With the Israeli blood inside of me, I was obviously ECSTATIC to find out that a specialty halvah shop opened up at Chelsea Market. I love to enjoy sesame seeds in all forms whether it's biting into halvah covered in chocolate or drizzling raw tahini in my mouth. My Israeli mother could not believe her eyes when I sent her pictures of Seed + Mill's gorgeous halvah 'cakes'. Once we got ourselves there, we grew as excited on line as little children get waiting for ice cream. There were so many awesome flavors - how to choose one!? Rose? Pistachio? Date? Luckily they are super generous and allowed us to try a few. The chocolate orange caught our attention with its marbled colors and chunks of candied orange pieces. My mom & I spent the whole day picking at our halvah slices and felt waves of pure satisfaction with each and every bite. I am BEYOND excited to go back for more! read more

YUM! Visited this place on Saturday (it's a little tricky to find) and was so pleasantly surprised. a) if you're desi and have ever had soan papdi, that's the consistency of this halva - AKA it melts in your mouth; b) it's made from sesame, which I did not realize, and is quite sweet, if that's your jam; c) there are soo many flavors to choose from, many of which are vegan (and there is no difference), and the lovely employees will happily give you as many samples as you would like. My favorite thing on the menu [surprisingly] was the soft serve goat milk ice cream with tahini! I am neither a fan of goat milk nor tahini but wow, this combo worked SO well. It was so yummy, refreshing, and not too sweet! The goat milk flavor was not pungent or overbearing like a lot of other goat milk products and the tahini was a liquidy topping that just worked! Today they had salted caramel soft serve and vegan chocolate soft serve. The vegan chocolate soft serve was divine! This time the guy asked if I wanted toppings. I guess it is an option that I wasn't asked about last time. You have to say yes to the tahini drizzle and halva topping. The ice cream is good but with the topping it's even better! So my review is based on product and service. Now the product I tried, the ice cream was amazing. I loved it!!! However my experience with the service left me unable to rate this business any higher. See I watched the server put on clean gloves, dig her hand in the sesame sample and hand it to me. She crushes it with her fingers and puts it into a sample cup. Then when I told her I would like a small ice cream she went and got me that and then proceeded to work the register and ask me to put my money in her gloved hands! What???? I had to point out to her that she had gloves on as she says to me "I know" ok well that's gross.. she took the gloves off but not without attitude. Seriously? I hope the owner reads this and comes up with a better plan on how to serve and accept payment because the staff clearly needs some direction on how to do that! It's a nice concept using sesame seeds to make desserts but I don't understand the hype. It's like eating crystallized cotton candy, but with more earthy flavors. Again, I like the idea of the dessert but texture and taste is maybe one star. Why make your life more complicated when you can grab other delicious healthier desserts?? (I.e.: granola, smoothie bowls, candied nuts, dark chocolate, etc.) Ps. Korean people make desserts with sesame seeds and I assure you it is at least fifty times tastier, nuttier, and nutritious. Pps. I should have gotten the name of this puerto-rican looking girl who works there (and seems to be one of the managers), but she is fucking rude. I'm still mad at myself that I didn't ask for her name. Seed+mill, if you're reading this, I was there at around 1pm today. She completely ignored my questions after having greeted me and tended to tourists who didn't even end up purchasing any of this mediocre dessert. She ignored my requests and I idiotically asked another staff member to help me with my purchase (which I didn't enjoy enough to finish) Let's just say the verdict is, this "one-of-a-kind" dessert tastes just as good as my customer service experience. The Tahini goat milk ice cream at this new kiosk in the recently revamped section of Chelsea Market is excellent (a flavor never available at Victory Garden on my visits, but definitely on par quality-wise, which makes sense since they make it http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/27/dining/vincent-price-cookbook.html?partner=rss&emc=rss ), even if the halva topping didn't make for a tidy dessert and the date molasses syrup was underwhelming (at least they charged me just $4.90 despite a sign for $1.00 for toppings). Second time here and just as good as the first. Love the goat milk ice cream with the topping (halvah and a seed syrup). There is one standard cup size, but this time they served way more than what they served me the first time i went, which is great! I tried the halvah alone, but prefer it with the ice cream. With the ice cream it is super refreshing and the taste is very light. Warning: the ice cream is goat milk ice cream which may be an acquired taste for some, but i think it is great. They also have other halvah flavors to buy and eat alone which I was told was better than what store bought halvah tastes like. I do not doubt that at all. Recommended. read more

