The food and service are good at Samurai, and the prices are a little more reasonable than the other places in Paso. That said, it isn't my first choice for sushi - that's Goshi's - but for the price, I visit Samurai a lot more than goshi's. Samurai even delivers. Finally got around to trying this place out as we had heard good things. The food itself was good. The server was pleasant and attentive. However there were a few things that I wasn't crazy about. First off, the rolls were a little on the looser side. I am used to getting really tightly wrapped rolls. So about 1/3 of my pieces would come apart when trying to pick them up with my sticks and dip into soy sauce. Also, we didn't get any ginger or wasabi with our rolls and had to ask for some. Most sushi places will have at least some amount on the plate. Lastly, our rolls were not all brought out at the same time. There were 4 of us and we each ordered 2 rolls. My wife's first roll was delivered and than about 5 minutes later we each got one of our rolls. Than about 10 minutes later we got our second.... Just a little weird as we weren't ordering meal courses. Again, most places I have been to will deliver the food all at once (relatively speaking of course). Again, good food for the price, but just a few things that didn't really sell me on coming back again as there a number of others available for us. read more

The staff and owner at Samurai are absolutely wonderful and very attentive to the needs of their customers. I have a two year old daughter and they accommodated to our needs right off the bat. The owner changed the channel to cartoons and brought over gold fish to keep her entertained. Not only is everyone nice, the food was amazing. Constant turnover among service staff, lack of prices on the menu, and just overall lack of professionalism. Several times my buddy and I have given up on this place and then gone back hoping something had changed for the better, only to be even more disappointed than the last time. The only thing that kept us coming back was the all-you-can-eat sushi and they don't do that anymore. The quality was never that good and the prices were just ok. There's a decent chance you'll be witness to a fight between the employees or the owner and employees, which was entertaining, but very sad at the same time. I absolutely love this restaurant! I order delivery to my office regularly cause I'm a fat kid and they are great all the time! You cant get faster delivery or better friendly service like, anywhere. I love this place!!!! We go here as much as we possibly can... My son is fascinated with the sushi chefs, and he loves to try all the different types of seafood... when he has asked in the past to try the octopus and eel they have given him some to try and now they call eel boy... LOL they know us the second we come in the door and they always greet everyone that walks in. The owner is almost always there, unless he is out doing a delivery, which he personally does. I just ordered delivery last night and it was prompt and the owner himself showed up at the door, and knew exactly who I was. We celebrate both my sons and my birthday there every year!! I love the tornado roll and crunch roll, my son is a huge fan of the Caterpillar roll. My husband gets a monkey ball every time we go, and also likes the Spicy tuna, baked TNT. I love being there when people order saki bombs because the owner will come out and personally serve them and count them down with the diners. BEWARE! STAY AWAY.....,... Wanted to try and went in for lunch. Upon walking in I thought I was in some hip hop club. Went with my 81 year old grandma and they were blasting music that was swearing left and right! After we were seated and brought our menus they changed it. Grandma did not like it! During lunch they advertise half off all rolls. I verified with the waitress and she said all special rolls, hand rolls and sushi was half off. We ordered 5 hand rolls. To be honest gave it two stars because the sushi wasn't all that bad. But, after we received our bill all the rolls were full price. I told the very rude manager lady that I was told all rolls are half off. She said yes they are except the hand rolls. After explaining that that's why we ordered hand rolls she said sorry waitress is new they are full price. I asked the waitress to come over and she agreed she did tell us this and the manager sent her away and said "she doesn't know she new." You pay full price. I said that this isn't right and I'm sorry she doesn't know but i was told half price, she said it's full price. Wow I was mad! She then said " you pay full price or I call cops!" What the .....! Are you kidding me. I have now just been threatened that the cops would be called on me! Paid my bill in full and in NO WAY WILL EVER GO BACK OR RECOMMEND THIS PLACE! Stay away.....far away! We went here tonight. Our experience started off great. The service and ambiance was so friendly anf welcoming. Pricing was very reasonable. We got our order to go because our son