I loved, loved, loved this place. I wish I could give iy 6 stars. I must admit that it was difficult of me to find in the mall. But, I just gave them a call and they guided me right in. They even meet me outside and met me. So, FYI, the place is located on the second floor of the mall, down from the food court and across from Aldo at the end of the hall. The place is very clean and organized. The staff is uber friendly. Top notch, grade A employees. They could not have been nicer. I made an appointment online earlier in the day, but even though they do accept walk-ins, I highly recommend reservations. They make thing a a lot easier. You only go with your group, no matter if it is only 2 of you or 6. They do not put you with others or combines groups. You should arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time to check in, and get set up. When you arrive, you first check in at the kiosk/sign waiver and then they suit you up with ankle and wrist sensors, a vest and backpack, a headset and of course googles. You do have to wear your COVID mask during your session. I had an issue with my goggles fogging up due to my mask. I recommend wearing either a gaiter or some type of none fogging mask to really enjoy your adventure. You start off with a tutorial and then you roll right in to your adventure. You can choose between 4 different ones. I chose the most popular one, Deadwood Mansion, which is some type of zombie one. It was awesome and so realistic. I thought that people screaming in the trailers was fake, but oh no, it is real. You think you are really seeing and feeling the zombies and rats. You vest vibrates if you are hit to add to the realism. If you really get into it, then you will probably finish with a light to moderate workout feeling. My session lasted about 30 minutes in total and I was sweating afterwards. After you are done the person in your group with the highest score is crowned (literally) the MVP. You then take a selfie, remove your equipment and head back to the lobby where they show you your scores and video on one of the televisions. You are also emailed the score and videos to view at home (included with admission). I give this activity my highest recommendation and could not have had more fun. It is not your ordinary thing to do. There are not many places like this out there. I hope that this catches on and they bring this to Indianapolis. I would love to do it again. read more

So this is the 2nd time i've been to Sandbox VR at this location. The first time we did Amber Sky and we had a blast. Everything worked fine. The rules were explained clearly and the conductor was informative and attentive. When there was something wrong we would communicate with the conductor (i.e, audio issues and it was addressed real time). We had so much fun we booked another visit today for 6 people for Deathwood Valley. When we arrived this time around, check-in process was the same, everything was good until the actual game play. The conductor though was a nice guy, however, he absolutely did not do his job. There was static on the audio before the game even started and we told him at least 10 times and it was NOT addressed at all. We had to endure the static during the entire game. Next, within 5 minutes into the game, my daughter stop hearing ANY audio from her end. We could hear her telling everyone that she cannot hear anything. I even raised my hands a few times but the game was NOT stopped to addressed this. It was like we were being ignored or not even payed attention to. For the next 25 minutes my daughter could not hear any audio. I even called to my daughter and did not hear a response from her in-game. So with that in the back of my mind, we continued the game and we ultimately finished. Yes the game was fun but it was as though we were there to fend for ourselves. Today's experience was not good. To top things off, and when we got our video, I couldn't even believe what I saw. Not only was the conductor IN THE VIEW of our recording for our team the entire time the recording was on, but there was a few times that he was just looking at his phone (CAUGHT on camera) and not paying attention to us while we were playing. No wonder why none of our issues got addressed. This is unacceptable and honestly laughable for any professional corporation. To Management: The product is solid. The game is fun (hence our 2nd visit). But if you have lack of oversight or training for your employees, you will never succeed. EDIT: 10/31/22 tried calling the store to talk to the manager to inform him/her of my feedback and the person picking up the phone told me that there is no manager on duty today or tomorrow but to try and call back on Wednesday. Yall have kids running the show I see. SandboxVR @ San Mateo continues to impress. EDIT: 11/2/22 So I was able to connect with the Manager today and we had a decent conversation. He apologized for my experience and said that my experience was not normal and deeply regrets it. He also had notified the employee accordingly on how the employee would felt if he was in my shoes. It was a learning moment for the employee. Nevertheless, I was only expecting the remedy to be a refund for my daughter's ticket as she was the one impacted the most. But he comped our entire team with a voucher to come back to have a true experience (without the employee in the video), I accepted and am scheduled to give them another chance in a few weeks. Amending my rating to 3 for now as management dealt with the aftermath of my rage in a professional manner. They went above and beyond to do what they can to make it right. They also did not dangle the voucher for hopes that I would amend my review. read more

