It was in an entirely different location then, so this was my first visit to the new taproom. Such a comfortable and fun spot! They have so many different events, including an ASL Guided Brewery Tour (which is quite unique) and a monthly book club. I originally stopped by to drop off books for their used book sale, but I stayed for two beers. Very friendly staff and appear to be highly engaged with their community. There was a nice variety of styles on their beer menu. I tried a pilsner (I believe?) and an Oktoberfest (because it was the season). Both very tasty! I enjoy the atmosphere of this brewery and the type of community they seem to be building.

Schlitz, the Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous...founded in 1849, and the number one beer in the US until the fifties. Growing up, Schlitz was a nasty, nasty beer that my brokeass punk friends and I would drink out of desperation and poverty. We were paying $5.99 a twelve pack for this swill. Most people go on some sort of beach trip during their senior week. I went to Huntington, WV to binge drink Schlitz for a week straight with my somewhat older friends. This review would be twenty pages long if I tried to recount those stories. Suffice it to say, Schlitz was bad, but it got the job done. The reason it was so bad was that the Schlitz family made some really bad business decisions in the '70s that were never corrected. These decisions included changing the recipe for the beer. The negative impacts of this recipe change eventually lead to the collapse and sale of the company in the early '80s. Initially bought by Stroh's, it was eventually picked up by Pabst, who now owns just about every $6 12 pack brand you can name. I've praised the marketing genius of Pabst in many venues by now. One of their best marketing moves, customer satisfaction-wise, was to recreate Schlitz's original recipe, which won Americans over for more than a century. Folks, I am telling you straight up, Schlitz is good again. Returning to that original recipe easily stands it above all other value beers and American domestics, including the beers of its brewer, MillerCoors. I did a blind taste test of cheap beers for a webzine a few years back and Schlitz won handily over Pabst, Stroh's, Blatz (all owned by Pabst) and High Life. It has a subtle, malty character, and a slight hop flavor. By far the best sixer under $5.69 around.
