I was looking at the chili cheese fries and the street tacos, but I couldn't decide. I said screw it I'm on vacay I'm going for both, and boy I wasn't disappointed! The chili cheese fries: the fries were nice and crispy and the house made chili was tasty. I like the touch of jalapeno to make it a little spicy. I got the three adobo pork tacos, and they were equally tasty! I loved the hot sauce on the side they gave me and I sprayed them all w/ a fresh lime and they were so damn fresh! from SCRATCH. It seems so impossible to get a res for this restaurant on a weekend. Thankfully, my friend and I were able book a res for a Friday morning during a recent staycation in Waikiki. I thought the pork adobo was a generous portion, and the roma tomatoes rounded out the dish well. The French toast was incredibly delicious. I thought the portion would be too much, but it was just right to be shared between us both. Recommended. And the shrimp and sausage grits? Let's just say my friend was very satisfied with his choice. SERVICE: Truly amazing. Very exceptional. Omgggg, first time trying here & it was soooooo good! We were in the area & the hubs chose this place to eat dinner. Located on the outside of south shore marketplace near the park. Inside was nice & clean, we came when it wasn't too busy so had lots of seating. Our waitress was nice (whole staff was nice) The fooood. Wow, I had no complaints on anything we ordered. I started off with a cup of the soup of the day which was this creamy mushroom soup & it was the best I've ever had, paired with a pc of garlic buttery bread for dipping. It was so good I even got a bowl to go! The apple pasta was amazing, you're probably thinking apple, blue cheese in a pasta? But it actually worked & it was so good paired with the braised pork belly. My other half ordered 2 things & he was glad he did bc the adobo loco moco was a little too small for him but he said it tasted great, adobo was more on the "sweeter" side for him but he still enjoyed it. We were very pleased about the experience here and while we clearly over ordered food for our table, including breakfast and lunch items, the leftovers were just as good as when it was fresh. Our reservation was for opening time so the space was clean and relatively empty when we arrived. The menu was divided into small plates, salads, and brunch items and we tried five small plates, a salad, and three brunch items. Crispy smashed potatoes - These were typical breakfast potatoes and there was a choice of cajun salt, salt and vinegar, or garlic rosemary seasoning. Deep fried deviled eggs - These were very unique and good, something none of us had had before. Popcorn chicken - This was just ok, the ratio of fried skin to chicken was off. Lilikoi bbq short ribs - The ribs had a good sweet glaze and the meat was well cooked. Not amazing, but good Grandma's fried pork chops - The chops were breaded well and the meat was juicy. South shore Cobb salad - This was a little odd with kale and I'm not sure this worked as well as we'd hoped. Brûlée'd french toast - The thick toast with a bruleed crust was topped with fresh fruit and coconut. This was a favorite of the table. Creole shrimp and sausage grits - This was the most flavorful dish we ordered. The grits were very well seasoned! Calentado - This was interesting. The combination of barbacoa, eggs, garlic rice, and chimichurri sounded very promising. The meat was tender and delicious but the dish needed more sauce to bring it together. Finally came after wanting to eat here for the past 2 years. Every time we would try and come it was a long wait or timing didn't work out. The ambiance is refreshing as the kitchen is an open concept within the restaurant and everything is prepared right there. Comfortable seating and loved the mason jar cups. We also really appreciated the music , that was a huge plus. Ordered the kale Cobb salad. I thought it tasted great however I think the kale should be thinly sliced. Kale is a very chewy vegetable and wasn't a huge fan of that. Also, the chicken in the salad was a bit chewy as well. But overall the plating and taste was there. Definitely feel that they need to have a kids menu. We ordered the two items that said kid friendly. One was the popcorn chicken which my kids really enjoyed. The bacon Mac and cheese was the other "kid menu" item even though I'm not sure why. It had way too much pepper and seasoning that our kids absolutely did not care for it. Taking a little bit of time to simply add a couple of menu items for kids would allow for them to sit longer and in return have the adults spend more money. Parents or caregivers would be able to enjoy themselves for a much needed dining out experience. If the adults enjoyed themselves due to the fact that the kids enjoyed themselves you would be building repeat customers. Got sat within 5 minutes. After we sat no one came to our table to take any kind of order for about 8-10 minutes and there were more than 5 or 6 waitstaff walking around. It was not