I'm gonna be honest, I'm not usually a big ahi fan and so I tend to avoid going to poke places that don't have salmon as an option but this place has definitely changed my mindset. I came in on a Saturday afternoon and ordered the poke plate with half spicy ahi and shoyu ahi. The price was a bit steep at around $25 but when I tell you, I completely demolished it within 10 mins... I got it to go but it smelled so good that I had to eat it in my car still parked right in front LOL. The ahi doesn't have an irony taste like other ahi I've tried from some other places. Solid four stars at a five and I give this rating because the flavors were on point and the Cooley chicken and pork. We're all cooked very well. Spam musubi was just OK and felt like you could definitely make it at home versus the 4.50 you'd spend. Service OK nothing outstanding because it felt more like a café than a restaurant and it makes sense because there was no inside seating. They have outdoor seating which was nice. We usually order the tofu katsu, spam mysabi, teriyaki beef, garlic chicken, and crab salmon dynamite. The best thing by far is the crab salmon dynamite. I'm not a fan of the macaroni salad. Right when I entered, I was warmly greeted by the workers. I decided to pick a combo plate, which comes with a protein, and your choice of two sides (rice, mac salad, or pickled cucumber salad). For my protein, I decided on garlic chicken ($15) because it's deep fried and comes with mirin sauce. This was my favorite protein out of all the ones that I tried. I also got the Kalei's Plate which allows you to pick two proteins (excluding loco loco and tofu katsu) so I went with teriyaki beef and kalua pork. In order of my personal favorites for the proteins: 1. Garlic chicken 2. Kalua pork 3. Teriyaki beef For the sides: 1. Mac salad 2. Rice 3. Cucumber salad One of the times that I ordered at Kalei's, I got to meet the owner. She was so warm and welcoming, and really left such a great lasting impression on me. Definitely a favorite for Hawaiian food for me! It's a cute and intimate little place to enjoy some delicious food. The service is usually cheerful & friendly! Never a complaint and I've always been served with a smile. As far as the food goes, I've eaten here a few times, trying the loco moco and kalua pork. The rice is always cooked just right - not too dry but not too wet to the point of being mushy. The egg still has runny yolk and the patty has good flavor for the loco moco. I was craving Hawaiin food and in the North County area, so I swung by this wonderful Hawaiin establishment. This is a newer eatery and the ownership really strives to bring the Hawaiin hospitality and culture to San Diego. I would say they succeeded! Huli chicken was dry, they must have cooked it for a long time because it's dark meat chicken. Kalua pork was very salty. Rice was good. Mac was good. Huli huli sauce was a weird blend of flavors, leaning more towards American BBQ sauce than Hawaiian BBQ. This was an unpleasant surprise as someone in our group is sensitive to nightshades and possibly will be dealing with some side effects. I got the 2-item with 2 sides combo. For my proteins, I selected Garlic Chicken and Teriyaki Beef. I requested teriyaki sauce on the side because I don't want it to overpower the flavor of the meat. I was told that the meat is cooked in it, I said that's fine, but don't add extra on top. For the sides, I picked rice and mac salad. I asked for a water cup and was told that they don't have that but instead sold bottled water. So, I passed on a drink all together. I can't remember the last time I went to a restaurant, asked for a cup of tap water, and they said we don't have that here. The restaurant is small, has only 2 tables, and at each table there are only 2 chairs. They have some tables for you to sit and eat outside too. I ate my food at one of the tables inside. My order was ready less than 5 mins after I ordered. Like some other reviewer pointed out, the meat doesn't taste hot off the grill and the chicken doesn't taste freshly fried either. The rice was cooked well, and the mac salad was the best part. My combo WITHOUT a drink costed ~$25 after taxes. The food isn't bad, but it's not good enough for $25. They give you a lot of food, but the taste just isn't there. Not loving the meat because it didn't taste very premium, I brought it home hoping my wife would like it. She tried it and said it's too sweet for her liking. So neither one of us is going to eat the rest of the beef. Quantity over quality only makes sense if the food is good enough to finish, else it's just a waste of money and food. I was looking forward to trying this place out because of the high Yelp rating, however it did not live up to expectations. The problem is, I feel like this place is nickel and diming you. Another reviewer pointed out that there is a 3% credit card fee. Is that why my 2-item combo with no water cup is $25+?? I couldn't tell you because they never gave me a receipt. For $25, you can get way better food elsewhere. Here's a comparison. For dinner, I just paid $25 at Black Angus for a lobster tail, some steak, and 2 sides. Black Angus provided FREE bread and water. Hot pot at Ten Sec Noodles including tip and taxes is $20. A Cuban sandwich at Havana Grill after tip and taxes is ~$20. All of which tastes miles better. If you want Hawaiian food at a decent price, go to L&L. For $25, they're reaching close to AYCE prices. read more

