Seed and Mill is a cute little booth in Chelsea Market offering blocks of different flavored halva for dessert, as well as some goat cheese soft serve and tahini. The setup is pretty adorable -- they have a case filled with giant blocks of halva and even allow you to sample the different flavors like you would at an ice cream store before buying slices or "bites" (which are really just crumbled up pieces of halva). The flavors are inventive and range from a variety of chocolate, spices, and floral oils -- they even have sugar-free versions! They're generous with samples, and we tried almost all flavors before settling on rose oil and white chocolate and lemon -- both were excellent. We topped that off with freshly churned vanilla soft serve topped with halva crumbles. Also amazing. read more

If I were to offer one suggestion though, it would be if you live on the west coast, order in the winter instead of the summer, because it's shipped usps and the chocolate kind of melts on the way because it takes 3 days and if you have a late afternoon mail delivery, (as I do) it is on the mail truck all day. I grew up on those little Joyva halvah bars, and even those are so hard to find these days. Seed + Mill has filled that void in my stomach. I'd originally spotted little containers in Whole Foods, but the price was steep. Lo and behold, you can get a lot more for your buck online and access all their flavors. Ordering is by weight, which is great for trying a little bit of everything. Their classic marble halvah is SO good. Just the perfect texture. Definitely recommend them highly. read more

The place is dirty despite the nice display. The jar from which they get the crumbs for the ice cream looks nasty, with the soon they use along with the occasional hair you get in your ice cream toppings. But I like the Tahini sauce. read more

I really like the black sesame tahini ice cream! The normal tahini tasted too goat-y for me. Sadly I forgot I was lactose intolerant and could only finish half of it. They give a huge portion though! read more

Very interesting dessert called Hala. It's made with a sesame seed base. It's gluten and dairy free with almost a nougetty flavor. Owner said it is not as popular in the States and it was the first time seeing it. They have many flavors and let you sample which is also fun. Definitely worth a try! read more

This is not our parents' slice of halvah from the deli. If you're thinking Joyva, notch it up about a million times. That is Seed and Mill. When I go to Chelsea Market I head straight there, spend eighty bucks or so and am a happy woman. The halva is that good. I also keep a jar of their tahini and put it on everything. Awesome! Never liked halva in the past but apparently I never had good halva - and this isn't good halva, it's great halva. It is kind of like comparing canned olives to fresh olives (you try the canned stuff and get turned off to olives until years later when you have some amazing fresh olives and realize you have been missing out for years). LOVE what Seed + Mill is doing with tahini halva and goat milk ice cream. The rose halva was sugar-coma, which in my case is a good thing. Loved the thick texture and creamy, even consistency. Rose flavor was super powerful but not soapy--so good. The matcha and plain tahini goat milk ice cream swirl on conery matcha cone topped with more milled tahini was so refreshing. Goat milk flavor was more than subtle and creeps up more and more, super long finish. Highly recommend trying it. I prefer it to that of Victory Garden. Could have been been a bit thicker and creamier in texture but perhaps that is a goat milk thing as Victory Gardens' was a bit watery too. read more

I ordered from Seed + Mill in the Spring and had the BEST service. They were out of a flavor I requested but worked with me to find a different one that was DELICIOUS (I think it was cinnamon, my new fave). When I was in NYC this summer, I visited them at the Chelsea Market and carried home 2 lbs of halva back to CA...clearly, this is delicious. My mom went to the city again this fall and came home with another pound for me...but only 1/2 of it made it back because she discovered that it was as good as I reported! This is a great source for scrumptious, authentic halva and it is a MUST on all of my NYC trips. Also - the shipping option is AMAZING and I plan on using it very soon for all my holiday wishes! Excellent halava and tahini yogurt. The best you can get. It's expensive but worth it. I do have a complaint as I was in Chelsea Market this past weekend and wanted the tahini ice cream. I approached the line and it wasn't moving. I went up to the counter and asked what a group of four people were doing (looked like they were lingering), and I was told "they are debating what they want". However I was eager to pay and order. There was another employee with her back to the line (possibly on her cell phone, but I couldn't really see). I was in a hurry so had to leave. Maybe they need to re-configure the shop a bit so that people looking into the display case don't block/slow down those who are eager to pay and order. read more