Escape rooms: I seen't it. I enjoy it. VR Escape rooms: I haven't seen it. So I had to try it. Enter 5 virtual zombie fighting comrades in Deadwood Mansion at Sandbox VR. This review comes from me as a neophyte to VR, which others relatively new to VR may find relevant but those well-versed may not agree. My friends and I were greeted by the friendly staff at the front upon arriving 15 minutes early for our 7pm game. They briefed us on what to expect, strapped us up in the sensors on our wrists and ankles, and brought us into the green room where were equipped with vests, VR headsets, and guns. This escape room is not so much an 'escape' experience rather than a 'try to survive' game. The best way I can describe it is immersive Time Crisis (sorry if you haven't played this classic gem), wherein enemies accost you in waves from various directions and you and your teammates attempt to shoot them all in order to stay alive and last until you 'escape' at the end. At first I thought a 30 minute game would be too short, but because this is not a traditional escape room but a run-around-shoot-things-high-tension kind of situation, the half hour felt like plenty of time to play for both me and my friends, as we all came out sweating from the zombie high. Definitely go wearing comfortable clothes and shoes you don't mind running around and getting sweaty in. I recommend this experience to those who enjoy shooting games, group activities, and interested but not already super well-versed in VR. read more

I would say it was a 3.5 if that were an option. Since not we will go with 4. The service was good. We arrived 5 minutes early and were quickly set up to register and what not. We scheduled 5 and easily added a sixth player. The cost of $50 a person was not cheap. $300 for the hour for the 6 of us. Our equipment was good but it did take a minute to get us all logged in and my headphones speaker kept coming unplugged so I couldn't really hear everyone throughout the game play. The person helping us was good and stayed in the game room the entire time. It took about 15 minutes for us to get started because they wouldn't all sync up. We were 5 adults I'm sure it would be harder if it were all kids. The game play was fun enough. He did recommend not doing the star trec and try the alien invasion robot one. It was good. Went here with my friends and scheduled "Deadwood Valley" for 6 people. It started off pretty fun until the system started to lag and freeze a lot (which unfortunately was 5 minutes in). It happened pretty frequently throughout the whole experience especially when a zombie horde occurred. It started to take the fun out of it the more it happened and next thing you know it, the experience is over. Hoping that the systems improve so there's no errors like that in the future. A truly immersive experience, and one of the best VR experiences out there. A bit pricy at $50-55 pp for 30 min, but it feels longer and everyone is tired and sweaty at the end. The staff do a great job of walking you through what to expect and helping troubleshoot any problems. They also email you a video of your group playing afterwards, which is a fun souvenir. Recommend trying at least once for a fun team building experience or date. read more

We came here as a group of '5' people and absolutely loved our experience right before the pandemic (Ah the irony). Our group chose "Deadwood Mansions (the one with zombies)" and had a blast through the hour. A few callouts for groups - The kit is slightly heavier ..something totally manageable but to be aware of. - There's ample parking available as a part of the mall. - The instructions are crystal clear but as a group you still are fairly dependent on each other during the game and need to work as a team. We definitely plan to be back for another one soon read more

