I've been going there for years. The prices are great and the selection is better than anywhere in Phoenix. I do feel that it's geared more toward experienced seamstresses that know what they want and how much. If you need instructions on different fabrics you should probably go to JoAnn's but even there, the experience is lacking. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. read more

This store makes me feel proud of Phoenix! Pluses: * amazing button selection, at really affordable prices. You'll find authentic wood, glass, and metal buttons (but they'll be mixed in with plastic junk and odds n' ends that aren't even really buttons, just ... thingies). When I was going through a "make Anthro-style necklaces out of metal things" phase, this was my No. 1 supplier. * cotton quilting fabrics. I'm not a quilter, but if I need a small swatch of novelty fabric to make, say, a Scrabble tile bag, this is the place I'll go. * fabric in general! I haven't quite figured out where SAS gets its inventory. I always assumed it was mill ends and dead stock. But I've bought yardages here that have clearly already been cut and clearly were originally sold by fabric.com (I recognize their inventory sticker). I don't know how the sausage is made, but oh well. * stuff you didn't know you needed. Yards and yards of that corny "jeans" belting from the 70s? Holly Hobby eyelet trim? You're in luck. * really nice suiting materials. Mixed in with shit, of course, but that's SAS. Maybe it stands for "Sublime Among Shitty." Minuses: * the staff, MAYBE. Though I have to say, people ask stupid questions like "how many yards of fabric does it take to make a dress?" This is not the place to go with your newbie sewing questions. Take that nonsense to the cutting table at Joann's where, in my experience, the nosy ladies always want to get up in your beeswax while they're cutting your fabric ("what are you making???") You do have to know how the place works: Get your fabric cut and then meet them at the front to pay for it. read more

fabric? yes, please - and tons of it and cheap. and the place is big and airy and has all the extra frills you could possibly need. You can make yourself anything froma full-size cookie monster costume, to an indian sari that people would swear came from Calcutta. This place is great. One note of caution: the sales ladies can get surly and can occasionally make it an unpleasant experience. Halloween week i went there and experienced a ratted haired blonde at the front (who was probably about 50) giving a customer who spoke fairly-pieced-together but not fluent english a REALLY hard time. Actually she was downright rude. What made it worse was that she started 'announcing' things in an overly-loud manner to her co-workers, like "it must be me" and "i think i'm going nuts - i wanna start this day over" - -you know? but in a really annoying, aimed-at-the-customers, passive aggressive manner as if nobody could hear her. After hours or rather days of trying to find a satin sheet that did not come in a set already I decided to just try satin fabric instead. After reading the other reviews I wasn't sure exactly what to expect as no fabric store that I've patronized previously had as much as the reviews said this place would. I have driven past this place for years and never noticed what it was, I always thought it was a costume shop. Walking into this store I'm sure my face was priceless as I am also sure that upon first entry my jaw hit the floor. There was so much fabric everywhere. Not just your usual small bolts but giant rolls as tall as I am in most cases. I found not only the satin I was looking for but also many other fabrics that would also work that I never thought of before. In addition the vast selection the prices were amazing. So many deals on bulk fabric, definitely a sewers dream. The only caution I have for this place is that I needed three pieces of the fabric but I wasn't made aware that they only do one cut per person per fabric. Luckily the lady helping me understood my confusion at not being told this before hand and was willing to cut all three pieces for me. I do wish that their thread selection was larger. Even though they have industrial size spools they mostly have primary colors. I had a difficult time matching the thread and fabric. I will definitely come back here the next time I have any fabric needs. read more

There's lots of things I don't enjoy about SAS (completely unorganized, unhelpful employees)but my #1 issue is that fabrics are almost never labeled!!! I never know what the hell I'm buying and it's infuriating. I've asked for help and get unhelpful answers like "its outdoor fabric." Ok?? But what is it made of?? Drives me nuts. What I do like about this store is it's dirt cheap. The fabric all seems like it's been sitting in the store for decades. I've brought fabric to be cut only for it to be unrolled and to find it's dirty and stained. I'm genuinely curious when the last time was that they purchased new fabric. Everything is old and outdated. so why do I keep coming back? It's .5 miles from my house and it's cheap. That's about it. read more

