Paris brest on my new Hasami Porcelain plate + matching mug
Vanessa N.

I love coming here and looking at the lovely ceramics and glassware. It's a very aesthetically pleasing store. They have items made by local artists and imported from Japan. Today I brought home a locally made soy candle, a Hasami porcelain mug, and matching plate. Definitely a great shop to check out when you're in Japantown! Plus the workers are helpful and friendly.

Very cute little boutique shop full of home decor, jewelry, etc. I'm glad I decided to visit it. Seems quite popular as well since it had a full house :) highly recommend ~

I love all of the Japanese items in this classy store. Lots of unique pieces that anyone would be proud to own and display.

I was gifted two custom made mugs and I absolutely love love love them! They used pictures of my cats and made several for my gifter to choose from. I actually want all of them =). The artist was able to capture my kitties facial features and personalities beautifully! The extras go on the shelf so you might just be able to buy one with my kitties on it!! I have not gone to the shop myself but if I'm ever in the area, I will definitely pop in for a lookey-see!!

Cute little shop, i'm a cook so I stop in to check out the knives and some of the other supplies. I'll usually buy something.

The prices are fairly high, so come prepared to either spend quite a lot or walk out with only a few or no pieces depending on your budget. During my visit, Felicia Chiao was having an exhibit there with a few pieces up for sale. However, they were definitely artistic pieces of plates and bowls, as they were in the $1000s range and I wouldn't dare to use a $1000 bowl to eat cereal out of. I ended up getting a cute gnome. When I went to check out, the person working was telling me about how she also owns some of the gnomes and even helped to wrap it nicely in paper to make sure it traveled back safely with me.

Just around the corner in the same building as Tartine Manufactory is Heath Ceramics, located in the chic former industrial district called Potrero Hill. Stroll inside and you will find rows and rows of simple sturdy dinnerware that is thicker than most, and finished in a range of earthy subtle colors that can serve at a beautiful understated backdrop to the food that will be served upon it. Mind you, the prices aren't inexpensive here, but the quality is worth it, even for just a couple of pieces to cherish and take home. It's about $60/each for a dinner plate, with prices hovering around that for most pieces. Heath also makes a range of wall tiles, and their manufacturing facility dominated by a pair of massive kilns is just behind the glass windows. Be sure to check out the simple display area at the entrance that details the history of Heath Ceramics, with a newsstand next door too, also run by Heath Ceramics! A bit of a non-sequitur there, but cool to see also!

Now that we've established that, let's talk about neighborhood small businesses and the importance of supporting your local communities. Is it less expensive to shop online? Possibly, probably, sure ok yes. But if you take a moment to really think about who is affected by your online purchase, you're not only adding additional funding for a seriously creepy billion-billionaire to shoot a very phallic looking rocket into space like it's a Braniff Boeing international flight...it was disturbing just typing that, fyi... ...you're also taking possible, and sometimes essential revenue away from your neighborhood vendors and shop owners. True story! I'm not rich and I'm not close to "flush with cash" either. I'm a teacher and usually buy things when they are for treats and special occasions. I hardly ever buy a frivolous spendy hip and trendy trinket from a cool gift store. It's rare. (I'm also desperately cheap...just by nature.) But I will always buy my birthday cards from Teresa and Marcy if I can. And if they have the best gift that matches my white elephant/secret Santa needs, Wink will be the first place I visit. Even when I walk out the doors of their store with nothing, I feel like I had a lovely time meandering through my neighborhood store. I'm always welcome, I'm always treated as a friend. I truly believe our communities thrive when we make that extra effort to at least consider spending slightly more for a local purchase instead of picking up your iPhone for the convenient choice. Supporting your local small businesses doesn't always have to be done with your pocketbook. Little stores like this are like visiting a friend. They're just happy you came and want you to come more often. It's like grandma, without the guilt trip!

I totally understand the return policy and the fact that they don't want you taking photos so you can find it cheaper elsewhere. Are the things more expensive than Amazon? Of course! But they have put in the effort of having a charming store where I can find all kinds of great gifts, so I am happy to pay up. I don't always know what I want to buy for someone until I see it, and I really appreciate the ability to browse in person. Our son always buys gifts here for his host families when he travels, and we take all of our SF visitors here too and they always find something great. They have such an eclectic and fun inventory!

I walked out with two: the first, I walked right to within about 30 seconds of entering the store, and it was magically on sale! The second, I discovered as I browsed through the store so full of gorgeous finds, I could have stayed there all day. I didn't need that second one, but it was so beautiful, I was determined to find a place for it in my home, and I did - it is the perfect addition to my existing bed design. Aside from the stunning pieces in the store (absolutely everything is drool-worthy), the service was impeccable. I was immediately helped by one of the gentlemen working that particular Saturday afternoon. You know when a salesperson strikes just the right balance between being very helpful and leaving you be? That was him. His colleague was equally great. It would be easy for the salespeople in a store like this to be snotty at worst, and stand-offish at best. Given the population that likely comprises the majority of their clientele, this wouldn't be at all surprising. But despite walking into the store in workout clothes with pillow creases and smeared masacara on my face because I'd come straight from a massage up the street - let's just say, I've seen better days - they couldn't have provided better, more genuine VIP service. I like nice things and I LOVE great service, so I will most certainly return the next time I'm looking for something extra special and luxurious for my home (or someone else's)!