Let me break down how our day went while it's still fresh in my head (but trust me, our experience is unforgettable) We reserve Amber Sky for a party of 5 at 10:15am, and when we get there we ask if it's possible to add another person for a total of 6. The dude who checks us in straight up says "no." Ok... could've worded it a bit more nicely but understandable. Then someone in our group asks where the bathroom is. Same guy who checks us in says "you're not gonna make it in time to the restroom. Hold it in." Like, what in the actual fuck??? At this point, we don't wanna bother talking to this guy anymore and we finish checking in and putting on the gear. Then we go into the green room and it seems like it'll be a fun experience. We put the backpack and helmet on and we're in some VR waiting lobby. Everything looks really cool and we're pretty excited. Then we end up waiting about 20 minutes because one of the backpacks isn't working correctly, so that takes awhile to fix. Once it's fixed, we get the guns to start practicing shooting. Then guess what? The guns don't work at all and our entire experience is paused. We're standing there waiting for about 30 minutes with NO UPDATES from any employee on what's going on, what's happening, etc. The guys are just standing there trying to fix it. We eventually ask what's going on and one employee (Gabe) is nice enough to tell us what's going on and to come back later while they try to fix it, and that they will call/text us when it's ready. Bummer, but we get that technology has its problems so we go downstairs and eat at California Pizza Kitchen while waiting. An hour goes by and we don't hear back at all, so we go back to check in on the status and Gabe greets us saying that he was just about to call us. So we put the gear back on, excited to play, AND....... one of the helmets don't work....... Like, seriously?? Another 15-20 minutes go by and again, no updates or communication from the employees. We don't even know if the guns were really fixed because you have to have the backpack and helmet working first. What's crazy is that the helmet was working before when we first got there. At this point, we're sick of waiting around and call it off and ask for a refund. We see Gabe and another employee and tell them that we're not doing this anymore and ask for a refund. Guess what, they can't even refund us!! The other employee has to call their district/regional manager and that manager reaches out to us to do the refund. Gabe was extremely apologetic but the other employee tells us that our refund is a MAYBE depending on what the manager says? No dude, it's not a matter of IF. It's a matter of WHEN, because we for sure are getting our refund. We didn't even get to play any VR game so why are we paying?? So after contact infos are exchanged, we go home. I want to take this time to call out some specific employees: @Gabe was an absolute rockstar and really doing his best to be professional and responsive with us in a shitty situation while being the main guy who was fixing everything (because the other guys didn't know what the hell they were doing and kept asking him for help). @Dylan, the guy who was in the green room with us and the employee who checked us in (didn't see his name tag unfortunately) were the absolute worst. It's been a looong time since I've had customer service this shitty. Absolutely no communication, no updates, no energy, no motivation to work, and no customer service friendliness. I don't know what what's going in your guys' lives to be so miserable, but leave your baggage at home and don't put it on us. We were there for 3 hours from 10am to 1pm and got NOTHING from this. Eventually the manager got back to us with a full refund and offered a free session. But after this, we're not sure whether we'll go back to be honest. Thanks for listening to my TED talk. read more

