When I mentioned that she cut it too short, she told me it looks better now -- and I realized she is not fluent in English. We need people--on yelp and elsewhere--who will speak their own truth, not just what others want, need, or expect them to say. ***** Really only ** 1/2 *. I really hate to give a small independent barber shop--a dying breed--a less than 4-star review, especially in the midst of the upscale market for haircuts that appeal to narcissism-based "what's in style." But I did have a very uncomfortable experience. I had had my haircut by May a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't understand why my haircut was so "rough," uneven in length. Perhaps she had misunderstood and cut my hair so short that it was difficult to get it to lie down and to "blend" on the top of my head. So I went back two days in a row and finally spoke to her. I asked if there was anything she could do to blend my hair on top so that it didn't stick up (something that had never happened in the almost year I had had my hair cut by her) and appear so spikey and uneven. She almost blew up at me and told me I could find another person to cut my hair. In the end, she cut a little more off, but told me there was really nothing more she could do. What was equally puzzling was that I had to wait at least fifteen minutes while she cut the hair of another man, an African-American. This was about 2-3 times the time (20 minutes) she had spent on my hair the last time I had come in. She was meticulous in cutting his hair, going back and forth to make sure it looked right. I recall thinking she was pretty rushed when she had done my hair, but, at the time, said to myself, "Well, if the end result is O.K., who cares if she takes 5-6 minutes to do it?" The other Asian woman had once cut my hair and the results were similar. I attributed that to her lack of skill, but May had always done an excellent job. Sometimes being of a certain background (East Asian) may, ironically, be a diadvantage when the service is being rendered by a person of the same race. She must be under a lot of pressure to please people whose demands are tacit but, if not met, could be verbally and emotionally very unpleasant. The customer wasn't even wearing all black, either. This is probably why she got testy and annoyed. All the other times she was sweet. I doubt if she usually spends that much time on one persn. Sticking up for your rights is difficult when you've been culturally taught to be quiet and passive ("not make waves"). It's unfortunate that many Asian-Americans, out of frustration and resentment, learn to treat each other poorly. Afterwards, I had to make a difficult decision to get my hair "fixed" at a different business, with an international three-week trip coming up in 48 hours. read more

I was a little surprised with the charges for Men's haircut; usually on the experience side in comparison to Bay Area. Overall experience wasn't so great either! Starting with the upside. They were able to accommodate me as a walk-in. The haircut was relatively even. Price would have been ok if the service was good. Seattle downtown barbers seem be pretty inconsistent from my experience. This shop was clean but the barbers smelled of smoke. We discussed the haircut, I'm pretty simple cut it short, straight and leave an inch. We discussed it three times. Three times he asked me, three times I answered At the end, it was much too long, a bad bowl cut and uneven in the front/sides. The neck shave (included) was done begrudgingly. I generally like the haircuts I get here. The Asian lady (whose name I don't know) does a good job, and with good consistency between visits. However, I am not a fan of the owner. He is also a barber, and he cut my hair on at least one occasion. I remember being mildly humiliated by the experience. I have some dandruff, and he kept brushing my scalp roughly with a spiky round brush, as if to make as many flakes fall out as possible, in a way that I could see it. I've also seen him be rude and cold to a prospective customer (maybe more), who was turned away because the place was "closed" -- even though it was 20+ mins before the listed closing time. They no longer give cuts for $11.. The rising price of gas and global threat of terror has forced them to raise their prices to $16 a cut. But what you get a a good cut and a razor on the neckline. There's also a 6inch TV so you can watch KING5 news and advertisements for Great Clips which is across the street. I've come here often after work and only once did I leave because there was a long line. I also got a skinny from one of the barbers. Since my brain as been destroyed by too many DYLs I can't remember the details but the owner is cool and the other barbers are really friendly. They also take appointments but if you're a real man you don't make appointments. You show up and the fate of your hair is up to the hair gods! So is parking. If the street parking gods don't smile you're screwed because that's all you got. Anyways I have no idea why this place is listed as a breakfast spot but i assure you that I've asked and they don't have a breakfast menu. Anyways I'd write more but ... I had a very nice experience at this place. I went here on a weekday at around 4.30pm and it was almost empty except for one lady who greeted me nicely. She asked me to sit on one of three chairs at this place and we discussed for 2-3 minutes what exactly I wanted to get out of this haircut. I liked that she was nice and patient in hearing me out and then added her advice. The setting at this place is a little bit unusual. While your hair is being cut you are not facing the front big mirror. Instead your chair or swirled and you are facing a big Samsung TV. I was apprehensive about this setting as I like to see what is being done to my hair. But the lady did not do anything that I didn't want or explain earlier and would ask me before any major cut. Also, there is a small mirror next to the TV in case you are really obsessed with how you look every single minute. The haircut ended with a nice neck shave (at the back of your neck). She also sprinkled an after shave and applied a dry gel before combing my hair. All of this for just $25 plus tip. During this entire time, I told her how I found about this place