We came here for a second time after having a horrible customer service experience at nearby Pizza Mari' (see separate one star review). Out first experience here was a great one, and the second one did not disappoint. The schnitzel (first meal) was delicious, and the Austrian-style potato salad shines. My second meal was a potato-cream soup from the daily menu and the Styrian Backhendl Salat with Fried Chicken and Pumpkin Seed Oil. It, too, was delicious and generous in its portion size. Contrary to reviews, the waitress wasn't very friendly but she was extremely efficient. Maybe it was due to them being understaffed. We ordered for the daily specials, a pork and potato soup and spinach risotto. Both came with cream of zucchini as an appetizer. All the dishes were served lukewarm. Between the two dishes, the pork and potato soup was better. The pork was tender and juicy. The risotto, while generously portioned, was bland. The cheese was overwhelming and was a poor complement to the risotto. I would still recommend the shop though. It was reasonably priced, the servings were generous, provides a homely feel, even though the food was average. The shop itself is spacious and comfortable with minimalist outfitting. read more

Affordable, authentic Austrian food. This was near my hotel just outside the city center, so I went for a stroll and was pleased to find a spacious restaurant with ample outdoor seating. I was eager to try what Austrians eat, and Schöen Perle delivered. I arrived at 2:30pm on a Monday and there was plenty of room to sit. I asked for a starter recommendation and had the dumpling soup (€3.90). It was a tasty bed broth with one hearty grainy dumpling. I then had the small schnitzel (€8). The veal cutler and three boiled potatoes was plenty for me, but a medium or large plate would be good to share. My waiter was kind and food was served up fast. This is a nice spot for a quick meal. I LOVE this friendly, pretense-free, neighborhood restaurant! My first "authentic" Viennese meal on my first day in Vienna was über delicious! I will definitely go back before I leave Vienna. And also because I totally forgot to tip the wait staff...have to go back and set things right. The waiters were helpful - but ask if they speak English, because they'll assume you're from Wein. They have English (and other languages) translation of the menu in the back. Super helpful!!! The Schnitzel was not after the original recipe... And Wiener Schnitzel made out of pork is not a Wiener Schnitzel. The crust was out of corn-flour which is a shame. If you want a real Wiener Schnitzel, save yourself the 18€ and go somewhere else. But al the rest seems just fine! read more

In the second district is this very popular neighborhood place. It's quite plain-looking, but serves up some great food. -Kürbiscremesuppe mit Bio-Kernöl und gerösteten Kürbiskernen (Cream of pumpkin soup): Delicious. The creamy pumpkin soup has a distinct pumpkin taste and the bits of pumpkin seeds throughout really add flavor and a wonderful crunch. A good filling portion, too. -Rindsuppe mit Grießknockerl (Beef bouillon with semolina dumplings): Perfect, just like what beef bouillon should taste like and the dumpling within is cooked to perfection. -Quiche mit Mangold und Schafskäse, dazu Salat (Swiss Chard and Goat Cheese Quiche with Salad): the quiche was filled perfectly with a nice ratio of Swiss Chard to Goat Cheese. All ingredients were impeccably fresh. -Calamari vom Grill mit Jungzwiebel, Chili, Olivenöl und Reis (Grilled Calamari with spring onions, chili, olive oil & rice): The calamari was grilled nicely, leaving it perfectly tough and chewy. It tasted best when you stuffed the hollow bits with warm rice as it made the fishy taste a bit milder. -Bio-Tafelspitz mit Rösterdäpfel, Schnittlauchsauce, Apfelkren und Wurzelgemüse (boiled beef with Viennese potatoes, chive sauce and apple-horseradish): The Tafelspitz has a nice flavoring but I would have preferred it to have been juicier. The Viennese potatoes though, they were like potato pancakes or VERY crispy hashbrowns and were exquisite. Very crispy and flavorful. FINAL VERDICT: Albeit having to sit in the smoking room, the food was impeccable. All dishes had great flavor, were hearty and the good taste was consistent. read more

Very good restaurant which both locals and visitors of the city drop by. The schinitzel is very good and the portion is big. There are 2 kinds of schinitzel here:pork or red meat. They taste well. The waitors are very friendly and helpful and much better than other places in Wein. Recommended indeed. read more

