Extremely disappointing and unprofessional experience. I booked an appointment for a haircut and eyebrow service. The eyebrow service was performed by an employee who was clearly not properly trained or qualified. The process took an unusually long time, and when I finally saw the result, my eyebrows were severely uneven and visibly damaged. It immediately affected my appearance and confidence. At the shop, staff acknowledged that a serious mistake had been made and apologized. Later, the owner personally called me, admitted that the issue was caused by his employee, and said he wanted to discuss how to resolve the situation. Unfortunately, instead of taking responsibility, the owner later completely changed his attitude. He accused me of trying to take advantage of the business, claimed I had visited before, and spoke to me in a disrespectful and intimidating manner. He even mentioned calling the police. I have messages and photos that document everything. Not charging me does not undo the damage or the stress caused. This was an expensive service that was handled carelessly and without professionalism. Based on my experience, I strongly do not recommend this place--especially for eyebrow services. I held off on writing this review because there were viable excuses. After four visits, I'm done giving them excuses. Every time we were there, we had to wait AT LEAST 30 MINUTES AFTER OUR APPOINTMENT TIME. I feel like Seinfeld here. They take my appointment, 9am. But we didn't actually get his haircut until 9:39am. 3 people came in after us and sat right down to get their hair cut. I get a couple minutes here and there. I get it happening once or twice, but EVERY TIME now. I'm done. Okay, now that I ranted for 30 minutes about having to wait OVER 30 minutes for an appointment, let's talk about service and haircuts. I don't doubt there are people here that can do a good men's cut or kids cut, but it is not worth the $30 for a kids cut or $40 for adult cut. My son's cut took 7 minutes (so why couldn't they squeeze us in?!) and no one actually knows how to do a decent fade for me. Just go to a cheap, generic place. You'll get the same service, the same expertise, and probably the same level of care. If it sounds like I'm sour, it's because I am. I don't take 1 star ratings lightly. It's not fun for me to complain and rant. But I do it so that hopefully someone else out there can avoid the pain that I've gone through. read more

I don't often write reviews or comment on businesses, but today's difficult experience stayed with me, compelling me to want to express my disappointment and sadness with my hair stylist, Espy, at the Semion Barbershop at Stanley Market. A bit of context helps. I am a first-time dad to a newborn baby boy. I haven't had a haircut since before he was born, and sleepless nights have put my brain in a constant state of stress and alertness mixed in with a bit of daydreaming. That last part could be the sleep deprivation. But essentially, I've been a bit overwhelmed and stressed lately. My wife even got me this pocketbook called How to Relax by Thich Nhat Hanh to ease my nerves. And it has. Today I felt compelled to visit Semion. I had been going to this place for three years and have generally been satisfied. I'm not always thrilled to go get my hair cut because I get a little anxiety about what looks good and how to style my hair. In fact, what helps is a conversation with the hair stylist to sort of get a sense of their artistry and interest and seeing if it can connect with my feelings on the matter. To be fair, it was a very busy day at this place and there were walk-ins and many who scheduled appointments. My own appointment was running 20 minutes late but that was the least of the issues. The point is it was a stressful environment and I sympathize with the hair stylists. But this circumstance felt off. When I sat down Espy proceeded to call me friend which was nice and then asked what I wanted. I wanted a trim and basically cleaning up the mess atop my head. She expressed confusion and wanted to know what number on the razor I wanted. I admit I was used to using only scissors in the past but it seemed like she was more comfortable with a razor so I said some numbers and she chose one. The second that was decided, she was on the move. Clearly she was in a hurry and turned on her autopilot. My normal discomfort with getting a haircut increased. She sort of pushed me around to get me to sit straight and honestly I felt like I couldn't trust the chair I was sitting in. It felt far from relaxation and maybe it's not supposed to be. But part of what I enjoy about this process is to experience and share in someone's artistry--specifically a hair stylist's--and wanting them to succeed so I may feel that success. But instead she turned cold, saw that I was concerned and said nothing. I made a comment that my hair was a bit shorter than I anticipated and she said that I was wrong and that she only cut a little bit. Be that as it may, my trust in her went from 100 to zero. Ironically right before I sat at her station I finished a page in Hanh's book, "Now is a very good time to relax." Boy was he incorrect at this moment. Here's the thing, the haircut wasn't bad it just wasn't what I wanted and I'm usually fine with that and that's the gamble I must make with a different stylist each time at Semion. But when I got up to the cash register, she proceeded to say these words to me, "You should bring a picture of yourself next time. I can't read your mind. I know you had a bad experience. I knew the second you sat down you didn't like me." I didn't respond. I asked for change and then asked for smaller bills which she grumbled at. Even though I had a bad experience I tipped her a little but not what I normally tip. And that made me sad. I enjoy the tipping part, the chance for me to say thank you beyond the words. The part that disappoints me is the advertisement for each hair stylist and for Espy she notes "I bring peace of mind, comfort, and security to those around me. In a position of trust, there is no better feeling than to not only change how my clients look, but how they feel as well." It was probably an off day. It was stressful for everyone there today. And I'm sure Espy normally creates peace of mind and trust. But I won't be going back to Semion because Espy exacerbated an already anxious environment and the experience left me without faith and trust in Semion's company and culture. read more

