well seasoned, and incredible. We have yet to sit down and eat here, it's always been to go, but the service has always been great when ordering whether over the phone or in person. First time having Puerto Rican food from a restaurant. Had mofungo. I liked it. And the sampler plate. All was good. I always rate my food on there being a memorable food there. I really didn't have one. But still decent. Only negative was the staff asked me and my dinner friend if we needed anything else about every 3 minutes which felt like 50 times in an hour. We felt a bit rushed as if they wanted us to eat and hurry and leave to allow more patrons but that made no sense since there were plenty of tables available. Recommendation, ease up. I saw this place across the street while I was on the way home from running errands. I bought steak and cheese + chicken pastellitos and they were AMAZING!!!! Crunchy and delicious. Pernil or roasted pork leg was tasty but had some chewy dry pieces. The maduros balance sweetness with the black beans and rice fixings Entrees were served with Maduros, tostones, rice and black beans or pink beans, or Spanish rice with pigeon peas The canoa de platano Maduro was very hearty and unexpected combination of flavors! Definitely a top favorites of the evening. Think of the plantano like a hot dog bun filled with ground beef topped with cheese. Pretty good tacos and tostadas. They are quick with making your order so you don't need to worry about waiting too long if you drop in and place an order. They don't have the special unique meats and are pretty much limited to steak, pork, and chicken. The tacos are pretty solid and come with everything you want. They have a large, REALLY nice seating area that you would probably have a great time hanging out in. I ordered for take out but the seating made me want to stay, haha. The food here is fantastic and there is so much variety in the types of dishes you can order and try out. They have everything from sweet to savory items and I get the feeling that they are all so good! I ordered the #9 which is a fried plaintain filled with ground beef and topped with cheese, and it comes with a side of rice and the option of plaintain or tostones (or you can do half and half). I was extremely satisfied with my meal and I felt like the price was more than reasonable for what you are getting, right down to the portion. It was perfect! Would definitely try it again but I really want to come back and try some of the other items on the menu. The waitress was super helpful and attentive, as she even gave us some pointers on what is popular, her personal favorites and what is recommended to try for the first time. Been passing this establishment for a few. I decided to stop in. It took me a few as I was observing the menu. A little history is one of the owners used to be involved with the Original Green Burrito establishment. I had decided on the Mexican part of the menu. I ordered 2 Carne Asada Burritos and 2 Carnitas burritos. Also, the Big Ed wet burrito with green salsa. The young lady, which I apologize I forgot her name.. she was great customer service being patient with me as I observed both menus. Always a smile truly attentive, so nice to have. Nice establishment very clean nice dining area. And just looking at the kitchen, I see how this is a family mom and pop establishment. This was to go, got home and gave everyone there food. Carne Asada Burritos were very good from what my son and son in law referenced the Carnitas burritos my wife said it was good and my daughter said it was the bomb. I had the big ed.... damn it was a good size wet Burrito it was great with both meat options. Very filling, truly filling. They have regular customers I met a African American doctor who had been coming there for many years. It was so great to hear. My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for almost 20 years, for all of our special events, birthdays, graduations, etc. This family owned business is always so welcoming and the food is always on point. I love that they play music and that they also sell Puerto Rican items. They offer Puerto Rican and Mexican food and their prices are very reasonable. This place is highly recommend it. We don't have many Puerto Rican restaurants in Cali but This place is a gem! Close to Knott's Berry Farm. Service was great . The woman helping us was so friendly and sweet. We had : carne guisada, mondongo with pork, pernil, bistec empanizado and carne asada fríes. All of the PR food was delicious. We didn't really like the fries.