After being disappointed going to the SAS Fabric Apache Blvd. location (disorganized and dirty), I decided to give the SAS Fabric Indian School location a chance. I'd been there years back and think they remodeled because everything was organized, easy to find, easily priced and very friendly service. I'm a fabriholic and SAS is my dealer. Quilters, imagine this: all the yummy great name, great quality quilter's cotton for $3.99 a yard. Behold - Alison Glass, Alexander Henry, Bonnie and Camille, Kaffe Fasset, Heather Ross, Tina Givens, Joel Dewberry - all for $3.99 a yard! The downside: you need to take your time, and dig through a fair amount of crap, pieces are often a half yard or less, and you can't go in expecting to find the brand new line from Moda in all colorways... But it's only $3.99 a yard! Please do me (and the nice ladies who work) a favor. Read the signs and follow the rules. Don't ask how many yards to make a pillow (figure that out yourself!) And please don't just yank all the fabric out and pile big wrinkly heaps on the top of the stacks. Someone's mother took a great deal of time to make neat stacks and it's up to us to keep it that way. read more

Love the prices for the basics I need. Not gonna find too much name brand cotton fabrics and wish I could find more standard solid cottons more often but for everything else a coplayer or costumer may need it's here. Highly recommend. read more

My favorite SAS location. Feels more like a garage sale/treasure hunt compared to shopping at other craft stores but the prices can't be beat. I spend hours in SAS every month. The selection is crazy, you have to really look through things, because this is not a traditional; fabric/craft store. It's an overrun and slightly damaged store. So if you go in knowing this, take your time and look through what you are getting, you can get some amazing deals. I made 6 maxi skirts for my daughter for about $12. This is also a quilters dream paradise. tables full of quilting fabrics in small sections so you can pick up some great pieces. read more

Me and my girlfriend love coming here to buy fabrics. They have a huge selection of materials and the prices are pretty low, compared to other big-chain fabric stores. Customer service is fine, I noticed a lot of people complain about it, but it's really not as bad as it is made out to be. We were afraid to come because of what we had heard, but were pleasantly surprised. As a side note, I noticed one other reviewer singled out a specific employee, a 'Bettie Page wannabe' and gave her a negative review. Whenever we come to that store we love going to her, she is the nicest employee and, unlike several others, actually sews herself. She always goes out of her way to help us when we have questions about a project. I never go out of my way to publicly defend an employee, but I think she deserves better. 5 out of 5 read more

I love going to SAS because they have lots of kooky stuff and when you find something you like, you got to grab it, you might not come across it again. The fabrics and trimmings are inexpensive and unique. The staff isn't too helpful so be patient. Make sure you have plenty of time to look around, it's a big place and lots of stuff to go through. Almost everything is marked, look for other fabrics in the same pile to see prices if it's not labeled. Look over your ticket and watch the sales person write down the prices. We all make mistakes, we are only human. You don't want to get over charged for a mis-calculation. (I say this because one time my ticket said $10 for item when it was only $2.50!). There's no public toilet, just a heads up. They run debit as credit and they do check ID with the card. read more

IM IN LOVE. i used to work at joanns and was discouraged by the high prices of fabrics. I then found SAS and was in heaven! The store is pretty organized so it's not hard to find things and for the most part the employees are extremely busy. I could spend hours in there I just wish I had something to make all the time. read more

I attempted to purchase 2 remnants from a box marked $0.49 each ( in fact EVERY BOX IN THE AISLE WAS MARKED $0.49 each. When I went to pay the clerk who said she was the store manager charged me $0.98 for one and $0.49 for the other, I told her all of the boxes were marked $0.49 she refused to even check out the boxes to verify the $0.49 signage. I ask the sane MANAGER IF I could borrow a pair of scissors she said I could buy a pair but she could not let me borrow a pair. First of all I cannot sew so this review is not from the point of a seamstress. I went there for ribbons and other gold colored fabrics for center piece making and I def found more than I could ever imagine. They have great luxurious fabrics as well as tacky sequin covered fabrics (I totally bought some). If you need fabric you will find what you need or something very close to it. The parking was ok but no lie the place is always packed. As far as customer service goes it really depends on who you deal with. Some are chatty Cathys and others don't seem to care much for the customers. The bottom line is the place might look beat up but the selection is great and the people will cut your fabric and even give you a little extra if they see some damage. read more