busy as it was after the lunch rush. Had the steak bites, popcorn chicken, plum lilikoi margarita with li hing and an apple bacon hamburger and flat fries/potatoes with truffle. Love how convenient Ward is for lots of good eats close by! We originally wanted to go to Merriman's but they've changed their HH menu so we opted out and decided to come to Scratch instead - what a good choice! Although service was a bit slow, the food and drinks were fantastic. Unfortunately there was no happy hour here but they do have breakfast items available all day! We started off with lots of drinks and apps, our favorites are probably the pork ribs and the fried deviled eggs. The crispy potatoes and brussels sprouts are also great. Drinks are a little pricey but they taste so darn good that it's easy to have 3 and not even realize it! The guava kicker was probably the all around favorite at the table. Food was great, came out quickly and the portions were HUGE. You can probably share any entree on the menu with two people. The real star of the night was the bruleed french toast. The crunchy sweet topping over the soft bread was so perfect to end our meal. And the fresh fruits on top just made it so much better. Tip: get it a la mode and thank yourself later. I really wanted to enjoy this spot again but it's a huge no for me! Sat at the counter to watch the kitchen do their thing. The chef drops his towel he uses to hold pans, wipe his hands and wipe the prep table on the floor. He picks it up off the dirty floor and continues to use it. EWW‼ Next we watch the person at the pass reach in his pants with his cloves to adjust himself. He never took the gloves off and continued to plate food. We mentioned it to the waiter and she had the dish refired. The chef never changed his kitchen rag and by then we already had our food. We also had a visitor crawl across the table. We called for the waiter to remove it. She just mushed it in a napkin and apologized. No sanitation to the table at all. They offered us a $10 discount on the bill. We put our name down for 2 at 11 and waited an hour to be seated. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice and it's cool to see the chefs working and making your food. We ordered the pork adobo loco moco, milk and cereal pancakes, and their smash potatoes. Smash potatoes were a bit too salty for me, and I kept having to dip it in ketchup to balance the saltiness. The pork adobo loco moco was super tasty and a large portion. Milk and cereal pancakes were fluffy and came with 4 pancakes stacked on each other. It was good and the fruit toppings really balanced the sweetness. Overall it was a good experience and I want to come back for their dinner menu. I was left stuffed after brunch. My only complaint was that it felt like out waiter forgot about us halfway through our meal and I really wanted my water refilled. They have a free parking lot with the south shore market with plenty of stalls. Had I ate at Scratch early on in my trip, I would've made sure to visit one more time before returning home. Scratch Loco Moco -- You have your choice between pork adobo or their house chili. Decided to try their pork adobo and had no regrets whatsoever! The pork adobo was incredibly soft and flavorful, it practically fell apart as I broke the yolk and mixed everything together. The garlic rice was a great balance to the otherwise savory meat. This isn't your typical loco moco, where it is drowned in gravy. Instead, you get a light, translucent savory sauce drizzled over the rice and it is simply perfect. The ambiance is perfect for all your brunch outings with friends or your significant other. They have so many sweet and savory dishes to try. I'd say the only downside is that there can definitely be a wait since it's not the biggest location. I hadn't had french toast in years so it was a sweet treat! They give you three slices of thick, dense, sweet bread. All of the toppings provided added a nice delicious touch, especially the coconut with the brûlée. Service was good, we were in and out. The bacon was okay - the eggs were fine but the chive biscuit was completely cold - like it had not been completely thawed. I ordered the French Toast - which I never even received. After my husband had finished his breakfast, the waitress came around to say "a few more minutes." After I told her I did not ant it anymore, she then was "nice enough" to let us know it had been taken off the bill. Two coffees- billed as bottomless cup - we never received a refill. I came here purely because a friend of mine posted a photo of the Cereal and Milk pancakes and boy, was I glad I came. The place was super busy when we came at 10am on a Saturday morning (thank God people are finally starting to get back outside and eat at restaurants like civilized human beings again)--we waited an hour before we could get in. When it was finally our turn, the staff took their time seating us, which was a little annoying, but I cut them some slack given how busy it was. When we got to