100% recommend Sandbox VR to everyone!! This interactive game is great for people of all ages. It literally is SO MUCH FUN. Sandbox VR is located inside Hillsdale Mall so y'all already know there's plenty of parking available! You'd want to check-in about 15 minutes early to sign in and prep for instructions. After all, you don't want to lose time playing! My bf booked Amber Sky 2088. Booking online is extremely easy and there's plenty of time slots available for same day booking! It was my first VR experience and honestly didn't know what to expect. We checked-in in the tablet, signed a waiver, and one of the staff greeted us shortly after. After getting geared up, we were basically "in the game" lols. We were basically shooting aliens and bugs. There wasn't a dull moment. We were shooting, ducking, shaking our legs, and laughing through the whole time. It really is an interactive experience haha. Hands down, Sandbox VR is the best date night I've had in a while. I grew up with video games, and I've always loved shooters. So this was highly anticipated as I geared up with my friends. Here is my conclusion: It's 2023, why does this look like it's from 2013? Now if the visuals were lacking, you would think they did that so the gameplay would be buttery smooth right? Wrong. There was constant dips in frame rate or downright freezes to the game and sound for 1-2sec intervals. Any time there was a massive hoard coming, I was ready for the eventual blackout as if I got hit by a flash bang. That's when you just hit every button and spray the bullets everywhere to ensure you don't get hit. What I don't understand is why load up the entire environment with so many baddies if you don't have the ram/processing power to handle it. Less is more. Create beefier enemies, make them more dynamic. They do this with the boss fights, but they can decrease the waves and create more challenging underlings. The best parts of the game are the cooperative aspects. Trying to revive your buddy when a hoard is literally breathing down your neck is hilarious. Needing at least two people to hit a critical point on a boss to prevent him unleashing an attack is very gratifying. Or trying to outperform your comrades so you can bask in glory during the after-action report is weirdly satisfying. Overall, the experience was fun and novel if you've never done a VR before. But it's too expensive for what it's offering. You can literally sit down with your friends with a console or PC and get a more rewarding and lasting experience. The 30min that you're in that room is constantly jarred by the lag, taking you out of the supposed immersion. If the price tag was half of what it is, this rating would be 5 stars. Sure. Try it once. But I don't think I would be coming back until 2033 to see if things are different. read more

I almost booked a session while I was at their Hong Kong location, until I saw they were opening one in the bay area. Little did I know it was so close to home! You'll spend the first 15 min gearing up, selecting weapons, and watching a tutorial. You can even declare a captain/fearless leader. Then for 30 min you are immersed into a world unlike anything you've seen before. Deadwood Mansion is just as you'd imagine it - a dark room surrounded by hordes of zombies and other creatures that may or may not latch onto you. Yes, you CAN feel what's happening in the game! And if you die in game, your teammates can resurrect you. Curse of Davy Jones allows you to choose your own character as you journey through a mini-quest for treasure. I recommend this room because it requires more teamwork and strategy than the former. My team completed this room in 20 minutes, which meant we did not get the full 30 min session. We were completely fine with this though, since we did both rooms back to back and we were starting to get dizzy. Overall it was an awesome experience that I'd recommend to everyone. They send you home with 30-second clips of your gameplay so you can laugh at yourself over and over again. Looking forward to their next release! read more

Terrible customer service. They are very time sensitive so if you are late by more than 5 mins, you lose your spot and money. I understand that and therefore we were there on time. But there was no one at the lobby to help. Waited for few minutes and found out self service kiosk for sign up. And then waited a few more before I found out someone to help with. But they denied us the game because we were late!! If they are so time sensitive, why not put someone in the lobby to help the customers! I fought with their manager but they did not accommodate us. The best I could get was get my money back. So all that excitement and one-hour drive to get here was for nothing! Never coming back to this place again. read more

This was part of a surprise weekend vacation for my hubby and we both loved it! Such a unique date idea!! It absolutely gets your heart rate up and by the end of the game we were both sweating (I'm not kidding, literally sweating). The vests are truly sensory and pick up any hit you take (whether it is from a bullet or a zombie clawing at you), the guns also vibrate and have a little recoil as well so you really feel everything! This place is so much fun. I first visited with a friend and we played Deadwood Valley. Loved shooting at zombies. The employees were friendly and helpful. The place was clean and well-ventilated. I had so much fun I came back the very next weekend with three teen boys and my sister to try Deadwood Mansion. Again, we had a blast. It is so fun when the VR comes on and we look like an elite squad out of Halo. It is so much fun to play with each other battling zombies. I plan to return and try the other games. read more

