This is for the restaurant on Mission. 7/9/2024 I dropped my wife off across the street for the shuttle to the airport. Service was great.... I ordered 2 eggs over medium, the hash browns (which were barely warm somehow, I knew I should have ordered them extra crispy) with a biscuit & gravy. The biscuit was dense, not fluffy. Gravy was ok i guess (not anywhere as good as Whites). I will probably try the one on State to see if its just the cook. read more

Wow, I just realized I never finished my review for Sassy Onion, and we've been going here regularly for...well, years. My partner is Celiac's and very sensitive to gluten and cross contamination. Sassy has a GF menu and because the pass is right there in the front of the house, you can hear the wait staff call out "Gluten free allergy!" when they pass an order through. They have gluten free gravy and bread and go out of their way to keep things safe. In the three years I've been going here with my partner, she has not ONCE gotten sick from the food. Since she knows within an hour if she got contaminated, we always know when a restaurant does her dirty. SO hasn't once. We've had incredible wait staff and have even commented once on how well taken care of we are. We'll usually come here on a Saturday or Sunday morning, sometimes with our kids sometimes without. We usually show up around brunch time, so we'll vary up what we eat. My partner always varies. Sometimes she has an omelett, sometimes she'll have a skillet, sometimes she likes the simplicity of the All American (two eggs, hashbrowns, and bacon or sausage). Sometimes she goes for a burger or a salad. And she loves the fact that their onion rings can be done gluten free! But with chicken tenders done GF and chicken fried steak available GF as an option, there's plenty of me to order too and not risk getting her sick. I stick with my usual, 9 times out of 10. I love the chicken fried steak, gravy on the side, with eggs over medium and hashbrowns done spicy with jalapenos and onions. I get mine GF, and honestly, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The main difference is instead of a biscuit or toast, I get a slice of banana bread. You have the choice of one or two pieces of steak. My partner reminds me, EVERY TIME, that I only like to get one. And if I do order two (because I'm really hungry this time), I start groaning and tell her to remind me only to order one when I'm halfway through. Sometimes I'll get the Captain's Sandwich, which is a chicken fried steak, bacon, and egg on a biscuit, covered in gravy. I get this only if I'm willing to not kiss my partner until my next toothbrushing. Sometimes, man...it's worth it. But I usually stick to GF CFS. Our kids love it too. One kid goes chicken strips and fries, every time. The other usually goes with a cheeseburger. Both of them are happy. The chicken strips are really good (dad tax) and are huge. I've never had the burger, but both my son and my partner say they're really good. So yeah. This is a great place but the line is out the door during busy periods. You can call ahead and get your name put on a list and I STRONGLY recommend that. read more

I'm not sure if this is a recent development or if it's always been this way, but this restaurant is disorganized. My friend placed an order for me to pick up over the phone and paid in advance. When I went to the restaurant, there was a bit of fumbling to try to figure out the status of the order. When it was finally ready, I mentioned it had been prepaid and the employee said she wasn't sure. I pointed to the charge line on the receipt and she still said she needed to verify with someone else first. That aside, the food itself was good. I ordered an omelet, which came with hash browns and toast. The omelet was huge and had the perfect ratio of filling, cheese and egg. The hash browns, despite sitting in a take out box, we're still crispy and well-seasoned. Breakfast food is always better to eat right away, so my food probably would have been even better if we had eaten in. Hopefully if I return, the pickup/paying experience won't be so difficult! read more

my favorite thing to order here is the hazelnut banana bread, it is a gluten free option and i get it even though i'm not gluten free! i love how they have the option to "combo-up" your french toast/pancakes/etc. which lets you add eggs and bacon or sausage links. for about $20 i received a generous amount of food - i'm taking over half of my banana bread home with me to enjoy later! i wouldn't say that this is the best breakfast spot in salem, but definitely a good option! I have both ate here and ordered take-out before, service always seems to be pretty efficient and friendly. the location is right outside of the immediate downtown area, which is kinda nice - right now you have to pay to park on the street, so get your coins out! (the sassy onion has a sign on the door that says they will exchange cash for coins though if you need some) read more

Stopped by Salem to see the area as I've never been here. I saw that Sassy Onion was highly recommended here and at first the name theres me off as I really don't like onions. However, the food was local american fare. Then I walked in, I noticed how large the portions were so I definitely split them in half. I ordered the chicken fried steak and a side of biscuit and gravy. Chicken fried steak - the portions are giant! The breading falls apart really quickly. I personally like it but it may be up to preference. They used actual steak and not ground beef. biscuit and gravy - one biscuit is definitely enough for two people! It was okay but I did want to note the gravy here was different from the chicken fried steak. The gravy here was super peppery and almost a little overwhelming. read more

