The humans took out the old deck and had to find a solution to keep us all safe from jumping from the second story of the house. Never written a review for a service before: A neighbor had some work done by Sam's Fence, it was a front door enclosure, I admired the work and called Sam's Fence for an estimate for a front door/porch secure enclosure. Sam, the owner sat with me for about an hour, diagraming the project, making re- comendations, expaining cost and material options. He was not trying to sell me anything, just what was the best product for my need. We agree on a price, the 3 x 6.5 x 7 foot high enclosure was constructed at his shop, a 3 stage coating process applied and delivered with crew to install in 25 days. The crew were quietly professional, extremely polite and tidy. If I could give Sam's Fence zero stars I would. I got a quote for a gate from Sam in March of 2018, in May the install was completed and within the first 3-4 months I noticed the gate began to sag. As time went on and the gate continued to sag, I kept adjusting the gate until it could not be adjusted anymore. Keep in mind I let Sam design and install the gate and did not question or make him stay within any budget. I paid exactly what he quoted, and he had full artistic license to design/build/install the gate. Fast forward to April of 2023, the gate now needs to be picked up about 2-3" in order to latch. I contacted Sam and he told me my options were to tie the post the gate hinges from into the building, or cut the post, bend it, and re-weld it. Neither sounded like good options because had he told me gate needed to be tied into the building when he designed it, I would have told him I wanted to avoid this. Sam was very unresponsive and despite my continued calls and text messages (I know they were received-Apple imessage) he finally comes to the site to see the gate in-person this June (2024). At this point I had already received another quote to repair the gate Sam had installed because I was getting tired of being blown off. Sam told me he would repair the gate by changing the hinges to allow more adjustment and told me it would be AT NO CHARGE. I was pleased that he was standing behind his work and asked him to email me a written proposal of the work to be performed. Sam asked me to text him my email which I did. The next three months were excuses on why he was "too busy" to send the proposal, and when I finally got him on the phone his attitude changed drastically! He accused me of trying to get him to perform the repair for free and was downright rude and unprofessional! I explained to him the only reason I had been waiting for his written proposal is because he had told me he would repair the gate HE INSTALLED that was now sagging. I get it if 20 years had gone by, but it was five years from the time he installed it to the time I first contacted him! Having dealt with gate vendors before, I would never suggest anyone use Sam's Fence unless they want someone who won't stand behind their work. Sam was wonderful to work with on our front courtyard entry gate. First, he showed up when he said he would, and that is huge for me. I value my time as well as other's, so I really appreciated the scheduling process which to me is indicatative of how the whole interaction will be. Sam called to confirm the day of, and showing up exactly as he said he would. From planning the design, Sam sat down with me for nearly 3 hours to help me pin down the design I was going for. Although I had an idea of what I wanted he help flush out the intricate details in such a methodical and organized manner. He drew several sketches until the vision was just right. His time with me during our consultation sealed the deal for me in going with him. Although I had received multiple quotes, I was looking for someone who was willing to spend the time to get it perfect, as this was a project I had been dreaming of for several years. His quote was not the cheapest, but also very reasonable (and not the most expensive either) and for me the real value came with a quality in his service that made the price very well worth every penny. The job was finished within the estimated timeframe as originally quoted, and I could not be happier with the result. It really is a classic, beautiful, bronze entry gate just as I imagined with every detail exactly as we discussed during our design session. I already wrote one review but had to write another as I am just so mad! We paid Sam 18,000. to build us a fence to keep our dogs in. We made it clear why we wanted a fence. The fence does look nice. We should have walked the entire fence however as there are not one, but at least two places where the fence not only does not get close to the ground but has quite a huge gap from the ground to the bottom of fence. Had I known this I would have asked him to bring the fence down to the ground. Our dogs have been getting out so we checked it out to fix it and it is so bad! My husband called Sam and complained but apparently he does not care and is not willing to do anything about it. Do not use this guy if you need a secure fence!!!!! read more

