We returned here for our quarterly lunch meeting for the Thursday special. Dependable service and no rush atmosphere are great for a catch-up. The food is consistently great when I order my usual chicken dinner. My friends usually order the same dinner, as well, and we take 1/2 home to enjoy the following day. Great value. My favorite place for mozzarella sticks. They are amazing. Six fresh cut with a crunchy breading served with marinara sauce. This is the menu item I look forward to the most. Follow that up with some blackened beef tips and I am happy. Even the surly waitress couldn't ruin it. (she urged me along pointing out that they had a wait for seating) There is a full bar and a pretty nice dessert menu as well. The place isn't very big but has a decent following so go before the rush dinner hours. read more

Sam's has been around a long time and in the restaurant business you have to respect that length of service. My wife used to live close to Highlander Point so she was a regular at Sam's years ago. My 40 year old son-in-law used to work in the kitchen for one of his first jobs. While they are in a different building now, she said it was wonderful to see their food and service is better than ever. In recent years, we were frequent patrons of the restaurant off Charlestown Rd that burned down so this was my first visit to the original location area. She ordered the Cold Water Whitefish Dinner with Baked Potato and a Side Salad. The whitefish is the best you will get anywhere.... and I mean anywhere. It is light, crispy, and absolutely delicious. Their side salad is large and includes cut up cucumbers, onion, radishes, and cheese. I ordered the Fried Seafood Combo with Slaw and Onion Rings. Wow, I had forgotten how wonderful those onion rings could be and shared them with everyone at the table. The clams, scallops and shrimp were excellent. We're so happy that Sam's was able to weather COVID. Now that we are back in Indiana, my better half can't wait to try the chicken tenders and the bread pudding. read more

My wife and I order carry out about twice weekly. It's also great to grab a beer when waiting for my order. We have our favorites but have tried other items. Everything we've ordered has been hot and delicious! The staff is awesome and always friendly. We will continue to go to Sam's as our main go to for dinner! read more

Visited this spot for the first time in a long time and was sadly disappointed. There was nothing wrong with the service or the lovely patio seating but the food. The food seemed very much generic across the board. Nothing to get excited about in this department. read more

Wow. Lunch yesterday. Food was good, service was fair. BUT! I'm getting on my soapbox. Sam's now charges a SURCHARGE if you use a credit card. Sam's menu prices have been raised several times over the last couple years. Pints of beer have increased substantially, to the point I no longer drink beer with my meal. All these price increases and you need to charge a surcharge??? How many people carry that much cash anymore? We don't. IMO credit cards are a cost of doing business. For years businesses have PUSHED the use of credit cards and now your punished for using them? IF we decide to go back we're going to write a check. Is that better? BTW, there's a upscale Mexican restaurant in New Albany that started doing the same thing a couple years ago. We haven't been back since and at one time it was one of our favorite restaurants. Also this same restaurant has scaled back to a smaller building and I'm not sure they're even still in business. Sometimes these independent restaurant owners spend a dollar to save a dime if you know what I mean! read more

Our party of two stopped in for lunch on our way to Louisville, and we both agreed that it could have been better and we weren't totally satisfied. They have daily specials and they also have a separate lunch special menu where the lunches range from $8-$10. I had the broiled cod which came with rice and steamed broccoli (add $1 for any substitutions). Everything I had was plain. Plain rice, plain broccoli, and plain fish - I felt like I was on some strange diet. My companion had the club sandwich which came with a choice of soup or a side salad. The soups were homemade and the chili she had was quite good. From the reviews, I'd hoped she was going to get the French onion that looks so good so I could sneak a taste. The sandwich was made with thick bacon and thick sliced meats, not your average deli meats, but once again was plain and lacked flavor. We spent less than $20 on the two meals so for the value the food was decent. However, I was not impressed with the layout of the restaurant. As soon as you walk in you are standing in the way of everyone in the middle of the wait staff area. We had to walk through the area with the dishes, fountain drink machines, and computers to even be seated. If I'm ever back I will request to be seated outside on their nicely kept patio away from all of the chaos. read more