I discovered Semion in 2017 and was lucky to find the eponymous owner, who cut my hair at the Lincoln location for years until he cut back his hours and scheduling became too hard. He'd been the best barber I've used. Period. Fast forward to now. The Stanlely location is a few minutes closer, and I went through a couple stylists before hitting the jackpot with Amy B. I'm as happy with how I look as I was at Lincoln. That's huge. Plus, like Semion, she's easy to talk with and remembers things about me that have come up in conversation. I can't rate them on a haircut, because I never received one. Their organization, or actually lack of any organization, is what made me get up and leave. First time trying them out. Went online and selected an appointment time, selected "any" stylist since I had never been there before, and their system booked my time slot with a stylist. I arrived about 10 minutes before my appointment time and it was not really clear as to what I should do or who to check in with. Someone finally asked if they could help me and it just so happened to be the stylist I was scheduled with. She told me however it was still going to be up to 45 minutes if I wanted to keep the appointment with her, or I could put my name on the board for the next available. I put my name down with my appointment time and sat down to wait. While waiting others came in and put their names down with appointment times the same as mine. I waited about 25 minutes. This review is for Christy specifically -in the past I've had appointments with Amber and I'd give her 5 stars Back to my experience today. I came in as a walk in at 10:30 with two other walkins in front of me. While the two walkins before me were getting cut, all the 11am appointments came in and started getting their hair cut (understandable). It gets to 11:15 and Christy takes an 11:30 appointment instead of taking me. Another barber took an 11:30 appointment at 11:20, so I mentioned that people with later appointments were getting taken before me to a barber that was setting up. She said she'd mention it to everyone, and I was taken by Christy at 11:40 (after more than an hour of waiting) Christy asked me how I wanted my haircut and I said half as short on the top and much shorter on the sides but not showing skin. She took a ten minute phone call while I was in the middle of my cut. She cut my hair about a quarter of the original length and made the front look stupid via her shaping. She did not offer any discounts for taking someone before me who's appointment wasn't until later, or for taking 10 minutes on the phone during, or for what was a pretty obvious bad haircut which was not what I asked for. I asked for a veteran discount which I'd gotten in the past, she said we don't do that here. So thanks for a bad experience all around Christy! I do not usually leave reviews but I had an exceptionally bad experience at this salon. I am from out of town and googled "best barbershops around me". This place was at the top of the list so I walked in without an appointment. One female stylist said that she could give me a haircut right away. During the haircut, she was careless with the trimmer and it hit my ear. It hurt and started gushing blood. Furthermore, while we were chatting, she asked if I am married. I said I am engaged and she asked if "he" (referencing my fiancé) lives with me. I do NOT have anything against same sex couples whatsoever, but I am offended that she ASSUMED, when in fact, I'm heterosexual. I felt extremely uncomfortable during the haircut and did not receive any sort of discount for the cut to my ear. I am 100% genuine and honest about my review so it won't bother me if my name is publicly disclosed. Solid experience. Easy to schedule appointment, friendly front desk staff, and a solid haircut

I've been a fan of Semion @ Stanley until recently. I was 7 minutes late for an appointment on a Friday afternoon, with barely anybody waiting, and the stylist told me that I was over the 5-minute grace period, so would have to re-book or come after 7pm. I told her that with other obligations, sometimes my time can slip, but I also understood her point of view. I just went back home and re-booked an appointment for the next day with ANY stylist. I arrived there on time at 11.01am, expecting to be called on immediately. No stylist took up my listing on their marker board. Not surprisingly, the stylist who had an issue with my late arrival the day before, got a walk-in on her chair rather than me. I don't have stylist preferences for the simple reason that I'm about efficiency and professionalism. I finally got called on at 11.27am for a 11am appointment, with a few walk-ins going ahead of me! What gives Semion? Either have a rule, communicate it clearly, and then follow it for both customers with appointments and stylists, or don't have the rule for late show ups. We all slip up on time, so I'm able to extend that courtesy to your staff by sitting around twiddling my thumbs for 26 minutes, but I do expect the same in return. Talk to your stylist and teach them how to interact with customers. Enough with the tone and curtness to your customers. We are all busy, we get it. read more

I've frequented this establishment a handful of times over the years and have always had a good experience. I don't ask for much when it comes to haircuts and it takes less than 10 minutes to get me in and out of the chair. Because of this, I've always been charged $15-$20 by staff but yesterday I was charged $41. I know prices have increased but to be charged twice the amount I'm used to was quite a shock. The person who cut my hair did a great job and was really nice but it wasn't worth the price to me. Booking online was so easy and helpful. The place is welcoming. The people are welcoming and lively. I requested the full service women's layered cut and got Brittney T. She was warm and welcoming however I had to ask to blend my face framing layers because she initially cut them blunt. My bangs were trimmed but left longer than we spoke about. I sat for an hour and 15 so I didn't feel likely asking for her to also redo my bangs after asking to redo my face frame.
