The staff seemed to have tunnel vision, only focusing on what was directly in front of them while ignoring everyone else. After standing there for quite a while, I finally had to ask about my order. Instead of it being ready like it should have been, they hadn't even started making it. I ended up waiting over 30 minutes in line for something that was ordered hours earlier. What made it worse was when the mistake became obvious, no one apologized or acknowledged the inconvenience. The staff acted like it was no big deal and showed zero professionalism or accountability. I don't come into the city often, but when I do I like to try new places. Sadly, this experience was disappointing and the customer service was extremely poor. I would honestly say save your time and money and go somewhere that actually values their customers--especially in this economy. Time is money, and money is time. If a restaurant doesn't respect your time, they're definitely not going to respect your money. As for the food, it was very basic and lacked flavor. They were also very stingy with the sauce, which made the bowl even more dry and underwhelming. Overall, between the poor service, long wait despite ordering hours ahead, lack of accountability from staff, and mediocre food, this place was a big disappointment. I will not be coming back. He said no discounts and it is a 3% fee to use your credit card. The Panang Curry was amazing. Lots of flavor. Perfectly cooked rice and they go together so well. And they wrapped the container in plastic wrap in addition to the cover being on it. Love when restaurants do that as it decreases the chance of spills. Founded by chef/owner Khwanta Osanai who learned how to cook at age seven, she previously owned a Thai eatery in Chula Vista. With a purposefully-crafted menu made up of authentic dishes and street food from her native Northern Thailand, everything is made from scratch and fresh ingredients. Rather than a numbered scale for spiciness as many Thai eateries, each dish is spiced as it would be traditionally. I loved Thai food, so would this place on Soi 30th hit the spot and bring me back for more!? PURCHASE(S) Thai Iced Tea 16floz Cup ($5.95): Sadly, no boba, but this was a refreshing drink (not too sweet) while I waited for my food to be ready. Crispy Tofu ($9.95): Although these always reminded me of that facial sponge women use to apply makeup on their face and around the eyes, these crispy fat spongy triangle pieces were tasty and were made even better with the crushed nuts and spicy sweet dipping sauce. Hot Spicy Basil Extra Spicy + Fish ($14.95 + $4.00): Sauteed with holy basil, Thai chilis, onions, green peppers, garlic, and purportedly served over rice and a fried egg (these items didn't come with it), this was a decent portion size with an insane spice level ( wasn't right for a couple of days, if you knew what I meant!), big tender fish pieces, and the various fresh crispy vegetables. I liked the various artwork that hung on the walls., but surprisingly little to no actual Thai merchandise or relics. Plenty of natural lighting entered through the front wall windows and doors while a mix of recessed and various hung electric ceiling lights covered the rest. I believed there was at least one TV behind the order counter while classic rock & roll music played in the background. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL I really enjoyed my first Thai food experience in the North Park neighborhood at Soi 30th. Yes, the spices tore me up, but the food was still very tasty, the prices were comparable, the portion sizes were generally very good, the atmosphere was more clean and modern than I would've liked, and the service was straightforward and efficient. When we asked about the the new ordering procedure, our female server stated that "We were tired of having to explain all of the details/ingredients of the different dishes." Well, aren't those details usually listed on the menus? Besides, now the servers get to spend their time assisting customers in using the Ipads. On two separate occasions, my dining companion and I found a small bone in one of the sushi rolls. This last time, when we mentioned it, we were given no compensation, and not really even much of an apology; our female server just sort of shook it off. I'm thinking she perhaps knew the restaurant would be closing soon, so why bother? Two things that really stick in my craw, during our most recent visit, we noticed that sake was taken off the beverage menu altogether (the sake-beer special has been long-gone for 5+ years now, anyway), and the restaurant is now charging an additional $2 for avocado on any roll. Personally, I would rather see a slight increase in prices on ALL the rolls, to help compensate for this petty adjustment, rather than a blatant price increase on rolls that contain avocado, when many rolls contain it, anyway. RK is scheduled to reopen in October, and although Sushi Roll Land on Fifth in Hillcrest has been our go-to for a few years, we might consider giving RK another try, in hopes that there have been some big changes. 1) Please bring back actual servers to take our order, and not force us to rely on Ipads, 2) bring back sake (and sake-bomber drink specials perhaps?), and 3) take a little more time filleting the fresh fish, to ensure there are no bones to ruin my appetite.
