Salt is a smaller spot inside the hotel. No issue getting a table (on a Sunday night). The atmosphere is very nice and there is a dome overhead, which causes some interesting acoustic effects and makes for good eavesdropping. The haddock was done well with a nice sweet potato puree. The salmon and risotto were also very good. The brussel sprouts needed a bathing suit, however, as there were swimming in a vinegar sauce. The server was very friendly, but the food was slow. We waited 45 minutes for our food, and the place was not crowded. They charged $6 dollars for half a baguette. Given how much the food cost, I thought that was kind of cheap. We also had breakfast there the following morning ... the toast, syrup, oatmeal and coffee were spot on! read more

How delightful to walk in to one of the best five star hotel's restaurants and be greeted by the energetic kindest happiest server ever;, Sawyer. His knowledge about appetizers and main entrees was helpful. We started with meatballs that clearly consisted of pork, veal. and beef with a touch of parmigano. The Burrata DI BUFALA was certainly a hit! I attempted to complete my experience with the Mushroom Bucatini with flavors bursting on my palate. I can't say enough about the staff, food, and setting of Salt. The team helped us arrange a dinner for 22 people in a private room. We had prefixed meal with a salmon, steak, and vegetable option. Dinner was proceeded by appetizers and finished with excellent desert options. The food was excellent, but most importantly the hospitality of the restaurant was top notch. Dinner was served professionally with multiple waiters placing all prepared dishes in perfect unison. What's even more impressive is the service was perfect despite our large group showing up almost an hour late to dinner! I'd attended a wedding at Wentworth by the Sea, and SALT is their on site restaurant. The entire property is adorably appointed in Christmas finery, made all the more picturesque by the overnight snowfall. I was breakfasting solo and led to a nicely set table. My server was friendly and provided adequate attention. The fruit plate with vanilla yogurt and granola was surprisingly generous, given typical resort a la carte pricing. It even came with a muffin! My server thought the day's selection was blueberry, but in fact, it appeared to be a Morning Glory (even better!). The hot tea service features Tea Forte and fills exactly one mug. While other tables were given coffee carafes, I was never asked if I wanted a second cup, proof the world caters to coffee drinkers! Typically I'd head into town to enjoy breakfast at a local diner, but decided to treat myself on property. The surroundings are certainly elegant. read more

For our 43rd Anniversary (it's today the 28th but we celebrated last night), we visited Salt at The Wentworth for THE FIRST TIME! We usually do the holiday celebrations there but have not eaten dinner. First call out, because she made the evening SO lovely, is to our server Julia! Seriously, if you make a reservation, request her - I cannot say enough positive things about Julia. We went at 5:30 with reservations (you need them) by 6:30 it was packed. As for our meals, WOW. I'll let the photos speak for themselves with just a couple of comments. Lobster Bisque - if I was alone, I would have LICKED THE BOWL. Lobster Fettuccine - first photo is pretty, started eating/stirring and then found this MASSIVE claw on the bottom - there was already A LOT of lobster meat and when I found the claw I thought - bummer, it's really big and will be tough - IT WAS NOT, and it was delicious. Mushroom Bucatini - this is the dish to get if you love mushrooms, it was so creamy and delicious! Pasta for each dish was fresh and cooked perfectly. I RARELY order dessert - just share whatever Jim gets but I ordered my own. Jim got the Alaskan Campfire - it had a massive marshmallow toasted on top, amazing ice cream, hot fudge, and flourless chocolate cake! I got the Not Quite a Brownie Sundae - just WOW. The cannoli ice cream was CRAZY GOOD. Cherry compote was PERFECT. Price: $$$ - $$$$ but honestly, for a celebration it was worth every penny. We will definitely go back. read more

Tucked on the ocean but you forget about that as soon as you walk in. Arrive early as the bar is a great place to wait with very helpful and entertaining bartenders. Our reservation was at 5 pm so we seated as soon as we were ready. We enjoyed watching the team prepare food in the open kitchen. A fantastic restaurant in the Wentworth hotel and spa in New Castle, an island off of the beautiful seaside town of Portsmouth, New Hampshire (on the border of Maine, one of my favorite states). It's a spacious, lavish area with a bit of an ocean view as well and great service. I was fortunate enough to eat there twice, having to indulge in my love of lobster since I knew it would be fresh. The first night I started with delicious meatballs and then Frutti Di Mare, which was outstanding in every way. A generous portion of black squid ink linguini pasta is topped with numerous mussels, three good sized scallops, and an entire lobster tail! This dish was practically made for me. The sauce was a bit spicy but fitting, and I assume it's one of the best versions of Frutti Di Mare you can have. They even top it off with two pieces of toast with a kind of bacon butter or something. It was all glorious. Then the next day I had to try their lobster roll, which was excellent as well. An oversized grilled hot dog bun is filled to the brim with claw and tail meat alike, and make sure to squeeze plenty of lemon all over it to bring out all the incredible flavors. Without a doubt Salt restaurant is worth visiting if you're staying at the Wentworth, a highlight of my trip. read more

