I had been in a few times when I lived nearby. the place just amazed me!! Most was the wall of little wooden drawers !!! I could play in that store all day!!! I just love it. and the employees have all been so nice & willing to help!! I also took my screens from my house from Pennsauken there to be re-screened! such a great job. I was looking for a store that replaced screens for my front security door. I also wanted a metal screen, so I posted on my fb page asking if anyone knew of a place. Two do my friends recommended this shop to me and I am thrilled that they did! Very convenient to get there from my neighborhood in Philadelphia. The staff is very friendly. Best hardware store in America. Was most recently there to get a new window screen which I took terrible initial measurements for so had to go back two more times to get it right and they didn't charge me for the adjustments. Everyone that works there is always extremely helpful and friendly. Sometimes I go here even if I don't need anything because I enjoy it so much. Can't recommend enough. read more

This store is 92 years old! The big box stores didnt do this one in. I am fixing a sliding door. I struck out everywhere. I stopped in with the part I need. I should be getting it in a few days. This is your old school neighborhood hardware store. The staff is helpful and friendly. Its a very personal vibe here. I will continue to patronize this store! They seem to be able to get hard to find, out of production type hardware. Prices are reasonable too! Its in Palmyra on Broad Street. They have limited parking in front of the store, but extra parking in the rear of store. Just look for the statue of the horse and buggy thats the landmark in front of the store. read more

Sure, you always have the option of going to Home Despot, or how Lowe can you go. If you need help, you certainly might find someone who can tell you something. Or you can figure it out on your own, buy a lot of stuff, get home, find you have the wrong stuff, waste more time and money, and finally ....wait are you really saving time or money? Or you can go to Schwering's. Yes, some things cost a little more. But you will walk in, someone will ask if they can help you and happily share actual expertise with you, or leave you alone. They'll find it for you if you want. If you need to replace one of those doo-dads, they have a drawer with three. Or they can get it. I recently was building a float for a July 4th parade. Yes I know how very cool that sounds.... It was an 8 foot replica of the USS Chesapeake from the War of 1812 for the Burlington County Historical Society (Capt Lawrence, the guy who said "Don't Give Up the Ship" was born in Burlington City, you see). So, this is an odd project by any standard. The people at Schwerings spent oodles of time helping me pick out parts for a wheel system, PVC for cannons, ways to make masts, etc... Try that at the Despot. Or, when I needed to fix an old sink installation I stopped at Lowes, and bought the wrong stuff again. I took the odd fixture to Schwerings, they figured out what I needed and sold me the part ... for $3. They have a great stove/fireplace section, and cleaning and gardening stuff. Their strength, though is the hardware (imagine that, in a hardware store) and the helpful knowledge. read more

You can tell them what you need to do and they'll *help* you. Heck, they even let my dad take something home and said that if it didn't fit he could just bring it back. This store is a staple of the community & please support it. Yes, you might pay a few pennies more than at the BIG BOX store, but for those extra cents, you are going to get great customer service and amazing knowledge for what ever fix-it, fix-up or gardening scenario you have. Not only that but the owner is very GREEN conscious and has many product solutions for you, including non toxic paint (yes, they even keep a record of the paint you purchase in case you need more), cleaning products, etc. Just a couple of examples: Bring a spotted leaf off of your rose bush = Schwerings crew: its a fungus. Problem solved. Need glass cut? Screens mended? Pipes threaded? Can't find a weird-sized screw that you need? This place has it all. It's such a GEM, I don't know what we would do without these types of stores. read more

