I am so disappointed at the way they handled their appointments. I had booked an appointment to their showroom on Monday at 11AM. This meant that my husband and I take off from work to do so and go into the city on a 1 hr train ride. I arrived with a min to spare. When I peered into their office there was no one in there and I gave them about 5 mins before I called the number in the email confirmation. When I was finally patch through it was already 11:20AM and the rep was unable to figure out where this person who was supposed to meet us was. Jeff (person we were supposed to meet) was being called by her and when he didnt respond she called the manager. In one way or another, finds out that Jeff had an emergency. And they tried to get someone else to meet us (supposedly) Janet. It turns out she also had an emergency and no one bothered to notify us BEFORE we arrived for our appointment in their offices and we were standing outside of their offices like idiots. Remember that we had to take off work and travel an hour to get there so we're pretty pissed. We get that people have emergencies and that is really ok, what is NOT ok is they failed to inform us completely. Rep on the phone apologized and said that theres no one to meet us so would we like to reschedule another appointment? No, we would not this is not acceptable or professional in any way especially since their business revolves around these appointments. My time is as valuable if not more valuable, so this is such a terrible experience with them. Needless to say they have lost our business!! read more

Biggest rip-off in the biz. There are several places that you can get Ikea fronts now: please go to any one of them EXCEPT Semihandmade! Unfortunately when I bought my cabinet doors from them they were pretty much the only game in town. Cheap material, didn't look anything like the sample they sent (and when I complained after the shipment arrived, they said "Sorry -- the sample is just a ballpark color"!!) Their customer service is even worse than their product, if that's possible. BE FOREWARNED!! read more

With the impacts of Covid on industries everywhere, I think it's important for everyone to extend a little extra grace these days. Mistakes happen, and I'm thankful they have delivered great customer service in correcting the mistake. In contrast, I've been dealing with a horrible appliance company lately (delivered a damaged item and 3 months later they're still giving us the run-around... so stressful!) and so I *really* appreciate that Daniel P. has been so great with prompt updates and corrective actions to rectify the situation. This is our second IKEA kitchen renovation and first with Semihandmade doors and trim. The only advantage I see over a standard IKEA install is the ability to have custom sized panels and trim created. The quality seems to be similar to IKEA fronts but with added cost and effort because of the lead time and delivery requirements. As others have pointed out, they look good from afar but on closer inspection the quality is not that great. A lot of our corners have small areas where the finish has come away. Similarly they seem to damage quite easily. On top of this we had some panels sent that were damaged prior to packaging. We were able to work around the last one but given there was no damage to the packaging, they must have been packed this way. None of the above are major issues but with it happening for multiple cabinet doors and occurring so recently after install (or before install) it is frustrating. They do offer replacement options but the 4 week turnaround for problems makes it difficult when you are juggling contractors. When you use IKEA's door options you can obtain a replacement on the same day. read more

Not great quality. No returns. After seeing tons of rave reviews on design blogs, I ordered a godmorgon front for my bathroom vanity. It arrived very well packaged, but with a dent in one front side and chipping off veneer in one corner. The veneer looks very thin and like it won't last long at all, especially in a heavily used bathroom cabinet. The gloss white Ikea front it came with looks much more durable. Unfortunately they don't accept returns so we're stuck with cheap poor quality fronts we don't want to use in our bathroom. They offered to replace the damaged fronts, but it's clear this is not a durable high quality product, so we don't even want a replacement. Tons of back and forth with customer service asking for many photos just to even get a replacement. This company is a pain! read more

