In celebration of National Ice Cream Day, I am writing about Scoops Ice Cream Parlor which is all about its dairy-free ice cream AND its vegan Caribbean-style comfort food. If it's available, get the calaloo, my favorite. Get it on a bed of rice and peas or on black rice, with a side of black-eyed peas or lentils. When the calaloo is not available, I've gotten the stewed fish steak. Every single dish I've had has been so good, like "dang, that was a really good meal" level satisfying. Took me a while to realize Scoops was more than an ice cream shop and now that I know, it's become a neighborhood spot. I promise I'll actually get their ice cream one of these days. read more

Very cute place. We went there specifically for their ice cream. Food looks good also but we had lunch already. We love their tofuttis. Grapenut, and peanut butter was so so good. The pistachio was ok. We didn't know how the flavor was. I couldn't describe it but its so strong. I would give it 5 stars if service was a bit better. They do not acknowledge you as customers. A man just stared at me when I was there. I was puzzled on what he wanted from me. I asked him which ones of the ice cream are dairy free. I needed to make sure cause my husband is latose. He answered back in a whisper tone. " they all are" and that stare.. I had to ask him to repeat himself three time. Not to mention he also had an accent. I didn't get any of their vegan entrees which might be their best offerings but what I did get was their ice cream and a chickpeas patty . The price of the ice cream was ridiculous in hindsight at a hefty 8 dollars for a tiny container . The ice cream wasn't even homemade but rather outsourced . To top it off, they had no ethnic flavors to choose from which is primarily why I wanted to try this spot. Nonetheless, I settled with an ice cream called, "Great Nut". According to the server , it was supposed to be a vanilla base with some pieces of the, "great nuts " Needless to say , it was anything but great, hence the rating . You're way better off getting ,Oatly ice cream or one of those other vegan brands at a grocery store . Easily one of the worst ice creams I've had . The chickpea patty was much better though. It was curried chickpeas and I felt like I was eating something healthy which is unlike most of the other Pattie's I've had . I don't know if I'd revisit this restaurant . Ok, I know my photo doesn't look like much, but let me tell you that this is one of the best things I've ever eaten. It's linguine with a hefty scoop of eggplant sauce on top. It's one of those dishes that I could actually eat multiple times a week (and normally, I hate eggplant!). Speaking of, my roommate works near Scoops and actually does go there 1-3 times per week, and has yet to grow tired of it! Scoops is a tiny take-out spot with a 100% vegan pay-by-the-pound food bar, accompanied by a little ice cream bar. The food bar rotates its selection daily - mostly scrumptious veggie dishes and 1-2 faux meat or fish dishes. The veggie lasagna is also a favorite which they have at least once a week. Don't take it personally if the owner seems a little unfriendly at first. He has a good sense of humor and likes to joke with his customers...you just may not realize he's joking right away. The first time I came, I asked him what all the dishes were (they're not labeled) and with a straight face he responded, "...Food." I thought, oh great, he doesn't like me, what am I doing here, but I continued to prod so I'd know what to order. While he was ringing me up, another newbie came in with the same question, and the owner responded similarly. Phew, I thought! This is just what he does. And sure enough, my Scoops-regular-roomie confirmed he's actually a really sweet guy who just likes to have a little fun with his customers. I can get behind that. Vegan or not, I highly recommend Scoops. You'll feel that comforting good-full feeling afterward that'll make you want to take a stroll at Prospect Park...orrr nap. read more