After returning from my trip from a big city fashion district, my inner creative genius led me to Sas Fabric. Upon entering the location I felt a gush of endless and surreal inspiration. Why the fuss over a fabric shop you might ask? The fuss is over Sas Fabric shop! Move over Joanns, Walmart or any other ratty fabric place because no one beats Sas! An array of funky, bright, subtle, soft, crisp, shiny, and neutral fabrics fill your eyesight welcoming you to explore! My imagination was running wild in here! I felt as if I was at a true NYC fabric supplier! Other fabric stores in Phoenix simply do not compare and carry FAR less unique fabrics. Joanne is also more catered to the grandma crowd rather than the modern D.I.Y. creative soul. I highly recommened Sas for all fabric related projects. I've become loyal to Sas for its quality and superior selection. The staff is also very quick and experienced so they get you on your way to fulfill your creative urges! Five stars :) read more

I love SAS Fabrics for the occasional crazy price find. They offer end of bolt upholstery or, likely, discontinued items. I just bought four years of upholstery fabric for $25.00! This is fabric that regularly runs about $40 a yard. I have also found canvas rolls for painting. The catch is that first one stands in a line that can be quite long to get their cutting and then another line for the cashier. The checkout process can be time-consuming. My last trip it took me a half hour to get out the door. The other dynamic is the clientele, which can be a bit dicey. When you overhear someone discussing the fabric they used to buy as a nightclub dancer and another person in line discussing dying their locks with shoe polish, one realizes they've entered a different universe. However, the sales staff is largely friendly and there are runners to help you carry big bolts of fabric for checkout. It's the price and treasure hunts that keep me coming back but the store does have its drawbacks; fair warning. read more

I bought a 16 x16 pillow for $5.99. Then I went to the 19th Avenue SAS Superstore and got the exact same thing for $3.50. At the Indian School Road store the person checking me out was snippy and had a chip on her shoulder. The Superstore is well organized, has a better selection, and better prices. read more

I will be back, it had some fantastically great deals. I wanted to buy so much that I had no plans to use. Just to own. OK there were two downsides as far as I could tell. 1. There was no information posted about how the store worked. It sounds silly if you haven't been there. My friend and I were trying to figure out how to hold onto all the bolts we wanted yards of as there were no carts. The answer is you bring it up front and have them cut it for you and they keep it in a bag for you behind the counter until you are ready to check out. You can do this as many times as you like. 2. The salespeople I dealt with were very vague and did not seem as if they had been hired from the best or the brightest. I had to rephrase my questions about how the store worked 4 times before they said something that answered my questions. Once those two things were dealt with I had a great time being overwhelmed by too many choices. TOO MANY CHOICES! read more

honestly, a couple years ago i would have given sas a million stars- the cotton fabric is fun and usually half price compared to fabric.com...but woah-on recent trips i have noticed such bullying- such unprofessionalism from one employee in particular (if you go you will know who this is almost instantly). it is so unpleasant it is just not worth it to me, i would rather go to joanns with a 40% off coupon and not have to see/hear such rudeness. it puts a damper on the whole place, everyone seems tense and no other employees even really smile. it is a shame. read more

I live near SAS and have shopped here for years. They are not your regular fabric store - it's pretty much every man or woman for themselves. If you seek it, you most likely will find it. For those of you who haven't been here in awhile, they've re-done the place and opened a smaller store right next door. Tons of fabric, ribbon, trim, lace, thread, buttons, elastic and much more. I stop in frequently just to see what they have. I have a friend from Seattle who is a quilter and makes some of her own clothing and when she visits it's a must that we go to SAS. The customer service is OK depending on what you are asking for and who you are asking. read more