We ordered carry-out from Sam's Food & Spirits a couple of days ago. I tried the salmon which was good, but small portion size, and baked potato that I could only eat half of because it was overcooked and burnt with a side salad that was fresh, but again, small portion size. As you can see in the photo, my meal didn't look appetizing as presented either. I'm glad we had sour cream at home because the restaurant forgot to include it. My husband ordered a fried seafood platter and enjoyed the small amount of fish as well as scallops, but he said everything else was just "okay." I didn't try the biscuit, but my husband said it was dry with absolutely no flavor. He was firm in his opinion that he'd rather go to a Red Lobster than give Sam's another chance. Potato skins are perfect pillows of soft inside and crisp edges with good real bacon bits. Potato soup was extra creamy, loaded with bacon and cheese on top. Blackened fish sandwich was not overly spiced, but tasty and flaky. Sweet tea is sweet. Desserts are a nice collection from a nearby bakery. The bread pudding is made in house. Went to Sam's on Monday night. We ordered the potato skins and waited to order dinner since we were all undecided. The skins came out quickly and were very good. Well done skins with lots of cheese and bacon. We all finally decided on the Fins and Feathers which is fried white fish and chicken fingers. The fish was perfect as well as the chicken fingers. I ordered fries and a salad with the hot bacon dressing. The bacon dressing is the best. Others had kale salad and salad with blue cheese, broccoli and mixed vegetables. All were enjoyed. The service was very good but it was a little loud because of a big group at a table. By the way they also have free popcorn. read more

While out on our Sunday thrift store shopping adventure we discovered Sam's tavern in good ole Floyds Knobs. Immediately we walked in and were greeted. Mom finally chose a fish sandwich and decided upon the Reuben. My sandwich was ehh and mom liked hers. I've had much better. I ate half and as always took the other half home to my dad. I also had a side of green beans with my sandwich. I'm not quite sure but they almost tasted as if they were soaked in coffee. However they were good. I would go back and maybe give something else a try. One thing that I wasn't to pleased with was our server just wasn't as friendly as I'd hoped. This place has been around for a long time...and honestly I think it's getting better again. The service is good and even though it's a small restaurant they have a large menu. Must have gotten the same waitress that served Carrie. As you entered a chalkboard had, oysters on half shell, rolled oysters and pan fried oysters. That's all it said, no price or explanation of sides or anything. We place our drinks order and quickly got them. When waitress asked for our order; I asked about the oysters. She said, what about the oysters? I said, they aren't listed on the menu and the board just has them listed. She then gave us the prices and that you could have a basket, a platter etc. I told her that I would have a rolled oyster for a starter, told my husband to go ahead and order while I chose my entree. Before he could answer she said to me, you want the clam dinner, more of a statement than a question. I said, no. She said, that's what your finger is on. I said, that will be fine. Stopped here for a late lunch. The sliders were cooked just as I ordered and were tasty. I took a gamble and ordered the vegetable medley for my side. So many places serve a really bland veggie medley, but Sam's got it just right. They were so yummy I might consider ordering double vegetables next time. ordered a Reuben sandwich. Worst I ever had in my 88+ years. Alleged meat and kraut was about 1/8 inch thick. No swiss cheese, Bread was very hard and was either scorched or burned. Chips were the texture of shoe leather. I did no make a fuss, in deference to a female guest and my wife. I think the sandwich was made a long time earlier and reheated, wife later told me her fish sandwich was barley edible. The quest chose the place, not me. I ate half of my sandwich and only 2 chips. This is typical of my earlier experience with Sam's at their old previous location at the Point. They should go to Beef O'Bradys to see what a Reuben should belike. $9.95 for a sandwich that did not have 50 cents worth of ingredients. Do not see how they stay in business, if this is typical.