This is a strange place but the food is good. It's basically a pay by the pound place but you don't see the scale, you don't see the register and you just pay whatever the person who dishes out the food tells you to pay. I ordered Lo Mein with vegetables, soy protein crumbles and drumsticks. I told the guy (who I assume was the owner) just one big spoonful but he gave me whatever would fill the medium box. (You get a choice of small, medium and large.) I paid $14 which was more than I expected although I got a lot of food. ‍ Still the food was good. I didn't have the ice cream but it looked good. Lord-a-mercy! It's good to clear out your systems once in awhile, and after so many high-fat, high-red-meat, highly seasoned meals, it's good to get something honest, simple and flavorful at a hole-in-the-wall. This place is the very definition of a neighborhood joint. The owner/chef seems to be a rasta-man selling ice cream, juices and pre-made meals. Those meals alone are worth the visit - When I was there on Thursday it was pimento (allspice) and nutmeg laden nut meats served on top of noodles, fresh salads and a delicious blackeye pea stew on the side. Ask for some hot sauce and be prepared for a fiery introduction to the flavor of scotch bonnet peppers. Don't worry - ask for a scoop of non-dairy ice cream and it'll cool you off. The flavors are decent (tofutti, banana strawberry, etc) - I would recommend a scoop of grapenut (the cereal) flavored ice cream. Sorry, you won't find meat here, nor would you find any alcohol, so Guinness Stout is out. But why would you need it? The price isn't too bad either ($10 for a large platter, $4 with change for a single scoop...what, you never paid $4.50 for a single scoop at Ample Hills or Oddbrothers?), and they have wonderful tasting coconut water. The food is very good, however they are very rude and the food is never ready . Most restaurants, open and are ready to serve by 11am / 12pm this is never the case with Scoops. They begin to serve well past 2 pm. By then my crave have flustered away. So If your ready for rude service and great food, then Scoops is what you'll get. This place appears to be just an ice cream parlor from the outside, but it's also a vegetarian (vegan too, maybe?) Jamaican restaurant which I've heard is run by Rastafarians. I went here for the Jamaican food and I haven't tried the ice cream yet. They have two different kinds of meat substitutes, one is in a jerk sauce and the other in a red sauce which tastes exactly like sausage. You can get one or both of these in a platter that includes rice and beans, noodles, and a vegetable (they had okra when I was there). Everything is very tasty, especially the fake meat. Definitely not for everybody, but I really like this kind of stuff. You can get a 7 or 10 dollar platter and the $7 one is probably enough for most people. read more

Even though it's a VEG/Vegan joint. If you're a meat eater and/or a dairy queen, you'll still dig scoops. You're in for a tasty steam pan or six of beautifully spiced vittles (ask for "the fire" if you have a hot tooth, they deliver!) Stayed for apple pie and ice cream. The pie was awesome and the ice cream set me straight as well. The cooks/counter folk are a bit timid, but they are super nice. Scoops rules. !!! Basically everything these guys cook is awesome. The other night they surprised me with veggie hotdogs: there were two flavors regular and bacon. Roti with curry inside is one of my favorite meals. They also have wontons but you have to preorder. Deserts are their speciality too. Apple and blueberry pies are low on sugar but reach on berries and fruit. And ice cream is probably one of the best vegetarian ice creams I've ever tasted. Inside the place is very small with only one table and a small bar space in case you want to eat there. Most customers prefer to takeaway. You can observe how the food is cooked and most of the ingredients are right there, on the shelves in the kitchen. Nice simple ambience. I've never had anything other than the vegan ice cream (they serve Kleins, much like many other places in the area), but really that's all that matters in life anyway. I visited this tiny vegan haven on a food tour of Brooklyn. They had vegan lasagna, which was pretty good I suppose (only 'pretty' good because I still love my real cheese). But the highlight was the maize soup. It was creamy (how?! there is no dairy in it!), hearty and flavorful. There were huge chunks of potato and even a piece of corn still on the cob in it, making this soup more interactive than most. I also tried the soy chunks and lentil stew, both excellently flavored. As a life-long vegetarian, I appreciate being confident that everything on the menu is meat-free. 'Scoops', the owner, is apparently a legend in Trinidad for his soups and after tasting his, I can see why. He was also very friendly. While it's quite out of the way for many folk, it's worth the trek for any vegan/vegetarian foodie! read more

When I went to this place to get some vegan ice cream. The two people behind the counter looked at me and said a very bland hello and then went back to doing whatever it was they were doing. Nobody else was in the place except for me. I waited several minutes for them to ask me what I'd like but they just ignored me - not even letting me know that they would be with me in a minute so after several minutes of being ignored I walked out. The veggie patties are a little on the weird side here, more akin to whole wheat spring rolls than curried beef in flaky fried pastry, but still worth a taste. Nice folks running the show. I was surprised that *all* off their ice cream was vegan, and when I spied a lovely pale green one, I dared not hope... but yes, it was pistachio ice cream! I've been eating at this place about five times a week and it's consistently delicious, healthy and invigorating. After a night of smoking and drinking I like to pretend that I'm undoing the damage with their shot of wheat grass that comes with ginger and garlic. There is no need for a menu and a small order of food is more often than not enough. The people are friendly, their fresh squeezed juice is delicious and feels like drinking 1,000 different flavors that perfectly blend to create a sublime sensation. I'm actually considering relocating to live closer to this place, I'm not even vegetarian anymore but this is what food is supposed to be; pure, delicious and untainted by preservatives or chemicals. Only downside is nowhere to sit but hopefully they will expand to include a seating area. If you're vegan or vegetarian this is HEAVEN. read more
