Everyone's reviews of The Scrambled really show how this little cafe lives up to the hype, but I think I'm going to present the single most important facet of this place that truly makes it the best breakfast place in the region, if not Indiana: It is a non-Greek restaurant. Now, the owners and cooks could be Greek for all I know; that's not what I meant. This isn't the type of diner that is the equivalent to EVERY SINGLE breakfast joint in the area. For lack of a better term, The Scrambled doesn't prepare the exact same food and menu that The Commander, Round the Clock, Sophia's, The Wheel, Johnel's, WHEREVER have. You're not going to find any Sysco food service stuff here. I think it was Steve Dolinsky who described this place as "beyond the predictable" and that's exactly what it is. You'll find some ordinary menu items that cater to the NWI people that don't like to stray from their Greek restaurant norm, but you'll also find the type of dishes that place this cafe in with the trendier restaurants that Chicago elitists pursue. (The Scrambled can give Yolk a run for its money any day of the week.) They use fresh, local ingredients and pretty much everything (if not everything) is homemade---right down to the fresh preserves and foccacia. My orchard omelet, made with fresh apple butter, ham, and cheddar cheese was served with three heavy strips of thick bacon, a deliciously unique nest of angel hair-thin hash browns and thick toast with fresh preserves. Priced at $8, I thought it was a little steep until the food came out. The portions could easily feed two people, but the taste and homemade quality of the food are worth more than the price. If this restaurant reserved a little spot on north Halsted in Chicago, they would easily be able to price their plates at $15 a pop. It's a VERY small restaurant--sort of a thorn in their side--because it's packed ALL of the time and I think they could have a hugely successful business if they expanded into the vacant properties next to them in the strip mall. But that's not really their fault. They're new and I have a feeling that with their success already, they'll be expanding soon. I gave this review one less star because of their decision to go cash only. I know that they're trying to save money and some portion of their sales go to a charity or something, but this is the one mistake that business owners everywhere make. They think they're saving money on credit card fees, but think about all of the business they're LOSING by not accepting them. If I was able to use my credit card the day I went, I know that for a fact, I would have bought a sandwich to go. I have a hunch that in the future, they'll start accepting credit cards. Plus, they have an ATM in there, so it's not like you'll ever be strapped for cash. But the moment their business opens up to credit cards, this review will be upped one star. read more

Not sure where to begin, from the fact that the wait was way long. 3 people, 30+ minutes wait time, at least there was free coffee... to reiterate a previous reviewer "coffee was bad" I was not a fan of it either. We finally get seated and get ready to order. As we wait I look around and; I don't think there were more than ohhh 9 or 10 tables, most of which were for 2. That's one reason the wait took so long I guess. The dining room felt crowded, I mean there was room but, with a small area it seemed a lot more cramped than it probably was. On to the meal, got coffee... still not a fan. I wanted biscuits n gravy, they had no biscuits... I ordered "The Garbage" skillet and a side order of cinnamon rolls, they had no cinnamon rolls... one person got "Uncle Ray's" omelette the other I was with got an omelette as well(peppers, onions, goat cheese and mushrooms). So here we are, waiting... again... another 20 minutes gone, math time- 30+mins + 20mins = 50+ minutes . Damn, Chicago steakhouses are faster, even WITHOUT a reservation. OK OK, maybe I was just hungry n didn't like waiting and needed to vent but, that was too long. Food comes out, looks great! Large serving size too. I started with toast and Apple butter, really tasty. Dug into "The Garbage" . In general it was OK at best. The scrambled eggs on top were like any scrambled eggs you can get anywhere, scrambled. Chili was lacking seasoning it was pretty bland, salt helped though, two shakes of it. The "burger patty"... it was cooked ground beef again, needed seasoning. Apparently there was hashed potatoes in there somewhere, I didn't see em, maybe they got mixed in the chili or something. I tried a bite of the omelettes, both were pretty good. Goat cheese was especially tasty. Veggies were cooked well with just enough crunch left. All in all though I'd probably go back, at least to see if the wait is shorter and the coffee better. read more

