He took his time to make sure all my concerns were addressed. He greeted me at the surgery center before the operation to answer any more questions I had and again after surgery. I have had occasional but chronic problems with vision because of intermittent eye dryness. Dr. Hughes has successfully treated me each time I have had a flare up. BEWARE!!!! DECEPTIVE PRACTICES!!! that will leave you with a huge "routine eye-examination" bill. I called and spoke to both the front desk and my insurance company to see if a routine eye exam was covered. Seattle Eye Care confirmed they were in network and that the bill would be a 50 dollar co-pay. I just received my bill for over $200.00. This is due to their billing practices of calling a routine eye-exam a "diagnostic" session so that they can receive less of a payout from the insurance company and place it on the patient. Their billing department is claiming now that they do not offer "routine eye-exams" and all their billing is "diagnostic". Please seek eye-care else ware where you do not become scammed on a 15 minute "eye-exam". read more

Dr. Shields was very rude and unprofessional to me. I saw him twice for a progressing mystery eye issue. When he learned I had psoriasis, he told me to "go back to my dermatologist" and that he didn't want to discuss my "skin problems"! Yes, a medical doctor referred to my other medical condition as "skin problems". I said "Well, I don't think they know very much about eyes, which is why I'm coming to see you - an ophthalmologist". He did not care and told me to go back to dermatology about my eyes. He should have told me to see a Rheumatologist, which I now know but didn't at the time. If I had known, I wouldn't have wasted nearly 2 months being in extreme eye pain trying to get another dermatology appointment! I finally got in with my dermatologist, who said that I needed a rheumatologist & that dermatologists cannot help with eye issues. After reviewing Dr. Shield's chart notes, I also found out that he wrote down incorrect information about what treatments I was trying/had tried already. He recommended that I try some different OTC eyedrops after my 2nd appointment. I was extremely concerned about buying OTC eyedrops, since people have been going blind or dying. During my appointment, I explained that this was a major concern of mine and asked him to write down the EXACT name and type of OTC items to buy. He wrote down 3 options, telling me "Take as many as you can of these 3". 1 was a medication that I was already taking and had told him I was already on, at both appointments. 2 of the 3 options weren't supposed to be taken more than once every 12 hours. The only option available to take frequently from his list was "Refresh - Artificial Tears". Refresh doesn't make anything by that exact name, they make "Refresh - Tears", "Refresh - Plus" and "Refresh - Classic". I emailed the office asking them to confirm the exact name but they were not helpful and would not confirm which type of Refresh I was supposed to buy. I think "artificial tears" means the same thing as "tears" but I am not familiar with these terms - which is why I asked. I do not want to be blinded by OTC eyedrops! I know people have been going blind and dying, so I feel that this is a valid concern. I still do not have an answer to this question. A different doctor here doctor called me after I complained, but what he had me try wasn't helpful. He did seem nice and listened to me, but he never told me to see a Rheumatologist - which is what I actually needed. Dr. Shields was very rushed and tried to get me out of his office as fast as he could both times I saw him. Maybe he's a great surgeon, I don't know - but he did NOT want to be there during my 2 appointments and made that very clear. I recommend going to a doctor who is NOT Dr. Shields if you are having an unexplained issue. Don't waste your time with him if you are having an eye issue that you're trying to figure out. read more