We have used Semihandmade on a kitchen, bath and mudroom remodel and were very pleased with how easy it was to install with Ikea base cabinets and their planning tool. We ordered a Supermatte White kitchen. We worked with Jonathan who was easy to communicate with and helped us order exactly what we needed. Actually a bit later on in the project we needed some custom panels made (we REALLY hacked our IKEA kitchen to death!) which Jonathan understood and made happen. These new panels perfectly matched the initial batch. We really were pleased with this. What we really want to address is how well Semihandmade dealt with issues. It was actually a few months after delivery when we finally removed the plastic covers from the panels and noticed a few imperfections. Frankly spoken, this had me nervous, thinking; would the company stand behind their product? Indeed they did! We called Jonathan and he in turn connected us with customer service who were very understanding and then swiftly resolved the issues by expediting new pieces to us and followed up to be sure we were pleased. I ordered DIY Shaker doors and drawer fronts to replace Ikea Akurum drawer fronts and doors. I got them and realized that the inner panels are just plain mdf, not veneer panels like Ikea produces. This was my mistake because I didn't order a sample. But the mdf looks decidedly cheap. If these are supposed to be an approximation of an Ikea product, their work would be SO MUCH improved with the inclusion of wood veneer, so that staining would be an option. I hope they consider this for future products. So disappointed in myself, because there is a no return policy. Will have to paint them, which is the only option. Just wanted folks to realize that these don't actually look like the Ikea shaker design. The person in chat is looking into allowing me to exchange, which I appreciate--but I will be paying a lot more money for the price difference. I can't say enough about how positive my experience has been with Semihandmade. They were recommended to me by my designer so I didn't know anything about the company. In addition to making a great product, I found them to be responsive, helpful, and friendly and to truly care about my project and happiness as a customer. They went above and beyond in coming up with a solution to a color issue I had when a color I planned to use was discontinued. Semihandmade looked like an easy, straightforward way to upgrade our Ikea kitchen. I had been looking at custom builds, and at first glance this seemed much more affordable. The process with Semihandmade ended up being the worst part of our renovation. Before the order was placed they replied to everything within minutes, but once we were a customer, support moved much slower and figuring out exactly what measurements we needed it turned into a real headache. Once the products arrived, there were a few pieces that weren't the correct measurements and we're now trying to figure this out with their slow customer support. Ultimately, the process with Semihandmade has cost me just as much as the original quote for a fully custom build, but has taken 3x longer and will probably not end up looking as good. My recommendation is to work with a single partner that is responsible for all the steps in the process from start to finish. read more

I had an Ikea kitchen and it was great but the cabinets yellowed so they replaced them. They yellowed again so Ikea paid for Semihandmade to make all new kitchen fronts and I had them installed. They look nice but the drawers next to the oven/stove have melted. I was told that my oven was too hot. I had old cabinets before the Ikea ones and the Ikea ones and they didn't melt but these did and they are saying it's my fault. They want to charge me over $300.00 to replace the damaged ones that I had no fault in. They have a product that is defected and they need to fix it. I am going to file a lawsuit against them to get my money back that was paid so I can have someone make Kitchen cabinets and drawers that don't melt when the oven is on. Funny thing I only cook in my over 4 to 5 times a year. Most times I'm cooking outside. Very poor product and very disappointed. read more

This is an awesome company. Not only is it a brilliant idea to make custom fronts to Ikea cabinet boxes but everyone at the company is sweet as can be. I did a lot of research on different kinds of cabinet materials and hardware. For us, the Ikea box x Semihandmade door combo was the best of both worlds (both worlds being high design and low cost) The door fronts are gorgeous and super durable - I got the pre-painted shaker door with black iron hardware also from SHM. I worked with Jacky for the most part and totally loved her. She was responsive, worked with me through a problem I was having with Ikea and called to make sure everything was received in good order. The product was exactly as advertised and much better than the standard Ikea stuff. I'm sure they do great work if anyone answered their phone or returned calls. I played phone tag for 2 weeks with someone named Anna and thought we had settled on a time to come by (they're appointment only). I showed up at a doorman building in Pasadena and gave them a ring from the lobby. No one answered. I left several messages including one 2hrs before my appointment to remind them I was coming. No one showed and I couldn't even get to their front door to try and flag someone down. I left after waiting 15 minutes. The worst part was that Anna did call me back 30 minutes later and didn't even know she missed our appointment. She said she saw that she missed my call, which is strange that she didn't listen to all of my messages. Normally I'd just let this go and skip the Yelp review but I'm so annoyed about how much of my time they wasted. read more

Received my order of 4 DIY shaker style doors today. Disappointed to find the "solid maple" rails to be made of a soft maple. Two doors have damage so I will be contacting customer support tomorrow to see how they want to proceed. Packaging was stellar so the damage obviously done prior to packing for shipment. My contractor spent more than 8 days attempting to get a detailed quote for doors before placing an order. The first rough quote was for $3500-$3900. The final quote when we finally got it many days later was $4700. The product is not that much nicer quality than ikea doors so we decided to delay our kitchen renovation and go with a different cabinet and door maker that uses painted wood. Even with the semihandmade 20% off sale it is coming out at a similar price for a much nicer kitchen. Their bad customer service and misleading pricing is resulting in at least a 2-3 week delay on construction and I would not recommend dealing with this company. read more