Being the LA girl that I am, being in Indiana was rough on my Vegan tendencies. Phew. Been then we found Scrambled Diner! Healthy options! (and not so healthy ones...) They were able to apply my request to not use butter or oil in my dish without an attitude. Made mama very happy. The owners are in there, day in and day out... and you can tell that truly care about the customer. Huge portions! Always took stuff to go. The weekends get pretty hectic, but if you can snag a table, you will be set. read more

Hello FOOD SNOB here. Nice change from your regular breakfast joints. This place is for real. I had the Healthy Skillet, one of many on the menu. Everything was fresh, spinach, real sauteed mushrooms not canned. With 2 eggs on top of Great Hash Brown Potatoes. My wife had the Irish Skillet with Sauerkraut and real Corn Beef again not canned. I,m not a big Pancake eater but my daughters was fluffy and tasty. Good size portions too. This is a Neat Little place to go for Breakfast or Lunch. Will have to try the latter next time. If there was something to complain about it would have to be the price of coffee at $2.25, but it sure was good and hit the spot. read more

The more I come here, the more I love it. I've now established that my favorite thing on the planet is their blueberry maple French toast. I don't really go in for sweet breakfasts, but I ordered this on my birthday and it was the best ever. French toast, covered in fresh blueberries, topped by homemade whipping cream and the maple syrup on the side so you can drench (or not) to your heart's content. At first I wasn't so sure about this blueberries and maple syrup thing, but you should just dive in because it's great. I also like their breakfast wraps. The veggie one is really good, but I always run out of salsa before I run out of wrap (so be sure to ask for extra). The orchard wrap sounded odd to me at first (cheddar, ham, and apple butter?) but it really is a great combination. The biscuits and gravy are not at all like I was expecting, but they're even better than your usual biscuits and gravy. The gravy is more like a cheesy, spicy, creamy gravy with (I think) turkey sausage. It's really delicious. But I still think the thing that makes this place is the hashbrowns. They do the basics so wonderfully. So butterfully. So crispily. read more

Would love to give 5 Stars but a couple of things stood out. Pro: They make their own Breakfast sausage, ketchup and jams. We had their skillets for breakfast, which they were amazing! Server was very nice and attentive. Great price paid, and nice size servings. Con: Went for breakfast on Sunday morning (at 945). Finally got seated at 1020am. Seems like this is the norm here. Wait for food was long. People who came in after us, received theirs orders before ours. We had 3 people in our party, and the other guests had 4 or more. The Scrambled is a true treat for Region foodies. Cage-free, local eggs; untypical breakfast creations; and homemade EVERYTHING, from cinnamon rolls to the jams and ketchup to the sausage and corned beef and chorizo. All of this without any yuppiness, which would be a big turnoff considering the area. The portions are hearty, the coffee is strong and above average quality, the service couldn't be much better. As long as you remember to bring cash (or not - there's an atm inside), and don't mind an inevitable wait, you'll be in for the best breakfast experience in NWI. On my most recent visit I had the French Toast Club: french toast stacked with eggs your style, sugar hickory bacon, and your style cheese - asiago in my case. It was great. The cinnamon rolls are truly unbelievable. The Monkey Pancakes, the most indulgent thing on the menu, are to be marveled at. I was wavering between 4 and 5 stars for The Scrambled, because while it is undoubtedly the best breakfast place in the Region, it's not quite perfect. Disagree if you will, but I believe there's a line when it comes to portion sizes - sometimes they are just too large. Scrambled Diner is right on the border of this line... I went here with a large group and after everyone had eaten themselves sick, it made me nauseous to stare at all the half eaten, sauce-drenched food still sitting on the table. At least, as another reviewer pointed out, it's not all Sysco food service crap - it's actually a much higher quality, which is somewhat a redeeming quality. My wife and I ordered the Healthy Skillet, and asked if cheese could be added. The waitress was very friendly and explained any item could be made any way we choose. The food was excellent, roasted tomatoes really made the Healthy Skillet. This is a very nice upscale breakfast restaurant. At first I was disappointed they only accept cash, but after discovering a percentage of all their sales is donated to cancer research, I am more than happy to bring cash. The employees wear nice looking t-shirts, and I like the black hats the cooks wear. Everything was very clean and organized, the atmosphere is relaxed and soothing. The owners, and all help is very friendly and attentive. Very quaint decor with the owners cute kids framed throughout the dining room. The Dyer area really needed a nice breakfast restaurant, they have my business. read more