I love Schöne Perle - and not only because I live in the second district. I'm not handing out a five though, service is alright but could be better, the interior could be a bit cozier (even though I know that's not the point) and it's simply not a five-star place. The price is of course considered when handing out stars. Schöne Perle has good prices, 7,20 Euro for the lunch menu. We've had dinner there twice and lunch there once and everything has been great. We eat vegatarian + fish but have friends who have tried the tafelspitz (15 Euro) and the schnitzel. The susitorte is amazing! Last time we had red lentil soup (creamy and a deliciously spicy) and a fish fillet with potatoe salad. As you can read in the german reviews, the food comes from nearby Karmelitermarkt. Such a cute little restaurant in the 2nd district. This place probably had my favorite experience w/ the schnitzel! IT WAS SO TASTY. We went on a warm summer night and it was perfect to sit outdoors and enjoy a chilled glass of white wine w/ dinner. This is the place you should head over to for the cute authentic Austrian experience. I will definitely making my way back here in the near future! A very popular spot to hit, especially if you are fond of the second district. Grab a meal and a couple drinks, but making a reservation for evening and weekends are wise. I boil it down to luck when I find a place without reservation. The meals are classics,which you can find in any Austrian restaurant/cafe. I have yet to be disappointed by the meals, although I have yet to be blown away either. They offer a bio-steak as a premium meal, which I find very overpriced in such a place as their kitchen is designed to continue the expectation of classics and not to bring upon a new admiration. They offer Grieskirchener Bier, which is an upper Austrian choice and surprising to find in Vienna. They also offfer Kozel (Czech beer). To the point, their bar is well supported with a good taste. The atmosphere is typical to itself. They have their own ambiance and do not try to copy anywhere else I have come across. Smoking and non-smoking areas to please both crowds. You can arrange a family dinner here but not a place if you are planning to dress up. You'll find a more casual crowd here, but not surprising if you find a group of old-timers who plan to share stories, drink schnapps and enjoy some tid bits. The staff helps to upkeep the atmosphere and they are friendly. Only problem is the same as any Austrian restaurant: staff is busy so they are not trying to get you what you want. My favorite meal in Austria was had at Schöne Perle! While on holiday with two friends we grabbed lunch at this great restaurant. I had the Käferbohnen-Kürbiseintopf (Bean & Pumpkin stew) and it was amazing- very hearty & filling, I definitely want to try and recreate this at home! My friends got the Schnitzel (she said it was the best she had all trip) and the Erdäpfelgulasch (also a hit). I would highly recommend this restaurant. This place was a breath of fresh air, after having toured Iceland, Amsterdam, and Barcelona, not having luck with any good food at all! The schnitzel was absolutely amazing, as was everything else we had. The atmosphere was a pleasant mix of very old, and modern decor. The service was prompt and with a smile, even though we did not know German. The server was obviously happy to help us in English, which is more than I can say for other places in Vienna. read more

Wonderful! My husband, sister, and myself got into our hostel, Meininger's, later in the afternoon and were looking for something to eat. This place was within reasonable walking distance, the pictures on Yelp looked delicious, and the price seemed right. The restaurant was really cool. My husband and I have lived in the city of Buffalo, NY for the past 6 years, so if you've ever been in the rather hipster scene of Elmwood Village, you'll understand what I mean when I say we felt right at home...only in Vienna. The servers didn't speak amazing English, but we weren't bothered. The menus did come in English, and it was enough that I was able to match up the German of the daily specials to figure out close enough to what they were. We ordered some excellent filtered light beers and read over the menu. Once we were ready to order, my sister went for the spaetzel, my husband did a boiled beef plate, and I figured out one of the daily specials was asparagus, boiled potatoes, and the server was able to communicate it was served with an egg. So I went with that. Our food came out in pretty good time and everything looked beautiful! My sister loved her spaetzel, my husband adored the boiled meat served with fried smashed potatoes, and I totally won the day with the asparagus. They were huge!! Very much unlike anything we have in the States. The stalks were beautifully cooked to not be so undercooked to be stringy, nor overcooked to be mushy. The green and white asparagus was the perfect texture and the lemon/butter sauce they were served in was rich and flavorful. There was no egg, but now I'm wondering if the server was trying to say the sauce was some kind of hollandaise sauce, because while it was no hollandaise sauce I was used too, it was just too creamy to be straight up butter. There might have been an egg yolk in there to thicken it up, but it was still very thin and tart. The boiled potatoes were whole, and perfectly cooked though and paired with the sauce perfectly. It was such a wonderful vegetarian meal! We would have happily gone here again, and in fact, I really want to go back to Vienna to explore it more. Schöne Perle is a bit of a modernized beer garden - lots of wooden communal tables as well as a few smaller ones as well. Theres a seperate smoking room, seperated by an automatic sliding door, if you need to have a smoke. If you dont, stay away from the door- the nonsmoking section is big enough that you can sit far enough away. Good selection of Austrian wine with good prices and the food, which is a mish-mash of Austrian cuisine and things like pasta and falafel. Food prices are also good and the minestrone was awesome. Seems like a well visited place by locals (I was taken there by one) and could be a good choice for a more off-the-beaten-path kind of restaurant when youd like to do Austrian, but would like to avoid Edelweiss. read more

Huge disappointment. We went there because my dad wanted a really good veal Schnitzel. The place had good reviews online and was considered a secret gem. I have no idea why. The restaurant is old, loud, in serious need of a good renovation, and not at all cozy. We were served the wrong food and the server couldn't really be bothered with questions or concerns, exhibiting a "whatever, it must be your fault" attitude. German is my first language, so there was no language barrier either. They also charged us for the "extra big" portion size because we didn't think it would be necessary to specify we wanted the "normal" potions. Last but not least the food was average, if that. You could tell other clientele were getting a bit anxious, especially those who had had their orders in for some time. The food was good but not that good.