Truly Memorable Many places claim to be known for "world famous" something, but how often does that actually pan out? In this case, when Sassy's claims to have "world famous french toast", believe it! I ordered the mixed berry version, which came with a pile of whipped cream mixed with blueberries and strawberries. Wow!!!! Stopped by for a quick breakfast before a long day of work ahead for me and was looking for a new high in carbs and this place delivered!!! Sign says they are famous for their French toast to I looked at those options and picked the SINNOMON ROLL SWIRL French toast. It was absolutely AMAZING. Somehow they converted a freshly made cinnamon roll into French toast. It had nuts and icing PLUS well baked apple pieces on it. Literally the best French toast I have ever eaten!!!! I don't usually order French toast when we go out to breakfast but all the Yelp photos of the French toast convinced me this is a must have. They were right! I ordered the cinnamon roll French toast combo with two fried eggs and two slices of applewood bacon. The servicer came out with this massive plate with three large pieces of egg dipped and rolled with corn flacks discs of deliciousness. I kid you not, the portion was massive and no I didn't finish it! If I would of known it was going to be that big, my husband and I could of shared. Anyway, the eggs also were cooked perfectly and the bacon, too, was cooked just right. Sassy Onion is located in the downtown area in Salem. It was a Monday morning and we were able to get a seat right away. Because we are still dealing with this pandemic you have to wear mask when coming in and I think by the most part all booths were available here because they hung plexiglass between each booth. I've only eaten here once, but it was pretty great. The service was attentive and friendly, the coffee was quality, and the food came out quickly. They even give you your own pot of coffee so you don't have to worry about waiting for refills! I ordered the avocado and bacon benedict. It was pretty freaking fantastic. There was a copious amount of benedict sauce, the eggs were cooked perfectly, and the hashed browns were nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Nice staff, the place was clean and had really beautiful design and lighting. Good specials with not bad prices.. the food was kinda disappointing, even though they are huge portions and LOOK amazing. My boyfriend got the French toast, which looked impressive, but because the bread was so thick, it hadn't been given enough time to soak and was basically just bread with a sweet crusty topping! Yummy, but coulda been better. I got the Benedict, and the eggs were lovely, but the hollandaise was pretty gross. Seemed not homemade, almost like some kind of cheese sauce? As anticipated on a Sunday morning, the restaurant was packed with families, young & old couples and friends just meeting up for breakfast...I would assume that during the morning breakfast rush, the wait for a table could be longer, so please plan accordingly. On this occasion, the wife ordered the Mixed Berry French Toast entree and I ordered the Corned Beef Hash entree. Per my wife, the French Toast dish was OK and satisfying. My Corned Beef Hash plate, that included two poach eggs and Texas toast was tummy filling and delicious. Heard of this place from family that have visited Salem, and it did not disappoint! However, be prepared to wait a bit, especially if visiting on a weekend. Luckily, I was traveling solo so I was seated fairly quickly even though there were 10-15 people waiting. Everything from the staff, food, and atmosphere was amazing. My waiter was incredibly helpful, and gave me his recommendations based on what I was in the mood for. Food came out quickly especially given it was very busy (came for a weekend breakfast). Their famous french toast was a must-try. Lightly crispy on the outside, soft and warm goodness on the inside. I also opted for the San Diego Skillet Breakfast, which hit the spot. The Sassy Onion is a well known restaurant in Salem. They are known for their above average breakfast and large portions. I haven't been in some time and this Market St. Location is new and much larger than their first location. I was not impressed. There are several great breakfast options in Salem; ACME Cafe, Word Of Mouth and White's to name a few. Most have a big breakfast called "Big Mess" or "Don's Big Mess." I've now had the Mess everywhere. The Sassy Onion was/is my least favorite by far. It was a very small portion, my eggs were over done and when I pointed out there was no gravy on mine AND my son's dish, I was told I was wrong. I showed my server and when corrected, she immediately got us both gravy. In the end I give the dish a hard 4 out of 10. I will give The Sassy Onion another chance, but not for breakfast. I really think they can and should do better. I love supporting local businesses and local ownership, but I work hard for my money and want to eat well, every time I go out! read more

Have wanted to try this place for a long time. Amazing! We were seated quickly and our server was great! So bubbly and friendly but not overboard. They make their own bread, which is hands down better than any I've had store bought. I had the veggie omelette with sassy hashbrowns, side of bacon and rye toast. Huge portions (took half of it home). The ingredients were fresh. The veggie omelette had spinach, feta cheese and kalamata olives. So delicious and they weren't stingy with the olives. The sassy hashbrowns had green onions/peppers, red peppers and cheese. The hashbrowns were crispy on the bottom and perfectly cooked on top. Great spices and flavor. They make their own homemade jam for our toast. Great coffee and excellent customer service. If you haven't tried them yet, I recommend doing so. This review is for an online order I placed on 11/13/24. I ordered the black bean burger on a gluten free bun with a side garden salad. I should have looked at the food before taking it to go, but here we are. First, the young woman at the hostess station/coffee bar was very friendly and handed me my order in a very timely manner. My food was even ready a bit before the expected time, so that was great. When I got back to my office, I opened the first box, which was the garden salad. The garden salad was quite good- delicious with fresh mixed greens, generous amount of cucumbers, sliced cherry tomatoes, and what seemed to be homemade croutons. The house vinaigrette was pretty good as well. Next came the black bean burger. The black bean patty was very obviously badly freezer burnt along the edges. I had to break off large chunks of the patty to remove the freezer burnt parts. Once that was removed, the burger was decent. I've been to Sassy for breakfast/brunch and lunch before and it's always been pretty good. This was just an off day. I would have hoped something with that much freezer burn would not be served. I know freezer burn is not dangerous in any way but it definitely affects the flavor, texture, and overall aesthetic appeal of the food. I'll go back but just not for the black bean burger. read more
