Invited here for a dinner, this was an occasion to celebrate friendship for nine of us. The decor is much like a house, and internally dim. Hard to tell if it was clean or not, but from the general surroundings, it seemed like it was appropriate. The waiters served us swiftly and had a good sense of humor, but they commit a faux pas - into flat water they pour sparkling, someone wasn't paying attention. And mis-served an appetizer. For a price fixe dinner, I expect better attention to detail. The pre-appetizer of a shrimp sauteed and placed upon a few thinly-sliced mushrooms was impressive, and better than the appetizer of seared tuna that I had. The penne or mushroom pasta was a much better, more filling appetizer. The main course - we tried the duck (excellent, although foie gras still? I shudder at the manner in which it is produced), the sea bass (exactly as expected, although nothing special), the filet mignon (again, nothing special, but done exactly as expected), the short ribs (mixed reaction here from the group - - spicing wasn't exactly as described, I think, was a bit too salty), and the lamb chops were good, but the fact everything was to be topped by fresh grated pepper made things somewhat taste all alike. A decent wine selection, and a regular tea at the end of the meal. The petit fours were acceptable (chilled), and the dessert was the best part - a complementary pineapple sorbet, followed by the tiramisu with coffee gelato (the best), and banana caramelized tart with caramel gelato and caramel drizzled all over (excellent). The napolean fruit with wafers in heavy cream - well, okay, but not really satisfactory for fruit, more just a cream and wafer dish. Overall, not bad, but there are better restaurants to be had, with greater selection. A nice place for the old people to come back for dish after dish of the same -- nothing but classic food served in a relatively prompt and simple manner. read more

The place is really charming and feels like you're in a restaurant in Italy! Our waiter, Dan, was outstanding and went above and beyond to make my birthday truly fabulous! Food was delicious and drinks were great! The chairs were comfortable. That's sometimes an issue for me, but not here! The combination of delicious food and a great staff made this a very memorable birthday! Again, special thanks to Dan!!! I'd definitely ask for him when we return! read more

What a fabulous restaurant. The atmosphere is very nice. The food is superb and I recommend the pork chop dish. The service is great, Alex is always attentive along with the rest of the staff, it's all in the details my friends and with Isabela ensuring that all runs smooth, you could not hope for a better dining experience. Scalini Fideli is a keeper! read more

Excellent food and choices in the courses that make up the pre fixed. Definitely one of the top restaurants in New Jersey for dining.

Went there for a lunch on a wednesday afternoon. I would characterize this as a solid, but not exceptional restaurant that didn't quite live up to its hype. Ambiance: Step into an old gangster movie, sit down at the italian restaurant and be very worried that someone is going to whack you. That essentially describes the ambience at Scalini Fedeli in Chatham. The day was bright, the inside was dark. Windows had 1970s style curtains which were drawn, thus making the place look darker than it should of on such a gorgeous day. To add to the experience there were waiters in their tuxedos in a "classic" manner. Food: we both opted for the "beet and goat cheese salad" as a starter. What came out instead was a salad with plenty of greens, some sundried tomoatoes, and a few, select pieces of beet. The Goat cheese was balanced for the amount of beet, but my point is that the salad was misadvertised. The salad was fine, definitely 3 star material, but it wasn't remarkable in any sense of the word. We also both opted for the duck. I have read many reviews about the duck and was waiting to be wowed. Really waiting to be wowed. I nervously ordered it medium rare as I prefer it that way (recommendation was to order it medium). However what came out... Duck was medium well. The sauce that accompanied it was a bit sweet and it was served on asparagus that was prepared well. On the whole it was....fine. just fine. Nothing super memorable, nothing enchanting. Just fine. The coffee that came after was standard drip coffee that was less than fine. So for an establishment that is regarded as 'one of the best in NJ' and 'Chatham's finest', I left massively underwhelmed. If it is good food that you are after and it is Italian, then do yourself and your pocket book a favor and head over to Marie's (see yelp reviews, its in chatham and now one in Madison). If you want a long drawn out meal with table service, then find somewhere else. Perhaps Serenade - that's going to be one of the next ones that I try. Oh yeah, one other thing. I called them a few months back to inquire about whether they could prepare something special for my vegan wife. The answer was a very polite "No". So this is not a place for Vegans. At all. Sorry for the lack of pics. I was on a business lunch. read more

I will go on record saying that Scalini Fedeli has one of the bets pork chops I have ever had the pleasure of devouring. Excellent wine selection and libations. If you leave this establishment hungry, you seriously did something wrong read more

Absolute heaven. Great interior, amazing food. Impeccable service. Go, go and go again!

