If there is a place I dislike shopping more than big chain grocery stores, it is big box warehouse - bulk purchase stores. So it was against my instincts that I ended up in the Cash and Carry today. I was looking for four (8 oz) souffle dishes, preferably American made but French works too. Having exhausted other in town options, I thought I'd try this . Much to my surprise, they carried 10 oz souffle dishes. Those will do. In six packs. That's good. For under $20 for the set. Perfect. They're imports from China. Not so good; still, in a pinch, "sold". But they were out of stock. Bummer. (Meyer Lemon souffles for Christmas dessert may become Meyer Lemon tarts!) As long as I was in the store, I thought I'd look around. I was pleasantly surprised. In fact, I'd go back here if I were looking for specific things. As heads up for Yeeps and other peeps, this is more than it seems at first glance or by reputation. Worth a stop. The store is clean and well organized, with a very friendly and helpful guy at the counter. And you don't have to buy things in huge packages or sizes, although they do sell things in that arrangement. Like gallon cans of salsa, drums of vegetable oil ("for frying" said the sign...really...there is a reason I don't eat restaurant fried food), megasize containers of condiments, cases of soft drinks, fifty pound bags of beans of all kinds and rice of many varieties and...the list goes on. They had bulk sizes of food storage items too. Like 9 x 12 dry wax paper squares in couple of hundred quantity for about $15 or 2000 twisty ties for about $3. It seemed as if they had literally hundreds of options of food take out containers and bags and wraps and all kinds of paper products, including paper towels, and napkins and plastics like plates and cups. For example, 16 oz. Red Solo Cups in quantities from bags containing as few as 50 for something quantities to boxes containing several hundred. Many catering supplies down one aisle that I bet would come in handy for home use as well if you were hosting a big crowd. (Say "...barbeques, tailgates, fairs or festivals..."; are you listening to the Red Solo Cup song? ;-) ) They also had a huge aisle with janitorial and cleaning supplies although only big name commercial products. I didn't see any of the Mrs. Meyers products or other "earth friendly" brands I typically choose. They have kitchen wares too, some of which you can buy individually, like whisks and ladles. (They even had a 1/2 oz ladle. Cute. ) Many serve ware things are sold in bulk, as in glass shot glasses at $17 for a dozen. I didn't venture into the meat freezer but one could see huge slabs of stuff in there through the window. There is also a walk in produce room, although short on organics or sustainably harvested items, which is my agriculture of choice whenever possible. They also had an unexpectedly small freezer case for baked things, like "Denny's quality" cakes and cheesecakes. But surprisingly, they also had frozen cakes from Oakland, California's very good "Just Desserts" bakery. One of the things that caught my eye was how much shelf space they had devoted to syrups used to make Italian sodas or to flavor coffee. Shelves and shelves of individual bottle options from Da Vinci and Torani at under $4 / bottle to Moline at under $6 / bottle, it seemed as if they had every possible flavor, and sugar free options too. Good to keep in mind if you're thinking ahead to make festive beverages over the holidays for guests who do not imbibe alcoholic beverages. There was a sign that said Bob's Red Mill products were now carried in the store. Although I didn't see them when I looked around, that's a good sign for carrying a quality miller of grains and flours and mixes. Overall, I was surprised to discover this is a nicely "AOK" place that I might think of for this and that now and again, even if I don't fit the profile of shopper who might be a regular here. PS re LOCATION - Once on the East side of town in a relatively obscure location off of Nels Anderson Road, Cash and Carry relocated to 1500 NE Third St (aka Highway 97) some time back - maybe a year ago - when falling prices for Bend RE and rents made a more central location doable. Not sure the Yelp pageis updated for correct address as yet, so heads up about that. As landmark, it is next door to Round Table Pizza.

I compare this to Costco but for staples. Their meat department is where bulk sale cost savings are made affordable