through Yelp. And as we discussed more, we realized that the information on Yelp is outdated and for some reason they can't update it. Okay, this place was good at best before. Now it's great! Scissors Palace was my neighborhood barber shop when I lived in Queen Anne. Like any great barbershop, it has a great old-school vibe, it's cash only and walk-in friendly. The only problem was that for about $10 more I felt I got a much better haircut elsewhere. That elsewhere turned out to be Valentine's in Greenwood. Not to knock Valentine's, but I wasn't too big a fan of the shop. It was a bit too metrosexual for my tastes, but my barber there, Emily, gave a great cut at a fairly reasonable price, so I was happy. Then the greatest thing ever happened, Emily left Valentine's and moved into my old barbershop, Scissors Palace. It's too good for words. You can't find many barbershops or commercial hair salons that will cut your hair for $13. Great value overall. Place - the shop is small and outdated, but I believe it's been around for 25 years. There are only 3 chairs so there could be a wait, however it is cozy and most importantly clean. They also have a TV and magazines to kill time while you wait. I have finally found my barbershop in Lower QA! As a new resident to the neighborhood I gave each of the nearby places a try, including the chains. Scissors Palace has won me over and earned my repeat business going forward. They use the metal clippers, which I find to be more consistent than the cheaper plastic versions. This is critical for me having such a short hairstyle. The neck shave (valued at $7 by itself) is included with the haircut and is probably the best part of the experience. My only ding is the price for the haircut ($25 for a men's cut and $15 for a buzz, both include a neck shave), but in my opinion you get what you pay for. What you get here is a solid haircut, the ability to watch tv (they'll let you choose what you want to watch), a much needed neck shave, and conversation should you choose to partake. I'm a big fan. I happened to walk in when there was no wait (a HUGE win for a Saturday afternoon!) and was immediately seated. I simply showed a picture of me with my favorite haircut and with just a quick glance, she set to work making it happen. A few minutes of idle chat (and golf on the TV) later, and I had a nearly perfect haircut. Another tweak or two, and we were nearly set. But wait there's more- offered a razor finish on my neckline, how could I decline? I believe the haircut was $19 without tip, which was super reasonable given the normal Seattle pricing on these things. I was paying a few bucks more at Squire in downtown. The quality of haircuts you get here are consistently great. I've had haircuts from Tony and Emily and both do a solid job. I've come to like Emily a little more because she's extremely thorough and covers details that I wouldn't have otherwise noticed, but Tony does fine, as well. The neck shave is a nice touch, too. The hot lather for it smells incredible - I wish there was a consumer version of that scent. The shop is pretty small but has a TV, which is especially nice on game days. I only have one real gripe and that is that I've had a couple of issues getting a seat. Their policy has been in flux regarding appointments - it used to be no appointments, then I went in a couple of months ago on a Sunday morning and they were booked with appointments the entire day, and then yesterday I tried to book one and they said that they don't do more than one appointment in a time slot even if two people will be in. It's also so low tech it's a bit frustrating. I don't need a flashy site or anything, I wish that I could see the hours somewhere and that they had an answering machine or something. I went this morning at 10AM and no one was there. When I called later Tony was in, but was a bit curt with me when I was trying to inquire about getting an appointment for today/tomorrow and who would be in tomorrow. I'd ordinarily dock two stars for that kind of customer service, but Emily has been so nice that I'll just dock them one. Awesome place for a good old fashioned hair cut, not chop. I am used to getting a jacked up hair cut, cuz I go to Bo-Rics. OOOPS. I am lazy. But this place was cool. The two guys were just total dudes. Watching the Olympics on the flat screen and chillin. The guy gave me a great haircut and was totally thorough, it took him about a half hour. And then he shaved by neck and around my ears! That has never happened, and it was fun, but kinda scary knowing that he was wielding a straight blade close to my jugular. But I got out in one piece. This was my go to haircut place the two years I lived in Seattle. I tried to go when it opened on Saturday/Sunday because haircuts took forever, so if there was a wait, it was a long one. However, the giant TV was always on sports, so it wasn't intolerable waiting when there was one. Pretty consistent, decent haircut and neck shave for $19. A little small talk, but not the awkward, forced conversation you get at most haircut places. My haircut wasn't always perfect, but it was good enough often enough to keep me coming back. Went there for the first time a bit ago. Loved the atmosphere, wasn't a long wait, the hair dresser was friendly and kept you entertained...what more do you want? The shaving of the neck was cool, have never had that before, and the hair cut was well done. My only "complaint" is that I prefer when a hair cut still looks good growing out (as I get it cut and grow it out for 2-3 months usually), however it's starting to get a little goofy. I get that I have really difficult to cut hair with lots of unexpected cowlicks, and I've always had a hard time finding a good barber or stylist because of that, but this was probably the worst hair cut I've ever had. Like a weird boxy short bowl cut. I got home and the girlfriend's face went white it looked so bad. She spent about an hour trying to "fix" the haircut, but the stylist hadn't really left enough hair on my head to work with, having taken off way more than I asked for. I would have stopped her sooner, but she kept the chair turned away from the mirror so I couldn't see my hair until she was totally finished. It's cheap, but sometimes you pay for cheap. read more
