I wish more of the pasta was made in house, and I wish there were more seafood options given the location to the coast (oysters, scallops, mussels, and lobster come to mind.) We have been wondering about Secundo and after reading the mixed reviews on Google we felt it was time to give it a go ourselves. There is street parking near and around. So not a problem. The dark paint exterior gives it a sheik feel and stands out a bit with the neighborhood. First thing was the music was not Italian but I loved it. The inside was fine. Plenty of seating options. At the bar, high tops, long table or table for two. I felt they could if utilized the space better and took advantage of the brick walls more with seating but it was fine. Drink menu was good. Definitely priced at high end bar experience so would hope for a full bar but not sure. Only had wine which was very good. Nice menu and priced a bit higher than other places in the area. The portions were actually bigger than we expected, so it was a good idea to share. Yes we had a lot of green at our table. Ha ha The focaccia was pretty good, however the first dab of butter came with a HIT of salt which caught us off guard. But once I knew. It was quite enjoyable. Our meals were very good and provided a lot of flavors. Some reviews shared a lack of seasoning and I did not have that issue. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They all work together for the most part so the food came out fast and we truly enjoyed the evening. The potential is there for a nice intimate experience if that is the plan. The menu was so tiny and overpriced. I think the place has real potential but thinks it's much fancier than its current faire. I thought my pork belly dish was okay, there was far too much fat on it. My husband had a dish that's not on the menu currently (might have been a special) but he said it was also just okay. I hope they get better with time! read more

Secundo has been operating for four months now and shows a lot of promise. We had dinner there last night with my daughter and son-in-law. It's located in the space formerly occupied by Engrain. Plenty of on-street parking. The atmosphere needs a little work - feels kind of spare. The bench seats need cushions, and they should ditch those uncomfortable sheet-metal stools and seats. The front of the house could use some attention. Mimsy and I got dry martinis, and they were somehow wet. The gin flavor was faint. Too much vermouth I think. I got the pork belly, which was great. Mimsy got the cacio e pepe which tasted good but was dry. The kids got build your own charcuterie boards which were also good. It's pricey for what they offer. Hopefully they will hit their stride. We had a wonderful dinner at Secundo last night. The menu is small and concise, l which I always take to mean that they focus on what they do best while still offering sufficient choices. We started with 3 apps: the olives, carrots with marscapone, and a green salad. All 3 were very good. Our server was pleasant, friendly and accommodating. We shared a lovely bottle of Dolcetto that complemented all 4 entrees: the pasta with Italian sausage, the braised beef with polenta, the eggplant, and the cacio de Pepe. We ALL loved our meals and happily exchanged bites so we could all have the "full experience". The vibe is comfortable and relaxing. As another reviewer said, cushions on the benches would be an enhancement. All in all, a lovely dinner and pleasant night out. We will be back soon! read more

First time here, for date night. We dressed up but plenty of people were casual too. The place isn't huge, the decor was very nice inside. The menu is very limited, but what we had was good (chicken Parm, lobster fettuccini, adequate tiramisu). Prices weren't exactly cheap eats but not outrageous either. Service was friendly, maybe a little on the slow side. As others have mentioned there are no extras like bread offered for the table. I was also surprised there was no sangria on the menu like at most other Italian restaurants. When I asked about making a vegetable substitution in the fettuccini (broccoli instead of cherry tomatoes), there was a bit of hemming and hawing even though broccolini was part of several other dishes. They were able to accommodate in the end and it was delicious. Overall a decent place, and nice to have something a little fancier local if you want to feel a little more upscale. read more

This restaurant is a gem in southern Maine. The menu is purposefully curated to support farm to table, so everything is fresh and full of flavor. We had the focaccia bread served with whipped butter and olive oil -a must! The burrata was served with winter root vegetables and vinaigrette as a refreshing appetizer. The freshly made gnocchi with light cream sauce and crispy broccolini was delicious. The risotto was creamy and smooth with tender eggplant. Dessert was an individual ramekin of tiramisu that delicately topped off the meal. The ambiance is upscale casual and the service was friendly and attentive. Maybe the problem was that we had high expectations based on the recommendations from others, but this was a completely disappointing experience. Slow service to a ridiculous degree. When you have a small staff in a restaurant like this, each person needs to be efficient and look out for opportunities to provide service- water refills, drink reorders, food running, etc. Let's face it- Most restaurants fail, and in order to be successful each team member needs to go out of their way to make sure the guest experience is impeccable. It was infuriating to watch the hostess flit around while glasses went empty. Food was good, service was friendly but there's no way a restaurant can survive when a 2 top spends 1 hr 45 mins on 2 drinks and 2 courses. read more

A delightful find in South Berwick, Maine! My wife and I were passing by and hungry when this restaurant caught our eye. It's been open for about 7 months. Easy parking close by. The decor vibe is relaxed with terrific staff and quiet dining. We started with an antipasto selection (Salumi e Formaggio) of cured meats (think Parma Ham for one) local cheese, pickled beans, relish, and a thin cracker. A terrific yet small wine list of Italian wines. My wife ordered the Lamb Bolognese and I the Cacio e Pepe alla Chitarra. The bolognese was the best dish (Cacio a close second) with a terrific hint of mint thanks to the mint gremola. Layers of flavor and exciting dish. The Cacio e Pepe was perfect, just the right amount of pepper and Parmigiano cheese. For both dishes, the pasta was cooked perfectly. We did not order any dessert or mains but all sounded great. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. This restaurant's approach seems like a Trattoria you'd find in the Piedmont region of Italy. A cozy seasonal menu focuses on local ingredients and traditional Italian cuisine. Excellent value for the quality of the food served. The total bill was $98.82 including taxes, one glass of wine (Tenuta San Pietro Gavi), and a large bottle of San Perigrino. It will be our go-to stop when we are visiting that area.