Bargreen Ellingson is distributor of supplies and equipment to restaurants, bars, hotels,…read morejanitorial companies and caterers. The Bend store is one link in the national chain.. Although clearly a trade supply store and some things (as in glassware and dishes and flatware) are only sold in gross quantities , it is open for sales to the public and there are things here that home cooks can buy in singles that might come in handy. As example, on our most recent visit we purchased more of our fav things to buy at Bargreen...stainless steel whisks of various sizes in good quality at a fraction of the price of other retail. (We've given a number of these away and hence the return for more.) We also picked up a single muddler of pretty decent quality from the bar section. As another example, if you were in the market for a big plastic, food quality storage tub in which to brine a holiday turkey, this would be the place to find one at a decent price. Or a REALLY big, unbreakable, salad bowl to take that salad for 30 to the school potluck at a price point that wouldn't break the bank if it wasn't returned. Located in the building originally constructed a couple of years ago to house Austin Tile, a great business now sadly defunct due to Bend's recession, as you enter from the private parking lot (hooray - ample parking) you'll note all the stonework on the building exterior and a massive high ceilinged lobby with a sort of spiral staircase up to the second floor. (If you're not able to climb stairs, have no worries...there is an elevator at the rear of the first floor...with nicely mosaic tiled walls to remind us all of the original tile company.) In our experience, there has always been a very helpful someone at the front desk to ask if you're looking for something specific and to point you in that direction, or to invite you to wander if that's what you are there to do. Maybe it's just us, but our recent visit to Bargreen's it seemed darker, less well stocked and overall less "zing" than on earlier visits. Bargreen's seemed to show the impact of the economic slowdown in Bend. Hard to fathom as even now restaurants seem to be opening and closing and changing hands at a pretty good clip in this tourist fueled city of about 80,000 people. But maybe the restaurant ownership changes mean old existing equipment and materials get recycled not purchased new. The second floor is where the restaurant specific glassware, dishware, furniture and accent "stuff" (like menu covers) are displayed. The first floor houses bar supplies, janitorial supplies and a plethora of kitchen use / cookware of all knds. It's probably the second floor more than the first that shows the "bloom off the rose" these days. We are people who can easily entertain ourselves for long periods by looking about in well stocked cooking stores, even in smaller stores like the delightful Ginger's on Bend's westside or the kitchen / baking section of Newport Avenue Market. We go in for one thing, and end up browsing to find something else useful. When we travel, cooking stores (and great grocery stores for that matter) are destination stops for us. We had quite a lot of fun exploring Bargreens when they first opened in Bend...but now it's a place where we are on a hunt for something specific, we get it and leave. But three stars means AOK after all, and while we recognize we are not their target market, Bargreens is that for us as home cooks. .

If I could give these guys negative five stars, I surely would…read more These guys are a commercial appliance repair that comes out to your site. Let me start by stating the definition of 'Repair' - verb - to fix or mend (a thing suffering from damage or a fault). I had these guys come out to service my coffee roaster. I had been having an issue where my pilot would not light to heat the drum up inside. Rob was confident that he could assess the issue and fix the problem. Rob and an employee came over and while they obviously have had extensive experience with burners and any other COMMON appliance, they were going blindly into my coffee roaster, while referencing a technician from the coffee roaster company over the phone. 3 costly hours later, they figured out that coffee chaff was blocking my air line. Oops, my fault. I felt pretty stupid at that point. There was NOTHING actually wrong with the roaster itself - just some chaff blocking the air hose that supplies air for the pilot to turn on. So they cleaned the hose out. Great, very appreciative. So, they close everything on the roaster back up and serve me my whopping $260 bill for cleaning chaff out of my hose. Whew, that was okay though, because, my mistake for not checking the hose myself beforehand. Then, a couple of hours after they left, I go to roast coffee and my burner is acting completely different from how it was BEFORE they had touched the roaster. Damn. I could not change the level of flame on the burner. It was stuck at high. So, I would essentially burn beans had I put beans in the roaster. Not cool. So, I did the rational thing and called Rob back to let him know the situation, pretty confused, and he said that the burner burns optimally at 'high'. Ha. So I let him know that the burner should not be stuck at 'high' and I should be able to turn it all the way to 'off' when I need to. He was pretty sure that he was right and that I knew nothing about my roaster so he said he would call the coffee roaster company to confirm that and I told him 'No. I want you to come back out and put it back the way it was BEFORE YOU TOUCHED IT.' He seemed pretty irritated and not totally willing to fix what they had broke, because, you know, I never had a problem with the way the roaster performed BEFORE THEY TOUCHED IT. He went on to say that people that have these roasters are very wealthy households or businesses and that he would insist on charging to fix what he BROKE and that he did not believe he did anything to change the state of the roaster. The next day he sent out his employee (I had to call again to make sure he was coming out). At this point I had zero trust in their ability to assess any issues with my roaster. I asked the employee 'So, you have no idea what you guys did to make the burner the way it is?' and the employee just shook his head 'no', half knowing what dingbats they are for 'appliance repair men'. I asked him a bit about the insides of the roaster since he opened it back up, and he said that they 'didn't touch anything in here.' (WHICH I LATER FIND OUT THEY CHANGED DRAMATICALLY AND WAS THE ISSUE ALL TOGETHER.) They employee stayed at our place for the next hour trying to get a call back from the coffee roaster tech. He never called. So Rob told him to leave and to come back when they could get ahold of him, as they did not want to touch my roaster now without getting exact instruction on what to do. (But wait! They were completely willing to charge me for installing something else on my roaster. As if I would have them break more on my roaster and pay more. No. Just please fix what you changed and broke.) In my experience with fixing cars, everything that I touch and change and move, I take note of so that I know what I have done to change it so that I can put it back to its original default. These guys did NOT do that in a complex environment that they were completely new to. They basically used my roaster and a dummy to learn off of without being accountable for their mistakes. I never heard from these guys after Robs employee left. I ended up communicating directly with the coffee roaster company myself and figured out that they had messed around with some screws that regulate the pressure of the propane. So I played around with it myself and fixed a problem that was NOT there BEFORE Rob-N-Son appliance 'repair' had touched it. Wow. Do NOT use these guys unless you want a 'repair' man that is NOT accountable for his mistakes. You will end up paying MORE in the end. Stay the hell away.
