It kills me to do this, but this place has fallen off hard. We used to eat here regularly until we moved farther away, and it was always a solid and reliable neighborhood sushi joint. I was nearby last week and decided to drop in for lunch for old time's sake, so I ordered a roll and an order of gyoza. The gyoza came to the table browned on the bottom but limp and soggy, like they had been cooked earlier and then microwaved. Everyone knows the whole point of pan-fried gyoza is the crispy bottom that contrasts with the steamed wrapper, so I flagged down the server and said "aren't these supposed to be crispy?" She took the plate back to the kitchen, then brought them back a few minutes later "crispy" -- they had dumped them into the deep-fryer. Deep-fried gyoza are vastly inferior to pan-fried/steamed gyoza, but the truly egregious thing about this is they had deep-fried the one where I had already bitten off the end. The roll was OK but not amazing; nori was chewy, and I found a tough piece of avocado skin inside one of the pieces. So, I won't be back. It was pretty slow inside at prime lunch hours so I guess the locals know what's up as well. read more

Caught a quick late afternoon lunch with the bro-in-law and hubs. We were immediately welcomed and shown our seats. Restaurant was clean and bright. The teriyaki chicken was ok but lacked flavor. The California Roll was definitely flavorless and the rice a tad mushy. The miso soup was served before the meal, had little chunks of tofu and was luke warm although the flavor was there. The restaurant receives a lot of to go orders for pick up and actually turned away two couples as they were closing to prepare for dinner. I was invited by a friend. This is very nice place. Sushi are very delicious. We ordered Dynasty roll, Victoria roll, Kuro Shio, Gyoza and I also tried their Nameko miso soup. I really enjoyed the rolls. Soup was also delicious with tiny mushrooms. If you don't eat pork do not order Gyoza. Service was great. We got complementary green tea. read more

40-MINUTE LUNCH SERVICE Last Tuesday I came here for lunch at the last minute. I arrived at 1:10 PM yet lunch service was going to close at 2:00 PM. I could not take too much time ordering items. For appetizers I ordered two items I'm accustomed to at Japanese restaurants - chicken kaarage and shrimp and vegetable tempura. For the sushi roll I thought about getting a shrimp tempura roll. Since I ordered a shrimp tempura I decided to get another type of roll. As Satsuma Sushi is located on E. El Camino Road I decided get order the El Camino Roll, which is a sushi roll I never ordered before I was shocked that the first time to get was the sushi roll instead of the two appetizers first. The El Camino Roll has two distinct textures. There is the raw yellow tail in the middle with the seared eel on top. When you take a bite of the roll you taste the raw and cooked fish. The El Camino Roll was filling and satisfying. I am glad I didn't order a sushi roll that I ordered before. Any items that are breaded and deep fried the breading can't be soggy. The breading on both the chicken kaarage and tempura was crispy. The meat on the chicken kaarage was moist. Even though I enjoyed the shrimp tempura I liked how the vegetable tempura wasn't overcooked. Vegetables that are overcooked tend to be mushy. However that wasn't the case with the vegetable tempura as they were cooked al dente. With a quick lunch I enjoyed my meal at Satsuma Sushi last Tuesday. I don't go to Mountain View often but if I'm craving for something to eat I know I can get a good meal at Satsuma Sushi without worrying. read more

We honestly weren't expecting much since this was an unplanned stop after leaving Best Buy, but I can confidently say this turned into one of the best Japanese dining experiences I've had in the Bay Area, maybe even in my life. I'm a big fan of Japanese food, and my family and I often explore different Japanese restaurants, but this was truly the best surprise we've had in years. Let me start with the service: the staff was incredibly kind and patient when they noticed my son's autism lanyard, and they even allowed us to come in with our emotional support dog without us needing to ask, that level of empathy and awareness meant a lot to us. Right at the beginning, I had what was honestly the best miso soup I've ever had, followed by the best sunomono as well. What was supposed to be simple dishes already exceeded all my expectations, so by the time the main rolls arrived, my expectations were high, and somehow they still surpassed them. We ordered the Philadelphia Roll, Lion King Roll, and the Golden Bear Roll (highly recommended by our server). Not only were they beautifully presented, but they were absolutely delicious, truly some of the best rolls I've ever had! You've gained a loyal customer. Sorry to say we had a terrible experience with the customer service on a Saturday evening around 7:30 . My uncles food came out within 15 min and I waited 30-35 minutes for two basic sushi rolls that never came out . When my uncle spoke up our server was very dismissive and inattentive to the issue. The sweet guy behind the sushi bar was the only one who seemed apologetic . We watched two tables be seated and get their food (with one of them being a huge sushi boat family style order ) before my avocado rolls ever got to the table. I really hope they are able to have a meeting about the customer service being offered here , it was definitely a weird dinner experience and disappointing . read more

