I had heard rumors about the cinnamon roll here. They're all correct. The cinnamon roll is, firstly, huge. I ordered huevos rancheros alongside the roll, and as soon as that roll came out, I knew I was packing the huevos rancheros to-go. Secondly, it's crispy on top and super soft and squishy on the inside. It doesn't go overboard on the frosting, and it comes out warm and toasty. The huevos rancheros was good too, but I'd definitely come back for the roll. Meeting friends in the Gallisteo area of Santa Fe and a local recommended this place. For starters coffee and a huge chewy, sweet cinnamon roll was split between us all. Delicious! We ordered 2 vegetarian burritos and a platter with "3 eggs anyway you like" and an order of biscuits and gravy. All were hot and excellent! Our server was on the ball and our coffee cups never went empty. The cute, coziness of the wood stoves makes this a great winter breakfast joint. Check out the live animals in the adjacent "zoo" and hit up the connected Seed Store for necessities for rural life. On the world stage the food here is only very good. But for New Mexico, it's excellent. I had a special, which was like eggs Benedict only in a burrito rather than on an English muffin. It was very good. My wife had the same and was similarly impressed. The cinnamon roll was also very good. Heavy wood tables are lovely. Service was good. Prices are ok. This has been my favorite breakfast place in New Mexico for over a decade. It pains me to say, as a former New Yorker, that their raspberry blintz, is the best I've ever had. They are famous for their cinnamon rolls (to start,) but their savory breakfast burritos and Eggs Benedict are top notch as well. You could describe this place as out of the way because it's not near any cities. It's on the Turquoise Trail between Albuquerque and New Mexico near the town of Cerrillos. You can't really call it a secret, though, because it's mentioned in every brochure describing the area, making it seem like a bit touristy, but I still got the feeling that a lot of people there were locals. In any case, it had a nice crowd for a weekday lunch, and it's not as if there was an office park across the road. The decor could be called quaint. Or cozy. As a male, I would call it "tiny" and "tight." Outside there are live birds walking around, most notably a peacock. And, in addition to being a cafe, I think there was an actual feed store there. Menu is kind of similar to what you might find at a tea house, fused with traditional American and some New Mexican. You have the standard enchiladas, some sandwiches, and then a whiteboard filled with daily specials. Things like salads, quiche, and various home cooking like pork chops and eggs. read more

Awesome place!!! I love visiting locally owned places that I never get to experience back at home. Well worth the drive from Santa Fe! Only open till about 2 pm I believe. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food and the server was very friendly. Loved the hash browns (but they were actually potatoes). The place looks like it was once a home and turned into a restaurant. Get there early because the tables were all pretty full when we got there t 10:30. Additional: Animal farm outside. The best breakfast EVER!! This is a hidden spot and when we were there it was full of locals. The ambience is really cozy. I ordered half blintz- it was so delicious with cream filling inside topped with raspberry sauce. I also had spinach bake over scrambled eggs served with hash browns. It was sooooo good and was served with their house made garlic bread. Husband had breakfast burrito. Their sauce is out of the world delicious. The french toast is one of the best we have ever had. It is a must order!! We also ordered cinnamon bun. It was crunchy on the outside and soft of the inside. It was huge though, 2-4 people can easily share it. Make sure to put some butter on it and it will take the flavor to the next level. All in all, great flavor packed food with great customer service. This is a must try if you are traveling on the turquoise trail. Hidden gem, that I really hope stays hidden ;-) read more

If you go just for coffee, a cinnamon roll, and an authentic New Mexican ambiance, this place would be 5 stars. The cinnamon roll is big, flaky, cinnamon-y and soooo good. The only critique is it could use a little more frosting for my taste. The other items we tried on their menu were so-so. Neither of our egg orders were cooked as requested so that was a let-down. The waitress was attentive. Outside of the quaint restaurant are lots of fowl, including pigeons and peacocks. That was fun to see, and would be even more enticing if you have young kids. read more