We used to like Scalini Fedeli for it's Italian food. So much we brought our visiting family for a meal one night. They liked it and bought a $300 gift card for us as a thank you for staying with us. When we went to use it we looked high and low and could not find it. We had a picture of it with the assigned number. If the gift certificate could be cancelled or stopped and reissued (like a check)we thought that could be a solution. We called Scalini Fedeli and spoke to Isabella and she had to speak to the owner, Michael Cetrulo, about canceling the existing certificate and reissue. She said she would call back. Waited one week, then two weeks. Then had to chase to get an answer. Finally she said Michael would not replace the certificate as they do not have the bookkeeping to keep track of the use of gift certificates. I know of multiple small businesses who easily record issuance and use of gift certificates.... Especially since we provided them with the number, date and amount of the certificate. Not difficult bookkeeping. Three hundred dollars is not a small amount. Unearned profit. It would break our brothers heart to know what happened. We will spare him. Needless to say we will not be repeat customers as in the past and we will make sure our friends and neighbors are aware of this unkind, unbusinesslike and unfriendly practice. Hidden gem, consistently outstanding food. Easily the best restaurant in Chatham. Excellent spot for special occasions or business meals.

Enjoyed a phenomenal anniversary dinner here this evening. Everything was superb from start to finish. Especially loved the short ribs, banana tart, and espresso martini. Worth every penny. read more

HUGH DISAPPOINTMENT. The large portions cannot make up for the overly rich over-complicated dishes that make this place a "bust". SALMON entree, rich on its own, is doused in a heavy rich sauce that clouds the taste of the salmon. MUSHROOM RAVIOLI appetizer, is filled with a very rich mushroom mixture but then layered with the heavy rich sauce that made one fill up very quickly. Additionally, the pasta itself was under-cooked and less than al dente. A CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE, turned out to be nothing more than then over used desert of a warm chocolate lava cake and resembled nothing of a soufflé. It absolutely did not warrant the "Supplemental" charge. The underlying message here is "Kiss" read more

The food is ok...The service is quite unprofessional the potato crusted snapper was so tiny we were shocked. Sent it back. The waiter didn't even apologize. Nothing there was exceptional. The old scalini extras were cut. It's too bad we used to go there very often. We won't be going back. read more

Everything I have to say here is filtered through this prism: It costs about $150 (all in) per person for a normal dinner here. Therefore, EVERYTHING should be superb. In a nutshell, I suggest that, if you care about good food and friendly professional service, avoid this place. It is noisy, the decor is strange, the service staff is bruskly efficient but not solicitous, the primi are tasty, but the secondi are borderline awful, the deserts are adequate, the wine list is priced at 3X retail. Frankly, I just don't understand how they stay in business. read more

Spectacular restaurant. All the food we had was absolutely delicious. Started off with a crepe with crab and corn and a mozzarella, tomato and arugula salad. Had the salmon with beets and spinach and the braised pork shank. Will definitely be returning back. Everyone was super helpful and made for a great birthday dinner for my boyfriend. read more

Really good meal and a good value. The price fixe dinner is $59 a head. There are some special dishes you can add, but we stayed on menu and it was delicious. We had the veal Milanese and another veal scaloppini as our entrees. They have a full bar as well which is nice, but also hiked up the bill. Al in all, great "finer" dining experience. read more

Top notch Everything from start to finish. Apps were AMAZING! Wild mushroom ravioli was as delicious as it gets! My wife had butternut ravioli and that was awesome too! Entrees were great portions and also very tasty! Staff were very attentive as well. A bit pricey but who cares when the food and service are so good! read more

Whoa! Food is delicate and thoughtfully prepared. Every bite is pure bliss. Ambiance is old country Italian Mediterranean and its nestled inside an old house that was completely gutted so all tables are placed within one room. Being a new resident of NJ I'll be frequenting this place quiet often. Very hard to find food served to perfection. The ravioli with egg yolk in a truffle oil sauce was so rich and savory it's the reason I'll be back time and time again. Well executed dishes with a stunning menu. read more

A great experience! Excellent service! I've been here three times. It's a converted house and a little romantic inside. While I don't remember what I ordered the first time, the following two times I enjoyed duck breast with foie gras and endive. Delicious, but I couldn't finish all the foie gras. I was extremely happy with the entire meal each time. It's great for a date. read more