I almost wonder if these blissful reviews are written by those who simply love the idea everything here is homemade - but are not reviewing the food based on it's merits. I've tried The Scrambled Diner - for breakfast - a few times and find it utterly mediocre. This does not take into account the viciously long wait time because it is not their fault. The Veggie Scram skilled I had most recently was utterly floating in a quarter-inch of water which made it most unappetizing. The hash browns are crispy on the exterior, but are mushy in the middle which resonates a mashed potato experience. Now add this already mushy potato mix to a plate of water and well - you get the mental picture. They also pride themselves on their homemade sausage. I tried the turkey sausage and it resembled fried patties of ground turkey w/ some spices thrown in. Which is exactly how it tasted. Extraordinary in the sense of uniqueness, but just not very good - at all. A "try 2 bites" and leave the rest on the plate experience. On a positive note the bread and homemade jam was delicious. This was the standout of the meal. Bread and jam. Not enough to send the teeter totter in the "wow - this is a great place for breakfast" direction. With so many breakfast choices in the area I can see the "feel good" appeal a restaurant such as The Scrambled Diner caters to. Just about everything is homemade! I agree with others that the food is great but trying to get a table is too hard. I've driven by more times than I've gone in due to the long wait and I'm talking about the weekdays not weekends. It is very small. With all their customers it is surprising that they could not expand or at least turn part of the waiting area into tables. read more

This place is by far the very best breakfast place my wife and I have ever eaten at. They make their own churizo and the churizo skillet is top notch! The french toast club was also amazing!! My wife summed it up best saying, "I'm so full and that's so sad because this makes me want to eat and eat!" The service was top notch, and the concept is flawlessly executed. To anybody crossing the Illinois/Indiana border near Chicago, this is an absolute must experience! I am from San Diego, but friends and family are out here in the midwest, so we come usually around the holidays to visit. One of our friends took us to this little spot. Now, whenever I'm in the area, I will make the effort to come to this diner. I have only tried their breakfasts, but it's because it's so good, why order anything else? The portions are huge, and the prices are low. The bacon is thick, the scrambled eggs are fluffy, and the hash browns are so crispy! The servers are all friendly, and my coffee cup was never empty. This place is a million times better than your usual IHOP or Denny's. There is a parking lot with plenty of space, but the restaurant itself is a bit small, so if you come at peak hours, and especially on a weekend, the wait can be kind of long, but it is worth it! Please come out to San Diego! But until then, little sunshine-all-year-round me will brave negative-degree weather to eat your giant omelettes! read more

Okay, I gotta write a review for this place: While small (they're bursting at the seams) and often have long waiting periods, they are well worth it! They have a one-sided menu which turned me off at first...until I got my food. Holy sweet manna from heaven, this place makes my happiness ticker swell to heights I'd never known possible! TRY THE MONKEY CAKES AT LEAST ONCE!!! Fluffy pancakes topped with banana slices, real, thick bacon, peanut butter sauce, chocolate syrup, and sides of their house-made butter and syrup. The English muffins are WAY better than Thomas brand, and they serve them with house-made butter and raspberry spread which is too thick to be syrup but too thin to be jam. Bursting with flavor and seeds, this stuff rocks my socks! Oh, and don't get me started on the skillets! Just...don't... Suffice to say they are, like, I can't find the words for how good they are. Way too much food, so you will have some for later! Then when all is said and done, you look up from your sleepy, food-induced coma to see above the breakfast bar a giant blackboard sign with daily specials and you think, "Why, oh why, why didn't I get one of thooooose??!" I've as yet never remembered to order any of the specials. Scrambled should get Four Stars for the wait and small establishment lending for a slightly crowded feel, but the food begs to differ and will eliminate and grudge you have at having waited to be seated. read more

This is a great breakfast addition to NWI and we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast. The owner was very friendly, the decor nice and the food great... they had me at Goat Cheese :) The only complaint we had was the service is a little slow for breakfast.... we had our two small children and usually breakfast food turn around is very quick, so it was a tad difficult keeping our kids entertained for the longer than normal weight for our food. Amazing food. Simple, fresh, wonderfully prepared. I had the Tangled Up In Blue omelette and it was so good. The spinach is fresh and not overcooked, and it blends so well with the bleu cheese and the incredible bacon. It comes with some of the best hashbrowns I've ever had -- I ordered those extra crispy and I was not disappointed. I had the sausage patty as the side item since bacon was in the omelette -- it was tasty though a bit on the dry side. read more

