On a recent visit to Madrid, a friend & I stopped at Refinery 14 for lunch. It's a newish restaurant in the space that The Hollar used to occupy. Same charming patio and interior. Food was good, but one star off for the snarky attitude of the server/owner - a youngish woman with brown hair in braids. We were puzzled at the snark. She was brusque with an air of being inconvenienced. Puzzling... Next time, I'll stick with the Mine Shaft Tavern - which has an amazing burger. read more

I have to keep updating my reviews, cause I keep trying new things on the menu and it's all incredible !! Yesterday I ate their barbecue plate and it was incredible but today I'm eating just the smoked wings and they are out of this world !! So GOOD We've all had black barbecue and we've all had white Texan barbecue, but this barbecue has some kind of a mojo ... a funky beautiful bent to it ~ Puerto Rican maybe ? maybe adobo influenced Anyway, I got a 12 pack of these wings ..ate 6of them for lunch and now I'm eating six more for dinner ....OMG actually seven more for dinner ! We drove the Turquoise Trail from Albuquerque to Santa Fe and passed through the small town of Madrid. We stopped at the Refinery and it was 11:30 when we sat down. They don't start serving lunch until around 12:10, so we ordered breakfast. My bestie ordered the Loaded Lox with a side order of two fried eggs and a Cucumber Soda. I ordered the Breakfast Tacos with no meat, but extra avocado, plus the Minty Watermelon. The day was gorgeous and we sat outside right off the road. Our server was very friendly and took our orders right away. We didn't have to wait long for our food to arrive. My eggs were very good and the corn tortillas were excellent. It came with Christmas - both red and green salsas. I typically don't like the salsas, but these were great. This is definitely worth a stop if you find yourself driving through Madrid! read more

What a joy it was to visit Refinery 14 for the first time. We opted to sit on the patio over in the corner in the shade, as it was a very hot day. The outdoor space is nice with many tables both under the patio and under the trees. The food was amazing! I am a long-term patty melt connoisseur, but I have begged off for many years because it's really hard to find a good patty melt. I opted to try the patty melt at Refinery 14 and was pleasantly surprised. I was served a fat, homemade patty with lots of green chile dripping with cheese. Of course bread and onions were also included, which rounded out the wonderful sandwich. Homemade potato chips were also serve served, as well as a pickle spear. I also opted to get a cherry limeade, which is way better than any cherry limeade I've had anywhere in the last 20 years. The service was great. We were attended to immediately upon arrival and our server was kind, competent, and friendly. The best part of the visit was meeting the Mayor, Galisteo, a black Australian Shepherd-looking dog. He came over and sat at the table with us and was very well-behaved and sweet. I highly recommend Refinery 14 and I will definitely be back as soon as I am able. read more

When we arrived into town we heard the live music (10/11/25) & cool atmosphere coming from this fine establishment. We decided to check it out after we were finished walking the quaint little town. Upon heading to our car we decided to pop in to grab a beer and listen to music to unwind... only to be met with the absolute rudest "hostess" we have EVER met. Walking into the garden area & we weren't sure if it was a "seat yourself" or "be seated" type of establishment, so I set out to find a waitress. Once I finally found one (mid 30's, white woman wearing all tye dye mismatched sweats & greasy blondish hair.) we politely asked her how we went about getting seating to which she told us it was self seating, as well as serve your own waters. She then proceeded to take 10 minutes to bring us a menu. When she gets back to take our order another 10 minutes later, we only order two beers, as we're in a hurry to get to Santa Fe for the rest our day trip. At this point the only issue we have is she doesn't seem to have any sense of urgency in her task to wait on her guests (considering there is clearly a rainstorm coming in and we're seated outside). So finally our beers come out, one was poured so poorly it was HALF FOAM, but we just brushed it off, drank our beers and waited for the check. 20 minutes pass and I can't get her attention every time she slinks through. So, I take I upon myself to get up and track her down. I find her at the bar thoroughly engaged in a conversation with her coworker. A conversation I waited for them to finish before I was finally acknowledged. I ask her for the check, she brings me a little machine. The bill was $13 for two beers. So considering she wasn't the best hostess and the fact that I had to track her down just to get our bill, I tip $1. Which I figured was more than enough considering SHE DIDN'T DO MUCH. She looks at me and asks "is everything okay" to which I reply "yeah everything is great!". She storms off and I assume it's because she headed to grab my check. So I tell her "No check is fine, have a great day" to which she YELLS IN RESPONSE "ONE DOLLAR ON A F**KING THIRTEEN DOLLAR TAB, WOWWW". At this point I'm absolutely taken aback, because who do you think you're talking to, little miss roll out of bed and come to work in the same dirty sweats you slept in? At this point our group has had it & a few heated words are spouted out, before we left this quaint little town with a bad taste in our mouths. Unfortunate after such a good time there... If you've made it to the end of this post, take this as a warning. This establishment is a Must-Skip. The staff is rude, the service is terrible, the live music was sub par at best and the beer was poured poorly & it's just an all around bad time. Save your money & your tips as they are clearly not appreciated. 10/10 will never return and will most definitely spread the word to any friends traveling through town. And to that "waitress", here's a tip... Gratuity is based off service. It's earned, not given. You were tipped what I felt your service was worth & I was being generous. You're lucky it wasn't a penny. read more

Finally a great breakfast option in Madrid! Dining room is clean and lots of outdoor tables. Staff are friendly, professional, and very efficient. Great menu options for everyone. Def recommend the breakfast tacos and Monte Christo for breakfast and the mini meatballs and New Mexican sandwich for lunch. Yummy. I'm celiac and they care to not hurt me.. so I appreciate having some gluten-free food available in town. (not a dedicated gluten-free restaurant, but they do have understanding and training to deal with it properly. Not all restaurants are this way.) Customer service is super kind. read more

Service today, Friday morning, was excellent as was the food! The mushroom breakfast tacos, the eggs over easy, the breakfast burrito and the biscuits and gravy were all excellent. The gravy had the perfect amount of spices and green chile! Coffee and waters never went empty as the service staff was jumping. The live music from the trio (bluegrass and John Prine, Johnny Cash, etc) was a beautiful touch. Spend some time shopping in Madrid after fueling up at this place. It's a great breakfast or brunch stop. We'll be back to try the Monte Cristo and the Overloaded Lox. Well worthy the drive! read more

Great breakfasts, and yes, I know it's a simple meal but their options are just right, from the goat cheese and berry french toast to the local burritos. All good. We were really excited to try this place because they are pet friendly outside, including dog treats and water bowls for pets. The food was very good, hot fresh, tasty. Red and green chili was hot and flavorful. Although I think their plates were a little lacking in portion size and presentation. For example, usually a montecristo is battered and deep fried (perhaps too heavy for breakfast) and served with the side of raspberry jam and some kind of side order. These were just the sandwich plain as shown. My breakfast burrito was very good with had breakfast potatoes sausage scrambled eggs and cheese. I chose to have the sauces on the side. Had I chosen for it to be smothered, perhaps it would have been a better presentation. My only complaint is that they are fairly expensive, but I get this is a tourist trap location. So glad that Refinery 14 has opened. I had breakfast there on Friday with friends. The service was outstanding. Kudos to the wait staff. We all ordered different menu items. The appearance and taste of the food did not disappoint. I am a carnivore. My biscuits and gravy were perfect with the right amount of spice. One of my friends had a side of bacon that looked delicious. She wasn't sharing! My vegetarian friends had great veggie tacos and burritos. I personally love the aesthetic of the metal trays with butcher paper. A good choice for the environment. I thought it made for a fun and funky food presentation.
