Came to meet friends for the $12 burger & beer special on Tuesday, checked out early, but could have stayed for the fun of a comedic open mic night. Love that the burger option included the vegan burger, and one of the beer options for the special was a Blue Moon. Ambiance was relaxed before 7pm. Came here for comedy night which I found out happens monthly. It was very amateur but you have to start somewhere. That's how all those famous comedians got to where they are all at now. They have other nights such as trivia and open mic night. I went with no expectations and I must say the service was great and the bathroom was so clean (especially for a bar). I can only say how my specialty cocktail tasted which wasn't that great. I ordered the Jalapeño Watermelon Margarita. Yea, it had a kick to it like a spicy one. I should've expected it, but wish there was more watermelon inside of it. But I'll give them a benefit of the doubt since I didnt try their other cocktails. A fun spot in Sunnyside, especially on Friday Nights. If you're like me and you're a trivia fan, this is your place on Fridays at 8pm (grab a seat early, cause it gets busy if you want to be in the front). The trivia is fun, staff is pretty on top of things, and its all good drinks and vibes. I've been coming to Sanger Hall on and off for bar trivia for a few years at this point, and it's always been a pretty good time. Friday nights the place is popping off, with a pretty busy bar in the front and a stacked room in the back. Service is oftentimes a bit slow, as there's just a lot of customers on Friday nights. That being said, the cocktails and meals here are much better than your standard bar food. The veggie burger in particularly is a pretty big standout, and I usually stick to an Old Fashioned or some form of gin cocktail (pictured here). Lets start with the food. I patronized this place when it first opened. The hamburgers were of a good size. Not too big, not sliders like white castle. They had the crispy onions with the "special sauce," and perfectly cooked patty, and the appropriately sized, light buns. Decent fries. Not mentioning the stupid digital interface with customers, which is bad. Meaning only online service, grub hub, or other delivery services skimming off of you because the establishment doesn't want to absorb the delivery fee. So you pay more. Normal for today's restaurants, I suppose. Not only are they anti-non digital customer, but they hire idjits and don't care about anything other than what's going on inside (beer sales and bingo nights). No phone service because that means the staff needs to think on their feet. Too much to ask for, I suppose. I can't order and go pick up. I have to go there and wait. The waitstaff don't really know anything other than slinging beer. They offer a saturday brunch burger, but fail to tell customers that they offer that. On saturday. I went in on a saturday and they said "no burgers today." Ignoring the brunch burger. But who the hell stops serving burgers on weekends at a burger joint?!!? What kind of backwards business plan is that? I mentioned this to them and I get a convoluted email from the manager who obviously either didn't understand or was deflecting. Now? The burgers are overdone, a tiny amount of crispy onions, and the buns are larger and more dense; Very bready. The first time I got a burger after the "change" the bun was 50% larger than the meat patty. Mouthful of nothing but bun and mayo along with a small sprinkling of shredded lettuce on a burger? Now they just flatten the burger to make it wider, and the price has changed accordingly. Meaning more expensive. The food is average at best. Not exactly what you want from a non-chain burger joint. Ambiance? For a dive bar? Has zero character. I preferred the old Horgan's on Qns Blvd. Even the place across the street has more character. And they serve their food on wood boards. The burgers aren't good. Period. You'd be better off getting one from Shake Shack on Qns Blvd/ 48th. Their burgers aren't great, but they sure are better than Sanger Hall. read more

It's been awhile since I went back to Sanger and I've gone twice in the last month. The brunch has solid options and wow, this place is underrated for the burgers and wings. Their wings are perfectly fried and sauced (no rubbery wings here) and the burgers are so delicious though they only come with double patties. I'm a single patty gal b/c after some point, the burger becomes unwieldy and it's just a hot mess of a burger. Also, we have to talk about their sweet potato fries! THE BEST! It's not soggy and their perfectly crispy. It's my go-to though the regular fries are the perfect thin kind...decisions...decisions.... I rarely go to bars, but when I have an itch, I make an effort to go to Sanger Hall -- Wednesdays late afternoon is my sweet time. Obsessed with the wings and beer combo! I always get the lemon pepper wings + UFO White (currently for $13; used to be $10, but can't complain). The main two bartenders I see there are nothing but kind. They ensure you have everything without constantly checking in. Music is a little odd once in a blue moon, but it's usually a mix of alt/rock/indie/irish-folk. Come to Sanger Hall for the great food and drinks at good prices. I wish they had better service on Friday nights during trivia. The last few weeks, it's taken my two-top about ten minutes to get greeted. Then there hasn't been any warmth from the server, no "Welcome", "How are you?". Be sure that you have your order ready when the server comes by otherwise you