On June 25, 2025, my colleague/friend brought me here for a birthday lunch. I like trying new places so, I was looking forward to it. My first impression is that the place seemed decent, clean enough, and the people there seemed nice enough. We ordered some rolls; the caterpillar roll, the crunch scallop roll, one other roll, and the spicy tuna roll. I did not care for the crunch scallop roll because between the cream cheese and the mayo, all I tasted was cream cheese/mayo. It was a bit much and overpowered any other tastes/flavors present. I also ordered a salmon plate. The salmon was alright buy definitely not the best that I have tasted. It came rice and a choice of two sides; a choice of three salads, and soup. I chose miso soup and the cucumber and seaweed salad. I cannot say anything about the other salads because I did not try them but, I was not fond of the oil/dressing that was used with the cucumber and seaweed salad. I had to make myself tolerate it but, if my food is too oily or greasy, I cannot eat it. The oil/dressing used made the salad super oily and it soon got into the rice and salmon. It was a struggle because it was nearly too overwhelming for me but, I made myself eat it. The place was alright but, it definitely is not high on my list for repeat visits. read more

Please stay away! The eggs were un refrigerated which causes diarrhea my whole family used the toilets late night and early morning. The service was good and even the ambiance was nice and clean. Just can't get over how good the food looked and smelled. The tempura shrimp, teriyaki chicken, had to be the problem cause we didn't eat any of the salads, the rice couldn't have been it either. The teriyaki beef plate is superb it is grilled just right not overcooked not undercooked just a slight pink and the teriyaki was good also had the chicken teriyaki combo with it delicious as well nice char on the dish I love that we can choose the salads on our combo plates I chose the cucumber noodle I forgot what it's called and the coleslaw the Sumi salad I like the dressing it's nice and light with a flavor that complements the meats and rice. Hubby had the talapia teriyaki dish and his two salads he was very happy and full nice generous serving of fish. We ordered the side of dumplings six dumplings was like $7 overall we ended up spending a little over $50 for two dishes and the appetizer of dumplings. The owner of this place should be ashamed of herself to sell food like this. Notice the picture of the curry. The veggies inside taste sour. They have gone bad. Notice also the sticker on the cup says Wednesday, that was the 3rd but they just sold me this today, Jan 5th, Friday. The salad also is not close to fresh. The red lettuce is more brown than red. I would have shared the picture of the sushi as well but my husband already threw it away. We live in Carson neighborhood and NEVER AGAIN. Love the Sumi Salad and figured I needed some kale also. I prefer SanSai's Sumi salad because I don't like to chop cabbage and other stuffs. When I purchase it the way it's presented seem to taste better than mine and dressing set it off just right with the wonton chips on top. Here's what you need to know: the food is decent I felt that quality was okay- a solid 6/10. One piece of the shrimp tempura I had was not cooked all the way, and was very cold. Decided to try this spot since I was in the area. Ordered for my family a Las Vegas roll, edamame, a scallop roll, a California roll, a Washington roll, and tempura shrimp and veggies. I haven't been this underwhelmed by sushi in such a long while. Maybe I've been spoiled by delicious sushi but I cannot recommend some of these rolls! The most delicious was the Washington roll and Scallop roll. Maybe 3/5 but I've had similarly created rolls that taste much more flavorful. The salmon on the Washington roll was delicious and my favorite part of the meal. The tempura itself was lackluster. The equivalent of tasteless water, I couldn't help but wish they had just sprinkled on a dash of salt. The Las Vegas roll felt entirely too mushy, and I could feel the split-open grains of rice, the texture of rice cooked too long. The texture was jarringly soft for a roll deep fried. I would not recommend and would not retry! The baked salmon roll was more preferred by my family as it didn't have the tempura batter, but instead a spicy sauce that greatly enhanced the experience. The staff wore masks, and I can't say the prices are any worse than other places I've been but I would look for another place at this price point.Would I come back? We will not be returning. I ordered a California roll, and it came to us with brown on the avocado. I asked the lady about it & she said that he had just made it. It didn't even taste fresh. On top of that, The employees were rude and very unprofessional. We were sitting there trying to eat, and the employees were playing their favorite songs over the PA system --- rap music! There is some rap that I like, but honestly, I don't want to go to a restaurant to hear it while I'm eating. HOWEVER, when one of the rap songs began to say the N-word, over and over, I could not take it anymore because of the blatant disrespect. Giving this place a solid 4/5. The customer service was alright, the place was clean and the food presentation was great! I like the portion size because it's not too big, not too small, but definitely just right. What I liked most is the nutritional value in the food. The Chicken Bowl is only 213 calories (per 8 oz serving) that packs a whooping 33g of protein and the cucumber seaweed salad is an additional 98 calories. This feels like an odd SanSai Japanese Grill from the ones I've visited. I sort of speculate that SanSai is a franchise and this owner may have gone a bit rogue to deviate from the standard corporate look. It feels like it used to be an Asian steam-tray type take out food joint by design and decor and still maintains that hole-in-the-wall look to the place. The food is okay if not good, but not necessarily great, nor are the prices or portions a bargain either. It's "okay" in terms of if you crave Japanese food, it's a decent option if it's conveniently located for you. It's far from being a destination restaurant you'd make it a point to announce you'd crave and want to travel to, in my opinion. They do the upcharge of $0.50 for brown rice if you don't want white rice, which is a bit of a petty pet peeve of mine, personally. There's quite a few food options here in Carson at the mall area, but not a lot of competitors for Asian Food other than Panda Express inside of the mall. read more

The menus are very extensive for a fast casual restaurant, basic sushi and hand rolls, many choices of sushi rolls, plates or bowls with meats and seafood, soups, great selection of salads and newly added poke bowls. Our favorites are all kinds of salads, hand roll trio, teriyaki beef or chicken, poke bowl, dumpling soup and a few sushi rolls. The raw is always fresh and tasty, the potions are a bit on the smaller side so we usually order a whole bunch of things to share. I've been going to SanSai for years and it's always been consistent. Food is always delicious. I've had their chicken, beef, and salmon teriyaki. I've tried a few of their rolls. They also have a few choices of side salads, but the sumi salad is my go-to. On a recent trip, I ordered a chicken breast salad and that was delicious as well! When it comes to finding acceptable Japanese options in the area, I strongly suggest that you log the extra mileage and go to Gardena or Torrance. Spicy Tuna Handroll -- Was a little peeved that there was avocado inside on top of the cucumber and other greens. The menu doesn't call for it so I was surprised. The spicy tuna wasn't spicy but they did stuff it full. Tempura Udon -- Decent bowl of noodles but how can you mess up that right? They give you a dish of tempura which includes 3 pieces of shrimp and a slice of pumpkin. The broth is flavorful yet modest in taste. Make sure to order at the counter and find a seat. The process is fast and the food is subpar but if you are in a rush and absolutely need some Japanese, then this is your best bet. read more