I have never had halva before and this was amazing. It's like sinewy peanut butter cake. It's just a counter that looks like cakes. It has a big description of what tahini is and you can try samples. The pistachio was my favorite. You can order different size pieces but the smallest was a sliver of cake about $7. Highly recommend if you eat in Chelsea market his this up for dessert. read more

Growing up on Halavah I always loved it but never knew how complex and simple at the same time sesame seeds could be. Everything is made fresh on site with a large variety of flavors and finishing touches. The quality has been unsurpassed even by the many dessert places I visited in Israel. Love!!! Came to place during lunch time and I think people were skeptical of halva, not knowing what it is, so it there were no customers which was great because the girl behind the counter offered me samples and I ran with it and sampled like half their flavors! I have to say most of them taster the same for me! She even admitted that the flavors are very very subtle and mostly taste the same.... The only areas they have the actual flavor of the particular item you get is at the top and bottom. So for instance the ginger halva, she said it tasted like all the other ones except I'd get pieces of ginger at the bottom. The matcha one only tastes like match at the top where the matcha powder is, etc etc. So I knocked off a star for that, but I do like the base flavor of all the halva so I enjoyed them anyways! I especially liked the dark chocolate sea salt, the top layer with the chocolate and sea salt with the halva is delicious! Btw they don't make the halva locally, they ship it in from Israel. read more

First off I am Lebanese and Halva is one of my favorite sweet treats. This place does an awesome job at reinventing a middle eastern classic with a variety of unique flavors. Most of their Halva is vegan and naturally gluten free. Sesame is a nutrient dense food that is usually only found on bagels in America. They do a great job marketing the health benefits of tahini and sesame seeds. The goat cheese ice cream is awesome, especially with the halva. I had the chocolate chili and my mother tried the ginger (not vegan since they use butter). The texture can be off putting for someone first trying out this dessert which kind of looks like a bath bomb from Lush. However once you start to dig in, the sugar and the seeds form a snow flake looking texture that just melts in your mouth. Great spot for vegans and gluten free eaters to get a rich and dense dessert. read more

I live in a small city in Oregon, and up to now couldn't get the wonderfully fresh halva I remembered from my childhood in Philly. So, when I found the Seed and Mill website, I ordered quarter pounds of a variety of flavors. My order arrived quickly and very well packaged. The flavors are exquisite. I've offered tastes to guests who drop by, and everyone has been impressed. I'll be ordering again, and plan on giving quarter pounds as small holiday gifts. Must stop at this little shop inside Chelsea Markets. First of all the staff is incredible and patient as they introduced us to what halva was and provided us with various samples of all the different varieties. I'd go crazy having to deal w all the tourists asking for samples, but they keep a smile on their face and positive attitude through and through. Secondly, they have great offerings. We visited this place on a hot and humid summer day, so choosing the soft serve goats milk ice cream was a no brainer. We got 1 w halva crumbles and the other with tahini sauce. Both were amazing and we would definitely recommend it to anyone especially if they have a gluten and/or dairy allergy ;) read more

Wow, wow, wow! I found halva heaven today! There are so many flavors to choose form. I bought the lemon and white chocolate and ate the whole piece before we got home! I also bought a jar of the herb tahini. i used it for tonight's dinner over some baked potatoes. Even my kids loved it, which isn't always the case when we try new products. I had to wait at the register for a while to pay and thought the check out system was a bit disorganized but forgivable since they only just opened.Definitely worth the trip to chelsea market just for this! read more

For those of us who have European or Middle Eastern parents, this is a taste of childhood. I've never seen a Halvah Bar before - it was fantastic! While it was $6 for a sampling, you couldn't eat all of it in a sitting (like some of the $5.00 cupcakes up the hall). Halvah is a delicacy that is rich and satisfying. Excellent high quality halva. I tried the bites for $6 and was given 3 different flavors. I got coffee , cocoa nibs and a third flavor I can't remember but I really enjoyed munching on all three. They were all served together in a paper fold and that did cause them to mix unfortunately but it was damn good anyway.
