I had the grilled pork Bánh mì served with excellent pickled carrots, cilantro, jalapenos and daikon radish on a very good french baguette. It was warm, crunchy and mildy flavored. There was ample parking in a lot. The place was clean and modern with a few tables for in dining and had lots of other things to offer with a wide variety sandwich fillings. Very clean, open and airy in ambiance. Pretty good for the SFV, and almost as good as places in San Gabriel especially with high gas prices these days. $5 for a sandwich here. I always get a #1 and a #4. I eat one there and take one away. I've been here a lot and have always loved their food. Food wise, I've never really been let down. It's fresh and the food tastes good. I agree with everyone else. The only thing is that there always seems to be a lost in translation episode. I'm not a big fan of mayo so I always ask for "NO MAYO - MAYONNAISE" and on more than one occasion have I took a bite into the thing and mayo all over the place! I mean, I don't mind it, just don't prefer it. I'm not that picky but I don't get how I can ask for something and they never perform. Also always ask for extra peppers and always have to go back to ask for more. They are friendly and they aren't doing it on purpose so it's cool, but just kind of annoying. When I lived close to Sandwich Express, I would stop by all the time for a sandwich and sometimes a new thing from the deli. Now that I've moved away, I crave these delicious sandwiches soooo much. I was raised on Vietnamese food, as my mom is Viet, so I've learned a lot in general about Vietnamese restaurants- you can't expect sparkling floors, or super enthusiastic workers, but you can expect some damn good food. If you can't handle it, I suggest ordering it to go. I order the #1, which I believe is liver or something? It may sound odd, but oh, lord. The French baguettes (which you can buy a loaf of for $1.50, try it with Italian dipping bread sauce!) are so fresh and crunchy, and the vegetables, carrots, cucumbers, cilantro, some kind of pepper that adds the perfect kick to a perfect sandwich. Writing out this review has me now questioning whether or not to start some kind of weird passionate relationship with banh mi or to go get some as soon as possible. read more

It might not be the cleanest place around, but definitely makes great banh mi. Service is quick and portions are generous. Had to feed 10 high school kids, cheap, so of course I came here. Lee's was closer to where I was, but I think Sandwich Express is so much better. Got the combo(ham, cured pork, pork roll, pate) and the grilled pork. Both are good depending on what you like. I have eaten here a few times. The ground beef bahn mi is very good. A few weeks ago I had the shrimp and bacon bahn mi and even though I have had it before and enjoyed it this time it was it was not very good and tasted a little... odd. However the prinicpal source reason for 3 stars instead of 4 is that this restaurant is rated "B" by the inpectors. It is so easy to get an "A" that I rarely eat at "B"s (and absolutely never at a "C"). I wish the owners would put the small extra effort in to receive an "A"- I would feel better about eating there. I've been passing by this shop for a while, but never stopped to go in. I was craving sandwiches one night, so my boyfriend and I decided to give this place a try. It was empty when we went in, but immediately the cashier greeted us and recommended sandwiches for us. They didn't have the grilled beef (which we both wanted), so boyfriend resorted to the shredded chicken and I went for the pork combination. I normally don't like pork but decided to try it anyway. HUGE MISTAKE. The pork was rubbery, pate was a tiny shmear, and they all had a strong pork smell to it. I needed my hotsauce fix to mask the smell and taste, but apparently, they ran out of that too. The only 3 bottles of hot sauce were all empty. Even the chili oil bottle was almost empty. The baguette, according to my bf (a bread fanatic), was fresh though. But all it did for me was cut the insides of my mouth. I will never come back here. read more

thanks to my nail place for this recommendation. one of the manicurists pranced in with a baguette under his arms. it looked fresh with a nice crust. they got it here. that's all i could think about while my cuticles were being cut away--warm french bread. in a rush to get to this place, i ruined my ruby red polish. but it was worth it. the grilled pork ban mi was huge (good enough for 2) and delicious (only $3.50), iced coffee was like cocaine ($2.50) and the baguettes, while not the best, were the perfect texture--great for making sandwiches, and at only $1 a pop, who can complain. read more

My friend bought banh mi here and found baby maggots in the cold cuts!!! Yikes!! They re-use old meat (cold cuts) from previous sales and when sales are bad then you get old meat. My friend told me "I think they want me to get more proteins from these maggots" lol read more

Customer service, there is none unless you speak the language, even the hand written sign on the door is not in English so I have no idea what is says. I asked for a Passion fruit w/boba, the guy takes my money then takes to order of the guy behind me, then gets the guy 2 baguettes, I didn't mind, it was quick, but then he starts making the same guy a sandwich, seriously? I thought maybe this drink I ordered takes a while to make and that's why, but no it was all of 15 seconds. I felt like he put the other customer before me because he was Asian or simply because he was a man. I have no idea which and wanted to ask but just left feeling discriminated against. With so many places in the area selling Vietnamese sandwiches you would think customer service would be a priority but not here. Never a smile, and you feel like you have to hurry the f up and place your order. I've been here many times but after the other night NO MORE! They post online that they close at 8:30, I got there at 8:10 and they were already cleaning up. When I asked if someone could help, no one even turned around to acknowledge me. Old lady came out from the back and sat in front of me, I asked if she would take my order and she grunted, then the 2 dudes that ignored me previously asked me what I wanted in a pissed off tone. I was just going to leave but this dude was obviously upset he had to take my order so I decide to f his day and made him make me 3 sandwiches. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR HEALTH. I'm the kind of guy that eats at the shadiest of taco trucks happily, but this place is something else. The restaurant smelled of trash. Looking behind the counter, meat and vegetables littered the floor and were underneath the cabinets, and looked as if they had been there for weeks. I paid 18 dollars for 2 sandwiches and threw them away simply because I was very concerned about getting food poisoning. As someone who has worked in kitchens previously, if a health inspector was to walk through the restaurant, they would close it down immediately. Beyond that, the cashier tried to charge me 68.00 for 2 sandwiches without telling me. When i asked why the receipt said 68.00, she said that i ordered 12 sandwiches and that's how much it cost as if it was my mistake. Whether it was a mistake or intentional, I was blatantly overcharged. Now, common sense dictates that 2 people wouldn't order 12 sandwiches, and even if they did, I would imagine they would ask to confirm. Essentially, I believe they would have given me the 2 sandwiches and let me walk away with a 70 dollar charge to my card hoping i wouldn't notice. I almost never complain about restaurants and love supporting small businesses, but this is genuinely the worst dining experience i've ever had. If you make the mistake of going here, i'm sure you'll come to the same conclusion i did. read more