I've been back to SF and I'm downgrading my review from 5 stars to 2. The food is definitely not as good as it once was. The food I would give 3 stars. The service? Minus 2! Took my parents there for their 50th anniversary on a Saturday night. Out waiter seemed bored and disinterested but that didn't bother me so much. We ordered our food and three of us got the red snapper special which sounded really good but was in reality was just ok. My brother got the "Maine" lobster which in reality was a spiny lobster. There is a BIG difference between the Maine and the spiny lobster. Only thing they have in common is the price SF charged. Bad start. Fast forward to the service: Took an unusually long time for the main entree to come out but that was ok since we were enjoying ourselves. Then came our desserts which were uninspired. As soon as we paid (and while we were finishing our coffee) our bored waiter felt the need to "remind" us that people were waiting for our table. Note to management: you want people to leave early then you better get their food out quickly. Then I go to leave like they wanted but there's nobody manning the coat check room. No big deal. I took my coat off the hanger at home, pretty sure I can do it here. Don't need any special training or anything. As I'm getting my coat the woman comes behind me and my father yelling at us that she was in the bathroom and that everybody needs to have more patience. We're like are we getting yelled at by he coat check lady? Note to aspiring coat check people: a simple "I apologize I had to step away for a minute" will do just fine. So our ride home from my parent's 50th anniversary dinner was dominated by talk of how we were treated instead of the dinner and stories we shared. At this price point I expect more from the food and MUCH more from the staff. For these prices you can do better. read more

I rarely write a review for a place I have only been to once, but this restaurant totally deserves it. I simply cannot wait to return. It's BYOB (FYI - they charge a cork fee on Saturdays) and prix fixe. When I think prix fixe, I think, "Great, four entree options, one of which I will only kind of like, if any." Not here. OMG, there are like 15 options for appetizers and entrees. Not to mention, they serve an amuse-bouche, sorbet and dessert (of your choice) throughout the meal. It's about $54 a person. Everything I ate here was absolutely fabulous. I had the most amazing crabmeat appetizer and delicious shrimp and lobster entree. My husband ordered a pork chop for the entree and it was incredible. I'd never think to order that because it's not one of my go-to dishes but I would do it in a heartbeat at Scalini Fedeli. The service was top notch - every attention to detail was made from the presentation of the food to making sure our glass was always full. A great place for a romantic dinner, meeting up with old friends, or special occasion. A plus - they take OpenTable reservations. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for many years and I have to say this visit was disappointing. As usual, the food was excellent....I had the pear & gorgonzola ravioli app and short ribs for an entree...both were exceptional. My wife had the Ecuadorian shrimp and mushroom ravioli for her entree.....excellent. However, the service was way below par. The waiter disappeared after we ordered our dinner and we basically never saw him again...having to wave down the maitre d' to get our check. Our coffee showed up as we were leaving and they played a bit of a scam on the wine that I ordered...too long a story, but definately a shady practice. Update on the story regarding the wine: I asked for a recommendation on a Zinfandel and the waiter showed me two...a$55 bottle and $75 bottle...I ordered the $55 bottle and did not notice that they brought me the $75 bottle....they were very similar, year etc. I was charged $69 and when I asked about it they pointed out that I had drank the $75 bottle....but they only charged me $69..."don't worry about it" they said....a little bait and switch. Also, the bill comes hand written which conveniently makes it hard to read. I have since called and complained and they offered a $75 gift card. Not a bad gesture, but I've lost some trust. read more

I do not even know where to begin with this one. You pull into the parking lot of six figure cars. The hostess is very nice, and I was seated promptly. The menu is actaully very expansive, and I think VERY reasonably priced for what you get. the Prix Fix is 54 dollars, and that includes a 1 app, 1 dinner and a desert. As usual, some of the more expensive items are a suppliment of a few dollars. Ok so now onto the food. this is far and away the best food I have had in NJ. It is better then the chefs other restaurant up the road in Madison, Il Mondo Vecchio, which has always been talked about as one of the best around. You start off with a chefs appetizer which was one large shrimp over mushrooms in a delicious sauce. The shrimp was cooked perfect and delicious, the mushrooms was also excellent. I was with 1 other person, so we split 2 of the apps. One was ravioli stuffed with mushrooms and black truffle. It was a very large app, way bigger then i expected, and actually pretty filling. It was DELICIOUS. The 2nd app was also pretty big, and was a seafood ragout. a lobster tail, large shrimp, and 12 muscles in a broth. Everything on the dish was very high quality and cooked to perfection. for dinner I had the short ribs. I usually never get them because they are always cooked poorly or very fatty. I thought this would be the perfect test for this place, and it passed with flying colors. it was cooked great, and they were trimmed so there was barely any fat on them. They were over mashed potatoes and in a wine sauce that i thought complimented it all very well. The other dinner at the table was bacon wrapped scallops. 3 large scallops came out on the plate, seared on the outside and rare on the inside. they were out of this world good. the deserts were equally fantastic and fresh. a banana tart and philo dough gnache finished the meal off, with a glass of 20 year port wine. I did not have any wine, but they had an expansive menu. you can not find a better value in NJ then this place. it is obviously not cheap, but you will leave full and satisfied. read more

