What a fun new place! (New for me!)…read more The burrito was a whopper, and the tacos we got were filling as well. Loved the brownie dessert and the mango guava agua Fresca too! All in all, great meal and a great price. Two drinks, two dinners and a dessert for $48 before top.

We read a lengthy glowing review of La Reforma in a recent ABQ Journal issue and had high hopes of…read morefinding something similar to the tacos we used to get in and near Cuernavaca, Morelos where we lived 2008-13. Sadly, we found kind of a mixed bag. First, the standout items. The margaritas were fantastic; some of the best we've had in the USA and extremely generous. The pinto bean sides were some of the best we've had since returning to the States in 2013. Perhaps not quite as great as those of the shuttered El Cotorro but still stellar. Next, the tacos. We tried only two of the several tacos on offer - The El Pastor and the Pescado. Both were served in what was called "corn tortillas" but these differed from virtually any corn tortillas we've ever had in Mexico or elsewhere. They were at least twice as thick as your typical corn tortilla found in just about all Mexican taco places in Mexico and elsewhere. The consistency and taste were quite different from your normal corn tortilla also. In fact, they really didn't seem to have much taste at all, of corn or anything else. Now to the fillings. At the aforementioned El Cotorro, the meat for the Al Pastor tacos was cooked on a vertical rotating spit which was the only way we ever saw it cooked in Mexico. The meat La Reforma used in their al pastor tacos was more chunky and way drier than any we ever had in Mexico or at El Cotorro. It didn't taste similar to any al pastor tacos were ever had in Mexico. It also kind of seemed like it wasn't cooked recently whereas in Mexico you can watch the cook with a large knife carve off the meat from the vertical spit right in front of you. Usually the time between the carving and it sitting in front of you is under 10 seconds. The fish taco at La Reforma was disappointing. The fish resembled a fish stick but one without much flavor. We wouldn't order it again. We gave the mini-churros a try for dessert. Because they were so small, they were way crispier than your typical regular-sized churro. We might return but we'd skip the al pastor and the fish tacos and try some of the other tacos. But we strongly suggest that they dump their current "corn tortillas" because they're not that good. Way too thick and virtually tasteless. Lo siento. Kudos for the margaritas and the beans. The rest of what we tried didn't live up to the recent glowing review in the ABQ Journal.

Food: 3 Beef Carpaccio: Although there wasn't much acidity to balance the creamy and decadent taste, it somehow worked for this dish without making it too heavy. Piñon Crusted Sea Bass: The fish was perfectly cooked with a crispy top and flaky moist meat. The quinoa was unremarkable. Pan Seared Scallops: The dish comes with 3 well cooked scallops. The risotto was not very good. Bison Lasagna: This was a warm comfort dish but wasn't anything special. Braised Lamb Shank: Our friend got this dish and it was served cold. The flavor was good though. Fig & Honey Cheesecake was what we ordered but we got a standard cheesecake with pomegranate sprinkled on top. Although tasty, we weren't told that the cheesecake would be a different flavor. Service: 4 Our waitress was very nice and attentive but a little awkward. Ambiance: 3 We were in a private dining room so it's hard to judge for the rest of the restaurant, but it sounded quite loud whenever the door opened up for the servers to come in. The bar area by the hostess stand seemed like a nice place to get a drink and chat though.

The restaurant itself is very cute and the mood lighting is perfect. We got a bottle of Bordeaux and it was definitely a favorite amongst those of us that tried it. We were seated in a big booth which I liked because I like the privacy and space. Interior was tastefully done. Just the right amount of class without over doing it. My girlfriend loved her salmon. My filet mignon was cooked perfectly as med rare and it was very good and seasoned to my liking. The lobster tail a good size and was also on point. I will say our sides were a room temp when we got our plates. Our server did let us know of a delay of getting our plates because they had to redo the lobster tail because didn't come out to the chefs liking (which I do appreciate, because the lobster was so good and wasnt rubbery). The sides were very average. We had creme brulee for dessert and it was ok. I just had Trader Joe's flan the night before and it was really good, so I thought the creme brulee would satisfy my craving. I would go with the TJ flan over this brulee. Overall, it was a nice meal, the main dishes were really good, minus the room temp sides. I will say this, this last time I had steak and lobster together was at Ruth's Chris, I remember that the lobster tail was small and over cook and my steak was good, but could have been better. So the Surf and Turf here is a win for me.

The prices seemed reasonable and on par with other places, if not a bit less and the selection was pretty impressive- it was hard to decide what to order! The interior decor is also really nice with the High Desert vibes you would expect from the name. We each had one of the specialty burgers (Valley burger and I forget the name of the other one). They were both very tasty and the portions were generous. They have amazing fries- both the regular and sweet potato. Service was great (it was so busy we had to sit at the bar since we were in a little bit of a hurry). We plan to add this place to our rotation as there is a ton of selection that looks amazing and they have a pretty decent looking happy hour food & drink specials too. I couldn't get a good look at all the taps but that selection also seemed to be pretty impressive compared to what you see elsewhere. A good first impression and am looking forward to checking out more of the menu!