Despite it being a busy Sunday afternoon we were seated almost immediately and greeted buy our waitress as soon as we were seated. She asked if we wanted coffee and came back shortly thereafter to tell us about the specials. Our food came quickly and the portions were enormous. Thankfully this was NOT a case of quantity over quality. Omeletes were fantastic, house-made apple butter and turkey sausage and house-cured bacon all were delicious. Hash-browns perfect. House-made hot sauce! Can wait to go back. Totally exceeded my expectations. A real island of awesome in a sea of mediocrity that is the culinary scene of NWI. read more

I have now worked my way through the entire menu (sans the Orchard Omelet and the pancakes and french toast) and gotta say all is good. The chef is always willing to make an omelet as a skillet. The bruschetta omelet as a skillet was incredible. I do love the garbage skillet - yes, chili for breakfast is awesome. The ONLY complaint I have is that even though they charge you for an omelet, if they make it as a skillet you don't get meat and toast. My breakfast with tip usually comes to $15 - pricey. BUT! I checked out this place with my grandmother on an early Sunday afternoon. Overall, a good experience! The great majority of the food was excellent. I had the Uncle Ray's omelet which was 3 egg whites folded over a veritable mountain of fresh veggies, including mushrooms, spinach and tomatoes. Wheat toast is great and substantial, with rolled oats on the crust--I also really liked that they don't automatically butter the toast, but bring it in a ramekin on the side. I had a choice yesterday of apple, strawberry or raspberry jam. My grandma had the Dyer Beef, which arrived with a mountain of sliced beef covered in yellow cheese, and a lemon rice soup, which she enjoyed. The house-made hot sauce was really tasty! One downside of the food for me were the hashbrowns, which were nice and crispy on the outside but shredded so finely inside that they basically disintegrated in my mouth. They were a little too mushy for me. Overall ambience was nice and cozy, but what is knocking off a star is the service. It wasn't terrible, just a little... off. Since it was near closing time people were coming in and out of the kitchen with dirty garbage cans and the like. I was never sure who exactly was our server as at least three different people attended us, none of whom offered us a refill on our coffee. Additionally, less than a minute after our food came out--as I was still cutting my grandma's sandwich in half--another server came out and asked how the food was, even though she could see that neither of us had even had the chance to try it yet! Slightly awkward. However, none of that is enough to keep us from going again to support a small local business. If you're looking to beat the crowds, we arrived at about 2:00pm and were seated right away, though the dining room was still pretty full. read more

We enjoyed eggs, French toast and odd hamburger textured sausage patties. The eggs also embody an unusual texture - scrambled, they have a "Mcmuffin" feel. The favorite was the French toast. It seems the luster have dulled slightly. The past visits have been disappointing. I know eggs are very difficult to prepare. It is extremely difficult when preparing in a fast paced environment. My In Laws have been talking about this breakfast spot for quite some time and so I was really thrilled while spending the night in Munster, that we'd get the chance to experience it for ourselves. I live in Chicago, and experience delicious, fresh food all of the time, especially trendy new brunch spots. I have to be honest, this is the best, breakfast I have had in a long time. I order the Ray's omelet, my husband got the corned beef hash (best I have EVER had). The jam, to the veggies and even the ketchup was all fresh, homemade and cooked to perfection. We were seated at the "counter" which turned out to be a tiny back counter facing the kitchen, the same counter the food came out on and right next to the beverage machines. Very good food. Everything is homemade and fresh right down to the ketchup! My husband and I both had a skillet and shared pancakes. I'm normally not a pancake person but ate them all cause they were so good! Only problem I had with The Scrambled Diner was the fact it took so long to receive our food after we ordered (about 45 minutes). I would normally consider this unacceptable for a breakfast place but the food was so good I would definitely return as long as time is not an issue! read more

Wow wow wow Felt like in some fancy downtown organic non gmo all natural place !!!!!
