Allen is one of the most professional contractors I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Within days, we were able to get him to come over to our house and give us a quote. Not only was he making sure we understood the process, he was also doing everything to give us the vision we wanted. What we wanted done wasn't easy. It was an aluminum horizontal panel double swing gate, but it wasn't a gate between two concrete walls. The house was only on one side of the gate, with the other side being held by a post. Allen told us that he hasnt worked with that kind of material before, but was set on delivering an end product we would be happy with. After a few struggles, Allen managed to deliver a beautiful and elegant gate, exactly like we wanted it. Even though there were some I unanticipated issues, he spent days making sure that everything was done right, even to the point of paying for some fixes out of pocket! I contacted Allen for a quote on a rolling gate a year ago. He came out, viewed the area the gate would cover and provided a quote. I wasn't able to pull the trigger on the gate at that time, but did recently email him back to inquire about finally getting the gate made and installed. I am leaving this review not as a commentary on their work but because I did not get a bid from them and the reason why. If you want a bid, you better not mention that you are getting other bids. I made the mistake of mentioning this to the fellow (the owner I think-I've tossed the card) who came out to look at the job about 3 weeks ago. When he was getting ready to leave, I thanked him for coming out after he told me the time frame he would have the bid back to me. I then told him (as a courtesy) that we were going to be getting a couple of other bids so that he knew not to expect an immediate sign up. As I walked away, I heard him mumbling under his breath in an unhappy tone as he packed up his truck, (but plenty loud for me to hear), "you get what you pay for". Implying that we would take the lowest bid. To say this infuriated me was an understatement because this implied we are cheap. We are not. We hire contractors based on who we think we will work together the best with and who will best meet our needs. We often hire the guys who do not give us the lowest price. I promptly turned and walked back and apprised him of this fact. Probably rather testily. Apparently he didn't expect this and a few hours later I got an email saying he was not going to bid the job. Apparently he doesn't like competition or being called out on the carpet. Who doesn't get more than 1 bid for a job?! It is standard to get three. We have just now hired a fencing contractor. Case in point, the guy we hired bid $5,000 thousand. The lowest bid we got was $4,000. All the bidders were licensed, had workers comp insurance, had excellent reviews and nice pictures of their work. We picked him because we were the most impressed with him personally. He also had the most detailed professional bid that adhered to our specifications for the job. read more