Beautiful location on our way to Kennebunkport. The first time we went we had the lobster bisque, salmon dip and charcuterie. Lobster bisque is served cool which was tasty. The charcuterie was full of cheese and some meats some pecans, jerkins, baby onions but no fruit or jam which is needed. The second time we had the "bacon" sandwiches with French fries which were bland and tasteless. The ciabatta bread was grilled and burned and the cheese melted crispy onto the bacon. Very thin and no flavor, mostly bread. Tasted like cardboard and the burned bread made it almost inedible. I found the menu to be trendy. I'm a foodie and have eaten all over the world so this was pretty disappointing for such a great setting. No complaints about the service. read more

We had a truly outstanding experience at Salt last night. Our large party of 10 was seated in a gorgeous private room at no extra cost and the room was simply perfect. Gorgeous long table, stunning decor, perfect ambiance -- this is a great choice for a special occasion or a nice night out with a large group. Our server, Ethan, and his team were terrific -- knowledgeable, efficient, polite and kind, always anticipating our needs beforehand. The food, wine and cocktails were delicious. Our experience was so outstanding that we plan to make our Salt dinner an annual Holiday event as well as our go-to place for special occasions and large groups. Bravo Salt! read more

Ambiance is spectacular and so beautiful , but pretty disappointed with service once we received our food maybe 2 star. Not a packed house at all and it took forever. Not sure if it was our server or the kitchens fault. Also out of many items. it's a holiday week but not having 6 -7 of some of your more popular selections is not acceptable. Plan accordingly after all it's not cheap and I travelled close to an hour specifically for 2 out of the 7 items they were out of. Food we ordered was delicious. We had nothing else to do though, so we just waited but that needs to be better for the atmosphere and caliper they are trying to be at. Server Chris was ok. Not super attentive, but that's probably because we are sober and didn't get a drink menu. We find if we don't order alcohol, we don't get the same service as of we did drink (generally at most restaurants). Wouldn't go out of our way to dine there if we were in the area again. read more

I visited Salt Kitchen and Bar while visiting some family friends and had a nice meal there. Our table ordered the mushroom risotto, two fish dishes and their spaghetti dishes too. The food was overall satisfying, with generously portioned dishes that left us feeling quite content. The freshness of their seafood was a highlight. Most menu items leaned towards being cheesy and rich and definitely were very indulgent. The risotto was a prime example of this with the oil on the bottom overshadowing the rest of the flavors a bit too much. The real star of the show, however, was the restaurant's ambiance. Salt Kitchen and Bar boasts a stunning atmosphere with private dining rooms, a gorgeous ceiling, classy decor and cleanly environment. The beautiful decor and thoughtful lighting create a sophisticated yet welcoming environment, perfect for special occasions or to treat yourself. Despite the positive aspects, the service to deliver our food was slightly slow. There was a noticeable wait for our food and a wait to be seated but it was around 8-9 when we arrived so it could be understandable. That said, the overall experience was still enjoyable, and the lovely atmosphere compensated for the extended wait. read more

Beautiful and historic hotel and restaurant. Ambience is great, although a bit noisy, which is typical nowadays. Service was impeccable. Food was five star all the way. The fancy food was all done proper, but the surprise star of the show was the flatbread pizzas! Hard to describe, but we tried two of the four and they were like nothing you can get anywhere else. Not your normal, every day pizza. Lots of cute nooks and crannies to hang out in, both lunch and dinner were superb. Beautiful views, and even the lobby is worthy of relaxing and hanging out in. Beautiful dining room! Unfortunately the food was disappointing. The lobster bisque was so small and just a tiny small pieces of lobster. My friend's sandwich was very average. The most disappointing though was the service. We were brought our lunch and the server never came back. After a very long time I looked for help. I was hesitant to have breakfast here since I'm horribly gluten intolerant and didn't see alternatives as an option. However, I saw some reviews that said there's GF bread, so I decided to chance it. For starters, the restaurant is absolutely beautiful. Hand-painted cherubs are on the ceiling, and there's a dreamy coastal theme throughout the dining area. When we were seated, the waitress immediately confirmed they had GF bread as an option. My husband and I ordered the All-American Breakfast, but he had the muffin (contains gluten) while I had the GF toast. It wasn't too greasy, and the food was served hot. For the prices, you get the best bang for your buck. I'd also recommend reservations since it's a busy place. On our next stay at the Wentworth, we will definitely return to Salt! read more

