Came to the Sandbar with my hubby and old friend we are visiting in St Augustine. I had a good time sitting outside on the porch. The cactus in the front are currently in full bloom, and there are so many aloe plants, and baby palms. It's just pretty to look at, and unexpected on the side of a bar back in my neck of the woods! From walking in the door, to drinking saltwater (a margarita), everything about the Sandbar was unpleasant to say the least. The venue was so promising, but the very ill spirited bartender instantly ruined any hope of delight we had brought with us. Not only was her attitude poor, but we witnessed her take "pills" multiple times during our short visit. This took our disbelief to a new level. Absolutely not! While the drinks were great I had to abandon them and leave because of all the smoke. The patrons were smoking. The bartender was smoking! Oddly while I was there a person with a dog got turned away bc it was unsanitary....but somehow all the smoke isn't?? My eyes burned for an hour after. Just gross. read more

I love this place. I'm local but if I were a visitor, this is the place I'd rave about. My girlfriend and I just moved in the area and decided we should pop in. So glad we did. Cheap 'n strong drinks how we like 'em. So incredibly friendly bartender and a bunch of drunk locals making us feel right at home. I'd say this is a cross between Tradewinds and the old days American Legion. read more

We were staying close so had an opportunity, for a change, to drink to our heart's desire because we weren't driving and could walk everywhere. We decided to do some bar-hopping with the four or five bars close to us. At the bar stop previous to The Sandbar, a couple locals told us to not go to the Sandbar...it was shifty or some such. Well, hell, that's my kind of place so now I'm definitely going! It was not shifty. It was laid back, full of locals and a couple bikers, and FUN! Everyone there was nice, the bartender took good care of us, prices were good, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. True, it was nothing fancy and a true dive bar, which is its appeal. As an added bonus, the owner had made fall-off-the-bone BBQ chicken legs and they were free in a roaster up front. I don't know why any of these were left by the time we got there because they were some of the best I've had...They were divine. And they ended up being our dinner LOL. Another reviewer said they only took cash. I do not know about that b/c we only paid with cash anyway and never even tried our card. So, check that out if you go. This place has all the prerequisites of a real dive bar. It is dark, the patrons are a mix of local drunks, bikers, lost locals, a dirt parking lot, tiny smelly bathrooms and really cheap drinks. It is open till 1 a.m. and you never know what might happen late at night. They have a cool juke box a few video games and some pool tables. read more

Like the previous review stated- this is a dive bar at it's best. Located directly across A1A from Crescent Beach, this bar has a beachgoing vibe to it- mostly populated by locals in board shorts and flip-flops. The crowd here is laid back, good southern folk who enjoy country music, cold beer, having a good time, and watching sports on the TV. There's no frills here- notice the shelves behind the bar built with plywood and 2x4's... but it works, and it holds liquor. The bartenders here will pour you a STIFF one, there's no skimping on the booze. They only have a few beers on tap, but lots of bottled, although the majority of people I noticed were having mixed drinks, probably because of the fact that you can get yourself TRASHED for under twenty bucks, thanks to the kindness of the bartenders. There's quite a few TV's around the bar, all tuned to sports. A couple of pool tables and a jukebox rule the back room. Up front, grab a seat at the bar and make some new friends. The bathrooms are tiny, usually dirty, but the men's room has some amazingly hilarious graffiti which will keep you entertained every time you enter. No credit cards accepted- bring cash! Overall, nothing fancy about this place. Just a good time to be had. Don't show up in your Sunday best, but be prepared to meet some cool people, have some great drinks, play some pool, dance, sing, and get fit-shaced. read more

Stopped in for a cold refreshment and had a large group of bikers that were on a memorial ride come in while I was there. The bartender handled the crowd quickly and everyone got their drinks fast. If you're riding in the area, it's worth a stop! read more

If you bring the pretention and need to see and be seen, then go down the road to Salt Life and drink overpriced cocktails. But if you love the best dive bars, this is the place. Like hitting the surf in a place that isn't your own local spot, if you are a tourist, respect the locals, respect the locale, and they will welcome you in like a regular. read more