our table, our server took a little while to get to us, but once she did, things went pretty smoothly from there. The Cereal and Milk pancakes are probably the best item on the menu by far; followed closely by the Crispy Brussels. The plate comes with 4 hot pancakes, cooked to perfection with your choice of fruity pebbles or frosted flakes peppered on top of it. Of course I picked the fruity pebbles because....why not?? Lol The pancakes also come with a milky white icing that can be drizzled on top in place of syrup. It's not milk (but it looks like milk) which makes this dish all the more creative. I could only finish about 1/4th of it in one sitting and had the eat the rest at home. I was considering either the Grandma's Fried Pork Chop pasta or the Coder Pork and Apple Pasta. Our server recommended the fried pork chop pasta when I asked his opinion but then I said well what's your favorite? He recommended the Calentado, so I went with it, and my companion got the catch of the day. We got the fried deviled eggs for a starter- those are life changing, you need to try them!! When the calentado arrived, I took a bite and stopped in my tracks. The flavors exploded in my mouth- tender meat, chimichurri, garlic rice. Oh my!! I was just so happy. When our server returned, I thanked him and said I was so glad to have taken his advice! I am so sorry friend that I've forgotten your name, but he said he was pretty new working their and the chef teased him whenever someone ordered the calentado, it was because of him. We came to eat here for brunch with a few coworkers, and needless to say, this place never disappoints! I would caution that they can get pretty busy, especially on the weekends for brunch... so I highly recommend making a reservation. We were lucky to be taken in as a walk in, but that was primarily due to the fact that it was also a Monday. Upon entering, you're greeted with a large amount of tables, and the open kitchen (you can actually see people prepare food). The place is rather spacious, and very clean. Our server was very friendly and gave us recommendations since we didn't know what to order. I like how they were very attentive to each customer and were quick to respond if we needed anything. Their chicken and waffles was so delicious, but also huge. I had to take the food back to our hotel for leftovers. They also have some good drinks whether it be alcoholic or non alcoholic. Hard 5 stars!!! The food was just that good! It was bussin!!!!! Thank you Chef!!! We were here for Valentine's Day Brunch with no reservations and were seated right away. We ordered the following appetizers: 1. Escargot - What menu do you see in HI with escargot as an appetizer for brunch???? I though they were just braggin on the menu, but when it came out we had a hard time sharing. Super buttery, garlicky, goodness! 2. " Steak Bites" - I put quotes because this was a whole ass steak!!! They were not "bites". Typically, restaurant provide you with small chunks of cut up steak as an appetizer. Scratch one ups everyone and provides you with a whole NY strip that they cut up and call "bites". This could have been a whole meal on its own if you added eggs on the side or something. The Food: 1. Creme Brulee French Toast - the kid ordered and killed all three toasts because it was that good. You can literally scrape at the top of the toast and hear the caramelized sugar on top. Surprisingly not too sweet, but just right! 2. Adobo Loco Moco- anytime there is a Filipino inspired dish we have to try it. The hubs thought it was mid. The Adobo was too sweet for him. He was looking for more of a savory vinegar profile. 3. Shrimp and Grits - It was topped with an egg and had the absolute best flavor. The shrimp comes out whole with the head on. I personally love it that way because you get all the flavor. The vibe: The music was good that I was swaying to the beat as I happily ate my food. Went here as an early birthday brunch with my best friend. The ambiance was nice, cute and open. My favorite was the deviled eggs and the pork chops -- not the pasta. The pasta lacked sauce and salt. But the pork chop had so much flavor, it was crunchy on the out side and juicy on the inside. I did ask my waiter for extra sauce on the side for the pasta but it still lacked so much flavor. Next time I'd just order the pork chop on the side. The deviled eggs were amazing, nice textures and flavors. Spice from jalapeños, crunch from being fried, ranch drizzled, and pickled onion made it taste refreshing. Smashes potatoes as good as it sounded need more salt. We got the rosemary flavor. My drink was good as well. Not pictured I did try the gandule rice, it was a little too dry for my liking and not as flavorful as other gandule rice I've had before. But it was still better than their pasta. I ate my pork with the rice instead of the pasta. I tried a piece of my friends pork belly, that was also delicious. Overall, I'd come back to eat the food I did like and order different things to try! read more
