We had a good experience with them in a previous home, so when we moved and needed a new sidewalk and porch, well, the answer seemed obvious. Sadly, my new neighbor (our driveways connect) needed a new sidewalk and I wholeheartedly recommended Sclafmore - BIG mistake. The work, that was supposed to be done in two weeks, took over 4 months. The tile work on my porch and walkway was cracking even before the job was finished. They redid it - but STILL cracking and now falling apart. I emailed and called these guys TWICE for an estimate and both times they left me hanging. I even sent them pictures upon their request and no one got back to me. It's so difficult for these guys to come out for an estimate. They're located in middle village and I'm in Maspeth (literally a 5-10 minute drive). Several years ago we had work done by this company and were so impressed with the results and professionalism so when we needed some major work done on our porch and walkway of the home we moved into last year, we didn't hesitate to call them. BIG MISTAKE. We started with John, the owner we were so happy with on the old job. He 'disappeared' soon after work begain. The job started in early spring (told a 7-10 day job) and they just finished it in mid October! It took so long because SO much had to be re-done due to poor workmanship or improper products used. We still have water collecting in places they promised would drain properly and this nasty oozing coming through our newly bricked steps. I could understand if we went with some 'cheapo-company' but we paid dearly for poor work and a half a year of aggravation. Lastly, neighbors on both sides of us, who had their sidewalks done by Sclafamore last year, have significant cracking and crumbling of their new concrete jobs. read more

I have to say that Sclafmore construction made good on their promise to remove and replace my entire driveway and sidewalk with new and much improved "poured in place" concrete. The new cement is smooth and well done. We do believe that the original concrete company that was sub contracted by Sclafmore, provided an inferior grade of cement at first. I just had my kitchen completely renovated by Sclafmore Construction (gas, water and heating pipes relocated, walls taken down to the studs, etc.) and I can't even put into words what a phenomenal job they did! All my neighbors have used Sclafmore in the past. So I called Sclafmore last fall for a renovation to our patio. I scheduled a visit with Ralph, who is the owner. He measured and and gave me an estimate right then and there. He drew up the contract and his crew started a few days later. They worked relentlessly for 2 weeks, redoing the brick and tile. It was an amazing job. So amazing that we hired them again before the year ended to install installation in the attic, connect pipe to the air vent of the bathroom to the outside of the house and redo the grout on our bathroom tiles. We are hiring them again for a third job this spring to do some roofing, capping the fascia and some interior work as well. Excellent work and Ralph and the crew are so lovely. I contacted Sclafmore construction about having my old concrete removed and installing new pavers and a new PVC fence. Ralph immediately answered the phone and told me he would come in the next morning. He arrived on time and quoted me the best of 3 bids that I had gotten so far. I decided to give him the job. Ralph's crew arrived ahead of schedule. I was very impressed by his trucks and all the equipment that they had. His crew were all professionally dressed and looked like a team not just a bunch of guys doing work! I can't express how cleanly and accurately all the work was done. The workers were very polite and focused on their work. I watched the entire job being done., and they answered any questions I had. When the pavers were being installed, they meticulously checked each paver and rejected quite a few that were broken or scratched.. One day one of the workers told me he found a $20 bill in my back yard, I asked my wife and it did indeed belong to her. That was a very honest thing he did. Because they were so nice I decided to pay for their lunch a couple of times. This was an expensive project, and my wife and I are so very happy with the results. October 2016, I hired Sclafmore Construction to install cinderblock raised garden bed and gravel walking paths in backyard. They did a wonderful job. I was on site for the entire project. I just finished a complete outdoor renovation of my patio and entrance to my office with Sclafmore Construction. Their work was excellent and they 'knocked the ball out of the park' in terms of the final result. They were professional, punctual, meticulous in their work, and courteous. I have received so many complements from everyone that walks by my house. I even had a union contractor walk by who complemented me on choosing them and couldn't stop admiring the quality of their work. The scope of the project was comprehensive, since it involved installation of new electrical wiring for outdoor lights and an outdoor outlet, installation of new plumbing for an outdoor water faucet, removal of a huge tree that was destroying my previous concrete walkway and patio, and complete demo of everything that was in front of the house. Everyone that was part of Ralph's crew shared his professional approach to their work. The plumber who worked on the outdoor faucet showed up punctually at 6:30am on a SATURDAY morning, which allowed him to install the plumbing fixture in time to not delay Ralph's other crew members from continuing their work on the brick and stucco within the hour, meaning at 7:30am that same Saturday. Which brings me to my next point. Ralph's crew was here everyday for 6 days straight, arriving punctually at 7:30am each morning and working NON-STOP until 4pm. Ralph came by everyday to check in on how the project was progressing, but he didn't have to stay long because his crew was so competent that they didn't need him to be there. While the crew was working, my neighbor passed by who had outdoor work done by Sclafmore a few years ago and noticed that the same crew working on my project worked on his. This showed me that Ralph's crew has been together for a while and that there is no turnover of workers in his company, which means that he treats his workers well, resulting in quality work. Very important. While the work was taking place, I noticed how efficiently the project progressed. There was tremendous progress made each day toward completing the project. The crew was composed of 5 guys, and they worked so well together. Each member would perform a different task, so while one was laying brick, the other was mixing mortar, while another member was fine tuning the cuts for the pavers being laid down, etc. The large crew allowed the work to progress quickly and not drag on, which unfortunately happens with other projects I have witnessed in my neighborhood with other construction companies. In short, everything from the workmanship of the crew, to the concrete subcontractor who poured the foundation for the patio and walkway, to even the supply house used by Ralph for ordering and delivering the brick and pavers, was top-notch and professional. I happen to be a very demanding customer since I am by nature a very technically oriented person. I had many (MANY) questions and concerns about the project before starting, but Ralph addressed each concern and explained his reasoning for each step. In my many interactions with Ralph, I was never brushed off as some annoying customer, but rather treated with respect. Out of these interactions with Ralph came a realization that he really cares about the work that is carried out by his crew. Ralph even came by multiple times AFTER the project was completed to make sure everything was alright and finished correctly. When initially choosing contractors for the job, I wanted someone who performed their work with precision and attention to detail. I also wanted a crew that would be efficient and not drag on the work for an extended period of time. What further sold me on Sclafmore was when Ralph told me that his crew only works on one job at a time and that they do not go to another project until they complete what they are working on. His estimate was reasonable compared to the other estimates I received. I decided to go with Sclafmore because I was initially impressed with Ralph's honest and professional approach to addressing any concerns or ideas that I presented to him before the start of the project. I had my driveway/ front yard redone and the job was good. The work was done in a day I believe and everything looks fine. They are a licensed construction company. So you would think that they can advise you on whether or not the job is following NY laws. They are only interested in doing the job and getting your business. After a year, unfortunately, I got a violation from DOB saying that my front yard is not 'green' enough and that there is too much cement, not enough plants. When I look at the contract we signed with Sclafmore, the fine print says basically it's not their fault to make sure the job is up to code. Then I had to spend more money to fix violation and cut out the cement that was done in the first place. Moral of the story is read all fine print and possibly hire an architect. read more