So, your on the Turquoise Trail looking for a place to satisfy your need for local, homemade, satisfying food? This place is pretty much a local hangout and above mentioned oasis for lost tourists on the Turquoise Trail...but CHILE HEADS...where are you? This is one of the TOP places in NM to get x-mas on your "feed store" burrito. I don't stray off this favorite too often (maybe once in a while I will get the fresh made biscuits and gravy, but that is rare) the burrito is just satisfying in every way! Start with a warm flour tortilla, stuff with real hash browns (not the icky shredded kind) and thick bacon, roll up and smother with plenty of awesome red and green chile, top with cheese and bake in the oven to melt all that goodness together...serve with garlic bread, just enough to sop up all that chile! DELISH! The coffee is excellent too! Service is prompt and attentive and as many of the fellow reviewers have mentioned the setting is pretty great too. As far as hours go, I think they are only open until 2pm every day...best to call ahead to be sure...and if it is a weekend a reservation is recommended...this place can get very busy! Its a cafe in front of a legit working feedstore...where you can stock up on all your farm and ferrer needs. Driving along 'Route 66' on our way to Santa Fe....see a lovely little house and a sign that says Cafe. Sweet. We could all use a nice cup of coffee. Pull into the parking lot and immediately I'm in love. Live peacocks in the driveway...normal, loud exterior that screams Adobe, and of course out in the middle of nowhere. We make our way into the little shop/eatery and sit down a great homey table. All we wanted was some coffee....which by the way was French pressed and absolutely the MOST delicious homemade coffee I've EVER had. Trust me, I drink a lot of coffee. I did notice a lot of other people enjoying what they were eating...everything from hamburgers to tacos to vichyssoise (random). Servers were so adorable and absolutely delightful. They also have some cute little chachkis to buy (ex. coffee mugs, postcards, local paintings....etc). The last time we were here was 10 years ago. We had fond memories of the food, atmosphere and peacocks Well today we returned ( around 10:30 am). This experience was as great as the last time. We shared the blue corn cheese enchiladas. The 2 kinds of chile were excellent as was the guacomole. Star took great care of us. We got their cinammon roll and half order of cheese blintzes to go. Ouch. The rube locals think this restaurant is the best, but in the 5 years I've had the displeasure of going here.. Not so much... It's quaint, and pretty much the only restaurant that has survived in the surrounding area forever... But one must theorize that the bulk of the customer base is people who are buying the chicken scratch in bulk behind the restaurant. The sandwiches are poorly constructed. The new mexican cuisine is hardly passable as edible, and the service is, well, not good. On at least two different occaisions I've found "mystery" ingredients in my take out orders, and you'd better phone in those orders at least an hour beforehand if you want anything warm in a bag to go... read more

I used to go out here with my family for mother's day as a child and loved being able to run around the peacocks, turkeys, and chickens...I don't know any other restaurant like it. I have recently started going again because their feed store burrito is WICKEDLY delicious. Chile is always on point, great bacon, and tantalizing potatoes. When we visited New Mexico last week, the trip to the cafe here was the culinary highlight for me -- unexpectedly so. We were staying in the small rural town of Los Cerrillos, which is about 25 minutes south of the edge of Santa Fe, and the San Marcos feed store and cafe is just about the first sign of civilization as you head into Santa Fe proper. The cafe was recommended to us by the people who owned our guest house in Cerrillos, since there are some fun animals out behind the restaurant for my son to see and run around with -- an emu, chickens, roosters and peacocks. They are only open for breakfast and lunch, and serve a limited menu of classics (eggs, hash, etc.) and then some Mexican specialties for lunch. From what we understood, the place has a pretty good rep among the locals, and they're almost demanding reservations on Saturdays and Sundays now. I had the San Marcos burrito, which was stewed beef and potatoes wrapped in a tortilla and smothered with green chile sauce (a must within the state of NM) and cheese. Goddamn that was good. My husband had ordered the corned beef hash with an egg over-easy on it, and that came out overcooked, but I'll overlook it since the burrito was so damn good. We had a fabulous, local, character-of-a-waitress who was great, and they have a nice patio off the main dining room with open windows and such. Definitely your local's joint, and not swank in any way, but just good honest local flavor and food. If you're looking to get out of the central part of town and take a short drive out, it's located out on the edge of south Santa Fe on Highway 14, or the "Turquoise Trail." read more

Stopped in for breakfast on our way from Santa Fe to Paa-Ko Ridge after hearing of this little gem the night before. Family owned and operated - wife oversees the cafe and husband the attached "feed store" which is equally impressive and extremely well organized like a local Ace hardware. Great breakfast menu highlighted by their homemade signature cinnamon bun which is the size of a small cantaloupe! Encouraged by staff to walk the grounds following bkfst where beautiful peacocks walk freely: Great experience and definitely worth the 25 min drive from the S.F plaza! read more
