I came here years ago in Montreal as a coffee lover, and I liked the coffee and pastries. My hotel had coffee at breakfast, but I decided to sleep in and make special trip. This was one of my favorite places to go. Now I am needing decaf, and it is a little longer wait, not to mention none is available in bean form. I asked for decaf and like Starbucks I had to settle for Americano decaf. They had no problem with that, or my English! I get they don't want to waste coffee. I saw they had small donuts, so I got 1 plus a croissant. I sat for a bit in the spacious cafe near the window, and at 9am it was quiet, not hectic. That may be because St. Catherine street is undergoing a LOT of construction right now, and buses are rerouted. I wonder if it used to be very crowded before construction. There is a 2nd level that was not open at the time. When I go back I hope to sit up there. read more

Pretty standard coffee shop. Lots of space inside to sit and work if you would like. The people behind the counter are very nice. You pick out sandwiches from their open frig and then scan it with their scanner. They heat it up for you after you pay. The naan with egg/spinach/Swiss was good. I would have it again. I went here for breakfast today and I got a large iced coffee and unlike Starbucks (in USA) I was able to pour my own milk !! I also got an English muffin with egg and bacon and cheese which was very good. It is open at 7:00 am NOT 8:00 am (which google maps had said). Second Cup really makes me want to go back for seconds. I am wary of chain coffee shops, namely Starbucks. Nevertheless, Second Cup is the exception. It is laid out similarly to Starbucks but it is much more creative and has more variety of food and beverages. I had their mochachino with skim milk and it is made with dark chocolate and espresso. It is so rich I cannot even tell it is actually skim milk. My husband also got a cup of chocolate with mint latte and it is as good as it gets. People are hanging out in the cafe and they have a wide selection of sandwiches, cakes, and desserts. I wish I had a chance to return! read more

Used to come here to grab coffee/study since it was right by my campus but eventually switched to a different Second Cup location. The very first time I came here I was immediately put off because of the service I received. I asked the cashier if they served something similar to a caramel macchiato to which she replied, "it's called a caramel corretto, you're not at Starbucks" in the most rude, insulting tone (completely missing my point). Not gonna lie, this interaction put me in a pretty bad mood - I don't know if this lady had something personal against Starbucks but no customer should get shut down like that just for asking a simple question. Some of the workers here really don't know how to punch things in - you need to double check you're being charged correctly because there have been multiple instances I was charged for the wrong items. The staff here need to be retrained (properly) with the POS and customer service skills. read more

They finally opened the top floor! It's beautiful, spacious, and perfect to sit and get a bit of work/reading done. Before they had the upstairs area, it sucked to come here because it wasn't comfortable. I would just get my drink to go. Now it's great! I like this location, it has lots of food options and the wait is never long. The staff has never messed up my order (I do order the same thing every time though) and they always smile when I visit. Should be 3.5 stars. I'm somewhat surprised with the reviews saying it is a best place in town and giving it 3 stars... Anyway, stopped there for breakfast - I guess it was a mistake, as while I was expecting all the sandwiches to be made on the spot, they were pre-made and only heated up. English muffin was very soggy after that heating up... Coffee was ok, but not great - I have higher expectations for coffee in French Canada. I guess it is a good place if you need WiFi and place to work, but I can't recommend it as a food place. read more

I like the interior design of this coffee shop. I also really, really, took a liking to their red velvet cake! The baristas are very friendly and work quickly even when there's a big lineup. The only downside is the location of the bathroom which is situated at the bottom of a staircase behind a very thick door that looks a bit creepy for my liking. I am thinking that maybe they are using the toilets downstairs while they renovate the bathroom that's inside the coffee shop.. not sure. MOMS BEWARE - in fact, anyone concerned for their health ought to steer clear of this Second Cup and the one at Square Phillips, since they use a highly dangerous cleaning substance improperly. I was handed a cloth to wipe up coffee which spilt all over my skirt due to the barista's clumsiness in overfilling it (it was spilling down the sides under the lid which she put on) and the cleaning product on the cloth ate through the material of my skirt in a matter of seconds! Perfectly diluted it should be safe, but the risky way in which it's being misused by poorly trained employees makes it super dangerous - there are lots of Poison Control warnings on the label!! - even clothing which comes in contact with the product must be carefully washed before rewearing. I wouldn't want my children eating / touching anything at Second Cup, nor my friends or family. I personally won't ever set foot in there again. Needless to say the horrifically incompetent customer service refused to replace the skirt their employee destroyed. read more

Second stop on my first night in Montreal (but First Cup. ha ha). I didn't realize it was a chain coffee shop, until later in my trip - but nonetheless, this is a lovely place for a cup of nice espresso and fantastic selection of pastries (and cheesecake galore). I figured hey.. let's go for a cappuccino, although typically I'd run for a latte. Maybe I thought a cappuccino was more French, in my sleeplessness from the travels. Anytime after 2pm, and it'll be decaf. Yeah, blasphemous, but I don't like to please the insomniac in me. I asked if the pastries are made there, and he said no. But there were a bunch of these mini loaf cakes in a jar up front. They looked perfect and cozy. "Almond shortcake"... sold. Let me tell you, it was one of the best desserts I've had. Barely sweet, very buttery, and moist as can be. My kind of dessert. I almost went back on my final day to pick up a bag of just these. Prices are reasonable, and probably $6-7 (I forget exactly). Great seating up front to catch the view of passers by, heading to and away from Crescent St. Although it's a chain, I think it's limited to Canada. Not sure. If you want a decaf that doesn't taste decaf, and a nice selection of something sweet that isn't necessarily homemade but still quite yummy, give it a try. read more

This place is super cute!!! We stopped by because we stayed close to here when we visited Montreal and we needed some caffeine. It's on Saint Catherine St. so it's in a very busy location. Even though there were a lot of customers, the line still moved really fast. The layout of the place is super inviting and it's just a nice place to grab a drink and chill. I like that there were plenty of seating all throughout the place. I had the vanilla bean latte and it was pretty good. Not too sweet, yet still tasted like vanilla bean. Second Cup is the "big bad Starbucks" in Canada and just as plentiful! There's one in almost every corner. After trekking all day all over Montreal and withstanding the brisk Canadian cold weather, I came here to "warm up". With my remedial French, I got myself a cup of hot coffee. The taste reminds me of Starbucks: moderate bodied coffee with a slight hint of *burnt*. The coffee varies slightly from store to store. However it did the job and warmed me up that day (il pleuvait des chats et des chiens)! The store was clean and orderly. The baristas were very friendly and patient with English-speaking customers. Reading materials were not sprawled all over the place but kept in organized bins. My first choice will always be Tim Horton's but I won't think twice about returning to Second Cup for my java fix! I love trying different coffee places while out of the country, as I'm visiting from America. Coffee here was good! The drink menu is pretty straightforward and the pastry spread looks delicious. I ordered a caramel corretto which I was told was a caramel latte. However, this is not the case. But it was still very tasty and I ended up coming again to get one on another visit. I do think this place can have more than one barista making the drinks as it's a pretty busy location. read more