We were recently looking to replace our 25 year old fireplace insert in our Condo. We had been to many different stores but the prices were so outrageous. After seeing an ad in a local magazine for fireplaces at Schwering's Hardware Store, we decided to check it out. After a review of the options with the owner, Steve Schwering, we decided to install a pellet stove insert. A check of our existing conditions was done for free, something that other stores charged for, and the price was thousands less than we were quoted by others. Well the installation was done today and the stove looks and works great. We have actually turned off the heat pump and will now be able to heat the entire 1500 sq ft condo using only the pellet stove. Many thanks to Steve and his installer Keith of "Expertfireplaces" for a job well done. Customer service was beyond belief. After only one visit we both were greeted on a first name basis and treated as valued customers. We have never experienced this level of service anywhere! The customer's needs clearly comes first at Schwering's Hardware Store. Finally, it should be noted that they have virtually anything you could or would need from a hardware store. For the past two days I have been working in Schwering's helping to redesign their hardware displays (nuts, bolts, screws, etc) for a private hardware distributer. I have never been to this store before. I can honestly, without a doubt this is the best hardware store I have ever been in! The owner, Steve is always here and along with his employees are very friendly and helpful. Home Depot and Lowe's could never match the level of personal service that this store offers to it's customers. This store has every hard to find product that most stores would never think of carrying. Shop once at this store, and you can understand why they have been in business over 90 years. Without question, the best hardware store in all of South Jersey. If you have to drive a few extra miles to shop here, it's well worth it!!! read more

They take service to a high art form at Schwering's. It's October and leaves blanket the lawn of the old house I just bought on Main St. I'm a first time homeowner. No rake. So I take a walk over to the Schwering's. To get a rake. Oh shoot! They're closing up. It's 10 minutes past. The shop is dark. Everyone else is gone. From the dispalys on the sidewalk out front, the last clerk on the job is bringing the last of the merchandise in for the night and locking up the front door. In desperation, I asked the young man if the register is already closed? Yes. He has no access to the credit card machine or the change drawer. Drat. I didn't have cash anyways; just my credit card. I ask the guy what time they open in the morning and after he tells me I thank him and start to walk away. "What do you need?", the kid says. "A rake." "We have these two different types. Which one do you want? You can just pay us the next time you come in." He said it so nonchalantly! I think people born with that a super-natural aptitude to serve others think nothing of it. I take my rake home and cleared my new lawn with a smile I couldn't quite wipe off my face. I admire the owner's talent for recruiting (training?) so expertly. That can't be easy. Every one of the staff there and every interaction I have had with them has been uniformly 3 cuts above any other hardware store experience. I have been to Lowes and Home Depot 200+ times (because of necessity not choice) No one of those visits have ever produced a warm moment. Thanks Schwering owner and staff. read more

This store is a pleasant trip back in time. I can remember going there with my Dad back in the 60's. He would have a handful of hardware are parts and he'd say to the store owner "Ya got any of these?" and he (I think his name was Dick Schwering) would go to a wall of drawers and give my old man whatever he needed along with some useful advice on how to do the job. I'm happy to say his son Steve has kept the tradition of genuine customer service firmly in place and the store has truly changed very little since I was a boy. You may pay a little more than at a big box store, but you will never match the service and personal attention of this fine traditional hardware store. Steve and his newer employees can go to those same drawers and magically find exactly what you need or they'll tell you where to get it. I will always be a loyal Schwerings customer and I hope they never change a thing. read more

I have been dealing with Schwerings for at least 25 years. They were not always the closest to me as I lived in Delanco. I would run to one of the large chains to save time and get the wrong item, then get frustrated and make the trip to Palmyra and not only get the right item but also get a walk through on how to repair something. How many times have you wandered around Lowes or the Depot trying to find someone to help you find an item? Not at Schwerings. If they do charge a tad more it is well worth the expert advice and quick service,I highly reccomend them! read more

My favorite hardware store..by far. Super friendly staff, good prices and you're in and out of the store in minutes. Try doing that at a box store! When you walk in, they ask you what you need and take you there. You don't have to meander around looking in the direction of where someone pointed. You get what you need and if they don't have it, they may even suggest where to get it. I go here first, before I go anywhere else. AND, if you shop here, you can feel good about supporting local businesses too. read more
