    a jar of sweet lemon

We were in Bend for a conference and decided to check out some shops. Ended up in the Old Mill District and found this spice shop because I love everything food related. The customer service was amazing! Super friendly staff! They had my 3-yo search for coins attached to cabinets/shelves through out the store and even had a small prize for him once we were done shipping. We for the black garlic salt and the Vietnamese sweet lemon curry. Both were delicious. I would say that I doubled the amount of curry spice recommended though. Thanks for being so nice to the kiddo!

I have always loved this store! The smell when you first walk in greets you as warmly as every single staff member inside the store. They have so many options - sweet to savory, global to local. The staff is so very knowledgeable! I asked a question on different types of cinnamon, the answer was thorough and incredibly helpful and my cinnamon spiced oatmeal is happy for it! In my opinion you are getting a better deal in this store for better quality spices than you're getting at the local stores. Recently I was in the local store after speaking with the home office to restore my "Black Friday" coupons from last year. I have to say, every single end of this interaction was the most positive experience! They were speedy, kind and just generally amazing! I'm especially going to call out Bobbi for being so helpful in store to help me meet my need! Times are hard these day, it can be hard to find the kindness that's out there... head to Savory Spice Shop, let them remind you that kindness is out there... and improve your spice cabinet while you're at it!

Savory Spice Shop opened today in the Old Mill Shops (next door to Ginger's Kitchenware). The aroma as you enter the shop is intoxicating and the array of dried herbs, spices and custom blended seasonings is dazzling - 400 dried herbs and spices and 140 custom blends make up the inventory. Really, you can see why conflicts raged over the Spice Trade Routes in times past! Imagine cooking or baking without these wonderful flavors. The Bend Store is a franchise location of a company started in Denver in 2009. The folks who staff the Bend store are so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. You can buy as little of the products as you like as the store staff will portion them out of big jars for you. (Buying smaller quantities is key in keeping dried herbs and spices flavorful so you use them up before their flavor is lost.) Some are prepackaged into popular 2 oz size jars, perfect for spice drawers or cabinets at home. Taster jars are on the shelves for many of the items, and if you don't see a taster for something you want to try, just ask the staff. We sailed away from our maiden voyage visit (there will be many more to come) with many things including Brittany Fleur de Sel, Sea Salt with Italian Black Truffles, Harissa Spice Blend, dried porcini mushrooms, the under appreciated kitchen gem celery seed and a jar of beautiful preserved lemons. As soon as I can find those Peruvian recipes calling for Aji peppers that I tucked away until I found the peppers, I'll be back as Savory Spice had those lemony flavored pepper gems in both dried whole and ground form. We especially appreciated the array of Indian and Moroccan spice blends. Not to mention the several options they had of one of my favorite spices, cardamom, that appears in so many different ethnic cuisines in dishes sweet and savory. Yahoo! This will be our go to place now for all kinds of spices and dried herbs. Yes, we've been to the other well known herb and spice vendor, which shall remain nameless but the initials are Penzeys. It may be a matter of different strokes for different folks, but we found the Savory Spice Shop better on many levels. If you live in Bend or if you're visiting, you should stop in and experience this amazing place. Your nose and tastebuds will thank you. And here's an idea - dried herbs and spices, in particular harder to find seasoning mixes (Ras el Hanout, Garam Masala, Za'Taar) make wonderful hostess or holiday gifts, especially when tucked in a pretty bag or box with a recipe or two. Tis almost the season! :-) Here's another idea - pop up a bowl of popcorn, sprinkle the Italian Black Truffle salt over it and pour a sparkler (as in wine). What a simple, perfect treat to celebrate life's gifts.

This was my first time visiting a spice shop. One must wait by the door as they limit the number of people that come in. The lady who greeted us was very pleasant: she introduced herself and the other staff, explained the layout of the store and the fact that they can fill any size of a jar with desired spices. They mostly specialize in spice mixes, but also have different sauces. They have a loyalty program (spend $100 and get $10 credit). One can also order online and pick up or they ship. Parking was easy to find. Very enjoyable shopping experience.
