I hired Scottie's Workshop to restore my 1967 BMW R60/2 with Steib sidecar. The project took roughly 20 months and cost about $33,000. Scottie quoted ~12 months for the work initially. The contract signed states the bike will 'ride and function perfectly' when finished. Within 37 miles of getting the bike back, the front brake completely failed when the adjustment nut came off, the sidecar mounting hardware began gouging the sidecar body, and the bike developed multiple oil leaks/seepage concerns. What concerned me most was Scottie's response to the brake failure. He acknowledged in writing that the original BMW brake design has a known characteristic where, if the cable becomes too loose, the adjustment nut can rattle off. Photos from when the bike arrived at his shop also show additional brake hardware that was no longer present after restoration. He used no loctite to secure the bolt he knew was dangerous. His explanation was that his goal is to return bikes to factory-original configuration and remove non-original or "superfluous" parts. He oddly has no problems putting on other non-stock parts (vape ignitions, brake pads, etc.) I understand that a 60-year-old motorcycle requires maintenance and may have quirks. But a complete front-brake failure and new sidecar body damage within 37 miles after a $33,000 restoration are not what I expected. Scottie also stated in writing that his shop offers no warranty and that with antique vehicles "there is no expectation of longevity or safety." After I said I planned to obtain an independent inspection and repair estimate, he terminated the relationship and said the shop would provide no further assistance. Based on my experience, I would not use Scottie's Workshop again. Do not hire this man. As you'll see in other reviews, Scottie is condescending to customers who have problems with his work. He implied that I was not mechanically-able even though it is his mechanic work that immediately failed. Called his other customer a 'penny pinching crybaby'. Scottie, you are a dishonest person. visited Scotty's workshop recently and oh my what an outstanding machine shop, restoration specialist, spent a couple hours with my brother touring the facility, looking at all the outrageously beautiful restorations that Scotty has completed . My brother owns 4 vintage, two of them with side hacks. scotty spent the time to explain all of the facilities, and the BMWs that he has for sale, and that are restorations. It was like going to a BMW museum. What a treat. read more

I'll never go back there. Scottie, who knows my bike as he worked on for the previous owner, sold me a used fairing without hardware. At home, when trying to position it so the missing fittings could be made up it became obvious that this fairing was the wrong size and could not be fitted to this bike. Contacted Scottie to return it and he refused citing his policy of "no returns on used parts". If he won't make an exception when he provided the wrong used part I'll not do business with him again. Especially as some of the work he did for the previous owner was incomplete (horn wasn't connected) and one wire was left out if the sheath and was flapping free in the breeze. read more

After searching and searching for a place to get my 1978 R80 worked on, I came across Scottie. BMW of San Jose recomended them since they no longer want to work on airheads. After trying another shop in Scotts valley who cost me hundreds of dollars and gave me back my bike exactly in the same condition.. they told me to pull my heads and bring them in.. I am no mechanic, so this level of service was really bad. And was never actually the problem... Within two hours scottie had my bike running better than it ever had before. All I needed was a tune up. I write this review 400 miles from home and very confident in the work Scottie and his team has done. They not only do good work, but are very very nice and passionate about these bikes. Working with Scotties team is a must... don't bother with anyone else. Scottie concentrates on 1948-1969 BMW's though he is expanding to include later years. He and his workers know these bikes better than just about anyone on earth. Not cheap, but he can complete work in a fraction of the time taken by others so don't let the rates scare you. He can do a 100 point restoration if you are so inclined or he can get your bike back on the road and dependable but not "restored" He is very busy and if you want to remove the transmission and hand it to him for restoration (rather than paying him to remove and reinstall it), no problem Need a tool for a couple of minutes. Probably not a problem. Advice is freely given and if you want to do a job yourself and lack confidence, don't worry, Scotty will give you as little or as much help as you need. I have had him fully restore three bikes for me and I'm pleased with the work done. read more

Scottie runs a tight shop, he coaches his mechanics to follow the book to assure your vintage BMW looks and runs its best, no shortcuts, his work will last so you can ride it with confidence. What I really appreciate about Scottie is that he is always happy to chat to provide advise. Drove down to Scottie's from Redwood City. When I arrived, I explained how was in the market for a 1970's airhead, that I had never owned a BMW, and how I needed a shop to help with the service of it. Awesome Scottie took time out of his busy day, welcomed me, and showed me some bikes(many of which were his customers bikes) which may suit my interests, and discussed some options to help with my commuting needs. He also took my contact info and offered to let me know if he comes across something that may be an interest to me. Very laid back, friendly, blue-collar atmosphere. It's Hard to find old-school, personalized service like this anymore. I look forward to the day I bring my BMW Motorrad to Scottie's Workshop. read more
