Car doctor *The short story: I highly recommend David at the Car Doctor. I blew my bearings on my trailer axle on a Friday night before a holiday weekend. David went above and beyond to take care of a total stranger. I don't live in the area so I wouldn't be a repeat customer. He simply spent time out of his personal life on a holiday weekend so that my wife and kids could enjoy some time out on the lake the next day. ***The long story*** It's 4:30 Friday afternoon of Memorial Day Weekend and the bearings on my boat trailer axle busted as I'm heading to New Melones Lake. I call a few places in a panic and end up talking to David (the owner) at the Car Doctor in Murphys. They close at 5 and I'm 20 minutes away. David tells me to bring my trailer in and he'll see what he can do. I show up as the shop is closing. He's already helping another customer who's also in a jam on the holiday weekend and he tells me to detach my trailer while he's finishing up with the other customer. David looks at my axle, tells me he'll be right back and comes back a few minutes later in his mechanics clothes. David went above and beyond to take care of a total stranger. I don't live in the area so I wouldn't be a repeat customer. He simply spent time out of his personal life on a holiday weekend so that my wife and kids could enjoy some time out on the lake the next day. Not only did he fix my bearing and clean up my axle, he inspected my trailer and tires. He found a loose bolt in my trailer and noticed my tires were way under inflated. David recommended that I take the boat and trailer back to the dealer for further inspection. We made it safely back to the Bay Area two days later thanks to David. The guys spent days trying to track down the clunk, which they eventually found involved some aftermarket suspension parts another shop had installed on the car. After a long road trip, I discovered that I had a pretty bad oil leak. I didn't have the tools or resources to locate the issue myself. The Car Doctor was the only shop that was willing to take my car in the same day and even worked around my schedule to get it in. David was extremely helpful and kind. We are on vacation from out of town and the cover to the under carriage of our car fell part way off, dragging on the ground. We had a 7 hour drive ahead of us the next day and wasn't sure if we'd find a place in time before we leave. I called 5 min to close in hopes I could set up a time the next day to Have it looked at. He's said go ahead and come right then. Long story short, he stayed almost an hour after close and worked hard to fix it. He even gave my two young daughters a Popsicle out of the kindness of his heart. When we asked how much we owe, he said only a few bucks for supplies. David went above and beyond. I ran over a rock and had a terrible noise and grinding under my car while visiting in Murphys. I made it to The Car Doctor. John was professional and reassuring. Do not take your car to this establishment. They took $500 from my son and gave him multiple diagnosis'. They we're unsure what the issue was. After having his car for three weeks we are literally no closer to a proper diagnosis. The only thing this place is decent for is an oil change. For $500 we should have had our car fixed Or at least a proper diagnosis. I will never go here again! Wait until Greg is available and Avery or Mike Nash is available in Angels Camp. This place is not worth your time or your money. read more

Our 1989 VW Vanagon broke down in the Calaverous Big Trees Park, so we had it towed to The Car Doctor in Murphys. David LeBoutillier, the owner, was pressed with a lot of back-logged business, but he gave our van priority, quickly disgnosed it, ordered the new part(s), and installed them, all at a very fair price. It would have been easy for a mechanic running a Shark Tank to gough us but he did not. David runs an honest, fair, and very good car mechanic shop. I highly recommend him. read more

I took my Prius in to have the oil changed. Less than a mile away the car completely shut down. It was after hours on a Friday so we pushed the car off the highway and managed to get home with another vehicle. Saturday we had it towed to the Car Doctor. On Monday it was determined that the oil was overfilled and some sensor or another shut the car's computer down. The Car Doctor offered many excuses as to how the oil overfill occurred and tried for 2 days to get the car running with no success. On Wednesday he called and suggested it be taken to Modesto Toyota, so we had it towed on our AAA card as was the first tow. Modesto Toyota had to reboot the car's computer with Toyota factory equipment. The Car Doctor paid the bill at Toyota. But what really ticked me off was that we had to get our other car, drive 50+ miles (one way) to pick up the Prius. I think the Car Doctor was responsible to return our car to us as it was his error which caused the failure. He also got 2 free tows at AAA expense. I've known John at the Car Doctor for many years and he has done a lot of work for us. (We have 5 vehicles with our business and 3 trailers). I suggested we trade some work needed on my F350 in exchange for the towing, our inconvenience, expenses and our day shot retrieving the Prius. He never responded. So I won't be going back to the Car Doctor and I wouldn't go there if I were you. read more

My daughter took her car there to get a smog certificate, we had a certificate that just expired (to get the car in our name). They said the car did not pass smog because of timing & charged an additional $80 to time the car. I then called and asked what was up. The guy did not want to talk about the car and would not go into detail. Cars do not just jump time and still run fine. This place is the worst. I've taken 3 vehicles to them. One barely made it home after they had it for a week. Had to call them and get one of their guys to look at it while I was broken down, after my insistence. It ended up having to be towed back from there and they finally discovered it was a minor repair that they'd overlooked. Another car I took in because my Check Engine light came on. $80 later, it was fixed, but back on the very next morning. Third was a vehicle they said would not pass smog & said it would cost some insane amount to "go through it" for that. Amazing that I was able to take it elsewhere and have it done with no problems. Recently a friend of mine took (for the very last chance for them) another vehicle. They wanted to charge almost double for repairs I've had done at a DEALERSHIP, for a similar vehicle from same auto manufacturer. How can they get away with charging that much more than dealership prices? Neighbor's son worked there for awhile. He got disgusted and quit. They held used air & oil filters they kept on a back shelf. When customers came in, they'd make this young man grab one of these dirty filters from the shelf & show it to the customer, making it appear this was the actual filter they'd changed out. They had not done anything. Shame on them! I never EVER recommend them to anyone...ever. Don't walk....RUN away from this place. read more
