I decided to come back to Scarlet bc they do such a great job (I drive 30 min for the pleasure!) My original Stylist had since left, so I was paired with Meagan , who does great with blonde! I made an appointment because I needed a "fix" to the style I had and they recommended a stylist they said was good at "fixing" cuts not sure how to spell her name but it's something like Shaari (said to have 10 year experience in barbering etc. Well, she should stick to being a barber. I left there with the worse haircut I have ever had. One side is longer than the other; the left side is severely chopped up and I I asked to have my bangs trimmed and tapered a little and she cut them very very short. My hair is a mess. TLDR: My super healthy, long hair has been damaged beyond repair by this salon and it will take years to grow out. **Note that this experience was at Scarlet's new location in Lakewood** I've spent a couple of months thinking through how to write this review, because I didn't want to give criticism until I was absolutely sure about what went wrong. But even after all this time I am suffering from the results of my balayage here. First of all, I have been getting my long, dark brunette hair balayaged for 6 years. I am not a newbie to this. I've had everything from light blond balayage to purple, and my hair has remained healthy through the expertise of stylists and olaplex. I had recently moved from NYC and read amazing reviews about this salon, so I booked an appointment. I carefully explained exactly what I wanted to my stylist: a subtle, dark mahogany balayage only lifted 2 levels to minimize damage. I should have known something was going catastrophically wrong when the stylist insisted on putting my bleached/processing hair under a heat lamp for 40 minutes. She definitely brought my dark brown hair up way beyond two levels, and it's most reflected in how extremely damaged my hair is now. It is brittle, breaking, and constantly looks like a giant frizzy knot now. I've tried everything to restore some health - olaplex treatments, protein and hydrating treatments - but it's at the point where my hair is damaged beyond help. The only option is years of regrowing it out, or cutting it all off. I probably would not feel as bad about the damage if the highlights and color came out good - but it did not. My stylist's first attempt at the toner turned my hair a streaky vampire/clown/fire engine red (see photo for reference). Red flag #2 was when she told me this looked great and sent me home. Well, when I got home I realized it was unacceptable and asked her to retone it, which she agreed to do, though she seemed a bit defensive when I came back a couple days later. With help from her manager, she retoned it and it turned out better, but still streaky. I accepted that this was as good as it would get. But I feel like I made a $250+ mistake coming here. Have you ever had a hair appointment, and when you got there, they were a bit behind and you had to wait. Me, too. No big deal, right? Exactly. Yesterday I got stuck in a detour that---turned into another detour. I was running late. Nothing I could do, since I am NOT a bird and I can't fly. I have been coming to this salon for at least 5 years, but yesterday was the last straw. They were incredibly rude!!! UNDERSTATEMENT. Instead of sticking me in a chair and starting to put color on my hair, they stood around the computer terminal trying to figure out when I could come back for another appointment, since I was "10 minutes late and the stylist had someone else coming in --in 20 MINUTES!!!!!!! You have a customer standing right there and you want them to come back? Work on my hair now; let the next customer wait, just like I have countless times. Even my hairstylist who is normally very affable was way off her game. One women at the front desk kept saying "well there is someone coming in here in 20 minutes". Honestly, I think the woman needed a "plastectomy"---thats where they cut hole in your stomach and insert a piece of plastic, so she could see where she was going. She had her head so far up her ass, she needed "help" being able to see. Would you come back? I booked a haircut on a whim after months of dealing with tangly, dead, dry ends from bleaching. I recently dyed it black and just wanted that dead stuff gone! I booked a last minute appointment with Marilyn Mertz, and she was exactly what I needed. Fast and efficient, just chatty enough, and gave me a great head massage at the shampoo bowl. One thing I will say here - while I have relatively short hair now, I had long hair for a very long time and have spent thousands of dollars in my lifetime on Brazilian blowouts. Marilyn does the absolute best blowout I've ever seen. Her technique is FLAWLESS and I am so glad I booked an appointment. She made my hair healthy again, and gave me an amazing blowout! 10/10 would recommend. She's also an amazing colorist, too. Go see Marilyn at Scarlet! You won't regret it. read more