was not sitting and eating quietly. We didnt want to disturd other patrons, so we got it to go. Unfortunate because if you dine in sushi is half off. Anyway, we get home anticipating a great food. Take out the chopsticks, husband is already disappointed. They are the cheap wooden ones that you cant use for fear of splinters. Im still optomistic though. I set up my son, I ordered him the tofu bowl , expecting rice, veggies, teriyaki tofu. What we got was a rice ball and a few squares of tofu. Husband ordered beef teriyaki meal. I start with his miso soup, tastes eh. It's not bad, but it's not good. Weird cause I even like instant miso soup. Out of the corner of my eye I see my hubby trying to find a piece of beef that isnt fatty and chewy and gristle. The unedible pile keeps getting bigger. He and Iboth ate the tempura, it was ok. Nothing to write home about and definitely nothing to get me to go there again. Still have my caterpillar roll. After all of this I am still hopeful. What can I say, I'm an optomist. Now if you've ever had eel it is very, very tender. I grab my chopsticks ( mine, not their sticks of danger) and pick up a piece. Let me rephrase this, I attempt to pick up a piece. Three pieces lift up. I had to take a knife and cut them apart! I take a bite and had to spit it out. Was chewy! Chewy! And I'm not talking about the lovable Star Wars character. It was like chewing on rubber. So sad and disappointed. My reasonable sushi dinner was a rip off! The only reason I am giving two stars is because like I said, the service was warm and friendly. This is my neighborhood sushi place. We've probably been here hundreds of times since they opened about 10 years ago. The owners have owned several businesses in Paso Robles. They really put their hearts and souls into running this place. They are very generous, often giving free edamame or miso soup. Unfortunately, they have had some turnover with sushi chefs, so the food can be inconsistent and a lot of times doesn't look anything like the picture in the menu. But it's mostly good, always fresh. I love the salads - poke or sashimi you can't go wrong with if you like sashimi. The rolls are typical Korean style- lots of creative dressed up California rolls and baked stuff. Definitely a good value if you are looking to get really full and not spend a lot of money. This place is always good to bring a large group. We have come many times with 4-5 couples and with the cheap sake bombs and plenty of food, it's come out to $20-25 per person. read more

Today I went in and the same not very nice people were still there. The menus were sticky as was the table. The food was okay, but I could have gotten the same roll at the grocery store. By far the best sushi in town in my opinion. My husband and I go there every anniversary, birthday, holiday, etc. A couple times we've gone to some of the "nicer" places in town (i.e. not in a strip mall) and are never as satisfied with the food or the service. At other places we usually feel like we're being pushed into buying more drinks, more food, and they're just trying to raise the bill. At Samurai its such a relaxed environment, the staff is amazingly friendly and the owner is ALWAYS there to talk and joke around. Plus, its really reasonably priced. If you want to pay slightly more for the "ambiance" but not as good sushi, go to Yanagis. If you want awesome sushi and a relaxed environment at a reasonable price, definitely go to Samurai. BONUS: Just found out they deliver for free, this place is the best! Absolutely get the Baked TNT, it will blow your mind it is SO good! Two stars because the waitress and the manager (or owner?) were nice. It's a very casual atmosphere- which is fine. We ordered to go. I have eaten Japanese food all my life. I cannot remember the name of the roll but it was a spicy tuna, cream cheese, California type roll that was deep fried. I believe it was the number 25 or 29. We also ordered teryaki chicken and mixed tempura. The sushi wasn't really roll, it came with tempura spicy tuna topping and was more of a California roll, okay that's fine, but it had these terrible sauces one was an orange sauce ( maybe thousand island?) but between that and this like honey mustardy sauce it was definitely not to my taste. The teryaki chicken was NOT teryaki. I thought they may have forgotten the sauce, but I don't think they did because it was cooked in this soy type of (sauce) that really wasn't sauce, and there was a minimal amount. I can make teryaki sauce better than that, and I am no chef nor do I have much experience with Japanese cooking. The tempura, eh greasy. Nothing special but not terrible. The tempura sauce was very tangy, and wasn't typical tempura sauce. The miso soup was watered down. It just wasn't very good and I really wanted to enjoy it. I probably won't go back. If I had known I would have saved my $30 bucks. We don't have money to go out often and I feel like I really wasted my money. It's too bad because I like to support local businesses. read more