Wow... I'm not sure if it was accidental or not, but I was overcharged two out of two visits. Really have to watch these people!!!!! I absolutely agree with the other reviews that said they are not friendly, or helpful! Also have to really check the fabric closely. I am obsessed with this place. I love to sew but fabric and accessories are so expensive and often good quality merchandise is hard to find. Sas is amazing it sells a lot of unusual items for a good price. The place is a bit cluttered and sometimes you have to dig through a lot of junk but I have found some amazing things for dirt cheap. read more

I REALLY want to love this place, but my first experience in the store was very disappointing. First, you should know that I lived in New Orleans before coming to Phoenix, and if you are familiar with New Orleans and costuming, then you know about Jefferson Variety. Let me say that when I walked into SAS, my heart swooned, thinking I had found the Phoenix version of Jefferson Variety: The variety of fabrics! The sequins! The appliques! The marabou! If you are a costumer, this is where you want to come. The downside from all of this great potential, is that the person who waited on me was appallingly rude and unkind. She seemed pleasant to other people, and I have no idea why she was so ugly with me. I had found some fabric selections but wasn't sure how much I needed, so I left the fabric at the counter with the attendant, and zipped home to get the measurements. I was back to the store within 20 minutes. The fabric was gone by the time I returned. She said she put it back in the section that it came from, but it absolutely was not there, and she would not come from behind the counter to show me where she put it. She insisted that someone must have bought it. Seriously, there is no way that someone bought that particular fabric in the 20 minutes I was gone--only one other person was very vaguely perusing the fabric where I was looking, and every other piece that I had pulled out and looked at was still there when I returned, except for the ones I handed to her. I really don't understand what happened or why, but I was really disheartened by the end of my experience. So, go there if you need fabric. If you find something you like, buy it then. Don't expect that you will be assisted. And absolutely, don't expect sunshine at the counter from this particular curmudgeon!! read more

Pros, LOTS of choices and prices. Cons, chaos and disorganization. Shelves and shelves with fabrics falling off them, and many out of their proper location. When you take a piece to be cut, it might be a subjective guess by cutter what to charge you as there are no prices or fabric identifications (so you don't know what you are buying as to content either). You just hope it is not flawed, as the lighting is poor in there and it is hard to open up a large piece and see runs etc. Then with some fabrics such as lycra, it is weighed rather than sold by the yard. That can get very costly with heavier fabrics when weighed. Their per yard charges however are very inexpensive, but since I buy a lot of lycra or spandex I get stuck paying more. Thread and notions are very cheap, but be careful with thread quality, you can get a humongous size roll of thread, but I had some sewing machine issues using it and have since switched to a top quality thread SAS doesn't sell. I also don't like the very fast way they cut fabric. The gals are very very nice but they cut differently than normal stores. They always cut the fabric with the widest side up instead of the salvage edge, so your patterns sometimes will be confused as to layout. And, if there is less than one yard in the piece you bought to cut, you must buy it, or leave a yard piece, which makes no sense to me. In other words if I bring them a nice piece from the shelf, and it is 2.25 yards, and I want 2 yards only, I am forced to leave one yard or buy the whole piece so they don't get stuck with a remnant less than one yard. Who does this?? Overall I do like shopping there becasue it is a poor man's version of Project Runway's Mood. :) Three stars read more

I visited the store on Indian School Road for the second time today in the last week. And I felt at home because the clerk's remembered me and even asked where my niece was since she was with me on my last visit to the store. My niece was in HEAVEN she had never heard ot been in a SAS store and she was like a little kid in a candy store and we spend over $100 get material, flowers for hair pieces buttons and and a few other items. We will keep shopping in SAS as there has never been a time when I have gone into the store and they had not had exactly what and need and then some. Keep of the great work SAS and the staff is the best, freindly and courteous and always willing to help. The other thing I love about the store is they hand write out your tickets and then ring you up, this brings back my faith that not everything is done by computer and they don't have the problem that if the computer goes down they can't take care of you this way they can always help with the stress of worrying if the computer is working. read more