Awww, so sweet! My husband planned a surprise date night for us at Sandbox VR. He kept me guessing as I found a spot in the mall parking structure. We hung out in the food court until it was time for our reservation. He decided on the Davy Jones game because I recently played a pirate in our D&D campaign. The lobby of Sandbox VR reminds me of the Apple Store. Very minimalist and high-tech. The whole registration process was smooth. I forgot the name of the "agent" helping us through our experience. He used to work in military surveillance or something like that. Though he hasn't worked there for long, he was very well-spoken, calm, and helpful. The headset and backpack wasn't particularly comfortable, but I don't think that was the intention. I had to repeatedly get my headset adjusted. Fortunately I wasn't wearing glasses... that would have been painful. The game was fun (despite my screaming the whole time) and our facilitator did a good job providing instructions. The graphics were insanely real, and I enjoyed the VR experience. I get overwhelmed with things like this, but I'm glad we went. Towards the end of the game, there was a ton of lag with all the demons trying to attack us at once. I'm a little frustrated that it prevented us from winning. The recap video was cool in the end. My husband and I hung out in the lobby for a bit afterwards so we could recover from the motion sickness. Stay hydrated! Maybe next time I'll try a different game in a different Sandbox location. I didn't realize how many there were. To my understanding, the company is relatively new, so I look forward to witnessing the future of VR! read more

So funn! I came with a group of 5 and we did deadwood valley. We got to choose our weapons- (there's not much to choose) then we were brought to the room for the game. Everything went great! I would suggest having the staff give more instructions or directions in the beginning, or even a brief intro to the game because once we're in it, we're all just sorta amazed and not listening to the story haha Otherwise, everything was fun and we wish it was longer because we'll just keep coming back for more :) This is a great place for team bonding or just a little family activity. read more

I've been here twice and I'm giving it 2 starts because you really can't go wrong with the VR experience. It truly is amazing! But they aren't very good at the business side of things. I booked a 14 person slot as a Christmas present for my workers. They said they would send me an email and I could pay for the time and be good to go. When I never received an email from them, I called to follow up and they told me they have no record of my reservation and said the time is taken and they were booked for the rest of the day. They said a manager would call me back. Never got a response from anyone. I've called asking to speak to a manager. The manager apparently is never there. You'd think if someone was willing to drop $700 for an hours time, they'd at least get back to you, but nope. So if you ever book this place, just make sure you get an immediate email or you might as well forget about going. read more

The best decision we ever made! We chose this place to celebrate a friend's birthday (and because I really wanted to try it out). Our group chose Deadwood Mansions (aka zombies galore) and it's not as scary as I thought it was going to be, but it definitely got the heart racing. Paolo was our guy to help us out with everything in our VR experience. Super friendly, very helpful, and kept everything light hearted and joked around with us. Our group was non-stop screaming and laughing throughout the whole experience. We didn't know there was going to be 2 trailer videos created for us and it definitely captures our ridiculous memories. The whole experience was about an hour. Some prep time, training, 20 minutes of actual play, and post VR experience time. The headset was a little heavy for my face and felt a little uncomfortable throughout play. 10/10 would recommend and we're definitely going to be doing this again. read more

My 6 player team survived Deadwood Mansion. Although mission failed, we had a great time. Those who worked there 4/24 4 pm were awesome. Gameplay was fun and exciting. We died at a difficult boss level. I felt the game audio was a bit too soft, so it was difficult to hear the storyline. At the end of the experience, you see the player photos on the website, but most of the photos' quality were poor, so it was difficult to see player photos. I left this review on their website. Although so far the gameplay was centered in "one room", it was an overall fun experience. I would play again to finish the game. read more

Super fun experience!! It was my first time at sandbox VR ever in Hillsdale mall. I do recommend going in a group though. I went with my boyfriend but it was too much lol. Beware that the workers are rude and agitated but the experience is worth it. They weren't rude to me but they were incredibly rude to my boyfriend. If he made a mistake they would correct him in a condescending way. For instance, he put his vest on before following instructions and the guy was like "no no no you're not suppose to put your vest on yet." Look I completely understand these employees deal with a lot and rude customers perhaps but it is unnecessary to be condescending to nice customers. We were nice and calm. read more