I ran by Seed + Mill this evening to get my halva fix and was blown away by the quality of the halva and by the kindness of the three individuals working behind the counter. This is seriously the best halva I've ever had in the States, and is just as legit as any halva I've sampled in Israel. I got to sample their date halva and their marble chocolate halva - both flavors were really delicious. The texture of their halva is so smooth and really melts in your mouth. They clearly use super high quality tahini and put so much care into making each flavor. I was the also really impressed by their warm and attentive customer service. Great quality products, I'd be happy to come back after they'd work out the little kinks though. Especially the ice cream pricing. I happen to work in the vicinity and sometimes get myself the goat milk ice cream with halva. And each time my ice cream looks very different. Sometimes they have different cone options, sometimes they don't. Also sometimes there is more cone than ice cream itself. Just today i got it in a waffle cone and the content was less than the cup size. For $8+ dollars, I expect a bit more than a scoop of ice cream. Ice cream isn't their primary business so i understand the little mistakes, but then again I'm a paying customer who is a regular. and I feel a little cheated on days like today, which has happened quite a few times. There is an ice cream shop couple of blocks away called victory garden and they serve the same goat milk ice cream with halva for $5.50. I'd say do away with the cone and go with 2 different cup sizes, and maybe use pieces of waffle as decoration. read more

Best ice cream ever!! We had just eaten a huge lunch so we were not looking for any dessert yet. However, we passed by and were intrigued. We started tasting the different kinds of halva which were all delicious - perfect consistency. Marzipan was our favorite (but we only tried a few - would love to go back and try more next time!). Then we noticed the soft serve flavors - salted caramel and chocolate tahini. We couldn't resist and got a mixture of both sprinkled with halva. They'll let you sample things, but I would definitely recommend getting the halva and sesame topping on the ice cream if you go that route. To be honest we only ended up trying it because we were offered samples after staring for a while trying to figure out whether or not they were cakes, but the samples clued us in on this lightly sweet, creamy, nutty treat. I love sesame and the idea of incorporating it into a versatile desert/topping/spread. We sampled the coconut and 70% dark chocolate halvas; the latter was very rich and indulgent but not very strongly chocolatey. First of all, the service is rushed and no one takes the time to actually explain to you how things work. I found the lady behind the counter getting agitated with me every time I asked a question. Second, the prices here are WHACK. Given that halva is actually super cheap to buy everywhere else, the fact that I spent $40+ on 2 tiny sample packs and 2 ice creams blows my mind. I went to Chelsea market to get something for lunch, but wasn't really in the mood for anything I saw. On my way out, I passed Seed + Mill. At first I decided I wasn't going to get anything, since I needed lunch - not dessert. But when I saw the sign for Goat Milk Ice Cream, I decided that I'd treat myself to a bit of a sweet lunch today. The owner kindly let me taste the ice cream before filling up a full cup for me, since he said that it's not everyone's taste and he wanted to make sure I enjoyed it. It was delicious! The sesame flavor is subtle which is great, since sometimes ice cream flavors can be really strong and overpowering. I decided to go for the extra toppings - freshly ground tahini (they literally grind it as you stand there) and chunks of Halva. They are very generous with the amount of halva they give, which was a wonderful surprise. Seriously - get the toppings. It's worth the extra dollar. Until I discovered Seed + Mill in the middle of Chelsea Market, I thought I already knew and tasted halva. But I think I was confused with another Mediterranean sweet treat because halva looks like nothing I ate before. So for my first discovery of halva, I was pretty happy that they had so many flavours for me to choose from. I had a piece of the hazelnut-Nutella and one piece from the rose oil halva. Piece of advice : be sure to eat it soon enough, this treat is gooey and very soft. But it doesn't matter if it looks weird, because it tastes amazing. My favourite was the rose one, so delicate ! The only negative point for me is the price : 6$/lb, and even if you ask for a small size, they have to cut it thick enough, so I holds its shape. But if you're looking for something sweet to bring to a friends dinner party, don't look further : halva is original and tasty. read more