I went to scarlet salon with Classpass and was so surprisingly satisfied! I got paired with Harmony and she basically gave me exactly what I wanted with pictures of a 90s style layered cut and blowout but on my thicker Asian hair. I was worried because some stylists don't quite know how to handle the texture and thickness of my hair but she did a great job with it! She was conservative on the amount of length she took off initially to just double check it wouldn't be too much and she happily cut off more when we agreed to go shorter with the length. I made a hair cut and color appointment with Annie by calling the salon directly. Clearly they didn't check with the stylist and must have booked her when she was not available since they called and cancelled on me on the day of the appointment. Normally I would give them the benefit of doubt but their system kept asking me to confirm the appointment, daily for 4 days out which I found odd as this has not happened with previous appointments (normally get these reminders two days out) and the normal cancellation timeline without penalty is 48 hrs. They clearly screwed up the booking and was hoping I would need to cancel so they could charge me the cancellation fee vs having to call me and cancel day of. I intentionally booked a weekend appointment so calling me last minute with an offer for a Tuesday appointment is just inconsiderate. read more

I started going here after looking for a place to fix a bad coloring job that another salon had done. I worked with Elle and she's really great!! This review is not about her, though. The last time I went in there I just wanted my hair trimmed. No color, no tricky hair texture or style, no fringe, even. These people, for cutting literally ONE INCH of hair (not even a perfectly straight blunt cut, mind you) charged me $75+20%tip!!! $75 FKING DOLLARS TO TRIM ONE INCH OF HAIR. I was ~10 mins late to my appt so she didn't have time to curl my hair, either. That ones on me, but still. Damn. You'd think for $75 FKING DOLLARS they could have one of the gals chilling in their chairs on either side of me come through to give a girl a quick curl. Y'know? This place is fine if you need professional help for something, but I would say it should be avoided for anything else. $75 PLUS TIP TO TRIM ONE INCH OF HAIR, PEOPLE. What is this madness??? I always come to her with an idea of what style and cut I want and she's able to read my mind and make the best suggestions. I have had both long and short haircuts with her and each time it has been the best haircut I've ever gotten. She also does the best beach wave hair style, just the right amount of curl, so effortlessly glam. She taught me how to style my hair so I can recreate it at home. When I followed her to Scarlet Salon, she honored Decos Salon pricing without me asking. I just thought this was sweet, thoughtful, and the cherry on top. Scarlet Salon has the cutest interior design and has complementary coffee and tea. The staff is kind and helpful. They also carry the best hair products. Cons: I was nervous from the beginning of my haircut due to the lack of questions and desire to understand what I wanted even though I showed specific pictures. I took my mom and my partner's mom to get their make-up done, and my hair and make-up done for my 10-year anniversary celebration. Charlee did my hair-- I wanted beach wave, natural curls--and she was wonderful! I was nervous getting my hair professionally done (I rarely do it, except for bridesmaid hair) but she put me at ease, and I had fun! She was easy to talk to, and of course I loved my hair!! Marissa did our make-up, and I could tell our moms had fun spending time with her too. I had a reference photo for her, and she nailed the bronzey, gold tones look I wanted. Back in mid-March 2017 I started seeing Jessica "Oz" Gallegos to start my journey of "Going Gray". I found Oz by doing a web search on best colorist and her name popped up, I called the salon, went in to see her for a consultation and she let me know it would take time but she could do it. Challenge accepted! I wanted to share my transition with you to show you how AHHH-MAZING Oz is. This entire process took me (with processed (dye on it), not naked hair) from mid-March to late August=5 1/2 months. I would go in for deep conditioning treatments every 2-4 weeks and then bleaching every 6-8 weeks. My hair has grown so quickly with regular trims, barely any breakage (thank God for this deep conditioning treatments, they saved my hair with all the bleaching). I tried hard to follow Oz's instruction of minimal heat, less washing and a whole lot of TLC. This woman is phenomenal and she has skills, I couldn't be happier with all she has done to make me feel beautiful, she gave me what I wanted and exceeded my expectation. I initially had someone in line to do my hair for my wedding (not from Scarlet) who completely stopped responding leaving me high & dry 3 weeks before the