    My breakfast utensils

Scotty's in Wallingford was interesting. Cute little downtown, local dive vibe. We went in with great expectations. My go to breakfast when I go to any new place (to me) is to always try the eggs Benedict. Their Scotties Benny had an interesting spin on the original. It had some cheese in it which I was happy to try. It also came with home fries, which were delicious. I have had better eggs Benedict then this, I don't think it needed the cheese, and the sauce on it was not very fresh. My friend got a muffin and an egg sandwich, where there was more roll than egg. Also the butter he was offered to put on the muffin, was something other than butter. One of the more interesting things about Scotty's, was we were served our breakfast on paper plates, we had plastic utensils, and that was a huge turn off for me. Our waitress was excellent, so no beef there. I guess my last gripe would be that when we checked in to Scotty's a 10% off coupon popped up, which happens occasionally being a Yelp elite. The waitress assured us that the manager would help us with the 10% off so when the time came we showed her the coupon. The manager questioned us saying it must be for another restaurant, there is a Scotty's in Branford she said. And then when we prove to her that we were at the right Scotty's, it seemed as though we were truly inconveniencing her. Needless to say, I will not recommend Scotty's to anyone, nor will I return.

Decided to give the new Scotty's in town a try. I was a long time customer and fan of this restaurant when they were on Broadway in North Haven. Sadly, when they opened in the new location on Washington Ave, it was not the same and somewhat disappointing, so I stopped eating there. But, I'm happy to report that our breakfast in Wallingford was excellent! For a Saturday morning around 8:30, it was surprisingly empty inside as I had anticipated a long wait. Considering they've only been open 1 week it's possible folks haven't had a chance yet to stop by. We were seated right away and within minutes had fresh, hot coffee. The service was great and Scotty has regained his "Omelet King" status with me! The omelet was huge and stuffed with veggies and cheese. The apple pancakes that I grew to love years ago were good, although just a tad too much cinnamon which was a little overpowering. The super breakfast with 2 of everything, including eggs, meat, toast, home fries and your choice of pancakes or French toast is a big breakfast and well worth the price. Daily specials are posted on a board. The prices are extremely reasonable for the portion and quality you get compared to other breakfast restaurants in the area. Even the eggs appeared to be jumbo and not the tiny pigeon eggs some breakfast places use. By the time we left, the place was filling up with people, plus the farmers market across the street may have contributed to that. The owners wife came by to check on everything to ensure we were pleased which is a nice touch. The place is small but quaint. If you're local to Wallingford I would encourage you to support them in their new location and get there before the masses find out and you'll have to wait in lines to be seated.

A small Hole in the wall with great food and great service. I was pleasantly surprised and if I lived locally I'd definitely be a regular!

Good typical diner food. Waitresses were super frazzled about there being maybe 15 people in there.

Our server was knowledgeable of gluten free options on the menu, which was great. They start every table with potato chips and a yummy aioli, truly addicting! The couple had been foraging herbs and vegetables together for years. Bars shut down everywhere during the COVID-19 pandemic, so the Gliddens decided to craft their own homemade cocktails with some of their herbs and flowers. They also began to infuse the herbs into different spirits and syrups. Eventually the Gliddens decided to open their own bar and chose the name "Bones & Botanicals" in reference to the spooky witch theme as well as the fact that they use botanicals in their drinks. The menu consists of craft cocktails, craft mocktails, herbal teas, local craft beer & cider, and light food options. Everything on the menu is made from locally-sourced ingredients. In addition to year-round offerings, the menu features new seasonal specials each month. The Gliddens opened a second speakeasy, The Gilded Curtain, down the street in August 2024. I recently visited Bones & Botanicals for the first time. I've been meaning to visit for a while, and I made a point to visit for the beginning of the Halloween season. You need a secret 4-digit passcode to get inside, which is updated weekly and posted on their social media accounts. I totally loved the vibe of the place with all of the witch decor (very reminiscent of "Hocus Pocus" or the "Harry Potter" franchise). There's lots of shelves filled with all sorts of books, broomsticks, crystals, and jars filled with herbs. I even loved all of the smells. The place is small and was a little crowded when I first arrived, but it soon cleared out and I was able to grab a seat. I was excited to try some of the October menu specials, which included the "Pumpkin King's Old Fashion" (bourbon, housemade pumpkin & maple syrup, angostura & chocolate bitters), "The Blood Moon" (mocktail: pomegranate, cranberry, housemade rosemary syrup, lime, club soda, balsamic vinegar) and the "Basic Witch" (vodka, housemade pumpkin creamer, coffee liqueur, whipped cream & sprinkles). I really liked how it doesn't matter if you don't drink alcohol. At Bones & Botanicals, there's something for everyone. The mocktails were just as exciting as the cocktails. Before leaving, I had to get one their most popular year-round offerings: the "Smoked Thyme Infused Old Fashion" (bourbon, thyme syrup, angostura bitters). I watched the bartenders make this cocktail at least five times during my visit and it was an entertaining performance each time (complete with a skull cocktail smoker and a big puff of smoke). It also happened to taste amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Bones & Botanicals and highly recommend a visit during the Halloween season (or any other season for that matter).

On this occasion we just got coffees. I got the Reese's Mocha. Others got hot chocolate. This mocha was pricey at over $8.00. When I made my order I told the barista I wanted it for "here". It took around 20 minutes for the coffee to be ready. I was let down that it arrived in a generic to go cup. This place is so elegant and it ruins the vibe a bit that they don't offer ceramic cups. The Reese's Mocha tasted just like biting into a Reese's Cup. It smelled like peanut butter and chocolate and tasted just like it too. This is a cup of cozy! I would love to get avocado toast next time.