Hands down best date night we've had in a while!! Saw an ad, I forgot where, and when the husbo picked me up from work I just suggested to do it some time. He booked it for the same night and we went straight there. 7pm on a Friday night we got there, and the dude that greeted us just let us know there might be another party before us so we waited until about 6:55. In the waiting area we put the sensors on our wrists and ankles and then they brought us into the room. They put a vest, the battery pack and the headset on you. Then hand you your guns and then it starts. We had the best time!!!! We did the Amber Sky experience and it was like playing Halo in vr. I loved it and we're already planning to go back to do Deadwood Mansion with a few of our friends. It was scary a couple times because your supposedly on a platform that moves and you're high about buildings. My knees were shaking from fear of heights but still it was awesome. Afterwards they put up your trailer on a big screen in the lobby, and it flashes your stats =) Things I would do differently: -put in my gamer tag for my name (it would look cooler in your replay lol) -wear something with less loose sleeves or a t-shirt (it can get a little hot and my knit sleeves were getting stuck on the velcro) -wear sneakers (I was wearing crocs lol) If you're thinking about going, do it. It's worth the price and I'm pretty sure doing it with a group is even more fun!!! read more

My very first VR experience and it was amazing! My friend heard that SandboxVR is a great experience so I had to check it out. I booked Amber Sky 2088 about a week in advance (many time slots available) and scheduled the appt to be 4:40pm to 5:20pm (per the email). I arrived there at 4:35pm and had to check in/ sign waivers through the iPads in the middle of the lobby. It's not really intuitive, but all participates have to check in/ sign waivers by selecting the name of the registered person. My bf and I got seated in front of Base 2 around 4:40pm. We had to put on the sensors on our wrist and shoes (they were Velcro so you could adjust accordingly). After putting on the sensors we stuck waiting until 4:58pm or so... This is probably my only complaint. The wait was due to the previous group either being late or took too long in the game somehow. Once we finally entered the room we had to put on a vest, this backpack with a strap, goggles (SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU DONT WEAR GLASSES BECAUSE THE GOGGLES ARE SKIN TIGHT!!!), and headphones with a mic. The employees went over the intro of the game and it was a bit confusing at first because 1) we couldn't really hear the employee speak loudly in the mic 2) having no VR gaming experience, it was difficult to follow the game instructions at first with multiple players (IE: they say place hand on the portal to activate X and i thought myself and my bf had to place our hands, but it only required one of us lol). Amber Sky was awesome though! So much fun and the visuals, sound and vibrations when you get shot were really cool haha. It felt like the calibration for the sensors we were were super on point too! There was a point in the game where it got trippy with my perspection between the game and reality that I was a bit nervous to test what would happen if I walked outside of a zone (not walk into a wall) but you'd know what I mean mid-game of Amber Sky once you play it! Overall super fun experience! I would definitely recommend it to anyone that loves video games - like the shoot ones you play at Dave & Buster's to play Amber Sky! It was a night with just me and my girls since hubby and our son was out of town. I decided to surprise both my daughters and booked a reservation for two virtual reality with SanboxVr in Hillsdale Mall in San Mateo. First of all, I love Hillsdale Mall. It is really neat, classy and not crowded. Most of my favorite shops and restaurant are in in this place including SanboxVr who has a newly renovated venue. The staff are all very pleasant and truly knowledgeable of the task at hand. My girls and I were very excited and they got us all set up with ease and comfortability. When it was our turn to begin, we had a blast! It was such an amazing experience that we wouldn't mind going and doing this over again. read more

Omg! I had a blast for my birthday!!! The girls working there were both great. They were friendly and attentive. I did have a small panic attack once the gear was on. (That's just me) The young lady assigned to us was really helpful and sweet about it. And I powered through. I highly recommend this place! We did the Squid Games. read more

Had a group of 7 come in and 4 couldn't even play for an hour. They kept restarting the game to no avail. My friends were from out of state and they refused to give them a refund after they were there for an hour standing around waiting for things to be fixed. read more