When I talk to people about the best Italian food they had, this place always comes up. Apparently I must have been to this place on an off night. Yeah, the ambiance is nice and the staff is friendly but when it comes to the food, I am not impressed. I had the Risotto with mushrooms and petit peas from Provence with crispy zucchini AND Braised short ribs of beef with a cherry pepper and port wine glaze and twice fried potatoes. I wasn't all that impressed. The food did have good flavor but the dishes were small. I mean this place has been so hyped up to be a "can't miss" meal but after spending nearly $250 for 2 people it's a "I won't be coming back anytime soon" meal. I must say the service was exceptional but I have had better Italian meals elsewhere and it's really not worth the money. I guess I am alone when it comes to not really being "crazy" for this place. read more

We were a large party of 12 for a special occasion. Even though we reserved well in advance, they weren't able to arrange one table for us, so they sat us awkwardly at two tables in the middle of the room. There was an unaccommodating vibe about the place - waiters were very gruff, they almost seemed angry, and no one greeted us when we arrived or said good night when we left. Weird. A couple of people in our party weren't served what they ordered and couldn't get the waiter's attention to try to deal with it. They just didn't seem to care. The food isn't good enough to justify their Goodfellow's "you're lucky to be here" attitude. Except for my "simple tuscan white bean soup" almost everything on the menu is wrapped in prosciutto with cheese melted on top and floating in butter. I chose the entree that sounded least laden with 'stuff' (lightly pounded parmigiano crusted rib pork chop with a prosciutto and tricolor salad in a garlic and sage jus) but it was covered in a mushy breading that was soaked with butter. Not my type of food. The two stars are for the nice lighting. read more

Visited the restaurant last weekend for my birthday and whoa was this place amazing. We were a bit on the younger side compared to most of the clientele but the food makes you forget this rather quickly. This was honestly one of the best meals I've enjoyed in a long time. Everything was spot on amazing including the egg yolk ravioli with delicious ricotta and my wife's risotto. This was an amazing risotto! Entrees were an 18 oz pork chop; yes this thing was massive but I did finish my entire meal and my wife ordered a chicken. Both were absolutely fantastic. For desert they bring out pre deserts to get you ready for the actual desert. I'm not kidding. This is definitely not an every day option; but you certainly get your money's worth here. They have an extensive wine list (this is not a BYO) and the menu itself is huge and pre-fix for 59 a person with a couple supplemented priced items for a few dollars more. My only negative gripe here is the menu looks amazing and sadly we didn't get to try more. We'll be back here for sure. FYI; they serve alcohol but there is no actual sit down bar here. I heard rumors that during the week you can BYO for a charge but I would call the restaurant first to confirm. read more

If you told me that this place could care less about its Yelp reviews ---I'd tell you, "and rightfully so". That's how good it is. It's not a place you go to eat a meal. There are millions of places for that. No. It's a restaurant you go to when you want to enjoy your "experience". From the minute you sit down, till. The moment you leave, you are waited on like you are important. The ambiance and decor, the vibe of the room, (not to mention you're dining with Chatham and short hills socialites) just gives you a feeling like you are important. At least that's the way it makes this Brooklyn boy feel . I can get into all kinds of details about the menu, but I won't. The other reviews have gone to full length to do so. All I will say is this, ---there isn't one item on the entire menu that isn't phenomenal. You know when you go to a restaurant , and you fight with yourself about what to get---yeah, well that doesn't matter here, cause even if you pick the wrong thing, it's still gonna be just as good. For that reason alone, it makes the place irresistible to say "next time I come back, I gotta try that". We met Mark, the Maître D tonight. That guy knows what he's doing. Professional, yet still not full of himself--or the place's reputation. Just a regular guy who made us feel special. That's the experience I'm talking about. I can go on and on. But I won't. But what I will do, is go to bed, thinking about what I will have the next time I visit. Ohh and I will have to sleep on my back cause i'm way too stuffed to turn over. read more

Went there with some work colleagues and was greeted by a very friendly staff. We ordered some drinks "up" but they came out on the rocks but that was no big deal. I ordered the scallop carpaccio which was tasty and we shared the duck confit ravioli with wild boar sauce. The ravioli just tasted like thick dense pasta and I couldn't pick the flavors out of the sauce to save my life. For dinner, we did the veal chop and some lamb chops. The veal chop was undercooked but the sauce was delicious and the lamb chops were very tasty. Lots of food and since we added on some things, our bill came out to $299 for 3 people. I'm glad I went but it won't be my number one pick next time. read more