They tried to do the tricky thing where they bury the fact that they already pre-added a tip to the bill (unexpected since we were a small party) and then prompted us to add on an additional regular tip (including tipping on the new balance which included the pre-added tip)!!!! We were looking for some good sushi before flying home. Stopped here on the way to the airport. Miso soup was salty. I asked for iced green tea and got iced black tea. My wife asked for hot green tea, got hot water. Asked to have it replaced with green tea and got the same hot water. The agedashi tofu was tasteless. The sushi deluxe combo looked nice, but the fish was veiny and the rice seemed like it was a day old. It was hard and not very tasty. I didn't finish my sushi. There is a small sushi bar with half the chairs used for storage. The dining area is a booth, table and bench layout. We both ordered rolls, Musashi for Wifey and El Camino for me. The fish in mine was fresh, tasty and plentiful. I thought the lettuce in the Musashi was a little odd but overall a good roll. Service was fast and attentive. Ordered Miso Soup, Kampachi Sashimi, the Lion King Roll (not baked btw), & the Sakura roll. Just a few bad notes: the tempura batter on the Lion King Roll was slightly stale, the rice was oddly kind of cold, and the ginger was also a bit dry/ not fresh. And one bad thing. I got a sashimi with a bone in it. It got caught in my throat and one more minor bad thing. The server gave our Hamachi Kama to the table next to us by accident or on purpose? ( anyone order hamachi Kama know that this dish takes time. We fish all the food and have to wait extra 15 min for the Kama. That sucks! The server spend time talking to the table next to us and didn't play attention to the food she served. ( BAD) I got the bad experience.. two of us spend over $200 and this is what my first experience. Disappointed. 5) Type of cuisine standard : ( 4 point) - The style of Japanese food they serve is pretty close to the way it was prepare in Japan. Not bad! It was my first time at this restaurant. I went for lunch, and it took a normal amount of time for my food to arrive at the table. I ordered the lunch combination with three items. I noticed there was a long hair on my chicken teriyaki. I thought, yeah, whatever, sometimes that happens. I ate a couple of pieces when, oh oh, I found another hair. I immediately lost interest in the chicken. Then I said, okay, I'll try my vegetable tempura, when, oh surprise, there was a deep fried hair stuck to my veggies. I completely lost my appetite. The menu was pretty affordable, especially the lunch specials and combos ($12-20) I'd give the Okayo Don 5/5. I came in and placed a large to-go order using gift cards I had for this restaurant. Unfortunately, the manager told me they were no longer valid due to new ownership. However, the gift cards had no expiration date and clearly displayed the name of the business--which hasn't changed. It's really disappointing to be turned away like this, especially when there's no indication that the cards are void. We arrived to the restaurant in less than an hour and they said the order wasn't ready yet... but there was a table full of lots takeout orders. We waited about 13 minutes, and the worker realized that our order had been sitting there on the table the whole time! We waited for nothing. I got the Oyako Don ($14) and it was pretty good. Seasoned and flavored very well. Fluffy egg and tender chicken, but the bowl had A LOT of onion. Though the onion was good, there was more onion than egg and chicken. So I haven't been here in a VERY long time. I was waiting to be seen tonight at pamf, so we decided to grab a bite nearby. The service was fine, except I ordered hot tea and had to remind the guy several times. It came, piping hot, after 3 reminders, which was about halfway through our meal... Which meant I had to throw some ice in it to be able to drink it before our meal was over. The food.. was not good. - The fish tasted old. - The agedashi tofu was decent, but not for $7.25/8.25+tt. - The bento box was fine. - We added the soft shell crab, and it had more breading (so thick and mushy) than soft shell crab. I peeled half the breading off and it took up most of the plate it came in (see photo).. The rolls were fine. Everything was fine, but in an overpriced, how are they still here kinda way.. and I realized they are the closest thing you can walk to if you don't want hospital food. Ah yes! Location! Location! Location! K, well.. I'd rather eat hospital food next time than waste $ here. read more