Stayed at the hotel 1 night on a recent trip and came down to the restaurant for brunch. We ordered 3 entrees to share. The food took a while to come out due to short staffing. But it was worth the wait. Egg Benedict was really tasty. French toast was crispy and cooked perfectly. The lox bagel was soft and fluffy. No complaints about the food. The only problem was the service was super slow and our drinks were never refilled despite asking multiple times. We had to get our own water and the kitchen was super slow. Dined here on Father's Day and was very disappointed. The place is clean and so nice, it's a shame that the food is inconsistent and ridiculously expensive. I had the lamb this time and it was just ok. Bland and not worthy of the $64 price tag. The mussels were not good at all this time around and the other two entree's were also a major let down. The chicken saltimbocca was overcooked and bland. The WALNUT PESTO FUSILLI was also bland and disappointing. Two of us had the Hearts of Romaine salad which really is a Caesar salad. I'd give the salad 3.5 stars, it was also on the bland side. Finally, we had the margarita flatbread as an appetizer. I'd give that four stars. The stone oven flatbreads are very good and if I ever go back...that's about all I'd have. Otherwise, service was excellent and desert was delicious. I don't mind paying a premium for great food but this was average food at best. There are so many other great restaurants just minutes away in Portsmouth, serving much better food at half the price. Salt just isn't what it used to be. Years ago you could expect fine food, fine dining and great service. Until now we last dined here about three years ago and while the food was good, the service was awful. We decided to give this another chance for restaurant week, and while the food was good, service could have been a bit better. Our waitress was charming, but simply had too many tables to take care of. She advised they were severely short handed. I hate to complain about that as I realize many restaurants are having problems finding help. but perhaps they should cut back on the number of tables served? It took a good 15 minutes for our cocktails to be brought to the table, and we could see them sitting for about 5 minutes at the bar. All of this said, the lobster bisque is still worth a visit, but perhaps this venue is now best for a drink and a snack. If you are planning a full dinner, be sure to give yourself plenty of time and patience. read more

We were exhausted from the long travel day so we ordered room service. The menu looked great. We ordered: Kids chicken tenders & fries: they were really good and the French fries were salty - yummy!! Kids pepperoni pizza: my son ate the whole thing so you can tell it was delicious. Sweet pea tagliatelle + lobster (why not?): Delicious. I would highly recommend this dish. The fried pancetta, the lobster, everything about the dish was amazing. You can also order a half or a full portion. The half portion was perfect for me. Humbolt Fog: tomato salad was delicious Butcher's burger: not the best as I was told Breakfast, we dined in and ordered: Chocolate chip pancakes: nice and fluffy Good Start: Granola was delicious and it comes with a choice of toast, English muffin and coffee and juice Bacon, egg and cheese sandwich: delicious. Ordered it twice with crispy bacon bc why not, I love crispy bacon! Son finished the whole thing the next day bc I forgot to save it for him Side of crispy bacon: All gone. Delicious. Overall, the food was great! It's nice to have a good restaurant inside a hotel. It makes it convenient to just walk down and get some food vs driving into town. The gentlemen who was our waiter on 6/12 was amazing. He said the English muffin was really good and he was right. The funny thing about where we sat (near the dome) is that we can hear the people's conversation behind us bc the dome magnified their words. They don't serve brunch. The brown leather chairs next to the windows are disgustingly worn. The waitstaff are a bit disorganized and very short staffed. IOW, getting their attention when they disappear for some time is difficult. Paying for coffee when they have a free coffee urn 20 feet away is ridiculous. And the OJ and a glass of milk will be very expensive. The white coffee carafe was covered in filthy old coffee drip stains left on the table. Breakfast menu had no real depth of dishes and talent. Had to wait 20-30 minutes for a table. And believe me when I say, there were plenty of open tables. Host was not present in front when we arrived and waited 5-10 minutes. For such an old hotel with history going back over 100 years, these new owners miss the mark for what should really be a better dining experience with attentive staff. read more

Firstly, it is in a beautiful and bucolic setting down the road from Portsmouth NH, grounds are landscaped and well groomed. SALT is located within the Wentworth Hotel; we were impressed by the high backed leather comfortable chairs . The table was nicely set. Our server, James, was very personable, explained the evenings menu and took our drink orders, which were excellent. Our meal consisted of PEI Mussels and compressed watermelon with burrata, excellent appetizers. We both had the halibut dish which was very tasty, and especially nicely plated. A delicious selection. The desert selection, while tempting, was too taxing on our full stomach's.