won't see them for another 10+ minutes while they're taking care of other tables. During the most recent visit I wasn't able to get a second drink during the 90-minute visit because the server wasn't attentive and didn't notice my drink was empty. I had so much fun my visit to Sangar Hall one summer Sunday afternoon that I stayed well into the night, when even more fun came on via a carry-your-key ( karaoke) show. It's an all genders and whichever pronouns you identify with are welcome so come in your fanciest ball gown with your six inch lashes or like me your tank and flip-flops spot. I love it!!! Some of the show ladies were even nice enough to snap pics with me. Such an easy, breezy, wonderfully chilled staff. I've been to this place many a times. It's a cool place to go on a friday night and play trivia hosted by Pedar from NYC Trivia League. I havent tried the mixed drinks but there a decent beer list. Probably about 10 on draft and more in cans/bottles. The ambience is very chill and relaxing. During the evening it can get loud and the main bar area is small so it can get very packed. Came here for trivia, which is on a Friday here. I always love a good weekend trivia. The bar is separated into two halves, one with the bar, and a second room with more tables (and a smaller bar, which wasn't open the night we were here). We arrived and tried to get a table on the second side, which was full. A worker saw us looking for a table, and rolled out a half-picnic table for just us. It was an interesting and very efficient way to get more people seated with tables, and also made us feel like we were the commentators on the bar, since we had a half table facing the rest of the bar. This place is such a great place for a meetup. Situated in the heart of Skillman Ave in Sunnyside, this restaurant offers not only food and drinks, they have amazing events every day. I just ate at this restaurant. The bartender was great. The food was fine, though the fries had too much crap on them and not enough fries. Unfortunately, this is the worst place to experience harassment as a female-reading person. A man grabbed my shoulder and called me "honey." I asked him to stop touching me and tried to de-escalate the conversation. He and his date kept changing the story as to why he had touched me and why it was an accident. They would not leave me alone after multiple attempts to ends the conversation. I finally told him to shut the f*** up. He was interrupting my meal and seemed fixated on convincing me I hadn't been manhandled. The minute I told him to stop he got in my face, started physically threatening me, and told me he had played in the NBA (because this was at all relevant to the conversation). The manager came over and only listened to this very angry shouting man and his date, both of whom were claiming that, living in New York, being told to "shut the f*** up" was the worst insult they had ever heard. The manager paid for their full check, even as they both continued to scream at me and physically threaten me in loud voices. After they left, the manager came to my table and told me that I shouldn't have escalated things by telling him to stop. When I tried to calmly explain why that wasn't okay, he started in with sarcasm and derision. It was a horrible night punctuated by me crying in public because the staff at this restaurant had no interest in protecting me. My party (also of two) was charged for our full meal. Food probably deserves three stars but holy cow this is not a place that handles sexual harassment of customers well. As you can see from the restaurant's response below, the other customer's persistent harassment was an "apology" and my demand that the persistent harassment stop was apparently not acceptable. The manager did not think quickly; he allowed a customer to repeatedly threaten violence toward another customer in his presence and then scolded the customer who was threatened, which they are doing again in their response to this review. Then the manager came to the table and made sarcastic comments at me rather than showing concern for my well-being and safety. They clearly have no interest in changing or making an effort to make customers who are touched without their consent on their premises feel comfortable or safe in their restaurant. It appears that they would prefer to insist on a false narrative of events that they were not present for. I guess this is a great place to go if you like to harass people and then scream at them when they tell you to stop! That's a demographic that needs service, too??? I guess??? read more

Sanger Hall could be great...IF they were family friendly. Bartender, Scotty, came in and yelled at parents and kids "This isn't a f'ing Discovery Zone, we cant have kids running around!" Our kids were already being scolded by their parents. I ask for the check because I was very uncomfortable and he proceeds to yell at me waving his fInger in my face. Newsflash, every person in the bar at 4pm was a parent who lives in Sunnyside, so you might want to reconsider who your clientele is if you want to stay I in business. Last time I checked you needed $ to pay your bills and staff. The last time i was there was Aug when my husband played a gig there, and we packed the bar with our friends and family on a Sat night, and 90% of the customers that night were my friends. Tried this place out for the first time the other night and was really happy we did! Had the pickled martini, which was awesome. We each tried a different burger and I gotta say, we loved every bite.