I ordered the cabinets in December; it's August. After six months of living with mixed cabinets and no draw pulls I'm at wits end. I never thought it would drag on this far. Just received part of our order 2 weeks behind schedule. Took off the protective film on the white shaker fronts and the thermafoil has ripples across 5 cabinets. Called customer service and the response was a sorry and we will send it to our post sales team. The next day we started on our mud room which we used light grey fronts. Upon starting this project discovered that we have 2 different color greys. Called customer service and was told we are sorry we will pass it along to our post sales team. So here we are. 2 weeks behind schedule. Door fronts that are defective and others that are the wrong color. Part of the shipment delayed until next week (not sure whose fault this is) and a lack of any follow up from semihandmade. Mistakes happen I understand that but this seems to be a complete lack of quality control on multiple fronts. On top of it, a lack of urgency or ownership from semihandmade. We are now out hundreds of dollars from our contractor who we had to pay to be at our house to install and now have to try to reschedule as he starts his next project. The attention to detail and the quality of work delivered fronts where the matching of the grain was incredible! SH was wonderful to work with, very accessible, truly interested in our design, and was committed to ensuring that the completed project was exactly as we envisioned. In addition, they worked with us to managed to our timetable and were flexible when our schedule slipped; they accommodated a short delay so our cabinet fronts arrived when we needed and were able to acclimate to our home environment prior to install. I was excited to try this company as I'm looking to build three homes in the next 14 months. Alas, my experience with Semihandmade has been mediocre at best. After reviewing my cabinetry order with them twice, I was sent an incorrect door size in which I had to wait over a month to receive the replacement. They also miscalculated a panel that I needed so I had to cut off a portion of a panel that wasn't needed. But what the worst part of my experience with their products and customer service was dealing with their floating shelves. Based off my kitchen design, I purchased two 36"x12" floating shelves. Having used floating shelves from many companies, their $180 each are THE WORST. After my contractor, carpenter, and and I struggled to figure out how to get the floating shelf to stay onto the wall without sagging and wiggling, they advised me there is a video to show me how to stuff it with newspaper and cardboard. So right there, they admit that the design of their floating shelves are flawed. I gave up with the shelves after I tried gluing the shelves to the wall to help support it only to find it sag again with any weight upon it. What's the point of 12" shelves. Finally, after waiting a month for them to follow up with me from their resolution center, I finally called them and spoke with Jessica. She responds after reviewing the photo, they could either have me ship the shelves back BUT that it could become damaged in shipping and they'd have to void it or I could get a partial refund. After spending around $2k to re-plaster the wall where the shelves were glued, and change my backsplash to tile all the way up to our soffit, I wanted nothing to do with these shelves. So Jessica responds with, we can offer you 20% partial refund b/c too much time has passed. Excuse me but I had to wait for the shipment of everything to install everything. And I phoned soon after as I had other issues. It's unfortunate b/c I already have two more homes I am planning to build in the next three months and I want nothing to do with Semihandmade after spending $6k on their doors this time to learn they can't refund me $368 for shelves that they tell people to stuff cardboard and newspaper into. Pathetic. Save your money and stick with IKEA. I'll be sure to tell others how disappointing this experience has been and go with Kokeena or The Cabinet Face with the next house. read more

We live in Connecticut and thus all of our interactions with Semihandmade were via phone and email. Customer service was great. I talked with Veronica, oh probably 1,000 times asking many questions, tweaking our order and getting things delivered and installed. She was polite and did a great job working with us. In fact, I called so many times that Veronica began to recognize my number and answer the phone with "hi Jim!" When things arrived, they were labeled and packed amazingly well and not a single thing was damaged. I was super impressed with all the little details spent in shipping. This was important because these things aren't cheap. And if anything needs to be sent back, it takes awhile. So getting things right the first time is super important. And this is exactly what happened. Quality of doors and panels is high. We got the flatsawn walnut with horizontal grain and the sequenced doors/panels look amazing. Sure, it's not cheap. But for us, using Ikea base cabinets allowed us to splurge with Semihandmade doors to get a custom look that we could never have afforded. We wound up paying someone to install the panels because they needed scribing to the walls and leveling with the floors. This was $$ well spent because the installer did things right didn't screw up (unlike me!) But other than that, we did all the work. Semihandmade isn't cheap. But you get a custom look for less. At the end of the day we're super, super happy. read more

I am so happy I found out about semi handmade when doing my home renovations. It was worth the extra investment for the custom kitchen look. With the custom doors and the IKEA cabinets it was still significantly less than a Home Depot kitchen. You know the phrase measure twice cut once, the same holds true with ordering your doors. IKEA helped us design our kitchen and they messed up leaving us to have to reorder some doors from Semihandmade. I would recommend you splurge on the design services they list on their site. Semihandmade did accidentally give us the wrong size drawers for one section so triple check their order! They were right on schedule with their production time of 5 weeks. We rented a uHaul to pick the items up. Check your pieces as some of them are really long. They recommend blankets but they do a pretty good job wrapping them. I took off a star for their error and the local pickup fee. I don't understand why I am being charged to pick something up. I ordered the DIY shaker. Painting was intense so make sure you are up for the project if you are doing it yourself. They offer discounts from time to time so check their Facebook page. read more