One of the best doctor care experiences. I was unable to get into a corporate eye clinic even though I had lost my vision in one eye, and Seattle Eye Care said come down now on a Friday 3:00 pm. Within two weeks I had surgery and can see clearly again Doctor Shields did fantastic surgery & was so supportive and understanding. Dr Houghton saw me too & both are fabulous, caring, knowledgeable and such a pleasure!!! The staff are all so kind! Both Dr. Grady and Dr. Rerecich are smart, competent, and effective in their treatment choices. I have had appointments with both of them. Both doctors are thoughtful about seeking to get to the root of the problem and/or discuss options for prevention if it is an ongoing/chronic issue. My vision was always very good up until the past 5 - 6 years, during which I've had repeated eye infections which have caused pain, discomfort, and blurred vision. Dr. Rerecich discussed immediate treatment options for my current eye infection that I have now (it hurts my eye to look at the screen, which is why my most recent yelp reviews are significantly shorter than usual in length!). Then she discussed a couple of possible preventative measures so I will hopefully get eye infections less often in the future. I chose the preventative option that best fits my preferences, and the doctor gave me 2 free samples of it. :) The receptionists at this office are all consistently friendly, welcoming, and kind. Highly recommended for all of your eye care needs. read more

After years of going to this place they quit taking our insurance and didn't even tell us. At check in, they took the insurance card, asked if there were any changes (there weren't on our side). Then, instead of a free exam (or copay) as our insurance entitles us to, they sent a bill for over $600! And it was our fault for not checking? But, we did, at check in, give them our card. All the liars and frauds had to do was say, "sorry, not covered". Repeated attempts to resolve were unsuccessful. read more

Dr. Jerry Shields at Seattle Eye Care removed the cataracts (both eyes) and, for an extra charge (not covered by my insurance), inserted lenses that are multifocal (instead of me having to choose between near and far). He was amazing - so kind and patient with me (I had a lot of questions!) - and - one week later my vision has already vastly improved. (It takes a couple of weeks to get the full benefit). read more

I went to see Dr. Hughes because of pain in my upper back and neck. Dr. Grady examined my eyes carefully, watched as I simulated how I use a computer, gave me prescription for some new glasses for use with my computer. Excellent doctors, friendly staff! My husband and I moved to Seattle a few months ago and needed to find new healthcare providers. I first made an appointment with a place close to where we live, just for the convenience. That was a mistake I won't be making again. The first place didn't care about us, they just wanted our money and tried to up-sell us on contacts and glasses. Who does that?! They rushed the appointments and got both our prescriptions wrong. I called my vision insurance provider to ask that we be allowed a second opinion. I did my research and found reviews for Seattle Eye Care for our second appointments. I saw the optometrist & my husband had his appointment with one of the Ophthalmologists. They took their time with us, actually listened to our concerns, and were extremely intelligent yet humble. I highly recommend Dr. Grady Hughes, MD and Seattle Eye Care for all of your eye and corrective lenses/glasses needs. I had something lodged in my eye and Dr. Hughes expertly extracted it with minimal discomfort. He was skilled, very intelligent and compassionate. I also needed new glasses and Shawn helped me pick a stylish yet affordable pair right on the spot. Since Dr. Hughes is an MD my regular (non vision) health insurance plan covered my visit! The overall impression I had of this doctor and clinic was professional, compassionate, expert and patient centered. In the past coupla years I've had some major "issues" with my eyes: tearing, dry eyes, and other problems that I ended up visiting multiple opthalmologists to try to diagnose and cure. I'm talking like 10 visits in the past 4-6 months. Dr Hughes was super-helpful and while he did not ultimately cure my problem, he tried everything he could and took plenty of time to work with me to nail down the issue. He is patient, knowledgeable and helpful (and so is the staff!). At a certain point, he felt I needed to see a specialist and recommended me to 2 other Dr's, one of whom ultimately cured the problem. I really appreciate his patience and the fact that he knew when to refer me to someone who could better address the problem. Eyes are weird and amazing and very complex - don"t trust your eyeballs to just anyone! I highly recommend Dr Hughes and Seattle Eyecare for regular and special eye care. read more

I have never been moved to write a review before. But I called a half dozen eye care places Sunday (yesterday) with concerns about an extremely red, irritated eye. Despite not being a patient here, they called me back first thing this Monday morning, asked about my symptoms (my eye is feeling better) and gave me recommendations for eye drops and eye care. Most places seem to either ignore your call because you're not a patient, or will make you come in for an appointment before helping you. I was blown away.