Finally! Hawaiian dishes authentically prepared and flavored well. Went two days in a row! The cafe style shop has about 5 seats at the window bar to enjoy your food on site. The friendly young staff greeted me with a welcome and a smile as soon as I walked in. I explained it was my first visit and the young lady was happy to tell me about their menu. I got the two item plate. The garlic chicken was a surprise hit with me. Crispy fried chicken pieces in a sweet garlic brown sauce. The kalua park was as traditional as it gets and the furikaki rice has a somewhat mild sweetness which compliments all their dishes. The mac salad was a creamy unique blend of ingredients that also goes well with everything. They were sold out of the musubi for that day but I was offered to try a side of lumpia which was cooked perfectly. Crispy and light. A very enjoyable meal all around. I learned they make Poke plates on Saturday only, and typically sell out by 1pm. Lucky for me, that would be the next day . From the video being played, I could see that they prepared it the way I like it. Just simple traditional poke. No bowls, no salads, no fillers or a bunch of stuff other people try to get away with. Sesame oil, Ahi, onions and seaweed. The next day I returned to try their shoyu poke. I was not disappointed. Served with two scoops of the rice . A perfectly prepared dish. No complaints whatsoever. I was also lucky enough to get a spam musubi with pickled daikon radish still hot, which I ate while waiting for my poke. It was scrumptious and will try it that way when I make them at home. Washed it down with a cold can of Hawaiian Sun POG from their refrigerator. And took my poke home to enjoy next to my Hawaiian bamboo chimes. The local PQ gem serves San Diego with lots of aloha. Aside from supporting a local elementary school the food is ono (delicious). The Teri beef was nice and tender and perfectly seasoned. The mac salad was reminiscent of what my ohana would make back on the islands. The stand out item was the Tofu Musubi. At first, I thought it was chicken. A healthy alternative to the spam. The decor was very aloha, like one of Front Street in Lahaina, Maui. #mauinokaoi I was tempted to buy some aloha kine merch but I was in hurry. Next time. You can tell the chef's from Hawaii -- it shows. He brings the real, broke-da-mouth flavors right here to PQ with plate lunches that remind me of being out in the islands. Think L&L cuisine, but with more homemade flavor and balance that feels true to Hawaii. Everything's consistent, fresh, and made with good intention. When they drop their specials, that's when you really see the creativity and range. They started off as a catering company and still do catering, so definitely check them out for that too. We usually play it safe with tacos, so we were a little nervous about stepping outside everyone's comfort zone, but it ended up being a HUGE HIT!!   Everything was absolutely delicious!  The macaroni salad was the first thing to disappear. We should have ordered a large because people went back for seconds immediately and it was gone before I could get seconds haha. The sliders were incredibly flavorful and a personal favorite for me as they were easy to grab and eat while working the holiday party, the huli huli chicken and kalbi ribs were so tasty, and the vegetable lumpia were a crowd favorite too! The Chicken Katsu was crispy and delicious and the pork lumpia and cucumber salad were also very good!   People kept coming up to say how good the food was, and we were so happy we decided to try something different this year.   On top of that, working with them was easy and stress-free. Picked up lumpia and 2 protein combo plate with pickled cucumber and Mac salad as sides. We chose huli huli chicken and Kahlua pork. The chicken was very good. The pork is a little salty. Next time I will be getting double Mac salad because although the cucumbers added a little tank, the Mac salad was a little more special. Really good food! But i wish the spicy ahi poke that i ordered last time isn't that saucy overall 9/10

I ordered the teriyaki beef plate. Half of the beef was juicy and tender but the other half was overcooked a little. The staff is friendly and inside is clean. Rice was very good. Only reason I'm giving it 4outta5 is because half of the beef was dry. read more