Amuse bouche with shrimp, mushrooms and cream sauce was excellent and started the meal off very well. Egg yolk ravioli was one of the best things I've ever eaten. The truffle flavor took it over the top. The short ribs were very good, but not in the same league as the ravioli first course. It has a sweetness and I prefer my meats savory. Also, I would recommend that they do not include the piece of hot pepper with it. I had one bite and it overpowered everything and killed the wine pairing. Creme brulee was outstanding. One of the best creme brulee's I've ever had. Atmosphere was very festive, but a bit loud. I don't mind the high sound level, but some people do. Service was adequate, but not anything to write home about. I liked the fixed price. At $54 it's definitely worthwhile. They have a $25 corkage fee if you'd like to bring your own wine. read more

I took my husband there tonight for his birthday and it will be one to remember! Valet parking was right next to the entrance. The menu is a price fix and rotates dishes seasonally. There were probably 15 - 20 diverse choice for both the primi and secondi platte. Primi had everything from salads, to scallops, to pastas; secondi had fish, lamb, and meat. The whole menu is price fix, $54 per person but that includes a common amuse bouche, demitase, and dessert. By the time we added a half bottle of wine, two glasses of dessert wine, and two coffees, our bill was $180 before tip. Honestly, for the amount and quality of food, it is a reasonable price. I was confused and thought that it was BYO. You can BYO ($25 corking fee on Saturdays) but they have a full bar as well. After we ordered, we were served a all amuse bouche/appitizer, shrimp and wild mushrooms is a fennel sauce. After we finished, it was cleared and our primis came. My husband had a small canaloni and I had am wonderful butternut squash ravioli, one of my favorite dishes anywhere. The second cousin my husband has tender lamb chops, but I got the show stopping potato crusted red snapper. It had mushrooms and a red wine sauce and we both agreed it was our favorite. Then we had a palate cleanser (coconut sorbet with pineapple), demitase, and chose our desserts. My husband got the seasonal banana tart, and I had the chocolate soufflé: both were amazing. Overall, we found that the meal was well paced. We never sat without food for very long. The portions were well sized: neither too big or too little. The staff was attentive but not looming. Overall, this was one of the best meals we've had in a while and I'm already thinking of excused to go back! read more

We went here for Chrstmas Eve dinner "almost" against my gutt feeling. I am always skeptical of going somewhere highly rated on a holiday. Scalini broke my fears from the moment we pulled up at the Valet stand. We were promptly greeted by a professional young man who was very well spoken and appeared happy we were there. Once we walked inside we were promptly seated in a beautiful dining room with old world touches but tastefully, modern updates. We had a glass of champagne each and ordered a bottle of wine at this time. It was a Sangiovese for $51. Both were excellent. This is not your typical Prixe-fix menu with limited choices. The regular menu was plentiful and there was an additional print out of choices along with the waiters specials for the holiday. I ordered a shrimp special and the red snapper while my wife ordered a white bean soup and the lobster tail special from the holiday specials. I had the banana tart dessert. Everything was AMAZING! The service was spot on, the food portions were prefect and very tasty. The total bill was $238 without tip which was to be expected but I feel that $54 Prixe-fix was very reasonable for the options. By no means is this a "cheap" night out but it was completely worth it. I would hands down put it up against the likes of Highlawn Pavilion, or The Manor, Capriccio and many other greats in the same aprt of the state. Give it a try, you wont be disappointed. read more

Best italian in the area. It's definitely a special occasion type place but is not as pricey as you would think bc u get soooo much food as part of the fixed price menu. I really do not understand why half of the reviews are rating this place poorly. It is suppose to be an upscale restaurant, you should know that when walking into the place. The food is rich in flavor, and quite possibly one of the best italian restaurants in the state of NJ. This is a high end italian restaurant, which offers some of the most flavorful cuisine. When ordering off the price fixe you have the opportunity to choose your starter, entree and dessert. I highly recommend the braised short ribs, they are the best i've had! Yes their wines are expensive, yes their food is expensive, but this is why the restaurant is known for being high class, high quality and known for their great service. This is a special occasion place, it's romantic. Just be sure to make reservations in advance! read more

The food was great, but when I entered with a big smile the lady in the front looked me up and down and was not friendly at all. My partner brought it up to me randomly a few days later, telling me he thought we had slow service and unfriendly hospitality due to me being a POC. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, as it was valentine's day and I know service was busy, but if I am being honest with myself, I got that impression as well. My suggestion is that you have the older lady working in the front work on her manners. read more