After paying more than a hefty price tag for our vinyl fence, not only does our dog still get out, our double sided gate doesn't work properly and never has! They came out onCw and did some crap repair and it has been a PIA for the last year! Now it's completely stuck and my lawn guy can't get in my backyard for 2 weeks! Mr Sams said he was sending someone out last week! That was a lie! Now he wants 250 at least to come out! Exact same latch on single gate works perfectly! It's a shame to have the only review showing for Sam's be someone that didn't have him do the work for them. Granted, timeliness of scheduling and return calls are important. That said, Sam's quality of labor was outstanding. His team came and put in a wrought iron fence and a matching gate over our front door. Having had work like this done before, I found Sam's design and labor skills to be exceptional. His team was professional and timely. The finish and quality of material was far better than my previous experience. He designed a custom gate for the front door to our house as well. Due to the way the double doors were positioned in the front of our house this was a very challenging endeavor. Sam was able to design and build the doors to fit exceptionally well against the house. The custom doors were very well built in the final product was steadfast. Sam's a custom artisan, a busy guy and runs a fairly small operation, The extra work involved in scheduling and coordination is the only reason I didn't give him five stars. Sam and his crew made a lovely job of our balcony rail. Sam spent quite a bit of time with us initially homing in on the design. We had some idea of what we wanted, but Sam made some great suggestions that improved the design with features that echoed our existing porch railings. The powder coated finish is flawless. We also opted for hot dip galvanizing as we live quite close to the ocean. The porch railings are still corrosion free after alnost 20 years because of this treatment. Sam and crew removed the existing wooden rail and fixed the new one in about three hours. This included moving stuff out of the way to get access, and cleaning up afterwards. read more

Among the best contractors we've ever hired or worked with, Sam is a conscientious, experienced professional. This 2nd project was far more complicated than our first, and even more so since it involved co-ordinating deck construction on a slope, landscapers removing bushes and roots, older fence demolition AND installing a temporary fence to prevent a curious German shepherd from taking off to explore. Sam was always ready to accommodate other contractor's requests to stop by the job and co-ordinate their efforts. Sam and his crew removed and re-arranged fencing at the onset, establishing measurements with our carpenter, and solid boundaries for the dog. When the deck was partly finished, Sam met with the carpenter to take measurements and plan for installation of fence supports on the deck itself. Once the deck was finished, Sam came for final measurements and the wrought iron fence was then made to his exact measurements....and we mean EXACT!! What precision with this man and his crew!! As a team, working with their "on the job" boss, their installation was efficient and exact! Sam was in charge, his guys knew their jobs, and the result was beyond fantastic. Clean-up was impeccable! I never knew a simple wrought iron fence could look so beautiful. Quality of product, exact measurements are part of this. But Sam is the difference: we wanted a new 6 ft. wrought iron fence to replace the 20 year old fence, approx. 100 running feet, a small gate to the slope at one end....and....2 of the 8 foot sections of gate sliding open on rails, away from each other, to access the planned 16 foot wide deck on the slope. To maximize the view, the deck's wrought iron was to be a little shorter. We gave Sam no plans....just used our hands to describe what we wanted. On the spot, Sam drew up a plan, and we approved it. Best decision we made was to hire Sam's Fence. His wrought iron, with it's simplicity and precision of gate movement on a rail set in a 32 foot run of cement, is an elegant entry to a view of SANTEE below and the surrounding mountains and foothills. Sam takes pride in his work, as does his crew, and he was always there when we needed him. Can't say that's true of other people we've hired for other jobs. We are more than pleased with our fence, and credit Sam's across-the-board cooperation with everyone for all this work being completed so quickly. He even postponed, at my request, the fence installation on the deck so the landscapers could finish an additional project. Doesn't get better than that for customer service and contractor cooperation. We will always recommend Sam's Fence in a heartbeat!!! And the dog likes him, too. read more

Sam just finished installing the custom railing on our 20x25' deck, and stair rails for the steps up to our entryway. The work is gorgeous. The welds are very well done, the design is just what we wanted and the railing fits so well with the work we've done on the outside of our house. Our deck slopes a bit away from our house (for rain runoff) and Sam put together a design in which the fence height at the house is shorter than at the end of the deck. It required a lot more work, but Sam assured us that this would look the best. And he was right. All the advice he gave us was right on, and he really took time, and made lots of drawings to make sure we knew what we were getting, and that we would be happy with the end result. It looks so good I get choked up looking at it :). I hope he takes pictures of the work to post, and show future customers.