wedding. Desperate, I contacted a bunch of salons stating what I was looking for and the date. 1/2 of the places didn't get back to me, 1/4 simply couldn't because of the early morning I needed and the short notice... then there was Scarlet Salon. Wow. I'm so impressed. They were great with communication - very prompt. I am picky, picky, picky when it comes to my hair. It's a little embarrassing to say that I'm the kind of client who will see a stylist one time, won't get what I'm thought I wanted, and will quietly disappear into the wild blue yonder, never to be heard from again. I've slinked off so many times with a brassy balayage or a butchered bang and gone home to cry in my cereal. Not so with Oz. To steal a quote from Last of the Mohicans, Oz, wherever you go, I'll find you! Ok, that's a little creepy, but sort of the truth. I started seeing her about a year ago and would follow her anywhere! She took me from a self-inflicted, box color disaster that left me looking a bit like a trailer park beauty queen, to a beautiful natural brown which perfectly compliments me and my lifestyle while camouflaging persistent grey. More royal princess than royal mess. Oz is a true color master and her cuts are beautiful too. Oz's new location at Scarlet is pretty super too. I love that the salon is near downtown and the Highlands. It's a really pretty place and whoever does the decor has amazing style, but most of all I just love Oz. Considering I'd follow her to Mars if she went there, it's nice that she's a little closer to home. Oz's compadre stylist transplant from their former "salon that shall not be named," Cristina, is equally as talented. Though Cristina has only curled my hair (and they were some shnazzy curls), I've watched her work on other clients many times and their hair always looks badass! My nail girl even commented on how bad it looked without me telling her I had my hair done. On top of that, to save time she gave me chunky blonde highlights that do not look natural at all. Left the salon after sundown thinking "ok this color looks pretty good" and woke up this morning to the streakiest, chunkiest, most poorly done "highlights and balayage" I've ever had. Made an appt after all the rave reviews. Thuy was most reviewed on here so I attempted to book with her. Her schedule was booked so I settled with another stylist. The day of my appt they called and said they were rebooking me with someone else. I didn't refuse because I was going on a trip the next day and needed my hair did! I ended up with JC and I couldn't have been happier! I'm a pretty easy customer. I have an idea of what I want and if you're the expert, I expect you to know what you do and apply that to my hair. Don't pull out the hair swatches because I don't know what that will look like or what those colors are going to look like. I was a bit skeptic, as I always am with new stylists but JC truly is a pro. I told JC what I wanted and without even looking at colors or picture she put together my hair perfectly. The previous salon butchered my hair pretty good, so she told me she would fix the choppiness and just make all the colors melt. She's also super sweet and so great to talk to. I have naturally ashy blonde hair, and was hoping for something to brighten up those brass/ash tones. I've been here twice now, once a few years ago and once very recently. Both were disappointing. In terms of the salon itself, it doesn't bode the same experience as other salons where they are attentive to your needs and provide more of an "experience". I wasn't offered anything to drink for example and had to ask for water. They have vending machines in their walkway area if you want something else to drink. Both times I've been here, the stylists weren't very inquisitive and offered no conversation. It seemed more like just another day at the office. They lacked any enthusiasm and generally seemed to not care for their work. They just seemed bored on both occasions I've been there. I suspect what I wanted wasn't something super fun, just brightening up my blondes please and add some more dimension! It's what I see blasted all over their Instagram accounts. Maybe they're just sick of it. Still, I'm paying several hundred dollars to get this done, the least you could do is try. I left with hair that looked basically like what I went in there with, just more brassy than before. I could smell the chemicals when I got home, as the stylist didn't even bother to rinse it out very well. There are paintbrush marks near my root line. Props for getting close to my roots (I had originally gone in for highlights but she decided to do balayage instead), minus some points for making it obvious. It seems some people have great luck going here, but maybe I've just had some stylists who may have lost their zest. For $200+, I feel like I just made a donation to someone else instead of spending some time and money on myself in an effort to feel good. Back to blah. read more
